Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Tunde Adebimpe - Thee Black Boltz CD/LP (Sub Pop)

For the last 24 years, Tunde Adebimpe has largely been known as the co-founder, co-vocalist and principal songwriter for TV On The Radio. The mostly-black art-rock band triumphed through two decades of volatile cultural change to become one of the most beloved, enduring and influential groups from New York City's early-2000s rock scene. Though Tunde's poetic songwriting and towering vocals are central to TV On The Radio, the band will always be a collaboration between a group of musicians. Thee Black Boltz is not a TV On The Radio album. But the excitement of doing something on his own ignited a similar spark in Tunde as the early TV On The Radio days. The songwriting process is the same, but without his TVOTR bandmates Tunde "didn't have that scaffolding to hang on. That was both terrifying and exhilarating." At the heart of the album is it's title, a nod to Tunde's propensity to write and sing about the human condition, in all it's forms, under all it's stressors, both big and small. It is his response to the macro unease of a post-pandemic world careening towards violent authoritarianism and the personal grief that has come from loss in recent years, specifically the sudden passing of his younger sister while making this album. [Limited edition clear with black & white vinyl.]

Bad Nerves - Still Nervous LP (Loosegroove)

The bastard child of a Ramones/Strokes one night stand, Bad Nerves play ferociously fast distorted pop songs and drew acclaim with their previous releases 'Dreaming', 'Baby Drummer', & 'Can't Be Mine'. It would appear to be in the DNA of rock music, particularly punk music, that the music itself happens by some kind of happy accident. Nothing truer could be said of the Essex five piece speed punk band. [Indie store exclusive black & red vinyl.]

Julien Baker & TORRES - Send a Prayer My Way CD/LP (Matador)

Julien Baker & Torres' 'Send A Prayer My Way' was written and sung in the best of the outlaw tradition-defiant, subversive, working class, and determined to wrestle not only with addiction, regret and bad decisions, but also with oppressive systems of power. Mercifully, this is only the beginning of the stories TORRES and Baker are determined to tell. Because these are also songs about radical empathy and second chances, and third chances, and while there's plenty of struggle and regret in here, there's also humor and defiance.

Sam Barber - Restless Mind 2xLP (Atlantic)

Now that Sam Barber has your attention, he's looking forward to holding onto it a while. "I love making anything that can affect someone emotionally," Barber says. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter from Southeast Missouri has already seen his career begin on a meteoric rise, and his debut album, Restless Mind, is set to send him into orbit. Barber combines raw honesty and youthful enthusiasm in a way that has forced him into nearly every conversation about the future of country music.

Dead Meadow - Voyager To Voyager LP (Heavy Psych Sounds)

Dead Meadow has reached a defining milestone in their 26-year career with their highly anticipated tenth studio album, Voyager to Voyager. Since emerging in the late ’90s as trailblazers of the heavy psych-rock scene, the band has continually expanded the boundaries of their sound. This latest release cements their legacy and serves as a heartfelt tribute to their late bassist and creative brother, Steve Kille, whose untimely passing in 2024, marked the poignant close of a chapter in their storied history.

Rhiannon Giddens & Justin Robinson - What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Rhiannon Giddens reunites with her former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmate Justin Robinson on What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, an album of North Carolina fiddle and banjo music. Produced by Giddens and Joseph "joebass" DeJarnette, the album features Giddens on banjo and Robinson on fiddle, with the duo playing eighteen of their favorite North Carolina tunes: a mix of instrumentals and tunes with words. Many were learned from their late mentor, the legendary North Carolina Piedmont musician Joe Thompson; one is from another musical hero, the late Etta Baker, from whom they also learned by listening to recordings of her playing. Giddens and Robinson recorded outdoors at Thompson's and Baker's North Carolina homes, as well as the former plantation Mill Prong House. They were accompanied by the sounds of nature, including two different broods of cicadas, which had not emerged simultaneously since 1803, creating a true once-in-a-lifetime soundscape.

Little Barrie & Malcolm Catto - Electric War CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)

Electric War is an electrifying collaboration between British power trio, Little Barrie (Barrie Cadogan and Lewis Wharton, who wrote and performed the theme to Better Call Saul) and acclaimed producer/drummer, Malcolm Catto, fusing unique talents into a mesmerizing exploration of raw, experimental sound. Electric War delivers a blend of sharp guitar lines, thunderous drums, and swirling textures that evoke a post-apocalyptic soundscape teetering between chaos and harmony.

