On Saturday, April 12th we’ll be celebrating Record Store Day at Grimey’s! Just like previous RSD events at Grimey’s, we’ll be supported by members of our community including HeadCount, who will be working to register voters.

Record Store Day exclusive releases will be available for purchase in person starting at 10:00 AM, when the store opens that day. RSD Exclusives will be limited to one per title, per person. We are unable to hold or reserve RSD exclusive titles. No phone orders or mail orders on RSD Exclusives until after April 19th.

The Hip Replacements will join us in the afternoon on RSD to rock the shop with tunes from The Replacements' Tim LP, which is getting released in its new mix as a standalone RSD exclusive! The Hip Replacements will rock the shop at 4:30 PM during our weekly BEER:30 hang, so free live music for everyone and free beer for those 21 and over!

We’ve also secured a food vendor for. your hungry bellies. We’re pleased to welcome Daddy’s Dogs to the Record Store Day party! They’ll be on site with delicious hot dogs, including veggie options, and all the fixin’s. Join us in the record shop on Wednesday, April 9th at 4:00 PM when we’ll host music award-winning archival producer Zev Feldman in conversation with Julie Fudge, Patsy Cline’s daughter and CAO of the Patsy Cline​ Enterprises LLC. They’ll be celebrating the imminent release of Patsy Cline's Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954 - 1963), which will be released as a double vinyl set on Record Store Day, (which is Saturday, April 12th this year). Feldman and Fudge will be joined by local writer, WXNA co-founder and DJ, and country music enthusiast Randy Fox to discuss the new collection and answer audience questions. Album co-producers Dylan Utz and George Hewitt will be joining Feldman and Fudge as well. While we won’t have copies of the new LP available at our event, we will have copies for sale on Record Store Day and hope you’ll come out that Saturday to pick up one.

The legacy of legendary country vocalist Patsy Cline, whose storied recordings of the 1950s and 1960s with​ producer Owen Bradley helped establish country music’s pop-crossover Nashville Sound, receives a new​ chapter with the release of Imagine That: The Lost Recordings (1954-1963), a revelatory​ collection of previously unreleased recordings from Elemental Music/Deep Digs.​ This unprecedented, limited edition two-LP set, produced in association and with the full endorsement of the​ Patsy Cline Estate, features 48 unissued tracks, all​ faithfully transferred, mastered and released legitimately for​ the first time. They survey the full breadth of the singer’s artistry, from her first days as a professional musician​ with Bill Peer & the Melody Boys and Girls in the early ‘50s to the apex of her popularity, just weeks before​ she tragically died at the age of 30 in a plane crash on March 5, 1963.​ 

Drawn from radio broadcasts, TV shows, and demo recordings, these meticulously restored performances cast a​ fresh spotlight on Cline’s luminous, powerful vo​ice, and eschew the opulent strings and vocal choruses of​ Bradley’s productions in favor of an intimate, unadorned, earthy sound. Affecting alternate versions of Cline’s​ chart-topping crossover hits “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Crazy,” and “She’s Got You” are​ included. Cline is heard duetting with such fellow country stars as Cowboy Copas (who died in the same crash​ that took Cline’s life), Ferlin Husky, Red Foley, Bobby Lord, Ernest Tubb, and Lonzo & Oscar.

Join us in the record store on Thursday, April 3rd, at 4:00 PM for a Black Country, New Road listening party on the eve of the album’s official release! We’ll be playing the record in the store and sharing party favors with event attendees. We’ll also have copies of Forever Howlong available for early purchase on assorted formats, including a limited number of autographed copies of the indie exclusive Eco Jazz Transparent Blue vinyl variant.

Forever Howlong is Black Country, New Road’s first studio release since 2022's UK #3 album Ants From Up There, which gave the band their second Top 5 UK album in 12 months alongside their Mercury Prize shortlisted debut For the first time, and follows 2023's Live at Bush Hall, an album The Guardian claimed was a “magical resurgence” in a triumphant five-star review. Now, on studio album three, the band are once again building from the ground up in yet another miraculous musical transformation.

