Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Old Crow Medicine Show – Paint This Town CD/LP (ATO/Virgin)

Paint This Town is a return to form for Old Crow Medicine Show, showcasing their ability to merge profound introspection with the rapturous string band revival sound. The album is their most incisive body of work to date and shines a light on the darker aspects of the American experience with character-driven songs underpinned by the band's vision for a more harmonious future. Old Crow Medicine Show offers a riveting glimpse into American mythology and the wildly colorful characters who populate it. Co-produced by OCMS and Matt Ross-Spang, the album pays homage to everyone from Elvis Presley to Eudora Welty. Paint This Town's title track is a swinging anthem that fully embodies the band's carefree troublemaking over the last two decades. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl with 3 different cover variants. All vinyl copies at Grimey’s come with a sleeve autographed by the band! Signed CD copies also available beginning April 23. Available in the shop with limited stock online.]

Robert Ames / Ben Corrigan – Carbs CD (Modern Recordings)

When Robert Ames and Ben Corrigan started crafting the seven tracks on their debut album as Carbs, they were having fun. Corrigan, a composer and podcast host, and Ames, a conductor, composer, and curator, are often the people who bring other artists' music to life. On Carbs, they had the opportunity to explore their voices as music makers, taking inspiration from their robust history of collaborations and passion for electronic and classical music to create sound that's both cinematic and danceable, built on lush harmony, catchy patterns and driving rhythms that form an outer space trance. Corrigan and Ames first met three years ago when Ames was a guest on Corrigan's podcast, excuse the mess.

Anadol - Felicita LP (Pingipung)

A sense of authentic exploration, introspection, and celebration coats every inch of Anadol's latest album. After 2019's Uzun Havalar, the Turkish artist returns with an album that continues to explore a variety of deeply embedded musical traditions while also hurtling into new terrain. "If there is any tradition I am somehow connected to, or influenced by, then it's multi-genres," she says. "Such as Turkish Pop and Arabesk music from this country where I grew up. There is a connection to folk and also French pop or Flamenco, Middle Eastern melodies and orchestration, Greek adaptations, Kenny G. solos, American guitars." Weaving synth productions and field recordings together with performances from Istanbul-based jazz musicians, Felicita glides across genres, eschewing convention and predictability along the way, to result in a woozy kaleidoscopic experience.

Animals As Leaders – Parrhesia LP (Sumerian)

Recently released on CD – now available on indie store exclusive orange vinyl. The groundbreaking, genre defying instrumental trio release their highly anticipated new album.

Archgoat – All Christianity Ends CD/LP (Debemur Morti Prod.)

All Christianity Ends is a brutally focused reminder that while the infamous Finnish black/death metal legends continue to evolve, develop, and even 'refine' their hellish sound over recent full lengths, the elemental building blocks of classic Archgoat remain sequenced in their DNA. [Limited edition transparent blood red & black vinyl with ‘spinner effect’]

Audrey Horne – Devil’s Bell LP (Napalm)

Powerful, heavy, melodic, in-your-face. These are the main attributes of Audrey Horne's music. Formed in 2002, the Norwegians underline with every new album that they are here to stay. The band is an unstoppable energy bomb firing on all cylinders during their live shows. With a weak spot for hard rock's classics and loaded with an endless amount of passion, these guys are just infectious.

Belmont – Aftermath CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Aftermath is driving a chasm between Belmont and their peers with a stunning evolution. Led by the classical training of Inguagiato and Lada, both of whom studied at Berklee College of Music, as well as the pure instinctual prowess of the collective, Aftermath brings never-before-heard influences to the forefront in a brand-new way. In a landscape more genre-less than ever, it's the seamless, at-times effortless blending of disparate sounds that guides Aftermath on a hyper-modern tour through musical styles - steadied by the pop-punk energy that's won Belmont legions fans on tours. [Indie store exclusive royal blue with violet smoke, white & hot pink splatter vinyl.]

Big Nothing – Dog Hours LP (Run For Cover)

Transparent blue color vinyl pressing. Sonically, Big Nothing find themselves borrowing cues from indie mainstays like Superchunk and The Replacements. It's clear that they are trying to unhinge themselves from patterns they've repeated in the past, but they're also not afraid to blast the tried-and-true methods of rock ‘n’ roll.

