Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Paramore – This Is Why CD/LP/Cassette (Atlantic)
Paramore make their long-awaited return with This Is Why, their first new music in five years. "On the band's first release with Atlantic Records – after spending nearly two decades on Fueled By Ramen – Williams and company are tracking the emotional landscape of a post-lockdown world and attempting to provide some kind of semblance to what comes next," writes Flood Magazine. "The record's title track and lead single is a return to form and another instance of emo-slanting rock." "‘This Is Why' was the very last song we wrote for the album," Hayley Williams shares. "...It summarizes the plethora of ridiculous emotions, the rollercoaster of being alive in 2022, having survived even just the last three or four years. You'd think after a global pandemic of fucking biblical proportions and the impending doom of a dying planet, that humans would have found it deep within themselves to be kinder or more empathetic or something." [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing is available, as well as standard black vinyl.]
Yo La Tengo – This Stupid World CD/2xLP+MP3 (Matador)
This Stupid World serves as the most live-sounding Yo La Tengo album in years. Times have changed for the band as much as they have for everyone else. In the past, Yo La Tengo has often worked with outside producers and mixers. This Stupid World, their first full-length in five years, was created all by themselves. And their time-tested judgment is both sturdy enough to keep things to the band's high standards, and nimble enough to make things new. At the base of nearly every track is the trio playing all at once, giving everything a right-now feel. There's an immediacy to the music, as if the distance between the first pass and the final product has become more direct.
Andy Shauf – Norm CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)
Hailed as "a gifted storyteller" (NPR Music) for 2016's The Party and 2020's The Neon Skyline, Andy Shauf writes albums that unfold like short fiction, full of colorful characters, fine details and a rich emotional depth. With Norm, however, Shauf has slyly deconstructed and reshaped the style for which he's been celebrated, elevating his songwriting with intricate layers and perspectives, challenging himself to find a new direction. Under the guise of an intoxicating collection of jazz-inflected romantic ballads, his storytelling has become decidedly more oblique, hinting at ominous situations and dark motivations. [An indie store exclusive ‘eco mix’ color vinyl.]
Jill Barber – Homemaker CD/LP (Outside Music)
Jill Barber returns to her folk roots with her new album Homemaker, delivering ten quietly profound songs about the complexities of motherhood, marriage, and the struggle to feel at home in one’s own identity. [Indie store exclusive ‘blueberry pie’ color vinyl.]
Black Belt Eagle Scout – The Land, The Water, The Sky CD/LP+MP3 (Saddle Creek)
The Land, The Water, The Sky rises and falls, in darkness and in light, but even in its most melancholy moments it is never despairing. That is the beauty of returning home. When you stand on ancestral lands it is impossible to be alone. You feel the arms and hands that hold you up, unwilling to let you fall into sorrow or abandonment. In her songs Katherine Paul has channeled that feeling of being held. In every note she has written a love letter to indigenous strength and healing. There is a joy present here, a fierce blissfulness that comes with walking the trails along the river, feeling the sand and the stones beneath her feet. It is the pride and the certainty that comes with knowing her ancestors walked along the same land, dipped their hands into the water, and ran their fingertips along the same bark of cedar trees. This is a story of hope, as it details the joy of returning.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - The Future Is Your Past LP (A Recordings)
Clear 180 gram vinyl; includes six color pencils to color album cover.. Anton Newcombe -- frontman, songwriter, composer, studio owner, multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer, father, force of nature -- returns with the Brian Jonestown Massacre's 20th full-length studio album. After a hugely prolific 2010s that saw the release of eight long-players and one mini-album, Newcombe had been going through a period of writer's block when one day he picked up his 12-string guitar and "The Real" (the opening track on previous album Fire Doesn't Grow on Trees) came out of him. After that, the band tracked a song every day for 70 days and had two albums ready to go by the end. Joining Newcombe in the studio for The Future Is Your Past were Hakon Adalsteinsson (guitar) and Uri Rennert (drums).
Burial – Streetlands 12” (Huperdub)
Burial finishes 2022 with a follow up to Antidawn, the sublime three-track EP Streetlands. There is something out there...