The long-awaited new record was produced by James Ford (Fontaines D.C., Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur) and sees Black Country, New Road settled into a new shape in which vocal duties – and most of the song writing – is split between Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery, and May Kershaw. “It created a real through line for the album, having three girls singing," says Ellery. "It's definitely very different to Ants From Up There, because of the female perspective - and the music we've made also compliments that."

Forever Howlong is an ambitious, meticulously detailed record that includes everything from folk to prog via baroque pop and touches of alt-rock – with nods to everything from Joanna Newsom to Randy Newman via Fiona Apple and Janis Ian – yet all the while retaining that unmistakably unique sound that only this combination of musicians can come up with. Although hugely varied and expansive, the album also feels deeply cohesive and focused, as it takes three distinct voices and styles and seamlessly intersperses them into a new collective sound.

Djo, the musical project of Joe Keery, returns with his third studio album, The Crux —a deeply reflective and sonically adventurous body of work. Following the massive success of his single “End of Beginning” which topped the Global Spotify chart and amassed over 1.5 billion streams worldwide, The Crux was crafted at the legendary Electric Lady Studios in New York. Drawing inspiration from the turbulence and growth of navigating one’s 20s, the album explores themes of self-discovery and connection, all wrapped in a narrative that serves as a love letter to those who matter most to Djo. Aptly titled The Crux, this album captures a moment suspended between the past and an undefined future.

Join us on Wednesday, March 26th, at 4:00 PM, for a discussion about John Cale’s Paris 1919 with author Mark Doyle, whose new book on Cale’s intriguing album is the latest entry in the 33 1/3 series from Bloomsbury Publishing. Joining Mark to lead the discussion is Theresa Kereakes, who was there at the beginning of LA’s punk scene and has worked with John Cale. There will be a book signing following the discussion. John Cale's enigmatic masterpiece, Paris 1919, appeared at a time when the artist and his world were changing forever. It was 1973, the year of the Watergate hearings and the oil crisis, and Cale was at a crossroads. The white-hot rage of his Velvet Underground days was nearly spent; now he was living in Los Angeles, working for a record company and making music when time allowed. He needed to lay to rest some ghosts, but he couldn't do that without scaring up others. Paris 1919 was the result.

In this vivid, wide-ranging book, Mark Doyle hunts down the ghosts haunting Cale's most enduring solo album. There are the ghosts of New York – of the Velvets, Nico, and Warhol – that he smuggled into Los Angeles in his luggage. There is the ghost of Dylan Thomas, a fellow Welshman who haunts not just Paris 1919 but much of Cale's life and art. There are the ghosts of history, of a failed peace and the artists who sought the truth in dreams. And there are the ghosts of Christmas, surprising visitors who bring a nostalgic warmth and a touch of wintry dread. With erudition and wit, Doyle offers new ways to listen to an old album whose mysteries will never fully be resolved.

Mark Doyle is a history professor at MTSU, where he teaches courses on British and Irish history. He is the author of several books, including The Kinks: Songs of the Semi-Detached (Reaktion 2020). His writing has appeared in a number of outlets, including the Irish Times and Nashville's newest literary journal, Swing.

Theresa Kereakes was one of the "First 100" original Los Angeles punks. She co-founded, published, and was the chief photographer for the fanzine Lobotomy and has worked in the music industry in a variety of roles. During her stint at Island Records, Theresa worked with John Cale as he toured in support of his albums Music for a New Society and Caribbean Sunset.

Radio DDR was recorded spring, 2024 by Kai Slater and Sharp Pins band mates in his house on the roof in the basement with all the doors open. We’re pumped to welcome Vundabar to Grimey’s on Tuesday, March 11th at 4:00 PM for an instore performance and album signing, just a few days after the band’s new album Surgery and Pleasure drops and right before they embark upon weeks of touring in the US and Europe. Formed by Brandon Hagen (guitar, vocals) and Drew McDonald (drums), and later joined by Zack Abramo (bass), Vundabar have always been imbued with a fiercely independent spirit, their sound forged in mythical underground Brooklyn venues such as Silent Barn and Shea Stadium. Musically, they exist almost as a fever dream of many genres, melding arty post-punk, tangled math-rock, sun-dappled surf-guitar, shimmering jangle-pop and grunge scuzz into sharp, compact songs that have netted them a wide fan base and a reputation for a killer live show.

