Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Arooj Aftab / Vijay Iyer / Shahzad Ismaily – Love In Exile CD/LP (Verve)

Love In Exile asks you to step inside its sense of time, to stretch out alongside these delightful and unhurriedly unfolding songs. Profound impact is achieved with minimal instrumentation: Iyer on pianos and electronics, Ismaily on bass and Moog synth and Aftab's exquisite Urdu vocals. Subtle musical interrelationships build into moments of deeply felt drama. Shimmering keyboard melodies and stirring vocals, earthy basslines, and hypnotic drones: together they create an album of stunning gravitas and beauty.

Babymetal – The Other One CD/LP (Cooking Vinyl)

Last year Babymetal were "sealed" from the world after a successful 10-year journey. Earlier this year, The Other One restoration project began to recover the Babymetal we never knew existed within a virtual world called the Metalverse. The concept album reveals the other side of the Babymetal story that no one knew existed. A total of 10 songs have been discovered within The Other One restoration project, in which each song represents each theme of the 10 parallel worlds that seem to exist. [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

Bodikhuu – Tokyo LP (Mississippi)

Mongolian producer Bodikhuu takes a sonic journey through Japan in the form of 13 instrumental hip-hop vignettes. A rich collage of cast-off sounds and razor-sharp interpolations of city pop, obscure Japanese jazz, and ‘80s J-pop, all expertly chopped up on one of the few MPC-1000s in Ulaanbaatar.

The Bouncing Souls – Ten Stories High CD/LP (Pure Noise)

For over three decades The Bouncing Souls have been one of the most reliably joyful bands in punk rock, fostering an incredibly close kinship with their loyal listeners. Now on Ten Stories High, the band have taken this connection even further, creating an album of songs directly inspired by the stories of their fans. Ten Stories High finds The Bouncing Souls – vocalist Greg Attonito, guitarist Pete Steinkopf, bassist Bryan Kienlen, and drummer George Rebelo – making the best of the chaotic past couple of years. With touring on pause during the pandemic, the group turned to Patreon connect with their listener community, including a tier where fans could have a custom song written for them. The process would begin with the band having Zoom conversations with fans. [Indie store exclusive yellow w/ orange & black multicolor vinyl.]

Lucinda Chua – YIAN CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)

Conscious to hold space within her music for people to live inside, Chua thought often of YIAN's sound in terms of sonic spacing. The hushed, flickering tones of "Autumn Leaves Don't Come" and swelling strings of instrumental "Grief Piece" sound completely intimate, like she's singing into your ear, yet capacious, like soft cocoons of sound. "For me, the music is like a home," Chua explains. Cultivating a Chinese dance practice is as much part of the story of YIAN as the music itself. Chua returned to dance after struggling with the conservative constraints of ballet as a child, finding intuition and affirmation in the fluidity and naturalism of Chinese classical, fan & ribbon and contemporary. Dance is entwined in the very texture of YIAN, with Chua undertaking deep study of Chinese dance forms whilst working on the album. [Limited-edition clear vinyl.]

CVC – Get Real CD/LP (CVC Recordings)

CVC (or Church Village Collective in full) hail from this sleepy village 10 miles north of Cardiff, nestling atop a hill in the Welsh valleys. Their lush three-part harmonies echo the music they grew up on - contemporary pop's building blocks: the Beatles, Neil Young and the Beach Boys - rich, melodic, and pristine music that's steeped in rock's history. [Indie store exclusive gold vinyl.]

Kate Davis – Fish Bowl LP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Across Fish Bowl's 12 deeply personal tracks, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Kat Davis traces her very own hero's journey, from the moment she steps away from her old life to the moment she finds inner peace. She follows these steps through the eyes of Fish Bowl's central character, FiBo, who starts out on opening track "Monster Mash" realizing the community she cultivated has turned on her and starts to seek real change. Leading the entire creative process, Davis wove multiple genres - art-rock, pop, and folk - into an intricate, unique tapestry of sound. As she steps into an exciting new stage of her music career, Davis is taking the very meticulousness she developed from her years in the jazz world and applying them to Fish Bowl.

Lana Del Rey – Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Underneath Ocean Blvd CD/2xLP (IGA/UMG)

Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Underneath Ocean Blvd is the ninth studio album from acclaimed singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey, comprising 16 tracks and interludes with features from Father John Misty, Tommy Genesis, Jon Batiste, Bleachers and more. She introduced the album with the brooding and swelling title track which was written by Del Rey and Mike Hermosa and produced by Lana, Jack Antonoff, Drew Erickson, and Zach Dawes. It follows the prolific artist's 2021 albums Chemtrails Over The Country Club and Blue Banisters.