Kate Bollinger – Look At It In The Light LP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)

Kate Bollinger's songs tend to linger well beyond their run times, filling the negative space of ordinary days with charming melodies and smart phrasings. She writes them at home in Richmond, Virginia, letting her subconscious lead, an open-ended process she likens to dreaming. From a chord progression appears a line, maybe a syllable will start to stick, enough to pursue, but she says sometimes the words don't feel like her own, more like shapes that form in the mind's sky. While many are personal and deal with the emotions that surface with finding her place in the world, she'd prefer they be whatever you'd like them to be, to connect with listeners in their own way. Bollinger's musical universe is relaxed, tender, and unassuming; within lives a timeless sensibility, a songwriter's knack for noticing the little things and their counterpoints. [Limited-edition blue marbled vinyl.]

Calexico – El Mirador LP (ANTI-)

Indie store exclusive metallic gold color vinyl pressing. Calexico's Joey Burns and John Convertino return in with their luminous tenth studio album, El Mirador; a hopeful, kaleidoscopic beacon of rock, bluesy ruminations, and Latin American sounds. Oscillating between haunting desert noirs and buoyant jolts of cumbia and Cuban son, the album is permeated by longing. The title track "El Mirador" conjures images of a lighthouse, beckoning to lost souls in the night with hypnotic bass lines and cascading percussion. El Mirador also features vocals from Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno, while Spanish rocker Jairo Zavala brings his signature bravado to the track "Cumbia Peninsula". By working with friends and recurring collaborators, Calexico also highlights the unique social and linguistic intersections at the US-Mexico border and the magnificent possibilities of a borderless world.

S. Carey – Break Me Open CD/LP+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)

S. Carey is the moniker of Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Sean Carey. Over the past decade, Carey has fostered his flourishing solo career via themes of nature and sustainability, songwriting built from jazz beginnings, and heartfelt, emotive lyricism. [Limited edition ‘eco teal’ color vinyl.]

Ry Cooder / Taj Mahal – Get On Board: The Songs Of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Nearly sixty years after they first played together, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, longtime friends and collaborators, reunite with an album of music from two Piedmont blues masters who have inspired them all their lives: Get On Board: The Songs Of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.

With Taj Mahal on vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano and Cooder on vocals, guitar, mandolin, and banjo—joined by Joachim Cooder on drums and bass—the duo recorded eleven songs drawn from recordings and live performances by Terry and McGhee, who they both first heard as teenagers in California.

Charley Crockett – Lil’ GL Presents: Jukebox Charley CD/LP (Son Of Davy)

Charley Crockett delivers the new album Lil' G.L. Presents: Jukebox Charley. The fourth edition of his Lil' G.L. tribute series, produced by Billy Horton, Jukebox Charley is another great example of how Crockett is enlivening country music by looking back for inspiration and crafting his own singular sound whether through his own songs or the songs of others. On this new collection, Crockett mines country music's past and then processes it through his singular "Gulf & Western" sound - weaving old school blues, R&B, soul, Cajun, western swing and other classic touchstones with country. And while the album features songs written by country legends like Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall and George Jones, Crockett also shines a light on songs from regional acts like Louisiana's Larry Brasso or a deep cut from Red Sovine. And even when he's interpreting songs from country legends, Crockett steers toward lesser-known or underappreciated songs, eschewing staples of the genre.

Dorothy – Gifts From The Holy Ghost CD/LP (Roc Nation)

Gifts From The Holy Ghost, Dorothy Martin's third studio album as frontwoman for their pseudonymous rock band Dorothy, is the album she's always wanted to make. Born from a sense of diving urgency, it's their most bombastic rock ‘n’ roll work yet. While the debut album was made on a combination of whiskey and heartbreak, Gifts was built on sobriety, health, and spiritualism, in a way that reverses the cliched "good girl gone bad" narrative.

Roger Eno – Turning Year CD/LP (Deutsche Grammophon)

Following the success of Mixing Colours - the 2020 duo release with his brother Brian Eno - Roger Eno returns for his solo debut on the Yellow Label. This time focusing solely on his own compositions, Eno presents a lush collection of lyrical pieces both old and new. "I thought about how our years comprise of moments, days, and the changing months. Of how we live our lives in facets, how we catch fleeting glimpses, how we walk through our lives, how we notice the turning year." - Roger Eno.

