Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Styrofoam Winos - Styrofoam Winos LP (Sophomore Lounge)
Styrofoam Winos is composed of songwriters, multi-instrumentalists, and longtime friends Joe Kenkel, Trevor Nikrant, and Lou Turner. The Nashville-based group's self-titled debut studio album is both spacious and intimate, with moments raucously hard and feathery soft — a range that is as unpredictable as it is rare. Born of improvisation and written together, Styrofoam Winos emanates the warmth of collaboration. With no single ego at the helm, the Winos create a shared musical world through self-aware lyrics, which are occupied by stories, characters, and strange encounters with a styrofoam-and-wine society. The tales are narrated by Turner, Kenkel and Nikrant, as they effortlessly trade vocals from track to track, or within songs, Yo La Tengo-style. Engineered and mixed by Loney Hutchins (Lylas, Kurt Wagner) and mastered by Andrija Tokic (Josephine Foster, Alabama Shakes), Kenkel, Nikrant, and Turner tracked the album live, each leading a handful of songs and sharing backing band duties between guitars, bass and drums. While supplies last, copies of Styrofoam Winos are signed by the band and include a special Valentine zine (Valenzines!) exclusive to Grimey’s.
Thomas Bartlett - Shelter LP (Modern Recordings)
“Shelter” is a collection of eight disarmingly beautiful piano nocturnes from the composer and producer Thomas Bartlett (Sufjan Stevens, St. Vincent ) recorded over two days following lockdown in New York City. The mood on Shelter, Bartlett's first solo album, is one of dusk turning to inky evening blue. Lullabies for the heart, its pieces are multi-toned – from Xanthina, which seems to unspool before your ears, suggesting Cole Porter dreaming Satie, to the Ravel-esque Multiflora, which has the feel of water, shimmering, gurgling and tumbling. There are exquisitely deft melodic turns, as well as darker trills and runs. You may hear distant echoes here of some of Bartlett’s big musical loves: Keith Jarrett and late-era Talk Talk. What is so striking, besides the beauty of the compositions, is Barlett’s tender way with tone – informed in no small part by his time studying with celebrated Italian classical pianist Maria Curcio in London, as a teen. “The thing she prized, and what I feel I really learned from her, was how to invest in every tone,” says Bartlett, “especially the quiet ones.”
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - New Fragility LP (CYHSY)
What are we to make of the world? In many ways, the title New Fragility perfectly sums up our collective state of unease and anxiety, but it's particularly apt for singer songwriter Alec Ounsworth AKA Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and the trauma he's spent the best part of three years processing. "It's pretty personal, " says Ounsworth. "It's about what I think we're all experiencing at the moment, certainly here in the United States anyway - trying to move forward amidst an almost cruel uncertainty." Taken from the David Foster Wallace short story 'Forever Overheard', from the collection Brief Interviews With Hideous Men - "You have grown into a new fragility, " says the story's adolescent narrator - the title track documents what happens directly after a long relationship comes to an end, and what's discovered soon after. "There comes a period of making up for lost time in a changed world, " says Ounsworth, "and now is a time of predictable stupidity." "I never want to take another chance on anyone", Ounsworth laments over a steady chug of muted guitar chords, delicate piano, and bustling drums. "I can't believe the things I do to myself". It's a song that takes a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and doles out some uncomfortable truths. Yet it also showcases what Ounsworth has become so masterful at - couching a certain level of seriousness in something fun. Something danceable. Milky clear translucent vinyl. Includes download.
Claud - Super Monster LP (Saddest Factory)
When Claud Mintz's mother finally heard the 13 songs on her kid's magnetic first album, Super Monster, she asked a concerned question: Just how many people had her 21-year-old dated? From beginning to end, these sparkling pop tunes capture the assorted stages of a relationship's delight and dejection-the giddy sensation of a first kiss during the beaming "Overnight," the heartsick longing of a pending rejection during the yearning "Jordan," the reluctant call for a requisite breakup during the smoldering "Ana." Claud, though, replied that these songs detailed the phases of only two or three relationships, simply written during them or at various points after they were over. "I'd write about how I felt in the moment, then two months later, a year later. My perspective evolved on one relationship with the same person," Claud says. "I changed so much that it feels like a different person writing some of these songs-but it's just me." The debut release on Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory Records, Super Monster is a vertiginous but joyous coming-of-age reckoning with such young love. Claud sees relationships as games of endless wonder, intrigue, and second-guesses, a roller-coaster thrilling you even when it's terrifying. If "Gold" turns the tension and indecision of a bad match into an undeniable bit of lithe disco, "That's Mr. Bitch To You" uses a spurt of righteous indignation to fuse a little soul and emo into one breathless hook. Super Monster is like a compulsive compilation that Claud culled from a lifetime of musical enthusiasms-the arcing alt-rock of '90s airwaves, the rapturous pop of '00s chart-toppers, the diligent genre-hopping of modern online life. Claud emerges as the chameleonic mastermind of this mélange, channeling all of love's emotions into songs so sharp they make even the hardest times feel fun. Includes download.
