Trevor Horn - Reflection: Wave One OST CD (Butler Records)
Original soundtrack composed by Trevor Horn. Last year, Japanese public broadcaster NHK aired the animated superhero series The Reflection. The legendary English musician/producer Trevor Horn serves as music producer for the anime. The story of The Reflection is set in a world where a mysterious atmospheric phenomenon known as The Reflection killed many people all around the world while causing the survivors to spontaneously develop superhuman abilities. Some people become heroes, others become villains... While achieving great success as a member of The Buggles, Yes, and Art of Noise, Trevor Horn also worked as producer for many popular musicians, such as Paul McCartney, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Tom Jones, Cher, Grace Jones, Seal, Tina Turner, Lisa Stansfield, Pet Shop Boys, Simple Minds, and Mike Oldfield.
Infant Island - Obsidian Wreath LP (Secret Voice)
Fury in mourning. This is the emotional world in which Infant Island's third album, Obsidian Wreath, wraps itself and its listener. It is an album about trudging through the end of the world: where climate catastrophe, the acceleration of capitalist extractive exploitation, the apathy towards social health which has emerged from the pandemic, and an endless stream of ongoing crises too numerable to be named, constantly haunt the edges of our vision, like a rot that sets in on the borders of being. Obsidian Wreath continues and advances the band's masterful weaving of heavy genres, combining screamo and black metal with a deft movement between the sweeping emotionality of shoegazing post-metal, the hard-hitting grooviness of new-school grindcore, and the searing feedback of noise rock. Each composition flows seamlessly into the next, making this fluidity of sound feel not like an oscillation between styles, but instead like the tracing of the contours of a scene, as though Infant Island are tracing their own artistic singularity through the historicity and creative multiplicity of American extreme metal.

Joe Bataan - Gypsy Woman LP (Craft Recordings)
Joe Bataan’s 1967 debut LP for Latin music powerhouse label Fania. The title song, his breakout hit, encapsulates the unbridled excitement of his sound. Ostensibly it’s a cover of The Impressions’ exquisitely genteel Curtis Mayfield-penned ballad of the same name. In Bataan and company’s hands, however, the original is merely a fleeting reference point for their brilliant rhythmic and melodic reinvention – a storming boogaloo punctuated by double-time handclaps, the Swingers’ roaring dual-trombone front line, and staccato shouts of “Hot, hot – she smokes!” Bataan’s phrasing – no-nonsense smooth with a touch of vibrato holding the end of each line – exudes a new school cool straight outta El Barrio. In name and form, this was indeed Latin Soul. Also includes “Ordinary Guy”, the tune most associated with Bataan. [Limited edition canary yellow vinyl.]

Her soulful and resonant vocals, paired with a mix of folk, funk, and R&B, provided the perfect backdrop for her thought-provoking lyrics. 'Seize the Time' not only stands as a testament to the struggle for racial equality but also showcases the enduring power of music to inspire and unite. With it's gripping narrative, powerful vocal performances, and a sound that seamlessly blended genres, the album continues to be a beacon of hope and a call to action, reminding us that the fight for justice is far from over. The Deviants - Proof! LP (Good Time)
Lauded by many as the first true British punk album and standing as one of the best period pieces from London's psychedelic era, The Deviants debut album is a sheer monolith of psychedelic punk. With garage riffs accented with the trademark anti-social sneer and song titles such as 'Garbage' and 'Nothing Man' - The Deviants spawned a reality that paved the way for the oncoming wave of British psychedelic punks that would include Hawkwind, The Pink Fairies and many, many more.