Civic – Taken By Force CD/LP (ATO)
Melbourne-based five-piece Civic return with their visceral new full-length studio album Taken By Force. The LP was recorded in the Castlemaine countryside with Radio Birdman frontman Rob Younger producing and was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current, Sonny & the Sunsets). Taken By Force is Civic's follow up to their critically acclaimed 2021 debut full-length Future Forecast – an album of songs that showcased the band's frenetic, yet melodic sound coupled with introspective lyrics. Taken By Force picks up where their debut left off, seeing Civic joyfully obliterate the line between furious catharsis and unbridled fun. It's an album the band aptly sums up as "1984 meets Endless Summer." Civic has reimagined the reckless intensity of proto punk for an era of endless uncertainty to become one of the most exhilarating bands to emerge in recent years. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]
Delain – Dark Waters CD/2xLP (Napalm)
New album from the Dutch symphonic metal pioneers; a sonic rollercoaster ride of catchy tunes with explosive elements ranging from pop to film score stylings to blistering metal.
Sam Goku - The Things We See When We Look Closer LP (Permanent Vacation)
The second album from Chinese-German artist Robin Wang aka Sam Goku, releasing nearly two years after his debut East Dimensional Riddims, which combined traditional Asian instruments and field recordings with his own modern take on dance music that focuses on fluid rhythms, beautiful melodies and ambient haze. Here he further refines his unique approach to production - a deeply nature-rooted and aethereal sound from twinkling ambience over bright, bouncy kickdrums to shuffling breaks. Robin is hunting for the bigger picture by taking a closer look. Finding new life in the different microcosms and gaining new perspectives on things by switching the angle and developing a meditative and psychedelic swirl.
The Golden Dregs – On Grace & Dignity CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)
The beautiful third album by The Golden Dregs, On Grace & Dignity, starts with a scene of a man going on holiday in search of his "best self". In among the personal reflections on loss of innocence and inferiority, Benjamin spins subtly interweaving narratives about survival, desperate acts of violence, loss, and the limitations of community in the face of rapacious gentrification. Nevertheless, appropriate for an album about home, it is somewhere you'll want to spend a while. (Benjamin recorded it at his place – that's his sister Hannah on saxophone.) Life here proceeds at a graceful pace – the bass is sturdy, organs celestial, horns softly valedictory – grounded by Benjamin's deep voice, which seems to resonate from his feet as he delivers the sort of meticulously written lunar wisdom worthy of Lambchop's Kurt Wagner, or the tidy yet revelatory kōan’s of Silver Jews' David Berman.
Hanson – Red Green Blue LP (Three Car Garage)
2022 album from the sibling pop trio, now on vinyl. Red Green Blue brings together the band's three unique creative voices like never before with a third of the album written and produced by each brother (Taylor's Red, Isaac's Green and Zac's Blue).
Tim Hill – Giant LP+MP3 (Innovative Leisure)
Tim Hill's sophomore album, Giant, is the result of an upgraded approach to music following his "simple and honest attempt at a first record." Having driven down the 605 to Long Beach, and set up shop at Jonny Bell's Jazzcats Studio, Hill played all the instruments himself, except for two outside players - one for pedal steel and one for violin. The product is a record steeped in affection for artists like Randy Newman, Warren Zevon, and Neil Young, but reimagined through the lens of the modern cultural melting pot that Hill lives in.
Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley – Living In A Song CD/LP (Compass)
Featuring ten co-written tunes and focusing on a classic country sound, Living In A Song is an in-depth look at the wonderful interplay between two masters of their craft. On Living In A Song, Ickes and Hensley showcase their songwriting chops in a set of 12 songs, five of which they co-wrote with Grammy award-winning producer Brent Maher (The Judds, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson). [Limited edition gold vinyl.]
In Flames – Foregone CD/LP (Nuclear Blast)
Foregone, In Flames’ fourteenth studio album, combines the greatest aggressive, metallic, and melodic strengths of their landmark records with the seasoned songwriting of their postmodern era. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]
Kelela – Raven CD/2xLP+MP3 (Warp)
Raven is the long-anticipated sequel to Kelela's impeccable studio debut. Kelela emerges from the tides of her higher self's oceanic orbit with a fifteen-track, continuous play album exploring autonomy, belonging and self-renewal as healing. With all the sonic, visual, and physical sensualism that magnetized her early core fanbase, Kelela's new album finds her more certain and at ease with her creative fluidity's exceptionality, no matter how high or wide it's waves. [Limited-edition clear vinyl.]