The band’s music has always progressed alongside its members, functioning as the band’s own coming-of-age tale. While the scrappiness of Vundabar’s earliest days gave way to a different gravity on 2021’s Devil For The Fire, that was only the beginning. Off the road and away from the studio during the pandemic years, Hagen had focused on tending to his father, going through the deeply “psychedelic” experience of parenting his own parent, teaching him to read and walk again. After his father’s death in 2023, shortly after the loss of a long-term relationship, Hagen could’ve been overwhelmed by all the loss. But instead, he found himself faced with the all-encompassing intensity of it all and chose surrender. This led him to new material that was an evolution by way of going home.

“Surgery And Pleasure is a more mature synthesis of all the stuff we’ve explored before,” he says of the album’s fusion of old-school Vundabar energy with a newfound muscularity and slickness. “In a way it feels like a return. It’s grownup Vundabar.”

Hagen’s answer for Vundabar’s new era ar rived through deconstruction. After breaking his arm on tour in France, Hagen found himself physically unable to play with the band or to strum a guitar. He wrote this new Vundabar material completely differently, holed up alone and building layered guitar parts by recording individual pieces until they formed a whole. He’d been broken himself, and in turn broke down what the band was, gaining a better understanding along the way.

We’re thrilled that even though Nashville isn’t an official stop on Vundabar’s upcoming tour that we have the pleasure of seeing them up-close-and-personal in the record shop and celebrating the release of Surgery and Pleasure with them. Last fall Jason Isbell momentarily stepped away from his longtime bandmates The 400 Unit to write and record a stripped down acoustic record on his own. Foxes in the Snow came to life in a short five-day recording session at Electric Ladyland Studios in New York. Written and performed on his 1940 acoustic Martin 0-17, the album is an intimate affair. Jason is out on the road right now performing several weeks worth of solo gigs in support of the album. His tour will bring him to Nashville’s newest venue, The Pinnacle, for a string of shows March 20th, 21st, 22nd and 28th. After his solo tour wraps March 29th, he’ll head back out with The 400 Unit, first to play Austin City Limits Live, and then to tour much of the US. We’re beyond happy that with his busy schedule he’s able to squeeze in a stop at Grimey’s on March 7th, the day Foxes in the Snow is released.

There are many paths to follow in an artistic career, but for Kip Moore, the choice has always been a clear “forward”–even if he has to go it alone. Astronaut Pushers, the one-time Nashville supergroup, consists of Sam Ashworth (Grammy and Academy Award-nominated songwriter), John Davis (Superdrag, The Lees Of Memory), Lindsay Jamieson (Ben Folds, Departure Lounge) and Matt Slocum (Sixpence None the Richer). Their four-song self-titled EP, originally self-released as a CD on a limited basis, showcases a wide diversity of styles performed by musicians at the top of their creative game. It was reissued on vinyl by Lost In Ohio in 2022.

The late ‘90s were a fertile time for the Nashville music scene, attracting musicians from all over the globe. It was during this time that Sam Ashworth and Matt Slocum first met, with Sam contributing a song to Sixpence None the Richer’s self-titled 1998 album. They became fast friends and began meeting at Matt’s house regularly to jam and write music. Lindsay Jamieson moved to Nashville from London a few years later and was introduced to his future bandmates at a party. A huge fan of The Sundays, Matt was fascinated to learn that Lindsay had played drums on their demos and tambourine on their records. Not long after, Sam and Lindsay discussed the idea of starting a band. During the conversation, it became clear that Matt would be an essential part of this band, so they approached him and he was interested. The Pushers started playing shows at local Nashville venues. They attracted many fellow musicians to these early shows, including Ben Folds, Fleming & John, and future member John Davis. At the same time, Lindsay was making frequent visits to RCA Studio A to track drums for Ben Folds’s album Songs for Silverman. It was also around this time that John Davis first jammed with the Astronaut Pushers. The members were fans of Superdrag and excited at the opportunity. Having come together organically, a true band chemistry emerged and an EP was recorded and released.