Fontaines D.C. – Skinty Fia CD/LP/2xLP (Partisan)

2020's A Hero's Death saw Fontaines D.C. land a No. 2 album in the UK, receive nominations at the Grammys, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards, and sell out London's iconic Alexandra Palace. Now the band return with their third record in as many years: Skinty Fia. Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as "the damnation of the deer"; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer. [A limited-edition opaque red color vinyl pressing, and a deluxe double-LP 45rpm audiophile edition is available. Standard black vinyl edition due May 6.]

God is God - Metamorphoses LP (Bureau B)

Debut album from the electronic duo of Turkish musician, producer and Kinship label founder Etkin Çekin and Belarussian multi-instrumentalist, composer, singer and Not Not Fun alumni Galina Ozeran. Metamorphoses is the product of their second ever improvisational encounter: an undulating, avant-pop journey of low-BPM twists and turns guided by Ozeran's synthesizers, Russian and English vocals and Çekin's ethereal production and guitar sensibility. Central to the album's musical narrative are both contemporary dancefloor-adjacent electronics and Eastern European and Turkish psychedelic electronic traditions -- all filtered through the prism of Çekin and Ozeran's respective musical histories.

Lani Hall (feat. Herb Alpert) – Seasons Of Love CD (Herb Alpert Presents)

Renowned author and Grammy award-winning singer Lani Hall returns to release her first new studio album in over 20 years, Seasons Of Love. Rising to fame in the 1960s as the lead singer for Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66, Hall has been a prominent vocal talent for decades. She famously sang the title song for the 1983 James Bond film, Never Say Never Again. Her Latin albums in the 1980s yielded multiple gold records and a Grammy award for Best Latin Pop Performance. Hall continues to record and perform with husband Herb Alpert, and this new collection of songs is a major return to form.

Hatchie – Giving The World Away CD/LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)

The sophomore album from Hatchie is the truest introduction to the songwriter/bassist at the helm of the project, Harriette Pilbeam. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht, Giving The World Away is Hatchie's most thunderous, sprawling work yet. Featuring input from longtime Hatchie collaborator Joe Agius, it takes the celestial, shimmering shoegaze, and pop sensibilities of her earlier releases, but with the volume knob cranked up tenfold. Built out with percussion from Beach House drummer James Barone, it's synthed-out, sonic opulence, a more structured and ornate musicality with traces of '90s trip-hop and acid house influences. [Coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Joshua Hedley – Neon Blue CD/LP (New West)

Joshua Hedley is 'a singing professor of country & western,' he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it's not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he's devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. His previous records have showcased his deep knowledge of country music history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and '60s. Neon Blue, on the other hand, examines a very different, often forsaken era: the early 1990s. Neon Blue asks, “What if that fork had never happened? What if country kept on sounding like country?” Hedley finds something exciting in that old hat-act sound, and Neon Blue plays up the excitement of bigger-than-life choruses, the relatable emotions of those sad-eyed ballads, and the inventiveness of the lively production. [Super limited TN exclusive ‘Robert’s Fried Bologna Pink’ vinyl, signed by Josh. An indie store exclusive autographed CD edition and an indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing are also available.]

Jewel – Freesheelin’ Woman CD (Jewel Murray Words)

The first album in seven years from the four-time Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum singer-songwriter. The album presents Jewel's boldest and most unbridled body of work to date, revealing entirely new dimensions of her breathtaking voice. Includes the single "Dancing Slow”.

Kollmorgen - 1243 12" (Kompakt)

On Emma Kollmorgen's debut EP, 1243, she presents a five-track suite of night-vision electronic pop, smoke-signal torch songs bristling with a stealthy sensuality. Each song is confident and poised, Kollmorgen relying on cross-thatched patterns of texture as a web to support her vocal melodies: "I like patterns," she says, "they give me something to hold onto, something stable in an unstable world." The songs feel as though they're grappling with moments of revelation and experience in Kollmorgen's world, which makes sense, given her approach to music: "I never had a diary," she reflects, "so writing songs is my way of expressing and dealing with life." On 1243, you'll catch some glimpses of life lived, made sonorous through songs beautifully sung.

