We hope you’ll make plans to be at the record shop on Saturday, January 25th at noon when we’ll celebrate the release of Bloom with Larkin Poe! They’ll perform a short set of songs from their new album and then sign copies of the vinyl and CD for event attendees*. Larkin Poe, the dynamic sister duo known for their electrifying blend of Southern rock, blues, and Americana, emerges once again onto the musical landscape with their eagerly anticipated album,‘ Bloom. Following their Grammy-winning success with Blood Harmony, the duo has ventured deeper into their musical journey, crafting a collection of songs that resonate with introspection, authenticity, and a profound connection to their roots in American music.

The album Bloom marks a significant evolution in Larkin Poe's creative journey. All the songs were born from collaborations between Megan, Rebecca, and co-producer Tyler Bryant, reflecting a synergy that extends beyond mere musical partnership. As Rebecca observes, Bloom is about finding oneself amidst the noise of the world, about wholeheartedlyembracing the flaws and idiosyncrasies that make us real." This theme of self-acceptance is central to the album's narrative: celebrating individuality against a backdrop of contemporary blues and rock influences.

We’re pumped to host the Lovell sisters and all of you as we welcome Bloom into the world! It’s gonna be a fun time and we hope to see you here, Music City!

Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears Instore Performance

We hope you’ll join us on Friday, February 7th at 5:00 PM when we host “guitarist extraordinaire” (Nashville Scene) Sean Thompson to celebrate the release of his new album, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears’ Head in the Sand. The album is due out that day via Ears Over America/Missing Piece Records and we’re thrilled to welcome Thompson back to Grimey’s to launch his new creation into the world. We last hosted Thompson in the shop in 2023 when he joined current students from his alma mater, Nashville School for the Arts, for a Past, Present and Future of NSA performance, and over the years, we’ve seen Sean share our stage with many of our favorite Nashville musicians including Erin Rae and Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection. All who preorder his new album from Grimey’s (in the shop or online) will score a wristband for Thompson’s post-performance signing. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+ and guarantee entrance to our event.

Thompson has been stretching the boundaries of Nashville music for over the past decade. His nimble and lyrical guitar playing has anchored the live bands of many including Erin Rae, Teddy and the Roughriders, Emily Nenni, and Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection. But it’s his songwriting project, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears, that’s positioned the 33-year-old as one of the most psychedelic and adventurous artists working today. Head In the Sand is not only a leap for its expansive and immersive arrangements but for how Thompson translated one of the most difficult periods of his life into his most personal and cathartic record yet.

Over 10 rollicking and undeniable tracks, the LP is a potent wake-up call to let go when things get tough. It’s about being present and embracing life’s towering highs and brutal lows head-on. When Thompson made his debut Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears in 2020 he had nothing but time to write, reflect, and tweak. With Head In the Sand, Thompson’s process couldn’t have been more different. “My mom died from cancer, my dog passed, and I had a life-altering breakup,” he says. “While that was happening I probably played 200 shows that year. I was just living on the road. This record was made while life was happening. I didn’t have the luxury to sit and think about what to do.” The strikingly autobiographical songs on the record reflect this turbulent period in Thompson’s life. Take lead single “Roll On Buddy,” which Thompson wrote immediately after his dog’s death at the beginning of a six-week tour. Over warm and ambling keyboards, Thompson sings, “You’re still with me every walk that I take / You pull me to every bush you peed on / When I scatter your ashes at the park / I know you’re going home once more.”

This album was a direct reaction to everything going on in Thompson’s life. Though he’d never approached lyrics this way before, he decided to just create freely and unselfconsciously. “It was actually natural to write about those emotionally intense things because it was so cathartic creatively and emotionally,” says Thompson. Grappling with his grief and how unmoored he felt allowed him to see the unhealthy habits he’d developed in his life. “You can go your entire life having an idea about who you're supposed to be,” he says. “You can become blinded by your ego, and live life with total blinders on and miss what’s happening around you.” The phrase ‘Head In the Sand’ became a sort of North Star for Thompson, a reminder to stop living life with the idea of yourself instead of being in the moment.

Thompson created Head In the Sand with a cast of longtime Nashville collaborators. Recorded and produced by Jake Davis, Thompson enlists bassists Alec O’Connell and Ryan Jennings, Jo Schornikow (Phosphorescent) on keys, drummer Ben Parks, Erin Rae, Michael Ruth (Rich Ruth) on synths, guitarist Jack Quiggins and steel player Spencer Cullum. Here, he substitutes the carefree twang of his debut for something more cosmic, timeless, and exploratory. “I thought, ‘Okay, man, I did a country rock record: I’m good on that for a while,” he says. “This record is way more of a portrait of who I am.” Inspired by Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and the Grateful Dead, Thompson eschewed the standard singer-songwriter palette for something more cerebral. The ebullient and soaring single “Riding In The Van” captures this perfectly. Over wailing lead guitars he introspectively sings, “Through the window, the world pass by / Mountain trees so high / Winding road make you wanna cry.” When Thompson wrote that song, he thought, “This is finally the kind of music I want to be making.”

