Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Emma Anderson - Pearlies LP (Sonic Cathedral)
The debut album from Emma Anderson, co-founder of British shoegaze/dream pop band Lush, finds her teaming up with producer James Chapman (aka Maps) for a collection that combines effervescent electronic pop with psych and folk textures. Following the abrupt end of Lush's brief reunion tour in 2016, Anderson began working with Robin Guthrie, formerly of the Cocteau Twins, and cellist and string arranger Audrey Riley, both of whom encouraged her to sing her own songs. When Sonic Cathedral introduced her to James Chapman at the start of 2022, Pearlies quickly took shape and blossomed into a masterpiece, the perfect mix of Emma's idiosyncratic songwriting and James' electronic production nous. The album ranges from the unexpectedly funky first single "Bend The Round," to folky finger-picking and film theme references, via psych leaning electronic pop reminiscent of Goldfrapp or Melody's Echo Chamber, to the infectious Stereolab-style groove of closer "Clusters."
Atmosphere – Talk Talk CDEP/12” (Rhymesayers)
The title of the previous Atmosphere album, So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously, evokes the multiversal storytelling that's recently vaulted into the mainstream consciousness. Now with their latest effort, the irrepressible Talk Talk EP, Slug and Ant dart across space-time to grab hold of the timeline where they became titans of the electro-rap that was foundational to their youths. Evoking artists like Kraftwerk and Egyptian Lover, Atmosphere makes decades old visions of the future seem new once again. [Limited-edition pink vinyl.]
Blk Odyssy – Diamonds & Freaks 2xLP (Earthchild)
Double amber color vinyl. Diamonds & Freaks is the second studio album from producer/artist/visionary, Blk Odyssy. Following up the critically acclaimed debut album, Blk Vintage, Diamonds & Freaks is a concept album that tells the story of a man enslaved by his lustful addictions. The record is presented as an erotic novel by Keisha Plum with narration by Bootsy Collins, both of whom offer a stark contradiction to the vivid and edgy content of the songs. The record contains elements of soul, hip-hop, and pop-seamlessly blended to create a fresh and distinct sound and features appearances by Cory Henry, Bootsy Collins, KIRBY, Rapsody, Eimaral Sol, Grace Sorensen, STOUT, & The Alchemist.
Brandy – Christmas With Brandy LP (Motown)
Recently released on CD – now available on red vinyl. A generational talent who is revered by her peers and fans alike, Brandy brings her wisdom and experience to her new holiday album, Christmas With Brandy. A thoughtful, mixed gift bag, the album features Brandy singing original material and bringing new life to classic holiday standards. When she's not dazzling listeners with a crystalline cover, Brandy is diving deep into the R&B bag that made us fall in love with her from the very beginning.
Czarface – Czartificial Intelligence CD/LP/Cassette (Silver Age, LLC)
Immerse yourself in Czarface's latest action-packed odyssey, Czartificial Intelligence. Weaving together the unfiltered essence of OG braggadocio, introspective storytelling and high-flying superheroes, Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck, Esoteric and 7L create a dynamic synergy that's as engaging as flipping through the pages of your favorite graphic novel. Esteemed guests such as Logic, Nems, Kool Keith and Frankie Pulitzer join Czarface on missions and side-quests, bringing enough power to warp the space-rhyme continuum.
Flycatcher – Stunt 12” (Memory Music)
Pink vinyl. Formed in 2017, Flycatcher's ability to construct sing-a-long melodies and gut-punching instrumentation, while also tackling the dissonance of depression and difficult relationships, proves their power in casting an empathetic, universal eye. The New Jersey-based quartet’s new EP is all about finding and channeling a more authentic version of yourself, and all the vulnerability that comes with that kind of internal journey. Writing these songs helped the band try out different sounds and new tonal directions, channeling the energy of early- ‘00s indie, with the euphoria of pop and punk.
Peter Gabriel – i/o 2xCD/2xLP/2xCD+Blu-ray Audio (Real World)
i/o is Peter Gabriel’s first album of new material since 2002’s Up. During 2023, Peter has been releasing a new song from the album on the occasion of every full moon. Being revealed roughly every four weeks, each track has been allowed to find its own time and space, to enjoy its own orbit. “It’s a little like getting a Lego piece each month,” Peter explains. Now it’s time to stand back and admire the final, completed creation. And what a creation – 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful – often thought-provoking – songs tackle life and the universe. i/o is available in four editions: 2xCD (Bright Side Mix, Dark-Side Mix); 2xLP (Dark Die Mix); 2xLP (Bright Side Mix); and 2xCD+Blu-ray Audio (Bright-Side Mix, Dark-Side Mix, In-Side Mix). [A deluxe 4xLP+2xCD+Blu-ray box set edition is due March 8, 2024.]