Maps – Counter Melodies CD/LP+MP3 (Mute)
Mercury-nominated artist Maps, aka James Chapman, presents his fifth studio album, Counter Melodies. Maps' music has always embraced melancholia, but with Counter Melodies, Chapman was keen to produce something that was upbeat and uplifting, allowing him to journey far away from the dystopian news flow. The album is a new adventure through the familiar emotional terrain of the Maps sound, while also transporting you to more resolutely optimistic and hopeful places. [Limited-edition white vinyl.]
Brad Mehldau – Your Mother Should Know: Brad Mehldau Plays The Beatles CD/LP (Nonesuch)
This live solo album features the pianist and composer's interpretations of nine songs by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and one by George Harrison. Although other Beatles songs have long been staples of Mehldau's solo and trio shows, he had not previously recorded any of the tunes on Your Mother Should Know. The album ends with a David Bowie classic that draws a connection between The Beatles and pop songwriters who followed. Your Mother Should Know was recorded in September 2020 at Philharmonie de Paris.
Lisa O’Neill – All Of This Is Chance CD/LP (Rough Trade)
A raconteur in the truest sense of the word, every story starts somewhere, and O'Neill starts this extraordinary collection here on earth, on Irish soil, hands in the land. All Of This Is Chance is full of both orchestral masterpieces like the ambitious and cinematic "Old Note", inspired by the great Monaghan writer Patrick Kavanagh's prescient meditation on The Great Hunger as well as stirring meditations on nature, birds, berries, bees, and blood that ring out over a clacking banjo, dusting and devastating all those in its wake. All Of This Is Chance takes Lisa's inimitable voice to greater heights, or depths, depending on which way you look at it.
Pierce The Veil – Jaws Of Life CD/LP (Fearless)
The band Rolling Stone once described as "hyperactive, progressive post-hardcore," returns with album number five, full of fuzzy guitars, massive melodic hooks, and PTV's distinct emotional heart. The Jaws Of Life is Pierce The Veil at their most raw – crackling with urgency and immediacy. Never predictable, always engaging, Pierce The Veil continue to soar on the strength of highly potent energy, rich musicality, and a scrappy sense of authentic exuberant ambition that's frankly unrivaled.
Post Malone – Twelve Carat Toothache 2xLP (Republic)
Post Malone's fourth studio album, Twelve Carat Toothache, is his most intimate and personal opus to date. Throughout the 14 tracks, Post takes us with him on his trials with fame, giving a glimpse into the irony of seemingly having it all, but feeling like nothing all at the same time. In an interview with Billboard, Post explained he wants the new songs to "speak more to how I'm feeling at the moment: the ups and downs and the disarray and the bipolar aspect of being an artist in the mainstream." Two colorways are available: red w/ black and indie store exclusive yellow.
Narrow Head – Moments Of Clarity LP (Run For Cover)
Traversing the depths of massive, churning riffs, often distorted to the point of violence, bouncing, lock-grooved rhythms, and crystalline, gorgeously constructed hooks, the Houston-based outfit puts on a masterclass in the art of writing songs that match the pain, pleasure, and confusion of modern living. Each track on Moments Of Clarity is sentimental without being precious, heavy without unnecessary griminess, pop-forward without letting the listener off the hook easy: these songs ask for some form of hurt or desire to be paid back to them in return, some promise that the listener is putting equal skin put into the game.
Kelly Lee Owens – LP.8.2 12” (Smalltown Supersound)
White color vinyl pressing. Kelly Lee Owens returns with LP.8.2 - a compendium to her LP.8 album from 2022. Produced by Kelly herself and Lasse Marhaug (Jenny Hval). This mini album contains four tracks and 18 minutes of new Kelly Lee Owens music following the abstract industrial beauty of LP.8.
Quasi – Breaking The Balls Of History CD/LP+MP3 (Sup Pop)
Breaking The Balls of History is Quasi's tenth record, landing ten years after their last record, on February 10th. Three tens, which aligns with the thirty years they've played together. Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss have become Pacific Northwest icons, and Quasi has always felt so steadfast – their enduring friendship so generative, their energy infinite, each album more raucous and catchier and ferocious and funny than the last. Here are two artists at their prime, each a human library of musical knowledge and experience, entirely distinctive in their songcraft and sound. In Quasi-form, the band becomes alchemically even greater than the sum of its parts: Janet's galloping drums and Sam's punk symphonic Rocksichord and their intertwining vocals make something gigantic, anthemic. [Pink color vinyl ‘Loser Edition’.]