Depeche Mode – Memento Mori CD/2xLP (Columbia)

Memento Mori is Depeche Mode's fifteenth studio album and its first as the two-piece lineup of Dave Gahan and Martin Gore, following co-founder Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher's tragic passing in 2022. Produced by James Ford, with additional production work by Marta Salogni, Memento Mori's gestation took place during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, resulting in themes inspired directly by that period. The album's 12 tracks chart a vast expanse of moods and textures, from its ominous opening to its closing resolve – running the gamut from paranoia and obsession to catharsis and joy and hitting myriad points between.

Enslaved – Heimdal 2xLP (Nuclear Blast)

Recently released on CD – now available on viny. In true Enslaved fashion, the Bergen voyagers' 16th album, Heimdal, is both a departure and a communion with roots forged over three decades ago in the turbulent birth throes of Norway's black metal scene.

Fake Names – Expendables CD/LP+MP3 (Epitaph)

If credibility were currency, Fake Names' wealth would be off the charts. Composed of Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion, Dag Nasty), Michael Hampton (S.O.A., Embrace), Dennis Lyxzén (Refused, INVSN, The [International] Noise Conspiracy), Johnny Temple (Girls Against Boys, Soulside) and the newest member Brendan Canty (Fugazi, Rites Of Spring), the band is a veritable post-hardcore dream team. However instead of rehashing the past, Expendables is a reinvention that sees the band dialing back the distortion and leaning into the melodies. The result pairs their unparalleled pedigree with a pop sensibility that's slightly unexpected and wholly satisfying.

Fall Out Boy – So Much (For) Stardust CD/LP/Cassette (Fueled By Ramen/Elektra)

Grammy Award-nominated, multi-platinum selling rock band Fall Out Boy return with their eighth studio album, So Much (For) Stardust. It marks a homecoming for the band on multiple fronts; the first of which found the band reuniting with renowned producer Neal Avron, whom they've worked with on three previous albums (From Under The Cork Tree, Infinity On High, Folie à Deux). Additionally, So Much (For) Stardust is released on Fueled By Ramen/Elektra – Fall Out Boy's first album with the label since their 2003 debut album Take This To Your Grave, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2023. [Indie store exclusive coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Debby Friday – Good Luck CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)

The usual boom-and-bust cycles of growing up - breaking down, gathering the strength to get up, fumbling hard, doing it all over again - can feel unmooring, to say the least, but, and according to Debby Friday, its tragedies and glories need savoring. Losing illusions, gaining expectations; getting deep into the private, soupy kaleidoscope of what's possible and what's futile - Good Luck, her debut, and supernovic, full-length album, is built on welcoming the journey's complicated drops and mountain highs with something more like grace. On the album’s surface, you'll hear hints of Santigold's dub dazzle, the MIDI-crush of Death Grips, but less obviously the plaintiveness of directors like Eric Rohmer, or the grotesque decadence of later-era Sylvia Plath. Few do it like her, though, and Good Luck spans from lucid, acid housey, high-BPM tracks to melancholia and darkness to striking falsetto pop with assuredness and aplomb. [Metallic silver vinyl Loser Edition.]

Cody Fry – Symphonic CD/LP (Decca)

"If you've ever wanted a full album of only my orchestral music, this is your moment. Enjoy those lush strings, the fluttering woodwinds, and the bounteous, omnipotent French horns. If you're an orchestra nerd, you're my kind of person, and this album is for you. Or even if you're not, still buy one. We pressed a lot of them. I hope you love it as much as I love the key of Db major."

Andrew Gabbard – Cedar City Sweetheart LP (Karma Chief)

Andrew Gabbard (Buffalo Killers, The Gabbard Brothers, Thee Shams) releases his sophomore effort as a solo artist, Cedar City Sweetheart. The songs evoke a familiar feel for fans of his debut album, but new instrumentation and country-leaning lyrics give us a glimpse of another side of Andrew. "I love when a rock band makes a country album, " he explained, pointing to The Byrds as a major source of inspiration. Andrew played every instrument on his solo debut, Homemade. This time around, he called on some local musicians to add color. [Limited edition translucent yellow & red swirl vinyl.]

Iron & Wine – Lori 12” (Black Cricket)

Blue color vinyl pressing. Lori finds Iron & Wine's Sam Beam drawing from the songbook of noted singer-songwriter and multiple Grammy winner Lori McKenna. Recorded at the famed Sam Phillips Studios (Memphis, TN) with producer Matt Ross-Spang, Beam takes on four of his favorite McKenna tracks with help from Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, known collectively for their work in the indie-art-pop band Finom (formerly known as Ohmme.)