For Thompson, the 10 tracks on this LP were opportunities to let go of grief, exhaustion, and chaos to be radically present. Through his lush and cerebral explorations of disparate sounds, he found the magic of making music with his closest companions and welcomed imperfection.

Join us for what will surely be a magical afternoon of music in the shop! We hope you’ll help us celebrate the release of Head in the Sand with Thompson and our wonderful musical community. You can preorder your copy now in the record shop or out site here.

Suki Waterhouse Memoir of a Sparklemuffin Album Signing

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

12/18/24 Update: The Memoir of a Sparklemuffin + wristband preorder for our upcoming signing event with Suki Waterhouse on 12/19 is now SOLD OUT (online and in-store). Thanks to all who preordered!

We hope you’ll be able to join us in the record store on Thursday, December 19th, at noon, for a special album signing with Suki Waterhouse! She’s in town to perform at The Ryman Auditorium that night with one of our faves, Bully, but she’s making time in her busy day to stop by the record shop to hang with us us for a special Memoir of a Sparklemuffin album signing! You can order your copy of her latest album now at Grimey’s or on our site here and score a wristband for Suki’s record singing. Wristbands are limited and non-transferable. They are required to participate in our signing for all 13+. (Kids 12 & under do not require wristbands.)

Suki Waterhouse’s music sounds like a collage of her inspirations, experiences, and emotions stitched together by honeyed vocal delivery, bright-eyed melodies, and evocative storytelling. It doubles as a mirror image of her life as a consummate creative, artist, actress, model, and mother, yet it also breaks the glass to unveil raw truth. She leans on an ever-evolving sonic palette to convey what she’s feeling—whether it be folky Americana, nineties alternative, turn-of-the-century indie, or handcrafted otherworldly pop. You’ll hear Suki’s longing in a swooning chorus, fearlessness in a crunchy chord, elation in a danceable waltz, and wonder in a soft coo befitting of a lullaby. Now, the platinum-certified songstress asserts herself as a versatile, vibrant, and vital presence on her 2024 double-LP, Memoir of a Sparklemuffin [Sub Pop].

She faithfully followed a lifelong passion for music to her 2022 full-length debut, I Can’t Let Go. Adorned by “Moves” and “Melrose Meltdown,” it incited widespread critical applause from Variety, Nylon, NME, The Line of Best Fit, and more. Between headlining shows and touring with Father John Misty, “Good Looking” surged online, generating nearly a billion streams, going RIAA platinum, and paving the way for the Milk Teeth EP and her sold-out, headlining Coolest Place in the World Tour. Simultaneously, Suki’s life moved at lightspeed. She absorbed inspiration from a season of change earmarked by unforgettable moments a la gracing the stage of Lollapalooza 2023, performing on multiple continents, becoming a mom, and closing out the Gobi Tent at Coachella in 2024.

Along the way, she carefully assembled Memoir of a Sparklemuffin. Beyond listening to everyone from Camera Obscura to The Raveonettes, Bloc Party, and The Teenagers, she took advantage of her proximity to various collaborators.

“I finished the record in the last few months of my pregnancy and turned my living room into a home studio,” she recalls. “I stopped going to big studios and enclosed myself at home for the last two months of being pregnant, and the best thing about LA is you can call up the most incredible musicians in the world and have them in your front room in 15 minutes!”

She brought this body of work to life with Executive Producer Eli Hirsch (courtship.) as well as Jonathan Rado (Weyes Blood, Father John Misty, Beyonce), Brad Cook (Bon Iver, War on Drugs, Snail Mail), Greg Gonzalez (Cigarettes After Sex), Rick Nowels (James Blake, Lana del Rey), and Natalie Findlay and Jules Apollinaire of the band Ttrruuces (with whom she co-wrote “Good Looking” and “OMG”).

She loosely tethered these 18 tracks to a transformative central concept represented by the Sparklemuffin spider….

“I always put the past into what I make because I feel like you need to keep exposing darkness to sunlight. When it’s exposed, it heals. I wanted a totem of metamorphosis, but I didn’t feel like a butterfly. I felt more like a scrappy spider,” she laughs. “I came across the Sparklemuffin—which is wildly colored, does this razzle-dazzle dance, and its mate will cannibalize it if she doesn’t approve of the dance. It’s a metaphor for the dance of life we’re all in. The title felt hilarious, ridiculous, and wonderful to me.”

We are so excited to celebrate the wonderfulness that is Memoir of a Sparklemuffin with Suki and all of you at our album signing! Place your event order in the shop or on our site here now for a signing wristband we’ll see you on Thursday, December 19th at noon!

12/10 Update - We’ve removed preorder bundles from our website in advance of our event today. We now have wristbands available with purchase in the record store.