Cut to 2023 when ‘The Pushers’ regrouped and recorded new music, now released as the Fires of Love EP on FlatIron Recordings, featuring Ruby Amanfu on vocals. The band will celebrate this release with a free, all ages, in-store performance at Grimey’s on Saturday, February 22nd, at 4:30 PM, during BEER:30! Whether he’s expressing love in Life is Just a Vapor’s “I Knew,” warning an ex’s new conquest about the dangers ahead in “She Will,” extolling the value of holding off on sex in “Wait” or listing the ingredients for making a marriage work in “Courage My Love” (“a half-acre on your daddy’s land / and a little luck / a load of white gravel in our driveway / so we don’t get stuck in a rut /a 3-horsepower lawnmower and courage my love”), Thorn delivers his messages with consummate skill — and pinpoint precision. We hope you’ll join us on Friday, February 7th at 5:00 PM when we host “guitarist extraordinaire” (Nashville Scene) Sean Thompson to celebrate the release of his new album, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears’ Head in the Sand. The album is due out that day via Ears Over America/Missing Piece Records and we’re thrilled to welcome Thompson back to Grimey’s to launch his new creation into the world. We last hosted Thompson in the shop in 2023 when he joined current students from his alma mater, Nashville School for the Arts, for a Past, Present and Future of NSA performance, and over the years, we’ve seen Sean share our stage with many of our favorite Nashville musicians including Erin Rae and Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection. All who preorder his new album from Grimey’s (in the shop or online) will score a wristband for Thompson’s post-performance signing. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+ and guarantee entrance to our event.

Thompson has been stretching the boundaries of Nashville music for over the past decade. His nimble and lyrical guitar playing has anchored the live bands of many including Erin Rae, Teddy and the Roughriders, Emily Nenni, and Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection. But it’s his songwriting project, Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears, that’s positioned the 33-year-old as one of the most psychedelic and adventurous artists working today. Head In the Sand is not only a leap for its expansive and immersive arrangements but for how Thompson translated one of the most difficult periods of his life into his most personal and cathartic record yet.

Over 10 rollicking and undeniable tracks, the LP is a potent wake-up call to let go when things get tough. It’s about being present and embracing life’s towering highs and brutal lows head-on. When Thompson made his debut Sean Thompson’s Weird Ears in 2020 he had nothing but time to write, reflect, and tweak. With Head In the Sand, Thompson’s process couldn’t have been more different. “My mom died from cancer, my dog passed, and I had a life-altering breakup,” he says. “While that was happening I probably played 200 shows that year. I was just living on the road. This record was made while life was happening. I didn’t have the luxury to sit and think about what to do.” The strikingly autobiographical songs on the record reflect this turbulent period in Thompson’s life. Take lead single “Roll On Buddy,” which Thompson wrote immediately after his dog’s death at the beginning of a six-week tour. Over warm and ambling keyboards, Thompson sings, “You’re still with me every walk that I take / You pull me to every bush you peed on / When I scatter your ashes at the park / I know you’re going home once more.”

This album was a direct reaction to everything going on in Thompson’s life. Though he’d never approached lyrics this way before, he decided to just create freely and unselfconsciously. “It was actually natural to write about those emotionally intense things because it was so cathartic creatively and emotionally,” says Thompson. Grappling with his grief and how unmoored he felt allowed him to see the unhealthy habits he’d developed in his life. “You can go your entire life having an idea about who you're supposed to be,” he says. “You can become blinded by your ego, and live life with total blinders on and miss what’s happening around you.” The phrase ‘Head In the Sand’ became a sort of North Star for Thompson, a reminder to stop living life with the idea of yourself instead of being in the moment.