Caithlin De Marrais - What Will You Do Then? LP (Skeletal Lightning)
Caithlin de Marrais' third album What Will You Do Then? is incandescent-a candle lit in memory of the moody midnight teenage bedrooms of the early 90's. Lustrous and sometimes deeply spare, What Will You Do Then? took form over the course of two and a half years, shaped by Rainer Maria guitarist Kaia F, with contributions from vocalists Annie Nero and Mark Duplass, multi-instrumentalists Lary Hoffman and Lucola Bang, drummer Stuart Gunter, MIDI programmer Emily Lee, and others. The songs were mastered by Adam Ayan, who put the finishing touches on Lana Del Rey's most recent records.
Django Django - Glowing In The Dark LP/CD (Because Music)
The fourth studio album by critically acclaimed Django Django, is about escapism & hope. Throughout their career, Django Django has consistently headed left where others have gone right. Produced by Dave MacLean, the 13 track LP represents the band's kaleidoscopic, genre-defying sound with a rejuvenated spirit, boldness & confidence. Indie exclusive glow in the dark vinyl pressing.
David Ferguson & Matt Sweeney - The Music of Red Dead Redemption 2: The Housebuilding EP LP (Lakeshore)
The Music of Red Dead Redemption 2: The Housebuilding EP is a special release featuring previously unreleased tracks from the blockbuster videogame including the fan-favorite "The Housebuilding Song," along with four additional yet to be released songs from the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 by David Ferguson and Matt Sweeney. Nashville’s David Ferguson grew up as the right-hand man for Johnny Cash and "Cowboy" Jack Clement and is known for his production work on Sturgill Simpson hit albums “A Sailor’s Guide To Earth” and “The Butcher Shoppe Sessions.” NYC’s Matt Sweeney is a guitarist, composer and producer whose work can be heard on albums by Johnny Cash, Adele, Run The Jewels, and Iggy Pop, along with his celebrated collaborations with Bonnie Prince Billy and Chavez.

Paul Leary - Born Stupid LP (Shimmy Disc/Joyful Noise)
First pressing on gratuitous red vinyl, limited to 1000. Paul Leary issued his debut solo album The History Of Dogs in 1991. And now, thirty years later he s releasing the follow up Born Stupid. Leary is best known as guitarist/vocalist for the infamous psychedelic noise rock band Butthole Surfers. Throughout the album Leary is joined by drummer Josh Freese, known for his work with a range of artists, including The Vandals, Guns N Roses, and Devo. It s important to note that Born Stupid will be the first release on the newly relaunched incarnation of Shimmy-Disc, the influential independent record label founded by producer/musician and underground music impresario Kramer in 1987.
Moe. - Not Normal LP (ATO)
Hailed by American Songwriter for their "mind-bending musicality," moe. is undoubtedly amongst our most vital and inspired bands, treasured for their mesmerizing musical synergy, expansive showmanship, and resonant songcraft. Since coming together in Buffalo, NY, the band has embarked on a truly original journey spanning three decades. Not Normal is a 5 song companion piece to This Is Not, We Are. Blue vinyl.
The Notwist - Vertigo Days 2xLP/CD (Morr Music)
The music of German outfit The Notwist has long been open-minded and exploratory, but their latest album offers up multiple new directions at once, from its engrossing structure, through its combination of melancholy pop, clangorous electronics, hypnotic krautrock, and driftwork ballads, to its international musical guests. There's something cinematic about Vertigo Days too, reflective of the group's time working on soundtracks. The album's lead single, "Ship", sees the group joined by Saya of Japanese pop duo Tenniscoats, her disarmingly hymnal voice sighing over a propulsive, krautrocking beat. American jazz clarinetist and composer Angel Bat Dawid adds clarinet to the spaced-out dream-pop of "Into The Ice Age", while Argentinian electronica songwriter Juana Molina gifts some gorgeous singing and electronics to "Al Sur." Vertigo Days is an album that is brimming with life, with enthusiasm and love for music and for community, all wide-eyed and dreaming.
