New Releases

The 1975 – Being Funny In A Foreign Country CD/LP (Dirty Hit)

Giulio Aldinucci - Real LP (Karlrecords)

Italian sound artist Giulio Aldinucci returns with his fourth album on Karlrecords: Real is another truly masterfully composed and sound-designed ambient masterpiece and a more than worthy follow-up to the critically acclaimed Borders And Ruins (2017), Disappearing In A Mirror (2018), and Shards Of Distant Times (2020), all of which made it onto many avant-garde-oriented best-of-the-year lists. Aldinucci's massive layers of sound, built from field recordings and an array of electronic gear, blend drone-y ambient with heavenly voices/sacred music that create an atmosphere of a consolatory melancholy -- alien, but with a graspable presence of human souls. In the words of Giulio himself: "Real is a reflection on the endless possibility of sonic transformation, the ability we have to create new realities transmuting the soundscape around us and the inner soundscape inside us, even only by imagining it."

Alter Bridge – Pawns & Kings CD/2xLP (Napalm)

Since 2004, Alter Bridge has been one of the most consistent bands to successfully represent the rock and metal communities with their driving melodies, blazing guitar riffs and topical lyrics that resonate with fans around the globe. Their seventh album, Pawns & Kings, continues that trend with 10 unforgettable new additions to their catalog. [Indie store exclusive CD and indie exclusive ‘sun yellow’ color vinyl.]

Ashe – Rae CD/LP (Mom + Pop Music)

Like a character out of your favorite movie or a novel you can't put down, Ashe possesses her own mystique rooted in quiet wisdom, yet amplified with vibrance and spirit. For as much as she embodies timeless California cool (northern or southern, take your pick), she's got enough gusto and moxie to hang on the East Coast or down South. Musically, she slides untouchable hooks over dusty instrumentation, connecting Laurel Canyon eloquence with UK rock scope. After an injury sidelined her future as a gymnast, she immersed herself in music as a kid. Now, she turns the page on another chapter of her story on her second full-length album, Rae. [Limited-edition grape w/ white splatter color vinyl.]

Black Lips – Apocalypse Love CD/LP+MP3 (Fire)

The Black Lips return with their tenth studio effort Apocalypse Love, scorched with their trademark menace, it cryogenically mutates all recognized musical bases; it spins yarns about vintage Soviet synths, Benzedrine stupors, coup de' tats, stolen valor and certified destruction, all set against a black setting sun. Since the turn of the decade the band have transformed from austere country pioneers, into a set of Lynchian surrealists, hellbent on recalibrating the history of rock ‘n' roll. Apocalypse Love is an album that emanates from a dive bar jukebox in the back of your mind; with a playlist that bends between tub thumping doom-glam, Plastic Ono singalongs, cocktail-shaken space age pop, Morricone reverberations and lo-fi outsider acoustic-punk, with mariachi horns, theremins, drum machines and harmonies filtering through the infectious melodies. [Limited-edition violet color vinyl.]

Cory Branan – When I Go Ghost CD/LP (Blue Élan)

Following the release of five albums and much critical acclaim, Memphis-based Cory Branan spent the pandemic-forced time off working on a new record with producer and Grammy-Award-winning engineer, Jeremy Ferguson. With a guest list that includes Jason Isbell, Garrison Starr, Brian Fallon, and more. When I Go I Ghost puts Branan's clever songwriting and diverse musical background on display.

John Carpenter – Firestarter LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)

The horror master John Carpenter is back with his Halloween franchise collaborators Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter for their infectious new soundtrack to the 2022 adaptation of Stephen King's Firestarter. This marks the first official soundtrack that the team has composed together outside of the Halloween franchise and their inspiration and evolution as a creative team is on full display.

Ken Carson – X LP (Opium/Interscope)

White color vinyl pressing. Rising Atlanta rapper Ken Carson drops his hotly anticipated major-label debut album, X. Equal parts enigmatic and prolific, Carson represents a shift in melodic rap. On the 20-track opus, the 21-year-old continues to carve out his own space in the rager lane, showcasing more versatility than ever before while honing the signature sound that propelled him to prominence.

Tom Chaplin – Midpoint LP (BMG)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Third solo studio album from the Keane frontman. Produced by Ethan Johns, Midpoint is an emotionally charged collection of thirteen brand new songs sung with beauty and grace. At 43, Chaplin now finds himself at an equilibrium. Or, in fact, a midpoint. On the title track, Tom's voice soars, painting a picture of a man who is both bemused and confused with thoughts of his midlife.

