Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

The Arcs – Electrophonic Chronic CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)

In 2015, Dan Auerbach entered the studio with Leon Michels, Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and the late Richard Swift (who passed away in 2018) to record The Arcs' debut album Yours, Dreamily in a handful of freewheeling sessions over two weeks. Now, more than seven years later, those same sessions have become the bedrock on which the surviving members fleshed out the anticipated follow-up album, Electrophonic Chronic, a collection of psychedelic rock, gritty funk, and heady, soulful grooves. [An indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing and an indie store exclusive CD version including a limited-edition patch are available.]

Bass Drum Of Death – Say I Won’t CD/LP (Fat Possum)

The point of an odyssey is to return home changed-still the same person, but deepened somehow, wiser, and better, wearing your traveling scars proudly. Bass Drum Of Death's new album Say I Won't is the end result of a journey that took singer and bandleader John Barrett from a small town in Mississippi and sent him across the world and back home again. The music still rips, with blown-out guitars and drums that sound like bombs going off, and the melodies are catchier than ever, hollered in Barrett's trademark yelp. [Indie store exclusive ivory color vinyl.]

Kenny Beats – Louie CD/LP+MP3 (XL)

The first solo album from Kenny Beats is a spontaneous burst of creativity spurred by an avalanche of despair and imagination. Only after sharing it with a few close friends – who mentioned the elegiac pathos it evoked – did Kenny become convinced to release it for public consumption. Just 17 songs and 33 minutes, Louie is a hypnotic odyssey of wounded, teardrop soul. Louie presents a side of Kenny, best known for producing seminal full-length albums for some of the world's most exciting artists (Vince Staples, IDLES, Rico Nasty, Freddie Gibbs, Dominic Fike, and many more) that has not been seen by the world before. Charismatic, self-effacing, and generous, the album reveals the duality of the artist - an enigmatic, introspective searcher who has experienced pain and duress, and alchemized it via looped samples and hypnotic drum patterns. [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl.]

Deathprod – Compositions LP (Smalltown Supersound)

A complex array of homemade electronics, samplers, sound processing and analogue effects - cumulatively known as the 'Audio Virus' - combined with obsolete samplers and playback devices, to distort and transform sounds into unrecognizable relatives of their former selves. On the new album Compositions, the virus has evolved into even more fascinating and kaleidoscopic new strains. Electronically generated sounds vibrate and tremble like undiscovered metals ringing and resonating together. Sonic forms attract or repel each other as if under the influence of a strange magnetism. None of the tracks are over four minutes, but no way are these 'miniatures'. Each one contains its own fully-formed galaxy of tones and clusters, while all tracks audibly belong in the same universe.

JW Francis – Dream House CD/LP (Sunday Best)

Born in Oklahoma, raised in Paris, living in New York City, assistant to a Nobel Prize Winner, licensed New York City tour guide and Murder Mystery business owner, JW Francis is the newest signing to Sunday Best Recordings. His brand of lo-fi, utterly irresistible bedroom dream-pop takes its lead from the city JW lives in, with echoes of Jonathan Richman, The Velvet Underground and the lo-fi sound New York has been inspiring for decades. [Limited edition green vinyl.]

F*cked Up – One Day CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)

With One Day, F*cked Up has delivered one of the most energizing and intricate albums of their entire career, a massive-sounding record that arrives in deceptively small confines. The Canadian hardcore legends have been known for their epic scale in the past, from towering concept albums to 12-hour performances – so it might be a surprise that F*cked Up's sixth studio album is their shortest to date, written and recorded in the confines of one literal day (hence the title). Don't mistake size for substance, though: The band's sound has only gotten bigger, more hard charging, with even denser thickets of melody. If that sounds like a study in contrasts, well, that's F*cked Up for you – and you shouldn't expect, or want, anything different. [Indie store exclusive ‘peak blue in milky clear’ color vinyl.]