We hope you’ll join us in the record store for a special event with Wyatt Flores and his pal Josh Crutchmer! On Tuesday, December 10th at noon, we’re hosting Flores for an intimate performance to be followed by a dialogue between him and Crutchmer touching on the music of and inspired by Oklahoma’s Red Dirt scene. Their conversation will be informed by questions submitted by event attendees, so please contribute to their discussion by emailing your questions to us here. They’ll also be signing copies of their latest works for folks who preorder the Welcome to the Plains album + Red Dirt Unplugged book bundles. Signing wristbands are free with purchase of vinyl + book bundles and CD + book bundles. These bundles are available for preorder on our site here and in the record shop.

Wyatt Flores, the Oklahoma bred musician and songwriter, has had a busy year, releasing both an EP in the spring and his first full length album, Welcome to the Plains, this fall via Island Records. Next week he’s taking on Nashville as he performs at The Opry on Monday, December 9th and then headlines two nights at The Ryman on Friday, December 13th and Saturday, December 14th. We’re very excited he’s making a stop at ‘the other church’ before he heads to The Mother Church!

Like Flores, Josh Crutchmer hails from Oklahoma. He is a renowned music journalist and editor, whose bylines include The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine amongst many other national and regional publications. He has authored three books, including two on the Red Dirt music scene. Crutchmer has been closely involved with this scene since 2000 and has cultivated relationships with the modern standard-bearers of the scene, as well as its forefathers. His intimate knowledge of Red Dirt extends not just to the artists but to the crew members, sound engineers, bar owners and tour managers behind the scenes whose efforts define what it means to live and work with a love of music.

We can’t wait to watch Wyatt perform in the shop and hear his discussion with Josh! We hope you’ll join us for this very special event. You can preorder Wyatt’s album and Josh’s book as a bundle for a signing wristband in the record store and on our site here now, which also guarantees entrance to our event. Space is limited and wristbands are only available while supplies last.

East Nashville Small Business Saturday Holiday Crawl + Blood Assurance Drive

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This Saturday we’re joining some of our fellow East Nashville local businesses in participating in East Nash Small Business Saturday Holiday Crawl! The crawl consists of 50 small businesses, curated holiday shopping and parties galore! All you have to do is shop small that day & fill up your punch card with stamps from shops in a couple of East Nashville neighborhoods and you’ll be entered to win a $50 gift card. Make a $10 purchase at Grimey’s to receive a mark on your bingo card to qualify for the giveaway. See specific stores for details on their participation. Check out all of the fab businesses involved on the official East Nash Crawl instagram page here. So, load your besties in the car and come bop around the East Side for this phenomenal shopping event!

It is the giving season and in that spirit, we encourage you to give blood when you stop by the shop on Saturday. It’s a vital resource that’s always in demand. We’re pleased to partner with the Blood Assurance to help save lives in our local community by encouraging blood donations to their blood mobile, which will be parked at Grimey’s from 11am-4pm on Saturday, November 30th. ALL blood collected by the Blood Assurance stays in the local community. They are the exclusive blood supplier for all area HCA/Tri-Star Hospitals, Williamson Medical Center, Maury Regional Medical Center, and the Vanderbilt Hospital system - live local, give local!

The FDA has, at long last, revised their policy regarding gay and bisexual men. The new policy eliminates the time-based restriction of three months and instead screens all potential donors equally, using a series of questions that will assess their individual risk of HIV, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Other things that will not defer you: tattoos, diabetes, cannabis use, alcohol use, and most other reasons you may be thinking. The minimum age for donating in TN is 16 with a parent’s or guardian’s permission. 17 and up can donate of their own free will. There is no upper age limit. The average age of a donor currently is 45. We need younger donors! Only 3% of age eligible people donate blood yearly. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood - that means up to 100 people had to donate in order to have that blood available. One donation can save up to 3 lives! Be a hero!

Once again, EVERYTHING Blood Assurance collects stays in the community in which it was donated. YOU can help save the lives of your friends and neighbors. Please join us on Saturday, November 30th, and donate. Go to bloodassurance.org/grimeys to register in advance, or just show up ready to help on Saturday!

Black Friday 2024!!!!

The Blackest of Fridays is upon us! Join us on Friday, November 29th for Black Friday in the record store! We’ll be opening one hour early, at 10:00 AM, and will be selling RSD Black Friday Exclusive Releases, records that you’ll only find at indie record shops! Check out the full list of albums being released for RSD Black Friday on the Record Store Day website here.

As usual, we'll be selling the RSD exclusives out of our back door, menu style. We'll have menus listing all of the titles in stock. You'll go through the menu, selecting the titles you'd like. Then helpful Grimey's staffers will pick your order and bring you your records! It's helpful if you've looked through the list online and have your choices prepared, but we'll help you any way we can while you're here. Please note all RSD Black Friday exclusive titles are limited to one per title, per person and all sales are limited to in person, in-store purchase only.

If you get here early, before we arrive, please line up in the lawn in front of our neighbors Living Waters. We'll have a handy sign there for you saying "Line Forms Here." Once we're ready to start selling, we'll move the line over to our back door. Please do not line up right at the door. Wait until we're ready to bring you over from the lawn next door.

Once the line has died down, we'll move the RSD records upstairs to the stage for in-store browsing. And we'll have a sweet selection of preloved records we've saved for this weekend ready for browsing too! We hope to see you this Friday at 10AM.

