Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Abraham Alexander – Sea / Sons LP (Dualtone Music Group)
Singer-songwriter Abraham Alexander's highly anticipated debut album. Features guest appearances from Mavis Staples and Gary Clark, Jr. Includes the single “Tears Run Dry”.
Darling West – Cosmos LP (Jansen)
Darling West decamped for a tiny island on Norway's west coast to begin writing what was to become Cosmos, their fifth studio album. For the first time, the band's core - married couple Mari and Tor Egil Kreken - have included band members Thomas Gallatin and Christer Slaaen in the songwriting and production process. As a larger united, Darling West has really evolved. Cosmos is indeed the sound of expansion. West coast, cosmic folk, Americana... Call it what you will - there are even hints of Afro blues on here - but where the band once fit firmly in the folk/Americana category, you might as well just call it pop these days.
Brian Dunne – Loser On The Ropes CD/LP (Kill Rock Stars)
Recorded in Athens, GA, with producer Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, Of Montreal), Loser On The Ropes explores defeat and denial, fortune and faith, shame and redemption, all set against the backdrop of a world run by blowhards and bullshitters who manage to perpetually skate by without cost or consequence. Dunne may be a singer/songwriter in the purely technical sense of the term, but he shares more in common on this album with the punks and new wave weirdos who turned up in lower Manhattan and the outer boroughs in the '70s and '80s, DIY misfits who came to crash the party and ended up building their own scene instead. That's not to say Loser On The Ropes is a punk album-in fact, it might be the most beautiful and melodic record Dunne's ever made-but rather that the songs are lean and gritty, sick of mincing words and insistent on cutting straight to the heart of things with a raw, understated poeticism. [Limited-edition coral color vinyl.]
El Michels Affair & Black Thought – Glorious Game CD/LP (Big Crown)
Glorious Game a remarkable debut partnership in more ways than one. Michels provides his bottom-heavy, soul-tinged production for Black Thought who gives us some of the more personal and transparent verses we've ever heard from him. [Limited-edition ‘sky high’ blue vinyl.]
Caleb Elliott – Weed, Wine & Time LP (Single Lock)
Like the sprawling branches of a tenured Magnolia, Caleb Elliott's sophomore album Weed, Wine & Time is beauty and grit personified. From the first track of the record, Elliott lays bare a thesis of hope and healing that continues throughout the album's entirety. Elliott's opening chorus states that, "You learn as you go along, simple as a song," and this theme courses like blood through each of the 11 tracks that follow. The result is genre defiant grandeur that traces Elliott's personal growth over the years of his life. There are veins of JJ Cale country, the soul-jazz of Michael Kiwanuka, and the lyric fragility of Sufjan Stevens crisscrossing throughout the album.
Feist – Multitudes CD/LP (Interscope)
Multitudes serves as the 11-time Juno Award-winning artist's sixth full-length album and first release since 2017's critically acclaimed Pleasure. The 12-track collection took shape soon after the birth of Feist's daughter and the sudden death of her father, a back-to-back convergence of life-altering events that left the Canadian singer/songwriter with "Nothing performative in me anymore." Amid meditations on mortality, connection and the frenetic state of the human condition, Multitudes ultimately radiates an ineffable sense of hope. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]
Dom Flemons – Traveling Wildfire LP (Smithsonian Folkways)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Dom Flemons has built a reputation on presenting 100 years of American roots music, but now, with Traveling Wildfire, his own songwriting prowess comes into the spotlight. Carefully selected from his personal repertoire, these original songs reveal his love of country, western, blues, Americana, bluegrass and folk music as they tell of true love, family legacy, survival, time travel, and the juxtaposition between light and dark. Traveling Wildfire weaves through the themes of hope and humor as it rises above the hard times with strength and lightheartedness.
Fruit Bats – A River Running To Your Heart CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
Fruit Bats has often showcased love songs where people and locations meld into one. It's a loose song structure that navigates what Eric D. Johnson calls "the geography of the heart." Those pathways extend straight through the newest Fruit Bats album, aptly titled A River Running To Your Heart. Self-produced by Johnson – a first for Fruit Bats – with Jeremy Harris at Panoramic House just north of San Francisco, it's Fruit Bats' tenth full-length release. After two decades of making music, hard-earned emotional maturity has clearly seeped into Johnson's already inviting songs. [Indie store exclusive blue w/ cream color vinyl.]
Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru – Jerusalem LP (Mississippi)

Jesus Piece – …So Unknown CD/LP (Century Media)
Seven years into a career built on an uncompromising ethos and carefully crafted, brutal sounds, Jesus Piece melds intelligence and aggression in a manner that doesn't just push the genre's rigid boundaries. It sets the standard for the shape of hardcore to come.... So Unknown is the sound of articulated brutality that defies categorization. It's 28 minutes of rage and introspection slammed into the red. From explosive opener “In Constraints” to the dissonant strains of “Tunnel Vision” to the caustic “An Offering To The Night”, Jesus Piece's first full-length since 2018's Only Self has been worth the wait. Co-produced and mixed by Randy LeBouef (Every Time I Die, Orthodox), ...So Unknown is a spectacular second act and a passage to something more intense and personal for the five Pennsylvania natives. [A limited-edition clear vinyl pressing is available for special order.]

Fenne Lily – Big Picture CD/LP/Cassette (Dead Oceans)
From the first line to the last, Big Picture finds Fenne seeking clarity in the uncertain; comfort in the uncomfortable. A gorgeous and gripping portrait of Fenne's last two years, Big Picture was rarely easy for its author to produce but its contents offer a brilliant catharsis. Started haltingly after a period of writer's block, the songs that would make up her latest work were pieced together over the course of the pandemic, in an effort to self-soothe. [Limited-edition ultramarine color vinyl.]