Goat – Oh Death LP (Rocket Recordings)

Released last October on CD – now available on vinyl. Formidable psychic warriors, channelers of the mystic and proponents of a spiritual quest that transcends this realm, Goat remain a band shrouded in mystery. Travelling from their inscrutable origins in the Swedish village of Korpilombo across the stages and festivals of the world in the last decade, this band has created their incendiary music entirely according to their own co-ordinates. With all this in mind, the casual observer might have guessed from its title that Requiem, their beatific and melancholic album of 2016, was to be their last. Yet the ancestral spirits summoned by their art are always restless. Thus, the eternal cycles of rebirth have triumphantly produced Oh Death - a ceremonial conflagration as powerful as any this band has made. [Limited-edition cloudberry swirl vinyl.]

The Gibson Brothers – Darkest Hour CD (Bull Run)

The Gibson Brothers have had their greatest success in the world of bluegrass, but their talent knows no bounds. Songwriting is at the core of who they are, and on Darkest Hour they deliver 12 tracks that they either wrote or co-wrote, with those 12 songs whittled down by producer Jerry Douglas from a pile of songs the guys sent him. Most of this album was recorded with a standard bluegrass configuration, but a few of the tracks have lap steel, percussion, and electric guitar masterfully blended together by Jerry.

Hammock – Love In The Void CD/LP (Hammock Music)

Shaken awake following pandemic isolation, Love In The Void pulses with a burning desire for action and connection. Hammock crests soaring crescendos awash in reverb, with lush string orchestration and emphatic drumming, heightening the stakes. Hammock's loudest album to date, Love In The Void embraces daring and vulnerability without fear. [Limited edition ‘hellfire’ opaque vinyl.]

Hardy – The Mockingbird & The Crow LP (Big Loud)

Released last week on CD – now available on vinyl. The follow up to debut album A Rock, one of the New York Times Best Albums of 2020 all-genre and a Billboard Best Country Album of 2020, The Mockingbird & The Crow is one of the most highly anticipated sophomore albums in the country format. Hardy has made his mark as "a promising purveyor of keeping the spirit of classic heavy Southern rock alive" (American Songwriter), a juggernaut artist-writer whose influence has already changed the sound and style of the genre. With his second full-length LP, he charges into uncharted territory, marrying country and rock in a two-part, 17-track duality showcase, mastering the sounds and themes of both the influences he grew up listening to with the life he grew up living.

Joe Henry – All The Eye Can See CD/2xLP (earMUSIC)

Joe Henry is one of those artists you are rarely able to find nowadays. He is passionate about his work, unbelievably talented in multiple ways and a grand singer-songwriter, not to forget a Grammy award winning producer. The prolific singer has been reshaping the definition of American folk music. Adored for his wise and thoughtful lyrics and music, he always manages to find the right words and right tunes.

Tyler Hubbard – Tyler Hubbard CD/2xLP (EMI Nashville)

Debut solo album from Florida Georgia Line's Tyler Hubbard. With 19 No. 1 singles on country radio, countless awards, and sold-out tours, Tyler Hubbard has already had a remarkable career as a songwriter and as one half of multi-platinum duo Florida Georgia Line. Now, Hubbard is embarking on a solo career with his debut solo album Tyler Hubbard. The 18-track album includes his hit single "5 Foot 9" and the songs "Dancin' In The Country" and "Small Town Me". [Limited-edition cobalt blue vinyl.]

Illiterate Light – Sunburned CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)

With Sunburned, Gorman and Cochran have turned their attention inward to their songwriting and studio craft, creating their most fully realized and ambitious work yet - one that's full of immediate songs that update and revolutionize the band's approach to making music. There are rich keyboard and programmed percussion textures now populating their songs, as well as soaring anthemic choruses, slathered with hefty doses of fuzz. "On our first record, we were very live-focused and wanted to make sure whatever we were writing was translated in person," says Gorman. "Without that crutch, we could be more adventurous and take more risks. We definitely weren't timid in the studio."