Callista Clark – Real To Me: The Way I Feel CD (Big Machine)

With her debut album Real To Me: The Way I Feel, Callista Clark exudes both strength and vulnerability in pointed lyrics that leave no doubt where she stands. Co-writing all 10 tracks, her collection reveals a songwriter of considerable depth and wit and a gifted singer with confidence and an impressive presence unique to someone her age. It all adds up to a powerful launch for an artist whose music is poised to become the soundtrack for the heartbreaks and triumphs of her generation.

Lucrecia Dalt – ¡Ay!, CD/LP+MP3 (RVNG Int’l)

Lucrecia Dalt channels sensory echoes of growing up in Colombia on her new album ¡Ay!, where the sound and syncopation of tropical music encounter adventurous impulse, lush instrumentation, and metaphysical sci-fi meditations in an exclamation of liminal delight. In sound and spirit, ¡Ay! Is a heliacal exploration of native place and environmental tuning, where Dalt reverses the spell of temporal containment. Through the spiraling tendencies of time and topography, Lucrecia has arrived where she began. CD edition includes lyrics and an essay by Miguel Prado in Spanish and English. [Limited edition translucent red vinyl.]

Dr. John – Things Happen That Way LP+7” (Rounder/UMGD)

Recently released on CD – now available on indie store exclusive color vinyl featuring a bonus 7”. Posthumous release from the New Orleans legend. Throughout his six-decade long career, Dr. John embodied a near-mythic multitude of musical identities: Global Ambassador of New Orleans funk, jazz, and R&B, visionary bluesman, rock 'n' roll innovator, and a massively revered high priest of psychedelic voodoo. Things Happen That Way, his final studio album, adds another dimension to his musicality: a lifelong affinity for country & western.

The Early November – Twenty CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Twenty effortlessly straddles the divide between then and now; its 10 songs casting a backwards glance at the days and years gone by, while also looking forward to the future. A collection of both brand-new tracks and older ones written during the band's life to date, the result is something of a paradox: this is (and isn't) a new Early November record. [Indie store exclusive ‘baby pink’ & white vinyl.]

Brian Eno – FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE CD/LP (Verve)

FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE is the 22nd solo studio album from Brian Eno and the first since 2017's Reflection. The album was recorded and produced by him at his studio in West London and sees Eno singing on most tracks. It's a sonically beguiling, ultimately optimistic exploration of the narrowing, precarious future of humanity and our planet. As Eno himself concludes, "Briefly, we need to fall in love again, but this time with Nature, with Civilization and with our hopes for the future."

Far Cry & Shara Nova – The Blue Hour CD (Nonesuch)

The Blue Hour is a song cycle written collaboratively by the female composers Rachel Grimes (The Rachels), Angélica Negrón, Shara Nova, Caroline Shaw, and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The cycle was commissioned by, and is performed with, the Boston-based chamber orchestra A Far Cry. (Nova also is featured as vocal soloist.) Set to excerpts from Carolyn Forché's epic poem On Earth, the music follows one woman's journey through the space between life and death via thousands of hallucinatory and non-linear images. Exploring memories of childhood, of war, of love, and of loss, The Blue Hour amplifies the beauty, pain, and fragility of human life from a collective female perspective.

Field Medic – grow your hair long if you’re wanting to see something change LP (Run For Cover)

Limited-edition ‘eco mix’ vinyl. Few songwriters can pinpoint difficult emotions and address them with such devastating clarity and disarming humor quite like Field Medic. The long-running musical project of Los Angeles-based musician Kevin Patrick Sullivan, he makes music that's so startlingly honest that it can cut the tension in any room. He's excelled at self-reflection and making deceptively simple folk songs about loneliness, sobriety, and growing up. But for grow your hair long if you’re wanting to see something you can change, he decided to completely reinvent his approach to recording. The result is his most ambitious, fully formed, and emotionally resonant collection of tracks yet.