Metallica returns with its long-awaited twelfth studio album 72 Seasons. Speaking on the concept of the album title, James said, "72 seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are' by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry." [Indie store exclusive ‘midnight violet’ vinyl pressing is available.]
Mike Miz – Only Human LP (Blackbird)
After years as a regular fixture on the Northeast jam scene, Mike Miz found just what he was seeking, when he moved to Nashville three years ago, in pursuit of the highest level of song-craft and guitar playing. Hailing from Northeast Pennsylvania, Mike spent the better part of the last decade playing festivals, clubs, and songwriter joints from Philadelphia to Asbury Park to NYC. His new album, Only Human, is a songwriter's champion and an audiophile's delight. At times desperate and dark, Only Human is true to its title, proving through its mere existence that hope can persist, and that our struggles and setbacks are part, but not the whole, of our story.
Angel Olsen – Forever Means 12” (Jagjaguwar)
Last year's Big Time brought Angel Olsen to a deeper, truer sense of self than ever before. Borne from the twin stars of grief and love, the album delivered beautiful sense of certainty, the sure-footed sound of an artist fully, finally at home with herself. But within that wisdom comes the realization that there is no finish line, no destination or static end point to life while you're living it, and Forever Means collects songs from the Big Time sessions that hold this common theme. They are, in Olsen's words, "in search of something else." [A limited-edition pink colorway is available.]

Poison Ruïn – Harvest CD/LP (Relapse)
Poison Ruïn – Poison Ruïn [Reissue/2020] CD/LP (Relapse)
Evoking a rich tapestry of ice-caked forests, peasant revolts, and silent knights, Poison Ruïn stab at the pulsing heart of what it means to live under the permanent midnight of contemporary life. With Harvest, the band aligns their sonic palette to their godless, medieval-inflected aesthetic symbolism, creating a record which strikes with an assured sense of blackened harmony. With Harvest, Poison Ruïn has constructed a richly chilling fable out of modern living. Their tale is as lurid as it is seductive, as much a promising fantasy as it is a dreary portrait of reality itself. [Also available this week: CD and vinyl reissues of the band’s eponymous debut album; a killer blend of punk, post-punk and dungeon synth.]
Caitlyn Smith – High & Low CD/2xLP (Monument)

The Tallest Man On Earth – Henry St. CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)
Kristian Matsson returns as The Tallest Man On Earth with Henry St., his sixth studio album following 2012's There's No Leaving Now, 2015's Dark Bird Is A Home, and the self-released I Love You, It's A Fever Dream in 2019. Henry St. notably marks the first time he recorded an album in a band setting. "My entire career I've been a DIY person – mostly fueled by the feeling that I didn't know what I was doing, so I'd just do everything myself," he explains. But now, longing for the energy that's only released when creating together with others, Matsson invited his friends to come and play. Nick Sanborn (of Sylvan Esso) produced Henry St., which includes contributions from Ryan Gustafson (of The Dead Tongues) on guitar, lap steel and ukulele, TJ Maiani on drums, CJ Camerieri (of Bon Iver) on trumpet and French horn, Phil Cook on piano and organ, Rob Moose (of Bon Iver, yMusic) on strings and Adam Schatz on saxophone. An overarching theme of Henry St., he says, is "how to be a person in this world." [Indie store exclusive translucent red vinyl.]
Temples – Exotico CD/2xLP (ATO)
Produced by Sean Ono Lennon and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Beach House, Spoon, The Flaming Lips), Temples fourth full-length album Exotico takes place on an impossibly utopic island dreamed up by the four band members. With its resplendent collage of psychedelia, krautrock, and time-bending dream-pop, Exotico brings that world to life in crystalline detail, all while exploring an entire spectrum of existential themes: impermanence, mortality, our connection with nature and the wild immensity of the mind. [Indie store exclusive pink vinyl.]
Waterparks – Intellectual Property CD/LP (Fueled By Ramen)
Pop/rock three-piece Waterparks deliver their much-anticipated fifth full-length studio album Intellectual Property. The band steps into an elevated sound and enhanced aesthetic here introduced by a string of high-energy tracks including lead single "Funeral Grey", the incendiary "Fuck About It" (feat. blackbear) and the confessional, diaristic "Self-Sabotage". In an interview with Kerrang!, frontman Awsten Knight revealed, "I think that it does everything that Waterparks does best, and it expands. There are pieces that feel like they could have been on any other albums, but then there's elements of it that full-on expand past anywhere we've been before. I think there's a perfect balance between the poetry that you'd find on [2018 album] Entertainment versus the blunt crazy shit that you'd find on Fandom. It's a perfect melding of all of it."
The Wood Brothers – Heart Is The Hero CD/LP (Honey Jar/Thirty Tigers)
The Wood Brothers have learned to trust their hearts. For the better part of two decades, they've cemented their reputation as freethinking songwriters, road warriors, and community builders, creating a catalog of diverse music and a loyal audience who've grown alongside them through the years. That evolution continues with Heart is the Hero, the band's eighth studio album. Recorded analog to 16-track tape, this latest effort finds its three creators embracing the chemistry of their acclaimed live shows by capturing their performances in real-time direct from the studio floor with nary a computer in sight. An acoustic-driven album that electrifies, Heart is the Hero is stocked with songs that target not only the heart, but the head and hips, too.