Thompson created Head In the Sand with a cast of longtime Nashville collaborators. Recorded and produced by Jake Davis, Thompson enlists bassists Alec O’Connell and Ryan Jennings, Jo Schornikow (Phosphorescent) on keys, drummer Ben Parks, Erin Rae, Michael Ruth (Rich Ruth) on synths, guitarist Jack Quiggins and steel player Spencer Cullum. Here, he substitutes the carefree twang of his debut for something more cosmic, timeless, and exploratory. “I thought, ‘Okay, man, I did a country rock record: I’m good on that for a while,” he says. “This record is way more of a portrait of who I am.” Inspired by Herbie Hancock, Frank Zappa, and the Grateful Dead, Thompson eschewed the standard singer-songwriter palette for something more cerebral. The ebullient and soaring single “Riding In The Van” captures this perfectly. Over wailing lead guitars he introspectively sings, “Through the window, the world pass by / Mountain trees so high / Winding road make you wanna cry.” When Thompson wrote that song, he thought, “This is finally the kind of music I want to be making.”

For Thompson, the 10 tracks on this LP were opportunities to let go of grief, exhaustion, and chaos to be radically present. Through his lush and cerebral explorations of disparate sounds, he found the magic of making music with his closest companions and welcomed imperfection.

Michigander, who delivers elevated and eloquent songcraft, uplifting instrumentation, and plainspoken heartland storytelling punctuated by alternative flare, has racked up over 60 million career streams globally and garnered the acclaim of NPR, Paste, Consequence, SPIN, Forbes, BrooklynVegan, Guitar World, Ones To Watch, and more. In 2016, the now Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist's independent debut single "Nineties" achieved viral success, claiming real estate on multiple major Spotify playlists. He’s made nearly 180 appearances at Nashville’s iconic Grand Ole Opry and performed multiple headline tours in the U.S., Germany, Amsterdam, and U.K., further embarking on his LOVE AIN’T PRETTY TOUR worldwide. Make plans to join us on Friday, January 31st at 4:00 PM to celebrate the release of Penny & Sparrow’s brand new album, Lefty! They’ll be performing a short, intimate set in the record shop and then signing copies of their album for event attendees* before they head out for their debut performance at The Grand Ole Opry: Opry 100 at 7:00! (Tickets are still available via The Opry plus you can always listen via WSM). *Wristband are required to participate in our signing and are free with preorder of the album on our site here. Lefty is a cross-genre double-album. Of the record they said, "We wanted to record a double album for the challenge of it, and also for the chance to be sonically rangy and eccentric. The idea of offering all sorts of sounds, structures, melodies, and lyrical approaches in 20 songs was creatively exciting to us, so we did it. Lefty is a long collection of both real and made up things. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life vignettes, dream scenarios, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions and at least two love letters. All of them belong together because each one is an extension of us, of the things we love. We are the ties that bind Lefty.

Texas natives, Baxter and Jahnke first crossed paths at UT Austin, where they developed both a fast friendship and a deeply symbiotic musical connection. Jahnke was a gifted guitarist with an ear for melody, Baxter an erudite lyricist with a mesmerizing voice and crystalline falsetto, and the duo quickly found that their vocals blended together as if they’d been singing in harmony their whole lives. Beginning with 2013’s ‘Tenboom,’ the staunchly DIY pair released a series of critically lauded records that garnered comparisons to the hushed intimacy of Iron & Wine and the adventurous beauty of James Blake, building up a devoted fanbase along the way through relentless touring and word-of-mouth buzz. NPR praised the band’s songwriting as a “delicate dance between heartache and resolve,” while The World Café raved that they’ve “steadily built a sound as attentive to detail as Simon & Garfunkel and as open to the present day as Bon Iver,” and Rolling Stone hailed their catalog as “folk music for Sunday mornings, quiet evenings, and all the fragile moments in between.” In addition to the mountain of glowing reviews, the band also earned high profile fans—including The Civil Wars’ John Paul White, who produced 2015’s ‘Let A Lover Drown You’—and extensive tour dates with everyone from Josh Ritter and Johnnyswim to Drew Holcomb and Delta Rae.