We’ll also be kicking off our annual Toy Drive for the holiday season starting on Friday, 11/29/2024, so please think of those in our community who need a little help wrangling that holiday magic for their families and bring a new, unopened toy or gift for Nashville kids, ages 0-16. (Please avoid realistic looking toy weapons and gifts that include food as these cannot be distributed.)

Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner John Osborne (of Brothers Osborne) fame, the single features Bowers alongside her band, The Hodge Podge, and is “an infectious, joyous party and a worthy introduction to Bowers" (Forbes). Known for her electric live performances, Bowers toured throughout the summer including her Grand Ole Opry debut on her 18th birthday (!!), as well as several major festival performances and shows with Brothers Osborne, Elle King and Chris Shiflett. Originally from the Bay Area and now based in Nashville, Bowers began garnering attention after sharing videos of herself playing guitar on social media during the pandemic. In the years since, she’s been featured on “CBS Mornings" and performed alongside artists such as Dolly Parton, Tyler Childers, Lainey Wilson, Devon Allman, Susan Tedeschi, Gaslight Anthem and more.

We’re so pumped to get to host Grace at Grimey’s and hope you can ome out to celebrate this happy occasion with her and all of us! Woodland was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee at Welch and Rawlings' newly rebuilt Woodland Sound Studio and cements the duo's iconoclastic position at the forefront of acoustic music. The vinyl edition of Woodland was mastered by Rawlings himself, directly from the original analog master tapes to his custom Neumann VMS-80 lathe. The album was also produce by Rawlings.

Journalist Jenn Pelly wrote about Welch and Rawling’s new album for NPR and explains “Woodland is named for the storied East Nashville studio they have owned for 23 years and where, early in March 2020, a tornado of Biblical proportions tore off the roof and threatened to capsize the whole of their life’s work. The storm left the pair knee-deep in water and pitch-black darkness as they risked their earthly existences to save the materials constituting their musical ones. Amid the guitars and gear were the collected master tapes of their poised, literary songs dating back to the mid-1990s, when Welch and Rawlings began distilling 1930s country and sharp-angled brother-team bluegrass and rural folk into their own austere sonic grammar — alchemizing pain into transcendence, dissolving conventional time, putting Elvis and the Titanic into the same America as a five-band punk bill and blending harmonies so chilling they are said to have made Townes Van Zandt howl like a wolf.”

We’re so glad that Welch and Rawlings have given us new music this year and are over-the-moon to be able to host them in the record shop and celebrate Woodland with all of you! Preorder your copy at Grimey’s or on our site now and join us on Friday, November 15th for this very special occasion. This is a Woodland album signing only, where wristbands are required to participate and each participant can have up to two (2) copies of the album (vinyl and/or CD) signed. For parking info please check out our Parking FAQs. Kim Deal Listening Party

Join us on Thursday, November 14th at 4:00 PM for a special early listening party for Kim Deal’s much anticipated album, Nobody Loves You More. The record is coming out on November 22nd via 4AD Records and so far just a few singles have dropped, so this is your first shot to hear her album in full, plus we’ll have a party favors and will be giving away a signed Kim Deal print to one lucky attendee. (There is no cost to participate in our giveaway; you must be present to win.) This is a free and all ages affair, so come one, come all.

Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal’s proper debut album (she self-released a 5-part, 10-song 7” vinyl series in 2013), however she earned her stripes as early as the late 80s with The Pixies and The Breeders. The long-awaited record’s creation began with its oldest songs, “Are You Mine?” and “Wish I Was,” which were written and originally recorded in 2011 and included in said vinyl series, shortly after Deal concluded Pixies’ ‘Lost Cities Tour’ and relocated to L.A.

In the years since, the record took shape in pieces, coming to light with a variety of collaborators, including Breeders past and present (Mando Lopez, Kelley Deal, Jim Macpherson, and Britt Walford), as well as new friends like Jack Lawrence (The Greenhorns) and Savages’ Fay Milton and Ayse Hassan. Tracked over the last several years, the record’s last recording was helmed by iconic engineer and Deal’s close friend Steve Albini, tracking “A Good Time Pushed” with Jim and Kelley in November 2022.

Sonically versatile and propulsively infectious, the resulting record is a celebration of Deal’s unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape, but also to her immovable cultural weight.

We’re pumped to hear the album and will see you in the shop on November 14th!

Wilderado Instore Performance, Album Signing & Talker Record Release Celebration

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music (map)

Make plans to join us on Thursday, November 7th at 4:00 PM when we host Wilderado for an instore performance and album signing in celebration of the release of Talker, their brand new album on Bright Antenna Records! The album is due out on Friday, November 1st and is available to order on our site here now or in the record shop on limited edition marigold colored vinyl. All who order the album for event pickup will receive a wristband with purchase for the band’s post-performance signing. Wristbands are limited and guarantee entrance. For the signing, wristbands are required for all 13+. This is a free all ages affair, so come one, come all and check out Wilderado!