Darren Jessee – Central Bridge LP (Bar/None)

On Darren Jessee's third solo album, Central Bridge, he invites listeners into his unique artistic world, building the songs with humble instrumentation and plenty of open space to allow people to follow the threads within his plainspoken, yet elegiac lyrics. The nine tracks on Central Bridge are personal to Jessee, but rife with a universality that should resonate deeply within anyone.

Lankum – False Lankum CD/2xLP+MP3 (Rough Trade)

From the start, Dublin's Lankum planned for False Lankum, their fourth record, to feel like a complete piece – a progression and a journey for the listener. They explain, "we wanted to create more contrast on the record so the light parts would be almost spiritual and the dark parts would be incredibly dark, even horror inducing." The album's 12 tracks, composed of 10 traditional songs and two originals, show the four-piece using a new palate to color their sound in an increasingly experimental way, alongside longtime producer John ‘Spud' Murphy.

Mork – Dypet CD/LP (Peaceville)

Dypet sees Mork create a miasma of grim and frost-bitten riffs and harsh vocal melodies, marking the next logical evolution to come from the brilliant mind of Thomas Eriksen. The album simultaneously pushes new ideas forward yet still retains the signature foundations of ice cold hypnotic black metal.

Ne Obliviscaris – Exul CD/2xLP (Season Of Mist)

Exul personifies Ne Obliviscaris' distinctive, boundary-pushing ethos. The band's trademark blend of emotion and beauty is as towering as ever, if not even more compelling, particularly how the haunting violin lines carefully weave their way around the riffs. The duality of Charles' clean vocals and Xenoyr's growls remains the narrative anchor, elevating songs that emanate sophistication and are a masterclass in composition. [The limited-edition CD + Blu-ray mediabook edition includes a bonus live concert video.]

NewJeans – NewJeans 1st EP ‘New Jeans’ CDEP (Big Hit Entertainment)

New release from the five-member K-pop girl group. Includes sticker, photos, photocards, and poster.

Nickel Creek – Celebrants CD/2xLP (Repair/Thirty Tigers)

Grammy Award-winning trio, Nickel Creek – mandolinist Chris Thile, violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins – deliver Celebrants, their first new album in nine years. Their fifth studio album overall, Celebrants marks a highly anticipated return for the beloved trio and explores the inherent dynamics of human connection. Across the 18 tracks, the trio addresses love, friendship, and time with lyrics both poetic and plain-spoken, as they see bridges built, crossed, burned, and rebuilt. Recorded at Nashville's RCA Studio A, the album was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Valentine (Queens Of The Stone Age, Grace Potter, Weezer) and features Mike Elizondo on bass. [Indie store exclusive ‘confetti yellow’ vinyl.]

Ottto – Life is a Game LP (Org Music)

From the streets of Venice Beach CA, come Ottto, the electric eclectic funk-punk-rock stew who release their first full-length studio album Life Is A Game. Bassist Tye Trujillo, lead vocalist/guitar Bryan Noah Ferretti, and drummer Triko Chavez spill their aggressive groove centric vibe throughout the 10 tracks, Tim Harkins (Korn, Jerry Cantrell) produced album, as Ottto lead the charge on a full-tilt old school giant riff revival with pride and raw, unfettered passion. Double-stuffed with melody, Ottto throw it all down within a potent DIY punk attitude, infused with plenty of alternative chemical imbalance [Indie store exclusive green vinyl. All copies at Grimey’s are signed by the band!]

Ov Sulfur – The Burden Ov Faith CD/LP (Century Media)

OV Sulfur is the sound of a musical left-hand path that is nothing short of sonically jarring, lyrically blasphemous and utterly epic in its delivery. The Burden Ov Faith is blackened deathcore that challenges the genre's conventions, while inviting comparisons to Dimmu Borgir or Behemoth in their prime, with an ominous sense of melody dotting their dark musical landscapes. At the center of it, ex-Suffokate vocalist Ricky Hoover reemerges as a force to contend with, condemning the trappings of conservative religiosity on tracks like the album's volcanic opener, “Stained In Rot” or the unforgettable “Death Ov Circumstance”. [Limited-edition silver vinyl.]