A.O. Gerber – Meet Me At The Gloaming CD/LP (Father/Daughter)

On her new album, Meet Me At The Gloaming, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, A.O. Gerber carefully grapples with the constraints she was taught as a child to reach for the flourishing that comes when we look past the black and white, and into the gray gauze of the in-between. "I was thinking about how damaging it can be to exist in that binary space of good and evil," Gerber explains. "When we see everything in either/or's, we lose the nuance and complexity that make life rich enough to be worth living." By interlocking memory and imagination, Gerber crafts a gleaming future, where the light and the dark don't just coexist-they create a new color entirely. [Limited-edition transparent gold vinyl.]

A Great Big Pile Of Leaves – Pono LP (Topshelf)

Limited white, green, and blue color vinyl pressing. Produced by A Great Big Pile Of Leaves and recorded primarily at their home studio, Pono was mixed by touring guitarist Matthew Weber at Gradwell House Recording and mastered by Dave Downham (Beach Slang, Into It. Over It.). With eight years between releases, the band recalls how the recording process of Pono felt like they were making their first record, adding "we worked at our own pace with no preconceived notion of what it needed to be."

The Harlots Of 42nd Street – Refuse To Be Misused LP (Sundazed)

Limited lipstick pink color vinyl pressing. Includes a 15-page liner note zine. Legendary lost glitter-punk. Once called the Doll's front man's "favorite band," these glamazons released one coveted 45 in the early '70s. Turns out they cut eight more tracks all stronger than that single. With gender fluid jams about S&M, spray paint, and bubble gum, this high heeled kick to the teeth finally leaps from glammy glitter punk myth to your turntable. [CD version due November 11.]

Isokratisses – Cry With Tears: Greek-Albanian Songs Of Many Voices CD/LP (Third Man)

Isokratisses (Greek for "women who sing the "iso" or "drone") is a vocal ensemble comprised of eight women who carry the ancient tradition of polyphonic songs from Epirus: a region in northern Greece and southern Albania. Born and reared in the Greek speaking villages around Deropoli and Politsani in Albania, the women of Isokratisses have sung these songs since childhood. The group ranges in age from 19 to 56 with some sisters in the group as well as an aunt. They were nurtured by this archaic music, listening, and singing it with their family and friends. The songs were passed down from generation to generation. The group started its artistic activity in 2015, after the singer Anna Katsi took the initiative to encourage the younger members to perform regularly. The communal nature of polyphonic singing is a way of revitalizing an art that has declined in recent years and to reassert the primacy of female voices in the southern Balkans. Singing these songs builds an invisible bridge that connects the present with the past, the memories of childhood travel with the immediacy of daily life. [Indie store exclusive maroon vinyl.]

Judah & The Lion – Revival LP (Judah & The Lion)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Revival is a collection of songs that speaks to the band's journey back to innocence and hope through reclamation. Recorded in Asheville, NC, the album is an attempt to recapture the innocence of their youth, embracing the sadness and loss of the last few years and welcoming the future with a renewed energy and spirit that harkens back to their earliest days.

Kodaline – Our Roots Run Deep CD/2xLP (Fantasy)

Our Roots Run Deep, Kodaline's brand-new, stripped-down, 17-track live album features a cross-section of the group's most treasured tunes and three illuminating covers. When Kodaline stepped on stage at Dublin's sold-out 3Olympia Theatre in early 2022, the band felt a deep sense of renewal, of their friendship, their brotherhood, and their musical community. Our Roots Run Deep is a spectacular showcase for the purity of their artistry and the profound musical impact they've had on a generation. [Indie store exclusive translucent ‘ruby red’ vinyl.]

L.A. Salami – Ottoline CD/2xLP (Sunday Best Recordings)

Since the release of 2020's acclaimed The Cause Of Doubt & A Reason To Have Faith, London based Lookman Adekunle Salami has been busy working on the eagerly-awaited follow up. After five studio albums, Salami's music continues to push genre boundaries. He explains that Ottoline's lead single "Desperate Times, Mediocre Measures" - "is a song that tackles the idea of the cyclical and corrosive nature of power structures across our societies - Hierarchical Structures that, like all structures in our reality, are made up of, and reinforced by people who find themselves, more often than not, enforcing the very corrupted elements of those structures purely due to the fact that this can become the prime method of propping themselves up." Very much a shift in a new musical direction, Lookman enlisted the help of renowned string arranger Stephen Bentley-Klein, who has worked with the likes of John Barry and Deep Purple, to provide the lush orchestration which works in perfect tandem with Salami's thought-provoking word play. [Limited-edition yellow vinyl.]