Marina Herlop – Pripyat LP (PAN)
Barcelona-based artist Marina Herlop invites the listener to step into her otherworldly dreamscape and in turn go down a sonic rabbit hole into her garden of forking paths. Resisting attempts to interpret her work, Marina Herlop prefers to create open worlds which nourish and stimulate the imagination. Experimenting freely with konnakol syllables and Karnatic rhythms harnessing the processed human voice and electronics, Pripyat can be treated as a black box or Cenobitic toy which the listener can project their desires and dreams onto.
Khruangbin – Live At Sydney Opera House 2xLP (Dead Oceans)
Khruangbin's series of live LPs traces just one small slice of the band's flight plan through the years: it's a taste of some of their most beloved cities, stages and nights. Each release comes with a limited-edition unique album cover exclusive for the recording's home turf, just a little something extra for the fans that bring a little something extra. Across five releases, this series ignites both sides of Khruangbin's magic: the warm, prismatic feeling of their albums and the bewitching energy of their performances. Closing out this collection, Live At Sydney Opera House is a double LP of front-to-back Khruangbin.
Charlamagne Palestine – CHARRRLLEEMMMA GGGNEELANDDDDDS SS"""""" CCCRREATTO RRSSSSSCCCARILLON NNN"""""""" DINGGGDONGGGDINGGGzzzzzzz ferrrr SSSOFTTT DIVINI TIESSSSS!!!!!!!!! with STTT THOMASSS ''''"'"DINGG GDONGGGDINGGGzzz zzzz ferrrr TONYYY''''''''' LP (Blank Forms Editions)
Charlemagne Palestine's newest record pairs two energetic works for carillon bells. On side A, a new piece recorded at his studio in Belgium-a high-ceiling, stuffed animal paradise he calls Charleworld-among friends and divinities. On the flip side, Blank Forms Editions' very first and long out-of-print release appears on vinyl for the first time: a cathartic street recording of his 2018 musical eulogy for his late friend Tony Conrad, performed on the bells of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where the two first met. Two mesmerizing "klanggdedangggebannggg" sessions in the Quasimodo of 53rd Street's unmistakable improvisatory style.
Polygonia, Popp - Candid LP (Squama)
Roots run deep on Candid, the first collaborative LP from Munich-based producer Polygonia and drummer Simon Popp. The record is a perfect blend of their distinct voices, with Popp's drumset and his signature percussion sounds buzzing around Polygonia's bold and blooming productions. Composed of live material recorded at Munich's ZIRKA in late 2022 and over several studio sessions in-between touring duties, Candid is a meadow of herbal electronic music, mystic at times, but joyful nonetheless.
Lucy Railton - Corner Dancer LP (Modern Love)
Multi-instrumentalist Lucy Railton trusts in the nuance of her own creative instincts on an intensely modern, quietly radical new album, her second for Modern Love. Following her 2018 solo debut Paradise 94 and countless collaborations in the time since, Railton's diverse musical circles here bleed into each other, creating an insoluble testament to a lifelong pursuit of sound. Reaching outside tried and tested zones, she lands at a charged space characterized by unmetered pacing and an embrace of imperfection, using cello, viella (a medieval cello), Buchla, 808, a fan, synths, horse hair whips, a handheld harp and her own voice, across eight tracks that arc from an opening sequence of ruptured asymmetries, to something bordering the sublime on "Blush Study," the album's masterful closing flourish. In between, Railton invokes psychoacoustic, heady spins and repetitions, while also allowing space for live performance, a mode to which she feels most attuned, and here captured best on "Held in Paradise" (her violin debut) and "Rib Cage."
Zach Russell – Where The Flowers Meet The Dew CD/LP (Carlboro)
Once again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem The Artist), Where The Flowers Meet The Dew never takes its foot off the gas pedal. Dominant themes of wrestling with mortality, pondering reincarnation, and finding that ever-elusive feeling of contentment in this life weave gracefully through. The first half of the record is filled with traditional waltzes (“I Thought I Was the Trees”, “Take Me Back to Tennessee”), haunting electric folk (“What You Want Comes to You”), and ‘60s R&B style (“Milk & Honey”) cuts. It’s deep, mellow, and the lyrics are contemplative. It draws you in while not letting the listener get too comfortable. Greasy, distorted guitar licks pepper the back half of the album. “Playing House” fully displays his creative dexterity and would be right at home on a post-grunge rock radio station, circa 1998, sandwiched between Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind numbers. Later, on “Nothin’ To Haul”, he boldly calls out the posers and wannabes that fill the Nashville scene.