Laibach – Wir Sind Das Volk (Ein Musical Aus Deutschland) CD (Mute)

Laibach's 2022 album Wir Sind Das Volk (Ein Musical Aus Deutschland) consists of the music from the band's political theater production Wir Sind Das Volk (We Are The People), which premiered at HAU (Berlin) in 2020. The piece was based on the writings of Heiner Müller (1929 1995), who was observed as one of the most significant German-language playwrights and poets since Bertolt Brecht. [Vinyl edition due June 10.]

Loop – Sonancy CD/LP (Cooking Vinyl)

"Style-wise, it's incredibly different, going back to thinking about guitars and guitar sounds. Obviously, you have to take into consideration things like percussive elements such as drums, which I haven't been using in my other projects; but this is the mindset that makes up Loop." So says Robert Hampson, the indefatigable visionary behind inspirational sonic architects Loop, whose eagerly anticipated fourth LP Sonancy (Latin for "to create noise") is the perfect document for these strange times. Dynamic, dystopian, righteously angry, and unashamedly Loop-ian, it's an album that marks a vital re-emergence for Hampson and Co.

Magnolia Park – Halloween Mixtape CD (Epitaph)

Made up of lead vocalist Joshua Roberts, guitarists Tristan Torres and Freddie Criales, bassist Jared Kay, drummer Joe Horsham, and keyboardist Vincent Ernst, Magnolia Park have recorded almost all their output to date with Audio Compound producers Andrew Wade and Andy Karpovck. The first iteration of the band formed in 2019, with a mission of inventively fusing genres while increasing inclusivity in the punk world. " An up-close portrait of a long-distance relationship, new single "Back Home" took shape from a demo created by Ernst (a dual citizen who mainly lives in Germany). The track perfectly encapsulates the potent tension at the heart of Magnolia Park, unfolding in moody guitar work, dreamy textures, thrashing rhythms, and sing-along-ready melodies. Another track showcasing the cathartic power of their sound, the wildly catchy "Tonight" feat. Lil Lotus also explores a bittersweet emotional experience. The follow-up to their early 2021 EP Dream Eater, Halloween Mixtape features such standout tracks as "Kids Like Us," an anthem for all those who've struggled with being marginalized. [Vinyl edition due June 3.]

Ella Mai – Time Change Ready 3xLP (Interscope)

Coffee rituals, daydreams and isolation make up some of the muses on 7.37/2.11. Composed of a selection of soundscapes created by Aleksandra Zakharenko throughout various stages of last year, 7.37/2.11 acts as an auditory journal that chronicles the fluctuating states of vague ambiguity the artists faced during the unprecedented turmoil of 2020.

Bonnie Raitt – Just Like That… CD/LP (Redwing)

With Just Like That..., her twenty-first album and first new release in more than six years, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bonnie Raitt continues to display the vitality and urgency that has defined her legendary career. The mix of sounds and approaches on Just Like That... reveals how, 50 years after the release of her debut album, Raitt continues to personify what it means to stay creative, adventurous, and daring over the course of a life's work. "On this record, I wanted to stretch," she says. "I always want to find songs that excite me, and what's different this time is that I've tried some styles and topics I haven't touched on before." [Indie store exclusive teal vinyl with special enclosed card from Bonnie.]

Tony Rolando - Breakin' is a Memory LP (Important Records)

Tony Rolando invites the listener on tiny adventures seeking insignificant treasures. Minimal percussion only suggests rhythm, allowing your mind to wander the crystalline lattices Tony weaves from handfuls of simple arpeggios. The pace of Breakin' is a Memory oscillates from restless roadway motion to meditative exploration, closing with a celebratory decimation of the graphic memories of these tiny adventures. This worldbuilding album of electronic music leaves room for the listener to make big personal connections through subtly complex music resembling a sonic mobile which, as it spins, reveals new forms and colors. RIYL: Early Oneohtrix Point Never, Alessandro Cortini, Caterina Barbieri, Tangerine Dream.

Ruby The Hatchet – Live At Earthquaker 7” (Magnetic Eye)

With sultry, honey-smoked vocals, lush yet crisp guitars and spirit of rock 'n' roll organ heroics, it takes just a few seconds for luxuriant opening track “1000 Years” from Ruby The Hatchet's hot-blooded new EP Live At Earthquaker to firmly sink its hooks into ears and hearts.