Formed in the California mountains, but originally hailing from Tulsa, OK, Wilderado have been steadily building a passionate fan base and defining who they are since 2015. When they first came together, Max Rainer (lead vocals, guitar), Tyler Wimpee (guitar, vocals), Colton Dearing (bass, vocals) and Justin Kila (drums) spent a summer in Latigo Canyon, a secluded part of Malibu, with longtime Sufjan Stevens collaborator James McAlister, immersing themselves in writing and recording. Those songs went on to form early EP releases with tastemaker indie labels IAMSOUND and National Anthem, which garnered 35 million streams, but more crucially provided the backbone to years of touring.

Following initial recording sessions at their one-time home and creative space named “The Misty Shrub” (the title of the first EP) in Latigo Canyon (the title of the second EP), the band returned Tulsa to base themselves from their hometown. Since then, they’ve crisscrossed the USA a half dozen times playing with artists as diverse as Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Mt. Joy, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise, and have performed on the main stage at such festivals as Bottlerock and Austin City Limits.

Like all of Wilderado’s music, their new album Talker blurs the boundaries between genres, creating a multi-sided sound soft-hued and subdued one moment; anthemic and buoyant the next — that defies categorization. “We've always had an eclectic catalog and an ‘anything goes’ mentality, where the only thing that matters is the song itself,” Rainer says. Appropriately, the songs are the real stars of Talker. “A lot of our first LP was about being on the road, and I didn’t want to regurgitate that same idea on our new album. Instead, I decided to get confessional and vulnerable.”

In addition to writing songs with his two bandmates Rainer branched out on Talker, writing with the British band Flyte on a few album tracks including “Longstanding Misunderstanding.” When asked about this Rainer shared, “A big part of my growing process with this album was learning to ask for help, which isn't easy for me to do,” he admits. “But it turned out so beautiful, every time I did.” On Talker Wilderado is chasing after honesty and they’ve hit a new stride, fueling themselves up on sharp songwriting and adventurous arrangements before setting off toward some new horizon. This is Wilderado at their best: inspired, invigorated, and answering to nobody but themselves.

Don’t miss your chance to see a free show by Wilderado in the record store on November 7th and get your copy of the new record signed by the band. We’ll have copies of Talker on hand for purchase at our event but you can go ahead and lock your copy in now on our site here or the next time you’re in the store. Wristbands for our signing are free with purchase of Talker and will be required for the signing portion of our event.

SCARS 10th Anniversary Reading & Signing with Nadia Bruce-Rawlings & Dan Denton and Music by The Prickly Pair

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We hope you can join us on Saturday, October 26th at 5:00 PM to help us celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Nadia Bruce-Rawlings highly acclaimed collection of short stories and poetry, SCARS. Originally published by Punk Hostage Press in 2014, SCARS tell Nadia’s story of addiction, abuse, and recovery through intimate vingettes. In addition to readings by Nadia and fellow author Dan Denton, our event will also feature live music by Nashville based duo, The Prickly Pair. The group, comprised of Mason Summit & Irene Greene, specialize in angsty Americana originals and classic country covers. Their latest single, “It Takes Two to Cry,” was released in August.

Nadia uses grains of her once gritty life to infuse her stories with cathartic realism. She grew up traveling the world and living in various countries before settling in Los Angeles, where she began a long career in the film industry. In recovery since 1998 from drugs, alcohol, and an abusive upbringing, Nadia and her husband have settled into the Nashville area, where she writes by the lake when she can escape their six kids and dog. Her stories “Fire” and “Scars” were both finalists in Glimmer Train’s writing contests. Her anthology SCARS was published ten years ago by Punk Hostage Press, followed in 2020 with her anthology DRIVING IN THE RAIN. Her story, “Peace Accord,” was featured in the Spring 2018 edition of Bluestem Magazine.

Denton, a former union autoworker and UAW chief steward, is a lifetime blue collar worker, writer, and poet. His work has been published in magazines, newspapers, union journals, anthologies, and often in Toledo Streets Newspaper. He has authored three books, including, $100-A-WEEK MOTEL (Punk Hostage Press, 2021) and THE DEAD AND DESPERATE (Roadside Press, 2023), and a poetry/novella hybrid, as well as dozens of chapbooks of poetry. He has toured as a spoken word artist for over a decade. Last year he was voted the best writer and author in Toledo, and after accepting an early retirement buy out offer from Toledo Jeep, he now lives full-time in a small travel trailer out in rural parts of the Midwest, chasing his biggest writer daydreams.

"Everybody should abandon their lives and read SCARS" says Jerry Stahl, author of Permanent Midnight, The Heroin Chronicles, and Bad Sex On Speed. We don’t think you should abandon your lives but we do suggest you head to the record store to celebrate or learn more about SCARS and authors Nadia Bruce-Rawlings & Dan Denton. In addition to featuring the authors and performers, we’ll also be partaking in our weekly BEER:30 hang where we share cold TN Brew Works with our of-age customers (21+ with valid ID only.) This is a free & all ages affair, so come one, come all!