J Rocc – Beatitudes 2xLP (Stones Throw)

Beatitudes is the follow upbeat tape to A Wonderful Letter. The album is a collection of gospel sample-based beats from the legendary DJ.

Elle King – Come Get Your Wife CD/LP (Sony Nashville)

Elle King can do many things, ranging from exuberant alternative/punk to soul pop. She's also been a compelling presence in country music; winning both Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music Awards and breaking the 30-year-old, glass-ceiling record for women on the radio charts with the single "Drunk (And I Don't Want To Go Home)". She's collaborated with Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Ashley McBryde and been on tour with Chris Stapleton for the better part of 2022; it's been an unbridled love fest with Nashville's music community. Now she makes it country music official with Come Get Your Wife, a dozen glorious tracks that run a gauntlet of styles and attitudes leaving King's roots showing.

King Tuff – Smalltown Stardust CD/LP+MP3/Cassette (Sub Pop)

Smalltown Stardust is a spiritual, tender, and ultimately joyous record that might come as a shock to those with only a passing knowledge of the artist's back catalog. On Smalltown Stardust, Kyle Thomas takes us on his journey to a place where past and present collide, where he can be a dreamer in love with all that he sees. References to his Brattleboro upbringing abound, but at the core of Smalltown Stardust is Thomas's desire to commune with nature on a spiritual level. Images of the natural world, from blizzards to green mountains to cloudy days, fill the songs. "I consider nature to be my religion," he explains, and Smalltown Stardust is nothing if not a spiritual exploration.

Ned Ledoux – Buckskin LP (Powder River)

Released early last year on CD – now available on vinyl. The third full-length album from country music singer Ned Ledoux (son of late rodeo champion/country singer Chris LeDoux) delivers songs that transcend mere entertainment to celebrate a life that many aspire to, but few live.

Sg Lewis – AudioLust & HigherLove 2xLP (Astralwerks)

Sg Lewis' second album, AudioLust & HigherLove, shows the songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer creating an expansive and ambitious record made of two halves: on one end of the spectrum, he crafts the kind of nocturnal bangers that dancefloors, underground raves, pool parties, and festivals subsist on. On the other end, he accesses a higher level of timeless pop ecstasy anchored by just the right amount of breezy, hook-laden rock, organic instrumentation, and vocal eloquence.

Ava Max – Diamonds & Dancefloors CD (Atlantic)

First-generation Albanian American artist Ava Max has fast proven a true pop superstar, hailed for her seismic voice, idiosyncratic high fashion mindset, and undeniable knack for cinematic, theatrical popcraft. The RIAA multi-platinum certified global pop sensation follows-up her breakout 2020 debut Heaven & Hell with the new album Diamonds & Dancefloors which is introduced by the synth-pop summer anthem "Maybe You're The Problem". The upbeat track offers the first preview of Ava's fiercely personal sophomore effort.

Tate McCrae – I Used To Think I Could Fly LP (RCA)

I Used To Think I Could Fly is the debut studio album by Canadian singer Tate McRae. It includes the singles “Feel Like Shit”, “She's All I Wanna Be”, “Chaotic” and “What Would You Do?”.

H.C. McEntire – Every Acre CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)

If naming is a form of claiming, of being claimed, how is one tethered to both the physical landscape that surrounds us, as well as our own internal emotional landscape – at times calm, at times turbulent, and ever changing? H.C. McEntire's new album Every Acre grapples with those themes – themes that encompass grief, loss, and links to land and loved ones. And naming – claiming land, claiming self, being claimed by ancestry and heritage – permeates the hauntingly beautiful landscape that is this poignant collection of songs. [Indie store exclusive orange vinyl.]