Daniel Lanois – Player, Piano CD (Modern Recordings)

Press play on Lanois' captivating new instrumental collection, Player, Piano, and you'll be transported, too. Each song here is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Lanois recorded the entire collection himself, capturing a series of gentle, exotic piano performances at his studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz, and the results are both intimate and expansive all at once. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains. More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways. [Vinyl edition due November 18.]

Lightning Seeds – See You In The Stars LP (BMG)

The Lightning Seeds make a most welcome return with See You In The Stars, their first new album in over ten years. The intoxicating 10-track collection is kick started with the feel good warmth of single "Sunshine". Ian Broudie says of "Sunshine": "The song is about the sun being the source of life. I've had many dreams worrying about the future of an uncertain world but then when the sun shines everything feels more positive and hopeful. It's about being optimistic and seeing the best in things and I hope that it will warm everyone's heart." Most of the songs were written by Broudie. One of the album highlights, "Emily Smiles", was co-written with Terry Hall while "Great to Be Alive" is a co-write with James Skelly (The Coral). [Indie store exclusive blue w/ smoke color vinyl.]

Liraz - Roya LP (Glitterbeat)

The third album from award-winning Israeli-Persian singer Liraz is an invitation to dream. Anthems, love ballads, glittery Middle Eastern dance tunes -- a collection of 11 tracks that enrich that signature blend of tradi-modern rhythms and retro-Persian sonics. Liraz and her Israeli sextet (three women, three men) recorded Roya over ten days in Istanbul, in a basement studio hidden from public view and crackling with creativity. With them, on violin, viola and the tar, the wasp-waisted wooden Iranian lute, were composers and musicians from the Iranian capital, Tehran. Liraz grew up dancing to the music of divas such as Ramesh and Googoosh, who were celebrated in Tehran in the '60s and '70s, the golden age of Persian pop, but she also loved female singer-songwriters like Kate Bush and Tori Amos. With each album, Liraz has grown bolder, more outspoken (ask her about Palestine and she'll extol Palestinian rights, too). Recorded in secrecy in Istanbul with her band from Tel Aviv and risk-defying Iranian musicians from Tehran. A musical portal to a place of peace, joy and unfettered freedom.

Marxist Love Disco Ensemble – MLDE 2xLP (Mr. Bongo)

Sounding simultaneously from the past, the present, and the future, the debut album MLDE by Marxist Love Disco Ensemble seeks to eradicate both the trite from disco and the sobriety from political music. Half poetic, half tongue-in-cheek, this stunning compact eight-track album is influenced by Eastern European and Mediterranean ‘70s disco records. Merging disco, post-disco ‘80s pop, and boogie into the fold, MLDE was recorded using only analogue instruments, giving it warmth and space. Recorded on cassette, ¼ and ½ inch tape, this gives moments of lo-fi abstraction between the beats of an aggressive, tight drum kit. Instruments used for this recording range from saxophone, trumpet, harpsichord, guitar, and rare analogue synthesizers. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

Municipal Waste – The Last Rager 12” (Nuclear Blast)

Virginia metalheads Municipal Waste return with a fresh EP pressed on green w/ yellow and black splatter color vinyl.

Ocean Alley – Low Altitude Living CD/2xLP (Unified Music Group)

Ocean Alley has captivated audiences around the world with their infectious melody lines and memorable blend of psychedelic-surf-rock. Their track “Confidence” took out top spot in the triple j Hottest 100 of 2018, with their acclaimed second album “Chiaroscuro” voted #2 on triple j's 2018 album of the year listener poll and peaking at #11 on the ARIA Charts. The band have solidified their position as one of Australia's most exciting touring acts, making their mark on the local and international circuit by playing an abundance of headline shows and festivals, including selling 25,000 tickets across 15 sold out shows on their most recent headline tour of Australia. 2019 saw the band continue their consistent touring schedule, selling out countless shows across North America, Europe, UK and New Zealand. Low Altitude Living is their fourth album. [Indie store exclusive lime green vinyl.]

Oh Wonder – 22 Make LP (Republic)

22 Make is the 2nd half of alt-pop-duo Oh Wonder's 2021 album, 22 Break. Through powerful & intimate music, 22 Break unpicked a turbulent period in their story using universal themes of loneliness, inadequacy, resentment, & fear of the future experienced by a couple in real-time during a pandemic. Coming out of 22 Break and the soul-searching it forced them to do, the duo married and created 22 Make, an album that soundtracks the light at the end of a tunnel and completes the dual project.