Crosby Still Nash and Young Live at the Fillmore East, 1969 Listening Party

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music (map)

We hope you can join us on Friday, October 25th for a special mid-day listening party in the record shop! At 12:00 PM that day we’ll be hanging out and listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s Live at Fillmore East, 1969. After famously playing their second show at Woodstock in August 1969, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young spent the rest of the year touring and writing songs for what would become CSNY's 1970 debut, Déjà Vu. Live at Fillmore East, 1969 is a newly discovered multi-track recording of the band's September 20, 1969, concert at the historic Fillmore East in New York City captures an early moment from that first tour. Including both acoustic and electric sets, as well as hit tracks such as "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", "Our House", "I've Loved Her So Long", etc. Stephen Stills and Neil Young compiled and mixed the original eight-track concert recordings at Sunset Studios to keep the production entirely analog. Young recently said: "[We] have the tapes, and they sound so real. We mixed at Sunset Sound - the analog echo chamber, no digital echo. We're staying all analog throughout the production... Pure. Analog. No digital."

Join us in the record shop as we spin Live at Fillmore East, 1969 on release day and share door prizes with attendees! The album will be available that day for purchase on vinyl and CD. We’ll also be handing out raffle tickets for a special giveaway that will take place at the end of the album. There is no cost to participate, but you must be present to win. This is a free & all ages affair, so come one, come all!

Can’t Steal My Fire Listening Party

Join us on Saturday, October 19th, at 4:30 for a special edition of our weekly BEER:30 event. In addition to sipping on free cold ones, courtesy of Tennessee Brew Works, we'll be spinning the brand new tribute album to Nashville songwriting great Dave Olney. It's called Can't Steal My Fire: The Songs of Dave Olney and was lovingly produced by our longtime friend and associate Gwil Owen, a fine songwriter in his own right. The record is out on Friday, October 18th, on New West Records and features new versions of David Olney songs recorded by Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Willis Alan Ramsey, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Mary Gauthier, Jim Lauderdale, and Buddy Miller among others. The tracklist is also highlighted by a never-before released live recording by Townes Van Zandt!

“Anytime anyone asks me who my favorite music writers are, I say Mozart, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bob Dylan and Dave Olney. Dave Olney is one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard.” – Townes Van Zandt

Originally from Rhode Island, Olney moved to Nashville in the early ‘70s and fell in with a group of songwriters including Townes Van Zandt, John Hiatt, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Rodney Crowell. With his rock band David Olney and the X-Rays he toured tirelessly. He went on to release a string of brilliant albums and his songs were recorded by Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Del McCoury, Linda Ronstadt, and many others. But the bright lights of stardom never shone on David, and he died the way he lived: onstage in a club, far from home, singing a song.

This event is free to attend and we'll have some cool stuff for you if you do, plus free beer for those 21+! You can preorder a copy of Can't Steal My Fire now in the record shop and in the Grimey's webstore.

Since her breakthrough in 2020, Oladokun has been hailed by Rolling Stone as "Nashville’s most low-key musical revolutionary" and celebrated for her uniquely vulnerable voice. Oladokun has released two highly acclaimed albums—2021’s in defense of my own happiness and 2023’s Proof of Life—both appearing on numerous best-of-the-year lists. Oladokun's new album, Observations From a Crowded Room, marks a significant evolution in her career. The 15-track collection—comprised of 12 songs and 3 interludes—reflects her growth as an artist and producer, blending her pop-folk roots with electronic and psychedelic elements. Solely written and produced by Oladokun, the album represents a personal and artistic turning point, crafted during a period of introspection and questioning. In addition to releasing new music, Oladokun is embarking on an extensive tour that includes dates with Hozier and Tyler Childers, along with select headline shows. A proud queer Black woman and daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Oladokun has graced prestigious stages like the White House for the Respect for Marriage Act signing ceremony, as well as national TV appearances. She has also performed on “CBS Saturday Morning,” “TODAY,” PBS’ “Austin City Limits,” and NPR Music’s “Tiny Desk (Home) Concert.” Her song "i see america" was a finalist for the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Award for Best Song for Social Change. Widely respected by her peers, Oladokun has collaborated with amazing artists such as Chris Stapleton, Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Jason Isbell and Noah Kahan. And she’ll be hitting the road again in 2025 for her Blackbird Tour and will be playing at our beloved Mother Church here in Nashville, The Ryman Auditorium, on Thursday, March 27th. Tickets go on sale on October 4th.

Our celebration with Joy on October 18th is going to be a fun time, don’t sleep on this one, Nashville! We’re thrilled to announce we’ve been able to reschedule our event with Steve Cropper after having to postpone it from its originally scheduled date. Mr. Steve Cropper will now be joining us on
Thursday, October 10th at 4:00 PM for his Q&A and album signing.