Nosaj Thing – Continua CD/LP+MP3 (Luckyme)

Los Angeles producer and artist Nosaj Thing aka Jason W. Chung returns with his fifth album, Continua - featuring a stellar ensemble cast including HYUKOH, Toro y Moi, Kazu Makino (Blonde Redhead), serpentwithfeet, Sam Gendel, Coby Sey, Julianna Barwick, Mike Andrews, Slauson Malone, Pink Siifu, Panda Bear & Eyedress. Nosaj Thing's expertise is in crafting exquisite soundscapes that hold a mirror up to his journey from noise and punk shows at DIY venue The Smell, to his debut sets at Low End Theory, to touring with The xx and The Weeknd. Throughout, he has innovated with live experiences conceived with Tokyo-based AV savant Daito Manabe. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

Numün – Book Of Beyond LP (Joyful Noise)

Cerulean blue color vinyl pressing. Numün, the NYC psychedelic instrumental trio Pitchfork dubbed as “savvy navigators of paths less traveled”, release its second album Book Of Beyond. The new album, mastered by Kramer (Galaxie 500, Butthole Surfers, Bongwater, Low, Bill Frisell, etc.) features a unique mixture of Eastern and Western musical stylings and instrumentation including Balinese gamelan, gender wayang, and cumbuz (a 12-string fretless banjo) alongside the classic Americana instrumentation of slide guitar, baritone, mandolin and violin.

O.A.R. – The Arcade LP (Black Country Rock)

Platinum-selling artist and live band legends O.A.R. release their highly anticipated tenth studio album, The Arcade. A beautiful collision of organic instruments, modern production, and thought-provoking lyrics, it's a 10-song reaction in real-time to the new world we are all suddenly living in.

Quinn XCII – The People’s Champ CD (Republic)

Platinum-certified singer/songwriter Quinn XCII (pronounced Quinn Ninety-Two) emerged with a disarmingly catchy and dynamic personal style of his own punctuated by alternative nuances and unexpected (yet undeniable) pop prowess. His fifth full-length album The People's Champ comprises 13 brand-new tracks including the singles "Backpack" and "Common" featuring Big Sean. [An indie store exclusive autographed CD version is available. Vinyl edition due April 7.]

R. Ring – War Poems, We Rested CD/LP (Don Giovanni)

Kelley Deal met Mike Montgomery at Candyland, his Dayton, KY Studio, where she was recording a contribution for a Guided By Voices tribute album. It was the beginning of the friendship that would become R. Ring. Shortly after their work together at Candyland, Montgomery was asked to open a show for a band he was recording, and not wanting to play solo, recruited Deal to join him on stage. That show ended up sparking an LP, splits with Protomartyr, Vacation and Quailbones, and many more live shows. Now Reunited at Candyland for their second LP, titled War Poems, We Rested, R. Ring is expanding on their creative process. For this release many of the songs were written with the support of drummer Laura King (Bat Fangs, Mac McCaughan, Speed Stick), allowing the group to explore fuller arrangements from the start. [Limited-edition yellow vinyl.]

Pharis & Jason Romero – Tell ‘Em You Were Gold 2xLP (Smithsonian Folkways)

Released last summer on CD – now available on vinyl. Pharis and Jason Romero are pure craftspeople. A renowned banjo builder, Jason spent years developing his own personal designs, and on Tell 'Em You Were Gold, his handmade instruments take center stage. Over a half dozen uniquely crafted banjos are played by the duo throughout the album. There's conviction and delicacy in this music, which ranges from duets that showcase the pair's deep psychic and artistic connection to solo banjo meditations and full band romps. Recorded over six days in an old barn in Horsefly, British Columbia, Tell ‘Em You Were Gold displays the multiple Juno Award-winning duo playing music that is honest, direct, and reflective of life's beauty and knottiness.