Plains – I Walked With You A Ways CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Hitting play on the debut album from Plains, the duo composed of Waxahatchee's Katie Crutchfield and Jess Williamson, we're immediately teleported into a world of Southern sunsets, wide open spaces, and the unapologetic nature of Country music. Plains began out of Crutchfield's and Williamson's mutual love for each other's music and after trading albums (Saint Cloud and Sorceress, respectively) in early 2020. Feeling that it was time to have a separate project that could reflect a different side of her creative inspirations, Katie felt that Jess was the perfect fit for a collaboration, and they set off to create I Walked With You A Ways. Written between Kansas City, Los Angeles, and Marfa, the album was recorded in Durham, NC with collaborator and producer Brad Cook. The creative magic of only a few vocal takes, tracking with a band comprised of Spencer Tweedy and Phil Cook, gives the album a feel of fresh, on-the-spot conception. [Indie store exclusive translucent pink vinyl.]

Romeo Poirier - Living Room LP (Faitiche)

Living Room is the third solo album by Roméo Poirier and his debut for Faitiche. The French musician and producer transforms the layering of different times into a free-flowing pulse that sounds both nostalgic and mysteriously ahistorical. Poirier's music emerges from a continual questioning and reformulation of his own oeuvre and thus of his own past, drawing on an ever-expanding archive of self-recorded loops. "I always resample myself, using fragments of a track to make a new one, as an ongoing process," he explains: "The sound is evolving with me in parallel and the loops carry in their DNA all transformational stages, filled with previous tracks, sedimented." Originally a drummer, Poirier connects his various sources almost without a clearly identifiable beat. He prefers an organic pulse, mutable like the human sense of time and its fluidity. The aquatic feel of certain tracks on Living Room is no coincidence: among other devices, he uses a waterproof loudspeaker and a hydrophone to play back and re-record tracks in the bathtub.

Poster Paints – Poster Paints LP (Ernest Jenning)

Poster Paints seamlessly meld together the glorious, ‘90s indie-pop-tinged vocals of Carla J Easton (TeenCanteen, The Vaselines) with the rich shoegaze guitar of Simon Liddell (Frightened Rabbit, Olympic Swimmers, fusing together two burning talents who met initially through Carla's work with The Vaselines. Think the grit of The Twilight Sad, the melodies of Teenage Fanclub, and the vocals of Camera Obscura's Traceyanne Campbell, a combination so timeless that it feels as if Poster Paints should have existed for many years already.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Return Of The Dream Canteen CD/2xLP/Cassette (WB)

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' new surprise release Return Of The Dream Canteen marks the band's second album of 2022, hot on the heels of the platinum-selling chart topper Unlimited Love which was released in April. It is also the band's second Rick Rubin produced record of 2022 and reinforces their reputation as a band at their absolute peak, riding the crest of an undeniable creative wave. "We went in search of ourselves as the band that we have somehow always been," notes the group. "Just for the fun of it we jammed and learned some old songs. Before long we started the mysterious process of building new songs. A beautiful bit of chemistry meddling that had befriended us hundreds of times along the way. Once we found that slip stream of sound and vision, we just kept mining. With time turned into an elastic waist band of oversized underwear, we had no reason to stop writing and rocking.” [A deluxe vinyl gatefold vinyl edition featuring a poster is available. An indie store exclusive pressing features a bonus track.]

Randy Rogers Band – Homecoming CD/LP (Tommy Jackson Rec.)

Homecoming is a renaissance orchestrated by Radney Foster. “We went back to our roots working with Radney again as well as recording this record at two iconic studios that produced some of our most successful music. Dance with the one that brought you.” This deeply personal and nostalgic set of songs features previously released fan-favorite "Picture Frames".

Across these fourteen tracks, the outside world seeps in and the inside world crawls out. The result is a stunning and quietly moving work that reflects the journeys we take through the physical and spiritual realms of ourselves to show up for the world. To capture the effortless blend of electronic, ambient, folk, and rock, Ballentine and her partner and collaborator Noah Weinman brought in producer Andrew Sarlo to record at Chicken Shack studio in Upstate New York, close to where Ballentine grew up. [Limited-edition cloudy white vinyl.]