Make plans to join us on Thursday, October 10th to celebrate the release of Steve Cropper & The Midnight Hour’s Friendlytown on Provogue Records! The legend himself, Mr. Steve Cropper, will be in the shop answering questions for our Q&A and chatting about his new album with local philanthropist and Americana Music Triangle founder Aubrey Preston. After their conversation Cropper will then sign records for attendees. In addition to signing copies of Friendlytown, Cropper will also sign copies of his other works for those participating in our signing. (Select catalog titles will be available for purchase at Grimey’s plus you can bring your beloved albums from home with you.) Preorder your copy of Friendlytown in the record shop or on our site now to secure your wristband for Cropper’s signing event. Wristbands are required* to participate in the signing and guarantee entrance to our event. (*Kids 12 & under do not need a wristband if attending with a wristband-wearing adult.) All who preorder in advance of this event will be given the opportunity to submit questions for the Q&A via email.

Cropper has won two GRAMMY Awards from his seven nominations. He’s been ranked the number two greatest guitarist of all-time—behind Jimi Hendrix—by England’s Mojo Magazine, and number 36 in Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.” While in high school, Cropper’s band, The Mar-Keys, hit number #3 with “Last Night.” That smoldering Southern soul collective morphed into Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Booker T. & the M.G.’s. In addition, Cropper collaborations have gifted us with “Dock of The Bay,” “In the Midnight Hour,” and countless other classics.

For years Cropper’s name has been synonymous with the world-famous soul label Stax Records, and he is featured in HBO’s new documentary, Stax: Soulsville U.S.A. While at Stax, Cropper co-wrote numerous hits plus he played guitar behind and produced legends including Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Wilson Pickett, Bill Withers, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, and Johnnie Taylor. After his time at Stax, Cropper produced and/or played on sessions for everyone from John Prine, Jeff Beck, Jose Feliciano, Tower Of Power, John Cougar Mellencamp, Paul Simon, Ringo Starr, Buddy Guy, Johnny Lang, Elton John, and Steppenwolf, among, many, many others.

Reflecting back on his journey, the iconic musician says: “When I think about my legacy, I want it to be said that I was a nice guy.” This is the perfect sentiment from the man bringing us Friendlytown.

We cannot wait to host this ‘nice guy’ in the record store and hear stories about his many experiences working as a musician and with musicians, including his time in Nashville at RCA Studio C. Help us celebrate Steve Cropper’s new record, Friendlytown, and his storied career as an artist and producer with this very special event in the record store.

Make plans to join us in the record shop on Wednesday, October 9th at 4:00 PM for an intimate in-store performance and album signing by Jett Holden! We’ll be celebrating the release of his album The Phoenix, due out October 4th via Black Opry Records. You can preorder the album in the record shop on our site now and score a signing wristband for our event. Wristbands are required to participate in the signing for all 13+ and also guarantee entrance to our event. We will also have copies of The Phoenix available for puchase in the shop on the day of our event. This is a free and all ages shindig, so come one, come all!

Singer-songwriter Jett Holden grew up in a musical family and has been creating music for years, but it’s only been in the last few years that he’s found a welcoming and receptive space in the country music scene. As Holden says “I’m a gay, Black man in country music, and I’m beginning to make strides. The reason for that is that I and the BIPOC and LGBTQ artists I’ve met over the last year are standing beside each other. Black Opry and Country Queer are two organizations I’m working with that I would recommend reaching out to. You’re not alone. And there’s room for more than one of us. “ Now partnering with Black Opry Records, Holden unleashes The Phoenix. According to Holdenthe title ‘The Phoenix’ represents the resurrection of my career.” He adds, “when Holly found me, when the Black Opry found me, I had quit music. I was done. This whole process pulled me back into music. Everything feels possible now.” You can read more about his new album and preorder your copy on our site here.

We’re very happy to be able to celebrate the release of The Phoenix with Holden, The Black Opry and Black Opry Records, Thirty Tigers, and all of you! See you soon, Nashville!

Instruments For Education + Piece By Piece

On Saturday, October 5th we’re partnering with Instruments For Education and Focus Features to help collect instruments for local students! Instruments for Education is a Nashville-based 501-C3 non-profit organization whose mission it is to collect and distribute musical instruments to area school classrooms and students that may not otherwise have the means to purchase instruments. The organization offers teachers and students a hands-on way to explore and learn about musical instrument(s). We love what Instruments For Education are doing in our community and are happy to support them in their efforts. Please bring any gently used or preloved instruments with you to the shop on 10/5 and leave your contribution with one of the IFE volunteers. When you’re here you can also find out more about Instruments For Education and how you can support their good work.

As a show of thanks for your donation, Foucs Features is supplying us with passes for an early screening of the upcoming feature film Piece By Piece. Opening Friday, October 11th and staring musician and cultural icon Pharrell Williams, the film is a unique cinematic experience that invites audiences on a vibrant journey through the life Williams as told through the lens of LEGO® animation. The movie turns up the volume on your imagination and witnesses the evolution of one of music's most innovative minds. Musicians Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg round out the cast. The screening passes available with donation are for a showing of the film on Wednesday, October 9th, 7pm at the Regal Opry Mills.