Amy Ray – If It All Goes South CD/LP (Daemen)
New release from the Indigo Girls member. On her tenth solo album, Amy Ray traverses the musical landscape, traveling from funky gospel to Gypsy folk to a hoedown shouter, and beyond.
Tennis – Pollen CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)
Pollen is the sixth album from the acclaimed indie-pop duo Tennis. "We wanted to write a big album," says Tennis' Alaina Moore. "Instead of choruses with universal themes, I wrote with a specificity that was new to me, narrowing in on the smallest details of our lives. It is about small things with big consequences: a particle, a moment, a choice. It is me in a fragile state; sometimes inhabited freely, sometimes reacted against. It is striving to remain in a moment without slipping into dread. It is about the way I can be undone by a very small thing." [Indie store exclusive green vinyl.]
Teri Gender Bender – State Of Fear 10” (Clouds Hill)
Teri Gender Bender – Saturn Sex 10” (Clouds Hill)
Primarily known for her exceptional performances as frontwoman and multi-instrumentalist of Mexican garage punk band Le Butcherettes, Teri Gender Bender has also contributed vocals on numerous records for Omar Rodríguez-López, as well as collaborating with musical luminaries such as Melvins and Iggy Pop - and is now going solo.

Bohren und Der Club Of Gore – Bohren For Beginners [Reissue/2016] 3xLP (Heavenly)
Since their formation just over 30 years ago, hardly any German band has managed to create such a unique musical cosmos as the German band Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore from Mühlheim. With their dark instrumental tracks, Bohren has been able to gain a leg-hold fan base in recent years, and renowned musicians such as Mike Patton (Faith No More), Ry-X, John Grant, Soap & Skin and Thor Harris (Swans) have long since fallen for Bohren's timeless songs. The wonderfully titled Bohren For Beginners now collects all the highlights of the Bohren catalogue in partly remixed versions, as well as a new song, for the first time as a three-LP album, so that the present work show is of interest as a gateway drug for newcomers as well as for diehard fans.
The Bronx – The Bronx (IV) [Reissue/2013] LP (ATO)

This 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is remastered with two bonus tracks, housed in a debossed jacket, and pressed on clear vinyl.
Cavetown – Lemon Boy [Reissue/2018] 12” (Cave Music LTD)
Green color vinyl pressing. At age 14, he started posting original songs and covers on YouTube alongside daily musings and behind-the-scenes vignettes, creating a barrier-free connection with his fans as they saw themselves in his music. His whole-hearted optimism and honest songwriting is reflected in effortless melodies about yearning to make sense of life.

Count Ossie is the central character in the development of Rastafarian roots music, nowadays an almost mythical and iconic figure. His importance in bringing Rastafarian music to a populist audience is matched only by Bob Marley's promotion of the faith internationally in the 1970s. [Limited-edition purple vinyl.]
Cymande – Cymande [Reissue/1972] LP (Partisan)
Limited translucent orange color vinyl pressing. With the release of their self-titled debut album in 1972, Cymande emerged as innovators of the black British music scene. Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band fused reggae bass lines, Afro-tinged Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic touches, and American-style funk into a unique sound they've since dubbed as "Nyah-rock".
Al di Meola – World Sinfonia [Reissue/1991] CD/2xLP (earMUSIC)
World Sinfonia was originally released in 1991 and was Al di Meola's first album with his World Sinfonia ensemble. On this exceptional album, he successfully combines his unpredictable and spontaneous guitar playing style with a predominantly analogue production. World Sinfonia is defined by introspection and thoughtful writing, enhanced by the unique artistic connection between Di Meola and Argentinian bandoneon player Dino Saluzzi. The influences on this record range from South American, Spanish and Middle Eastern elements to Argentinian Tango, which is most evident on the memorable “Last Tango For Astor”, an ode to Astor Piazzolla.

But the 63-minute magnum opus dedicated exclusively to the sacrament of marijuana is not just the pinnacle of the goofily named stoner metal genre... it's inarguably one of the most important and influential albums of all time.