Carly Pearce – 29: Written In Stone (Live From Music City) CD (Big Machine)

2021 CMA Female Vocalist and 2022 ACM Awards Female Artist of the Year, Carly Pearce has come a long way from the pain she felt writing 29. Filled only with happy tears, she looks ahead chronicling her critically acclaimed and commercially lauded album with 29: Written In Stone (Live From Music City). The set includes special guests Lee Brice, Ashley McBryde, The Isaacs, Matthew West, and Jenee Fleenor. [A gold color vinyl pressing is due April 28.]

Caroline Rose – The Art Of Forgetting CD/2xLP/Cassette (New West)

With The Art of Forgetting, Caroline Rose took on the dual role of writer and producer. The album encapsulates the feeling of experiencing recent memories, having them turn into old ones and then ultimately forgetting those memories altogether. There is a romantic nature within the sonic landscape of this record. Tape effects and loops emulate the feeling of aging while the juxtaposition of modern acoustic-electronic textures, like lo-fi tape next to hi-fi granular synths result in some of their most mature and honest work to date. [Two vinyl versions are available: standard green vinyl and deluxe 45rpm audiophile clear with lenticular cover.]

Zack Rosen – Syzygy LP (Chimera Music)

Zach Golub Rosen was an exceptional acoustic and electric bass player credited on more than a dozen albums. His songwriting was largely unknown outside a small circle of friends and family. He played about ten Syzygy gigs in small NYC venues, sometimes solo, sometimes with a band that included his friend Connor Grant on guitar. Connor is also a guitarist in Sean Ono Lennon's band, The GOASTT. In 2018, Zack approached Connor about producing his Syzygy project. They were deep into that project at the time of Zack's death, by suicide in 2019, at the age of 30, leaving the record to be finished posthumously. Throughout that process, as Connor combed through Zack's home bedroom recordings, many more songs were unearthed that no one had heard but Zack. "A truly brilliant artist. Zack's songs are astonishing and original. He had a peculiar, poetic, and playful mind." – Sean Ono Lennon

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross – Mank (Original Musical Score) 3xLP (UMe)

The critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated score for David Fincher's 2020 film, Mank, from Academy Award-winners Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Featuring 90 minutes of new compositions in the style of orchestral, big band, and foxtrot music of the 1940s.

Cécile McLorin Salvant – Mélusine CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Mélusine features a mix of five originals and interpretations of nine songs, dating as far back as the twelfth century, mostly sung in French along with Occitan, English, and Haitian Kreyòl. Mélusine follows last year's label debut, Ghost Song, which has received two Grammy nominations and tremendous critical praise, including spots on best albums of 2022 lists from the New York Times and NPR, among others. [Vinyl due 5/19.]

The Scarlet Goodbye – Hope’s Eternal CD/LP (Label Group)

The Scarlet Goodbye (labelled "the most unlikely mash-up in Minnesota music history") is the creative combination of Daniel Murphy (Soul Asylum, Golden Smog) and Jeff Arundel. Murphy had stepped away in 2012 after 30 years of recording and touring. A chance meeting with the mellow singer/songwriter Arundel led the duo to start writing and recording together. The result is their full-length album, Hope's Eternal.

Star Funeral – In The Dark LP (County Your Lucky Stars)

Star Funeral is the full-band solo project of Nikki Esposito. Stepping into the spotlight from behind the bass in Secret Tapes, Esposito adds guitar and lead vocals to her list of duties while drums are handled by Ethan Kreidemaker. Sonically, Star Funeral walks a fine line between pleasant and somber tones- dreamy guitars splash through plodding bass and drums with Esposito's vocals driving them forward through a flurry of aching longing and regret. This is indie rock at its finest. [Limited edition silver vinyl.]

Sweet Pill – Where The Heart Is LP+MP3 (Topshelf)

2022 release. 180gm red color vinyl pressing. Philadelphia's Sweet Pill write eruptive emo songs that embrace the edges of pop and hardcore. The result is an amalgam of complex song structures and flourishes of technical acumen, wholly unconcerned with genre, yet evoking the specific styles of touchstones such as Paramore and Circa Survive.

Stephen Ulrich – Music From This American Life LP (Barbes)

In 2020, Ira Glass' Pulitzer Prize-winning radio program This American Life commissioned ten pieces from composer Stephen Ulrich to convey the yearning, intrigue, and beauty of the show that has become the benchmark of modern oral storytelling. Unsettling and humorous, shadowy and optimistic, Ulrich's music weaves a melodic and textural foundation through many episodes of the iconic program. Ulrich, best known for his guitar noir trio Big Lazy as well scores to the HBO series Bored To Death and the Emmy-nominated documentary Art And Craft has made a career of composing music for picture. With a fluid economy and cinematic scale, Music From This American Life tells its own tales in a distinctly American vernacular.