Salamanda - In Parallel LP (Wisdom Teeth)
Seoul duo Salamanda arrive on Wisdom Teeth with their latest and most focused LP yet: In Parallel -- a vividly textural and immersive record that brings a new level of clarity to their typically psychedelic, expansive approach. Since 2019 the pair have established a few key calling cards: mallet instruments and tuned drums carry playful music-box melodies, thick washes of gaseous ambience invoke otherworldly or ancient soundscapes, and buried fragments of found sound and manipulated vocal give their otherwise synthetic compositions a warm sense of first-person narrative. At times their sonic explorations lead them to embrace a more upfront approach to rhythm, skirting closer than ever before to the dancefloor in the process. In Parallel is a record about connection, and the warmth and nostalgic simplicity of friendship is felt vividly throughout.
Talk – Lord Of The Flies & Birds & Bees LP (Capitol)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Executively produced by hitmaker Justin Tranter, Lord Of The Flies & Birds & Bees showcase his diverse talents, ranging from emotional ballads to massive stadium anthems full of love and passion.
Hector Tellez Jr. – The Great Unknown CD/LP (Mono Mundo B)
Hector Tellez Jr. is a soulful big-voiced singer and virtuoso rock guitar-player from Havana, Cuba. Growing up in a musical family in Cuba, he listened to scratchy bootlegged cassettes and CDs leading him on a passionate and self-curated music journey of blues and classic rock 'n' roll. His cornerstone influences coalesced into Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Buckley, and Leonard Cohen. Today Hector lives in Nashville, Tennessee and writes and records music in both English and Spanish. The Great Unknown was produced by Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age, Stone Temple Pilots) and features Peter Buck of R.E.M. and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana.
Waterbaby - 22°Halo LP (Untitled (Records))
Martha and Jessica Kilpatrick (aka Waterbaby) had their creative upbringing in South London -- spending their days singing in Southwark Cathedral Choir or experimenting with recording ideas onto cassette tapes, such as trying to make their out-of-tune family piano and a flute sound like an electric guitar. Eventually settling together in an attic flat in Peckham, the sisters became quiet, mystical forces in the underground London scene, emerging from the sanctuary of their studio to perform their hypnotic live show with artists as varied as Kedr Livansky, James K, and Dorian Electra. The sisters' insular and feminine sonic world showcases inventive song structures backed by dizzying layers of production -- all crafted on their stash of lost and found analogue gear in their South East London studio, squashed between Hyperdub's headquarters and a mechanic's garage. In a world where the analogue and the digital seem to be in constant headlock, Waterbaby effortlessly solve the equation -- operating in a space where Cocteau Twins-esque anachronism and Kate Bush-inspired whimsical songwriting meets the sharper edge of contemporary experimental electronica.
Curtis Waters – Bad Son LP (Guin)
Limited blue vinyl pressing. Curtis Waters' album Bad Son is a powerful exploration of the immigrant experience and the pursuit of success and fame. With themes of self-acceptance and courage, the album delves into healing the deep-rooted trauma and self-hatred that can come from striving to succeed in a capitalist society. Moods and keywords include vulnerable, introspective, reflective, sentimental, rebellious with key tracks like "Bunny" and "Himbo" being more playful and flamboyant.

SZNZ: Winter is the tenth EP by American rock band Weezer, and the last of four EPs in their SZNZ (pronounced "seasons") project. Rivers Cuomo described the project's overall emotion as sadness. Restless and daring, his refusal to be constrained by genre, resulting in an endless string of top 10 hits, including "Splish Splash", "Queen Of The Hop", "Dream Lover", "Beyond The Sea", and "If I Were a Carpenter". In June 1968, Darin withdrew from the spotlight and embarked on an unlikely personal journey. Khanate – Khanate [Reissue/2001] 2xLP (Sacred Bones)
Khanate – Things Viral [Reissue/2003] LP (Sacred Bones)
Khanate's self-titled debut (2001) has all the pleasant ambiance of a plane crash site, a bleak urban waste of mangled and torn metal beams and hissed alarms. When Khanate first issued Instructions To The Void in 2001, the band was embraced as the next iteration of guitarist Stephen O'Malley's tube-cracking forays into amplifier variance; a fascinating further step of vocalist Alan Dubin and low-frequency shifter James Plotkin's space charts; and a warning for the crawling-pace hammers of Tim Wyskida's drums. Sensing that defenses to their contagion were down, Things Viral (2003) withdrew from any familiar or friendly shapes. On their second offering, the band decelerated to its own tempo, freezing the decay of the debut in a shocking and powerful stasis. [Limited-edition white vinyls.]

Double blue color vinyl pressing. Includes sticker. Twentysomething Dwight Yoakam was literally the new kid in country music when he stepped onto the Austin City Limits stage in October 1988. But even then, as he has ever since, he was doing things his own way. Dwight was born in a small Kentucky town and grew up listening to mountain and bluegrass music, and unlike most of the mainstream country-pop crooners of the eighties, he almost singlehandedly revived the rockabilly/honky tonk/hillbilly sound that was one of the cornerstones of country music's formative years.