1/21 Update: Our Larkin Poe Bloom preorder has SOLD OUT! Thanks to all who participated. We will have more copies of the album available in the record store starting on release day, 1/24, however there will be NO MORE WRISTBANDS for our event available with purchase. Customers without wristbands who hope to catch their performance can join our overflow line starting at 11:00 AM on 1/25; entry will be granted based on space available on a first come, first served basis.

We hope you were able to score a wristband with preorder for our event and are able to join us in the record shop on Saturday, January 25th at noon when we’ll celebrate the release of Bloom with Larkin Poe! The band will perform a short set of songs from their new album and then sign copies of the vinyl and CD for event attendees.** **Preorders for wristbands that guarantee entrance to our event have SOLD OUT, however there will be an overflow or standby, line which can form as early as 11AM on 1/25. Our neighbors Living Waters will host local tattoo legend Cait Bush of Kustom Thrills Tattoo who will be offering free floral flash tattoos, while the brewery is offering speciality 'Bloom' lattes with notes of honey floral flavors and edible flowers. Our pals at Anaconda Vintage will host The Tilly Goose for a custom embroidery pop-up, so you can bring your own items to have embroidered or buying something from Anaconda Vintage to be embellished. Anaconda Vintage will also be distributing free Larkin Poe patches with in store purchases. In addition to all this action, Larkin Poe have invited a photographer to join in on the campus-wide festivities, so be on the lookout for a special roaming photo booth pop-up from Smilebooth.

1/11 update - Due to the wintery weather that hit our region yesterday, our Early James event has been rescheduled from today to next Saturday, January 18th. We hope you will be able to join us then!

We’re pumped to host Early James in the record shop on Saturday, January 18th at 4:30 PM for an instore performance and album signing in celebration of the release of his new album, Medium Raw. Due out Friday, January 10th via Easy Eye Sound, the new album was recorded in a house, specifically, “Honky Chateau,” an old Nashville property owned by photographer and artist Buddy Jackson. Over 100 years old, the house has plaster on the walls, plastered ceilings, old wallpaper and big oak floors. James, Auerbach and crew brought in all the recording gear themselves – including an old 50’s Universal Audio tube console which was originally built by FAME Studios’ Rick Hall. Mixing consoles were set up in an upstairs bedroom. James and the players on the album – longtime bassist Adrian Marmolejo, drummer Jeff Clemens and percussionist Sam Bacco – were all set up in different rooms downstairs. 

James notes that pretty much everything you hear on Medium Raw was, as its title suggests, cut “au naturel.” The record includes songs by James as well as those co-written with producer Dan Auerbach and top Nashville songwriter Pat McLaughlin (“I Got This Problem”); Sheryl Crow’s frequent collaborator Jeff Trott (“Nothing Surprises Me Anymore”); roots singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim (“Go Down Swinging”); Irish songwriter Mick Flannery (“Upside Down Umbrella”); and James’ former Birmingham roommate Ryan Sobb (“Unspeakable Thing”).

Update, 1/10/25 - It’s a winter wonderland in Nashville with snow expected throughout the day, today. We’ve rescheduled our Ringo Starr Look Up Listening Party for Tuesday, January 14th at 4:00 PM. We hope you can join us!!

We saw how much fun Ringo Starr and his friends (Jack White! Jimmy Page!) were having at Third Man Records in London, listening to his new country album Look Up so we decided to have a party for it too! Join us on  Tuesday, January 14th—the day Ringo headlines the Ryman Auditorium—to listen to Starr’s new record in the shop at 4:00 PM with all of us and fellow Ringo fans. Produced and co-written with T-Bone Burnett, Look Up features performances from some of Nashville’s finest like Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings and Larkin Poe, along with a host of other stellar musicians. Daniel Tashian and Bruce Sugar co-produced Starr’s Nashville-centric album for Lost Highway Records which will be available on standard black vinyl as well as CD.

In addition to spinning the album in the shop, we’ll also be distributing free posters, created just for the listening parties, as well as raffle tickets for our grand prize drawing.