Drug Church Instore Performance, Album Signing & Record Release Celebration

We hope you can join us on Friday, October 4th at 5:00 PM when we host Drug Church in the record store for an intimate performance and album signing to celebrate the release of their new album Prude. Due out that same day by Pure Noise Records, Prude is the band’s 5th studio album. All who preorder Prude on LP or CD in the record shop or in our webstore for local, instore pickup will receive a wristband for the band’s post performance signing. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+. Space is limited and wristbands guarantee entrance. In addition to clebrating with the band and label, we’ll also be hosting a Daddy's Dogs Pop-Up for the occasion, so come hungry for rock music and hot dogs!

For over a decade, Drug Church have been building a very strong case that they’re the best loud guitar band in the game; Prude is a 28-minute blast of aggression, melody, irreverence, and genuine heart–feels like the undeniable proof. The album is so downright satisfying it tricks you into thinking there’s nothing all that surprising about a difficult-to-pigeonhole punk band from Albany, NY, with a name like Drug Church somehow having a career at all, much less one that would last over 10 years and qualify them as the best band going. But before you start trying to think of who might have them beat (good luck), consider what just might be the key to Drug Church’s unexpected staying power: Don’t take it too seriously.

In true Drug Church fashion, Prude rejects oversimplification, instead demanding attention and keeping it through sheer force of will. Produced and engineered by longtime collaborator Jon Markson, the album makes it very clear that Drug Church hasn’t stopped pushing themselves and still have more than a few tricks up their collective sleeve.

Don’t miss your chance to see them play in the record store on October 4th! It’s gonna be a ton of fun—we can’t wait! You can secure your copy of the new album and score a Drug Church signing wristband with your Prude preorder now! See you soon, Music City.

Styrofoam Winos Instore Performance, Album Signing & Record Release Celebration

9/27 Update - With our instore performance & album signing with Styrofoam Winos happening this afternoon, we've removed copies of Real Time from our webstore but fear not, we'll have copies of the album avaialble in the record store this afternoon. It's gonna be a fun one, hope to see y'all here!

We hope you can join us on Friday, Sepetember 27th at 5:00 PM as we come together to celebrate the release of Styrofoam Wino’s new album, their second full length, Real Time! The band will be playing a short set in the shop and then signing albums for attendees. When they released their debut, self-titled album, the band performed alone in the record store because at the time we were not hosting in-person events. (You can watch their 2021 instore set on Sophomore Lounge’s YouTube page here. ) Now that we have the chance to have them back, we’re thrilled to be able to watch their song-craft magic unfold in the shop with all of you. You can preorder Real Time now on vinyl and CD in the shop and on our store here. All who preorder for local, instore pickup will receive a signing wristband for our event. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+ and guarantee entrance to our event. (Additional copies of the album will be available for purchase in the shop on release day for this event.)

On Real Time,, you imagine - and firmly believe - that the Styrofoam Winos’ relationship extends beyond studios and stages. You believe they not only play music together, but eat meals together, live down the street from one another, practice three days a week because it's fun, read the same books, and that they've agreed in some wordless, musical bond that this is who they are. As a listener, and inevitable fan, you wonder if they found each other by a stroke of luck or the hand of destiny. You believe that they can probably read each other's minds and that their music is as joyous to them as it is to you. After all, this is what we love about early R.E.M. records, the brainier grooves of Pavement, and the discographies of Yo La Tengo and The Breeders.

The Springwater Supper Club and Lounge in Nashville has been a dive bar since before a dive bar was a brand; a place where, in the early 2000's, everyone would wonder if David and Dave (Berman and Cloud) would be sitting at the bar and a write-up in a weekly paper could fill the room. It seemed like everyone that bought you a beer was either in Lambchop or The Cherry Blossoms. This wasn't a world that wanted to keep great music a secret. This was a world where great music was born and championed, when a community didn't have metrics or boardrooms. The members of Styrofoam Winos were in elementary school back then, but they carry on this scene's shaggy-dog torch that deserves a bigger audience.

Real Time was cut live to tape in Nashville at The Bomb Shelter studio by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, The Ettes, Margo Price) with few overdubs and over just 5 days, whenever the band had enough money to record. The members - Lou Turner, Trevor Nikrant, Joe Kenkel - all make wonderful solo albums on labels like Dear Life, Earth Libraries, and SPINSTER, as well as excellent self-releases. But unlike most bands where members compose alone before bringing a song to the table, the Winos write the music and lyrics together. Their van life, which has included tours with MJ Lenderman, has solidified this chemistry. They switch instruments in the studio, too, and allow the friend who found the seed of the song to sing the lead. Between the 3 of them (and a couple visits from pedal steel buddy, Will Elis Johnson), Styrofoam Winos trade off on guitars, drums, bass, synths, vibraphone, percussion, and all the lovely vocals, like they're on a cross-country road trip, taking turns behind the wheel, and singing along with each other because they all know the words. And Real Time is just that: a celebration of the present-tense and its ever-shifting moments of living. They're going down the road, not feeling bad, but feeling.

Join us in the record store on Friday, September 27th and soak in some of this Music City Magic! It’s gonna be a great time and you won’t want to miss out. Score your signing wristband and lock in your copy of Real Time in the shop or on our site here. See you soon, Nashville!