Bobby Oroza - I Got Love b/w Loving Body 7-inch (Big Crown)
The Finnish crooner, Bobby Oroza, is back with a new set of tunes that pick up right where his glorious 2018 debut album, This Love, left off.The A side "I Got Love" is a sweet soul anthem for those with their priorities straight and an encouraging reminder to those who may have lost sight of what is truly important in life. The B side, "Loving Body", is as seductive as it is profound. Bobby proposi- tions his love interest over a gorgeous Cold Diamond & Mink production for more than a light hearted love affair.
Penelope's Fiance - The Cutting Edge of a Knife LP (Hypermedium)
Hailing from Stavroupoli, Thessaloniki, Penelope's Fiancé has created a unique sound that drifts across the borders of lo-fi, post-industrial, and fuzzy techno. The Cutting Edge Of A Knife is a solid display of his ability to craft emotionally intense tracks, merging a ghostly, gloomy grandeur with squelching percussive patterns. Cryptic atmospheres are molded from lethargic drones, scattered vocalisms, and sparse yet piercing beats; a panic-fueled rave epic brandishes an ecstatic, pummeling rhythm over trance-flavored melodic phrases and unnerving vocal samples. Opener "Lethe" emerges from the haze with its cryptic atmosphere, molded in lethargic drones, scattered vocalisms, and sparse yet piercing beats and rhythmic build-ups.
The Pretty Reckless - Death By Rock And Roll LP/CD (Fearless)
The Pretty Reckless' new album Death By Rock And Roll is their most ambitious release yet. It was written and completed through the heartbreaking losses of Chris Cornell, who was one of frontwoman Taylor Momsen's musical muses, and of longtime collaborator Kato Khandwala. The titular single became their fifth #1 at Active Rock Radio, a first for a female-fronted group. Features "25", "And So It Went" with Tom Morello, & "Only Love Can Save Me Now" with Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil.
Royal Green - Royal Green LP (Straight & Narrow)
Bryan Devendorf's solo curio project Royal Green exhibits a many-channels-open style of creation. Satellite signals, strange voices from lost television documentaries and radio operas are all woven into its fabric - like it’s using these endless tides of media and information to unlock the subconscious. Even its covers - Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, The National (with a nice big wink), The Beatles - are like stunning, albeit satanic takes on hymns, or like American standards almost dragged into the underworld. Like the best of Spacemen 3, Sparklehorse or massively underrated San Fran band Skygreen Leopards. It's the very edge of outsider pop songwriting.
Sia - Music: Songs From And Inspired By The Motion Picture CD (Atlantic Records)

Teenage Wrist - Earth Is A Black Hole LP (Epitaph)
The world may seem like a pretty strange place right now, but if nothing else that's forced us into realizing that being human is a shared experience. That sentiment lies at the core of Earth Is A Black Hole, the second full-length from the Los Angeles rock act Teenage Wrist. The album also marks the group's first release since the departure of former bassist/vocalist Kamtin Mohager last year and sees the duo of guitarist Marshall Gallagher stepping up as frontman, with longtime drummer Anthony Salazar backing him up in spectacular fashion. "As soon as we found out Kam was exiting, I just started writing," Gallagher explains. "I wanted to keep this band going and we didn't know exactly what that would look like, so I wrote two songs and demoed them myself to see if everyone was still on board." Those songs turned out to be the jangly power ballad "Yellowbelly" and spacey rocker "Wear U Down"-and with that, a new era of Teenage Wrist was born. While they are still influenced by bands like Swervedriver and My Bloody Valentine-most evidently on the swirling anthem "Silverspoon,"- Earth Is A Black Hole sees the band shifting their songwriting focus to a more modern sound that showcases the limitless potential of the band. Available on limited edition Crystal Clear color vinyl.