Son Little – Like Neptune LP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Conceived in a cabin overlooking the Delaware River in upstate New York, Son Little's latest album, Like Neptune, trades in the existential dread permeating previous work for unbridled joy and self-acceptance. In this verdant space of freedom, Son Little transmutes the chronic pain of self-doubt into a beautiful opus about overcoming generational trauma, decorating the altar of the primordial blues, and elevating the labor of healing to high art. Noticeably confident from the opening note, Son Little prioritizes his signature rasp as the chief instrument of every song on a 12-track meditation on the mortal struggle to achieve inner peace. Doling out a pearl-strung collection of successive epiphanies he engages each of his re-invigorated parts, empowering them to finally speak freely, with him as the vessel.

Surprise Chef – Education & Recreation LP (Big Crown)

Surprise Chef's music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet's distinct sound pulls from ‘70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip-hop. They push the boundaries of instrumental soul and funk with their own approach honed by countless hours in the studio, studying the masters, and perhaps most importantly, the "tyranny of distance" that dictates a unique perspective to their music. [Indie store exclusive translucent red vinyl.]

Tourist – Inside Out LP (Monday Recordings LTD)

Deeply personal fourth studio album from Grammy Award-winning UK electronic artist, producer, and songwriter Tourist who's celebrating 10 years of releasing music.

Tove Lo – Dirt Femme CD (Pretty Swede)

Multi-platinum selling, Grammy-nominated artist Tove Lo releases her fifth studio album, Dirt Femme. The album boasts an impressive lineup of special guests, including SG Lewis (appearing on two tracks), Channel Tres and First Aid Kit. “Tove Lo’s songbook is filled with tracks about using drugs and sex to escape harsher realities and Dirt Femme laces that work with a newfound sense of maturity. Closer ‘How Long’, initially featured on the soundtrack to HBO’s Euphoria, sees her narrator begging for someone else’s relationship to end so she can be inserted in it, creating a track as alluring as it is intentionally selfish. Even the lightweight aphrodisiac banger ‘Pineapple Slice’, which already contains a great line about how she will ‘hold your hand with my thighs’, still makes a point about how men complain about not finding love in the club while women find it all too easily. Even the slick ‘Kick In The Head’ seeks release through pleasure, giving clubgoers something to chew on while coating a dancefloor in sweat.” – Evan Sawdey, Pop Matters [Vinyl edition due March 3.]

Wild Pink – ILYSM CD/2xLP (Royal Mountain)

Over the course of 12 chameleonic tracks, the New York-bred rock band build another world inhabited by ghosts and angels and aliens, inciting a strange and lovely daze as the backdrop shifts from the mundane (subdivisions, highways, hotel parking lots) to the extraordinary (deserts, battlefields, the moon). But within its vast imagination lies a potent truth-telling on the part of singer/guitarist John Ross, whose lyrics closely examine his recent struggle with cancer. [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl.]

Both Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are regarded as top tier lyricists known for pushing the envelope of creativity in their writing, while covering a wide range of topics and moods. However, sometimes things are inherently simple. Take for example, the origin of their collaboration, born from a mutual appreciation for each other as artists which became fully realized when Aesop Rock invited Homeboy Sandman to join him on tour in 2015. Traveling the country together, they built a connection beyond the music, resulting in a friendship that led to recording a few songs together, and before they knew it, there was an infestation... The title track immediately demands the listener's attention with a chugging drum lead by The African International's King Tuch, setting the pace for Boadi's colorful orchestration to follow. “Money Is The Root Of Evil” claims its own space as a musical melting pot and reflects the excitement Boadi was learning to harness as a musician in his newfound home of Chicago. Cheryl Glasgow – Glued To The Spot [Reissue/1987] 7” (Numero)

It's always summer somewhere, but especially so wherever Cheryl Glasgow's carefree clubber "Glued To The Spot" plays. An absolute earworm from its first nylon strums, Glasgow's Sade -adjacent, jazz vocalese sweeps into a warm-up tempo groove and never quite breaks a sweat. Issued on Ross Anderson's short-lived, London-based Live label, "Glued To The Spot" swept through the club scene briefly in 1987, disembarking for warmer shores when the season changed. [A translucent blue color vinyl pressing is available.]

An interpreter of sound, his takes on these familiar originals are introspective, well thought variations that he truly makes his own. Fresh from the attic of the acid archives, this first ever reissue of this '71 gem features unissued selections from the original '60s session. [CD version due October 28.]