Samia – Honey CD/LP/Cassette (Grand Jury)

There's a line on Honey, the latest album from Nashville-via-NYC songwriter Samia, about Aspen Grove, a collection of 40,000 trees in the plains of North America, all connected by a single expansive root system. There's no stronger metaphor for the audience the 25-year-old empathy engine has been generating since she began releasing music seven years ago. Her songs, her fans, her friends: one enormous, interconnected ecosystem. Honey, comprised of 11 new moments of catharsis, is by and for that organism. While her previous work played with turning the personal into the universal, she's breaking confident new ground here. The Baby was loose and bubbling, like wearing your mom's big shoes while playing dress up. The knees on 2021 EP Scout were not so wobbly, and Samia began singing of gained perspective and softened edges. Honey is tight and heavy – the moment you notice you're older now and those shoes don't slip as much. [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl. All copies at Grimey’s are signed by Samia!]

Sam Smith – Gloria CD/LP (Capitol)

Following the global success of the unstoppable single "Unholy" featuring pop diva Kim Petras, British pop, soul, and R&B superstar Sam Smith delivers their fourth studio album, Gloria. Made with longtime collaborators Jimmy Napes, Stargate and Max Martin stablemate ILYA, Gloria is not only a creative revelation but something of a personal revolution for the celebrated artist. Lyrically, the subjects dive deep and wide, into contemporary narratives around sex, lies, passion, self-expression, and imperfection. Smith says, "It feels like emotional, sexual and spiritual liberation. It was beautiful, with this album, to sing freely again. Oddly, it feels like my first-ever record. And it feels like a coming of age." Recorded in Jamaica, Los Angeles and London, Gloria is the dazzling, sumptuous, sophisticated, unexpected and at times thrilling, edgy sound of Sam's creative heart today. [An indie store exclusive autographed CD edition is available.]

Winter – What Kind Of Blue Are You? LP (Bar/None)

What Kind Of Blue Are You?, Winter's sophomore release with Bar/None Records, is an emotional excavation of Samira Winter's purest self. It's another stunning work in a canon that's established her as one of Los Angeles' most enduring, consistently-head-turning dream poppers, the melancholy and bittersweet beauty that's been with her throughout Winter's existence now pushed to center stage. Musically, the LP's 10 songs reconnect with the earliest incarnation of Winter, re-emerging as an in-control 1991 songstress incarnate for the modern era.

America – America [Reissue/1972] LP (Friday Music)

Translucent gold vinyl. Before America was released in the United States, imports of the original 1971 UK version would receive early airplay with the song "Sandman" on many rock stations here. Warner wanted to add another song to the album, they were looking for a big Top 40 hit and they went with a overseas track "A Horse With No Name" that appeared initially on a rare EP, and as predicted they scored with a number one top charting pop and album rock single. The album was re-released here in early 1972 with "A Horse With No Name" and became one of the biggest debut album releases in recording history by Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek.

Bad Books – Bad Books [Reissue/2010] LP (Miscellaneous)

Color vinyl pressing. A true accident if there ever was one; Bad Books was never an intended nor calculated side project of Kevin Devine and Manchester Orchestra's Andy Hull. Though the two musicians have collaborated and performed together on tour and within the Favorite Gentlemen community of artists for years now, the genesis of Bad Books came from a simple idea to fill space and time off the road by collaborating on a small batch of songs together. n contrast to previous outputs from Manchester Orchestra and Devine, Bad Books cradles a much more noticeable pop aesthetic and energy than either artist has probably ever showcased before.

[The five-CD edition adds a wealth of bonus takes and live tracks.]

Marvin Gaye – Greatest Hits Live In ’76 CD/LP (Mercury Studios)

One of the most gifted, visionary, and enduring talents ever launched into orbit by the Motown hit machine, Marvin Gaye blazed the trail for the continued evolution of popular black music. Moving from lean, powerful R&B, to stylish, sophisticated soul, to finally arrive at an intensely political and personal form of artistic self-expression, his work not only redefined soul music as a creative force but also expanded its impact as an agent for social change. Gaye performs a hit-laden set at a sold out Edenhalle Concert Hall in Amsterdam during his first tour of Europe in 1976 here. The concert features a number of classics, including "What's Going On", "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Let's Get It On" and many more.