Melvins - Thunderball CD/LP (Ipecac)

The new 2025 album featuring the 1983 lineup of Buzz & Mike Dillard. Plus special guests Void Manes and Ni Maitres. Formed over 40 years ago in Seattle, Melvins were one of the pioneers of the grunge and sludge metal scenes. [Indie store exclusive ‘smoke is a color’ vinyl.]

Taylor Rae - The Void CD/LP (Missing Piece)

With her second release, The Void, she takes her eyes off the road and turns her attention inward instead. Produced by Grammy winner Eric Krasno, The Void celebrates the contradictory and complementary parts of the human experience, exploring life's dark corners — from breakups to intergenerational trauma — with a colorful mix of roadhouse roots-rock, modern-day folk, alternative music, blues, and analog Americana.

Lucy Railton - Blue Veil LP (BWSCD)

The first release to document the solo cello work of musician and composer Lucy Railton, the 40-minute composition Blue Veil recorded at Église du Saint-Esprit in Paris invites listeners into the realm of precision-tuned states of resonance: states made manifest through Railton's careful traversal of her cello's most subtle acoustic characteristics as they harmonically interlock with mind's embodied modalities of attention and imagination. Blue Veil arises out of, is sustained in and finally dissolves back into Railton's momentary presence with her intimate connection to the cello, a way of hearing that allows for a deeper engagement with harmonic resonance, one that opens a space for immediate encounters of mind and sound. Railton's exploratory practice of harmonic perception emerges from a focus on the physical qualities of intervallic and chordal sounds, their textural qualities, degrees of friction, and inner pulsations. Composing in the moment guided by resonances within the cello's body, her own, and their shared vibrational space, Railton moves through Blue Veil by giving sounds what they ask for: sounds of pure texture manifesting as a move through temporal transparency, sounds of rough texture marking regions of dimensionally dense space. Railton's creative and highly refined use of just intonation harmony deforms sound's inner movements in ways that suggest a mode of listening that actively supplies imagery of sounds implied or completely absent rather than merely savouring those fully present.

Superheaven - Superheaven CD/LP (Blue Grape Music)

Superheaven not only relies, but also thrives on the interplay of it's four members-Jake Clarke [lead vocals, guitar], Taylor Madison [lead vocals, guitar], Joe Kane [bass], and Zack Robbins [drums]. The music unfolds like an unspoken conversation between the respective players (and old friends), revolving around post-hardcore grit, full-bodied and fuzzed-out distortion, and hazy alternative melodies. Muscular riffs make indentations in a perpetually droning soundscape, fissuring into fits of catchy catharsis and hypnotic jamming without rival. [indie store exclusive aqua color vinyl.]

YHWH Nailgun - 45 Pounds LP (Miscellaneous Records)

YHWH Nailgun is a luminary four-person experimental rock project based in NYC, made up of artists Zack Borzone (vocals), Saguiv Rosenstock (guitar), Jack Tobias (synth + electronics), and Sam Pickard (drums). Their music is a visceral blend of styles that reaches toward an absolute essence. 45 Pounds is their debut album.

Chick Corea - Piano Improvisations Vol. 1 LP (ECM)

Chick Corea's first unaccompanied album initiated the solo piano idiom at ECM and proved to be extremely influential. Alongside music created in the moment, some powerful melodies are explored here, not least that of "Sometime Ago," soon to be a theme song for the Return To Forever band. "I found it quite easy to select what I felt was the single best disc [of 1971]. Chick Corea's Piano Improvisations Vol. 1 is a true masterpiece of music and a very important album" - Michael Cuscuna, Record World.

Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges - Side By Side LP (Verve Acoustic Sounds)

When Norman Granz signed Johnny Hodges to a recording contract in 1951, it was a prelude to Hodges' leaving the Duke Ellington orchestra to lead his own small band. Four years later Hodges was back in the Ellington fold, but he continued to record for Granz under his own name. Side By Side, recorded in 1958 and 1959, is a throwback to the small-group sessions Ellington recorded with Hodges and other members of his orchestra in the 1930s, but with a couple of important differences: the absence of Ellington himself on several cuts (with Billy Strayhorn taking over on piano), and the presence of such notable non-Ellingtonians as drummer Jo Jones and trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Harry "Sweets" Edison. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Bill Evans - Further Ahead: Live in Finland 1964-1969 2xCD (Elemental)

Limited edition, one per customer.

Grateful Dead - Bear’s Sonic Journals: Sing Out! LP (Owsley Stanley)

The event was described by Wavy Gravy as a "mini-Woodstock," and it is the last major show to be mixed and recorded by famed Grateful Dead soundman Owsley Stanley, aka "Bear." It is also the final live recording he made of any members of the Grateful Dead. This vinyl release offers the Grateful Dead’s acoustic set.