JUNEI' – Let’s Ride b/w You Must Go On [Reissue/2015] 7” (Numero)

The back half of the decade was spent touring with Albert King, Curtis Mayfield, and The Emotions, before returning home to Gary, Indiana, to focus on his own sound. In 1985, JUNEI's girlfriend brought home a suite of Fostex home studio gear, including a 12-channel board, eight-track tape machine, and a halftrack for mix downs. He added a Yamaha drum machine and a Maestro echoplex and started his solo project. [Limited-edition translucent green vinyl.]

Maha - Orkos LP (Habibi Funk)

With a strong and energetic voice, equally grounded in both jazz and Egyptian vocal traditions, Maha sings over instrumentals that offer a wide palette of influences, sonically emblematic of the cultural changes that were occurring in the country in the late 1970s. The album features rich compositions and productions by renowned Egyptian musician Hany Shenoda, whose group, Al Massrieen, also had an album reissued by Habibi Funk in 2017. From the funk sounds of “Law Laffeina El Ard”; the moody, mellow sounds of “Kabl Ma Nessallem We Nemshy”, or “We Mesheet;” to excursions into Latin sounds in the title track “Orkos,” and disco with “Ana Gaya” the album is an amalgamation of genres that stands out from the immense creativity present in Egypt at the time.

Jack McDuff – Live At Parnell’s 3xLP (Soul Bank Music)

Jazz organist 'Brother' Jack McDuff was second only to the infamous Jimmy Smith in terms of fame and the impact he made with the King of keyboard instruments - the Hammond B-3 Organ. Live At Parnell’s is made up of 15 tracks selected from a week-long engagement in June 1982, featuring Danny Wollinski on sax, guitarist Henry Johnson and Garrick King on the drums. Chuck Prophet – Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins [Reissue/2017] LP (Yep Roc)

Limited red vinyl pressing. Chuck Prophet described Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins as California Noir. The state has always represented the Golden Dream, and it's the tension between romance and reality that lurks underneath the surface in all noir films and paperbacks, and that connects these songs. Doomed love, inconsolable loneliness, rags to riches to rags again, and fast-paced violence are always on the menu on the Left Coast.

The Pyramids – Aomawa: The 1970s Recordings 4xCD/4xLP (Strut)

Now available on CD. Strut present the first box set release to bring together the 1970s recordings of The Pyramids, led by Idris Ackamoor. Their music is unique among the varied canon of avant-garde and experimental music of 1970s America: high intensity African-styled percussion topped with songs, chants, and horns, laced with African instruments, and arranged into long, flowing suites that surge and roll.

Bridget St. John - Jumble Queen LP (Our Swimmer)

Originally released in 1974. Our Swimmer present this first-ever vinyl reissue from a UK songwriting hero. English singer-songwriter Bridget St. John grew up in a musical family in Surrey, beginning on piano, viola, and trumpet before picking up the guitar in high school. In the late 1960s she met the brilliant John Martyn who quickly became a fan and brought her music to a larger audience, which included the legendary DJ John Peel, for whose label Dandelion St. John recorded her first three albums. Jumble Queen, St. John's fourth album, was originally released in 1974 on Chrysalis. Featuring help from members of Jethro Tull, King Crimson alum Michael Giles, American guitarist Stefan Grossman, and, most surprisingly, founding Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, the album is heady, dreamy folk-rock that stands up alongside the singer's more well-known Dandelion albums. St. John's breathy, earthen vocal timbre perfectly complements the lovelorn lyrical content. With a more subdued sound than the rock-heavy backing group might suggest, Jumble Queen is an essential bit of UK folk-rock and singer-songwriter brilliance.

Through The Sparks – Lazarus Beach [Reissue/2006] LP (Skybucket)

Through The Sparks' release, Lazarus Beach was their first official full-length recording for Skybucket Records. The collection includes the cream of a twenty-plus song crop, recorded at the band's Alamalibu Studios in the first half of 2006. While hosting several Birmingham guest musicians and utilizing the band's multi-instrumental talents, it keeps Through The Sparks' guitar-and piano-rock format at the forefront. While there are still the noise and synth-laden marshes, horn and big-harmony choruses and crescendos loom over beds of ukulele, honky-tonk piano, funeral home organ and pedal steel. Of course, there's still a copious number of gleaming guitars and a few signature triplet beats.