The Baseball Project – Volume 1: Frozen Ropes And Dying Quails [Reissue/2008] LP (Yep Roc)
The Baseball Project – Volume 2: High And Inside [Reissue/2011] LP (Yep Roc)
The Baseball Project – 3rd [Reissue/2014] 2xLP (Yep Roc)

Color vinyl reissues. Rock n' roll vets Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows) and Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate, Gutterball, Danny & Dusty, Miracle 3) have an unhealthy love for music undermined only by an even more unhealthy love of baseball. The compatriots blend their two passions with The Baseball Project Volume 1: Frozen Ropes And Dying Quails. Their second season finds band members Steve Wynn (The Miracle 3, The Dream Syndicate), Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M.), Linda Pitmon (The Miracle 3, Golden Smog) and Peter Buck (R.E.M.) drilling down even deeper into the Byzantine, lore-laden annals of baseball history. 2014’s 3rd continues their tradition of inspired rock songs that provide passionately funny and sarcastically reverent commentary on the sport of baseball. And those who aren't fans of the sport can still enjoy the music, while brushing up on their knowledge.

The Free Music & Najib Alhoush - Free Music (Part 1) CD/LP (Habibi Funk)

Avid Habibi Funk listeners may be familiar with Libyan composer / producer Najib Alhoush, whose track “Ya Aen Daly” (a cover of the Bee Gee’s “Stayin Alive”) was included in the label's second compilation. Upon further research, it was discovered that Najib was actually the singer and founder of The Free Music band alongside Fakhreddin, Salim Jibreel, Abdulrazzak ‘Kit-Kat’, Mukhtar Wanis and Mohameed Al Rakibi. While many Habibi Funk releases feature bands that experimented with influences from Soul, Jazz, Funk, or Disco on just a single track or two, The Free Music's releases were always fully dedicated to their unique blend of Disco, Reggae and Funk. From the outset of lead single "Ana Qalbi Ehtar," the rhythmic strumming of the funkified guitars give way to the galloping drums and bass, opening up to anthemic vocals and rounding out with a blistering guitar solo, a certified disco-funk classic through-and-through. Album focus track “Men Awel Marra” is another standout disco-infused tune, showcasing the immense creativity of Najib and The Free Music.

His international breakthrough came in 1974 with the hugely popular 1000 Volts Of Holt album, which fused raw reggae rhythms with sophisticated orchestral arrangements. The highlight of the long player was a reworking of Kris Kristoffersson's country hit, “Help Me Make It Through The Night”, which the following year became a global hit. Over the years that followed, Holt remained a giant of the reggae scene with further best sellers and numerous sell-out shows around the world. The very best of his solo work has been brought together on this Essential Artist compilation.

Unearth – The Stings Of Conscience LP (Good Fight Music)

Limited blue, white, and yellow multi color vinyl pressing of the debut album by the Massachusetts metalcore band.

Sharon Van Etten – Tramp [Reissue/2012] LP (Jagjaguwar)

‘Crimson splash’ color vinyl pressing of the third album from the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter. The shimmering sound of Sharon Van Etten's 2012 Jagjaguwar debut album, Tramp, both defies and illuminates the unsteadiness of a life in flux. Throughout the 14 months of scattered recording sessions, Van Etten was without a home -- crashing with friends and storing her possessions between varied locations. The only constant in Van Etten's life during this time was spent in Aaron Dessner's garage studio. Tramp contains as much striking rock (the precise venom of "Serpents", the overwhelming power of "Ask"), as pious, minimal beauty (the earnest solemnity of "All I Can", the breathtaking "Kevins", "Joke Or A Lie"); it can be as emotionally combative ("Give Out") as it can sultry ("Magic Chords"). Contributions from Matt Barrick (Walkmen), Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), Zach Condon (Beirut), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak), Julianna Barwick, and Dessner himself add a glowing sheen to the already substantial offering.

The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die – Thank You For Being Here LP+MP3 (Epitaph)

Thank You For Being Here is a live album by The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die and is a companion piece to a feature length documentary film of the same name. After multiple delays, the seven-piece band from Connecticut set out on the road in Fall 2021 for a five-week tour to support their critically acclaimed album, Illusory Walls. They brought with them a documentary filmmaker and audio engineer to capture the adventures. This collection of song features fan favorites from the band's catalog along with a deep dive into their then-latest studio album.