Tsunami Bomb - Still Standing 7" (Alternative Tentacles)
With their new 7-inch "Still Standing," Tsunami Bomb has returned with their unique sound of keyboard-driven, bombastic punk rock, with a dark edge and soaring vocals, that gives an incredible fresh spin on some classic tracks. Following up their emphatic return on the 2019 album The Spine That Binds, the band wanted to revisit two of their classic songs as a gift for their street team, The Bomb Squad, with the Irish jig driven “Irish Boys” and “El Diablo” (a song that was co-written by Oobliette who had sadly left the band by the time it was originally recorded.) Side B has two tracks exclusive to the vinyl, from a bootleg recording of the band in New York in 2018! The Tsunami Bomb live shows are notorious for being packed, sweaty sing-alongs, and that is very much on display here. On two of their most popular songs of all time, “Take The Reins” and “Lemonade,” the band is almost drowned out by the East Coast crowd who screams every word back at them. While the "Still Standing" 7-inch was supposed to be just for their street team, Jello Biafra caught wind of it and insisted it be released on Alternative Tentacles, allowing the world to hear this new classic. A good thing he did, because this EP proves once again that not only is Tsunami Bomb Still Standing, they are better than ever.

Your Old Droog - Dump Yod: Krutoy Edition CD (Mongoloid Banks)
Your Old Droog is back with the much-anticipated new album, Dump YOD: Krutoy Edition. Once again, the rap savant is putting his personal story at the forefront, going even further than the themes of his previous collection "Jewelry". "My last project was about unapologetically claiming my heritage as a Jew," explains Droog. "This one is about embracing my Ukrainian and Eastern European roots". Executive produced by Mach-Hommy and Tha God Fahim, the album features appearances from both of those artists along with El-P (Run The Jewels), Black Thought (The Roots), Phonte (Little Brother), and Billy Woods. Rooted in raw, minimalist production, "Dump YOD: Krutoy Edition" is a perfect showcase for Your Old Droog's transcendent lyrical skills and vivid storytelling, imbued with the Ukraine-born emcee's reflections on growing up as a Russian-speaking immigrant in Brooklyn. Due out 2/26/2021 on vinyl.

Karen Dalton - 1966 LP (Delmore Recording Society)
2021 repress on Clear Green Rocky Road colored vinyl. Karen Dalton was a remote, elusive creature who rarely sang in public or ventured into the unnatural setting of a recording studio, making only two studio albums in her lifetime. In 1966, Carl Baron brought his reel to reel over to her remote cabin in Summerville, Colorado and recorded her in the comfort of her home. Karen and Richard Tucker were rehearsing for a gig when Carl hit the “Record” button, and the result is a 45-year-old tape, carefully exhumed, documenting Karen at her most raw and unfiltered. On it are Fred Neil and Tim Hardin songs we’ve never heard Karen give voice to before, as well as traditional songs she uncannily makes her own, including a devastating version of ‘Katie Cruel’, that is so powerful, it is as if the ghost of Katie Cruel seeped into her blood.

Joe Henderson - Page One LP (Blue Note)
While Joe Henderson seemed to arrive fully formed on his auspicious 1963 debut Page One, the album was really a showcase for the transcendent collaboration between the tenor saxophonist and trumpeter Kenny Dorham who would form a potent frontline team on numerous classics. Opens with a pair of indelible Dorham compositions (Blue Bossa/La Mesha), the 6-song set penned by Henderson includes "Recorda-Me." This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is 180g all-analog, mastered from the original tapes.
His Name Is Alive - Hope Is A Candle LP (Disciples)
The third and final volume in a trilogy exploring the teenage tape experimentation of Warren Defever aka His Name Is Alive. The beautiful ambient sketches and backwards loops of the first two volumes are still in evidence, but this collection sees the artist moving slowly towards more recognisable song forms. Much of the material contained here was duplicated on the infamous demo tape that caught the ear of Ivo Watts-Russell and led to elements being re-worked into Livonia, the first His Name Is Alive album on 4AD. Having circulated in poor quality form as a bootleg for many years, it's a revelation to hear this music transferred from the original reels and remastered by Defever himself.

Tibor Szemző - Snapshot from the Island LP (Fodderbasis)
Originally released by Leo Records in 1987. Hungarian "minimalist" instrumentalist / composer Tibor Szemző's Snapshot From The Island is a wonderful excursion into ambient-electronic-acoustic dreamscapes, which could also be considered an offshoot of what many call the "minimalist movement". The title track is a 24-minute tone poem featuring Szemző performing on computer drums and flutes, providing a soft rhythmic undercurrent to balance the somewhat ethereal and delightfully hypnotic motif as he also electronically emulates bird and animal sounds which magnifies the mood or imagery of a faraway "Island" paradise. Szemző is a true artist, a painter with a fertile imagination, as he invites the listener into his introspective world of thoughts and dreams.