Somali Yacht Club – The Space CD/2xLP (Season Of Mist)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Named after the real-life pirates who attack vessels off the Somalian coast and the peaceful leisure of those with time to kill and money to burn, Somali Yacht Club musically embodies the boundless, wide-open, quiet/loud spaces that atmospheric post-rock and metal occupy. The band's third full-length The Space finds the trio in full expanse of their sonic elements, delivering six cuts of atmospheric post-rock/metal with dashes of melancholy and introspection.

Spiritualized – Everything Was Beautiful CD/LP (Fat Possum)

Jason Pierce returns with the ninth studio album from his space-rock Spiritualized project which is ushered in by the soaring lead single "Always Together With You." Following up 2018's And Nothing Hurt, Everything Was Beautiful features seven tracks recorded by Pierce (who plays 16 instruments here) and over 30 musicians and singers across 11 different studios, as well as his home. Collaborators include his daughter Poppy, John Coxon, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and more. "There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it but going around in circles is important to me," Pierce explains. "Not like you're spiraling out of control but you're going around and around, and, on each revolution, you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that's how you kind of... achieve. Well, you get there." [Indie store exclusive pink vinyl.]

Becca Stevens – Becca Stevens Attacca Quartet CD (Groundup Music Merch)

Nearly a decade ago, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 2021 Grammy nominee Becca Stevens was approached with an intriguing concept: to reimagine a selection of her songs with string arrangements for a performance at San Diego's illustrious Mainly Mozart Festival. Little did she know, it would be a life-changing opportunity-introducing her to her future husband, the acclaimed violist, composer, and member of the Grammy Award-winning Attacca Quartet, Nathan Schram. The concert would also inspire a career-spanning passion project and resulted in the couple's first collaborative album, Becca Stevens Attacca Quartet.

Tatyana – Treat Me Right LP (Sinderlyn)

Clear vinyl pressing. Co-produced with Metronomy's Joseph Mount, electro-pop artist Tatyana's debut album is a careful fusion of her classical harp training with her keen sense for pop production and songwriting. Inspired by late-2000s indie pop and Swedish pop auteurs, Treat Me Right is a sparkling, catchy collection of '80s synths and futuristic auto-tuned vocals.

Damian Dalla Torre - Happy Floating LP (Squama)

Happy Floating is the debut LP of Italian composer, producer, and reed player Damian Dalla Torre. Over the course of two years, the Leipzig-based artist recorded 19 musicians in all kinds of places to bring to life his unique blend of avant folk and electronic. With reeds, brass, guitars, bass, drums, mallets, synthesizers, organ, and electronics, the album feels like a mindful walk through a flowering meadow, tickling and caressing all at once.

Undeath – It’s Time… To Rise From The Grave CD/LP (Prosthetic)

[New York-based Undeath have returned from their mutilated tomb to horrify and dominate death metal's insatiable masses once again. Their blessedly sick new album, It's Time... To Rise From The Grave, shows the reconfigured quintet-Kyle Beam (guitars), Alexander Jones (vocals), Tommy Wall (bass), Jared Welch (guitars) and Matt Browning (drums) - have retained their mind-infecting sonic savagery but weren't satisfied in their pursuit to improve it through wicked (yet studied) reformulation. Certainly, Undeath's 2021 Decibel flexi, Diemented Dissection, paved the way, but it's tracks like "Fiend for Corpses," "Rise From The Grave," and "The Funeral Within" that display Undeath's terrifyingly insane trajectory. It's Time... To Rise From The Grave isn't just an early contender for death metal album of 2022 - it's destined to be a modern-day classic. [Two color vinyl pressings are available for special order: an indie store exclusive red w/ yellow & violet edition and a purple w/ white edition.]

Originally released in 1959, Afro-Desia marks the end of Martin Denny's '50s experimentalism before his move into more conventional cocktail jazz.

The Drones - Wait Long by the River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By 2xLP (Bang! Records)

Acclaimed second album by The Drones finally reissued by Bang! Records, originally released in 2005. Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By draws influence from the likes of Neil Young and The Birthday Party, though it has been described by lead singer/guitarist Gareth Liddiard himself as a punk rock album. The lyrics, penned by Liddiard, deal with issues such as death, depression and alcoholism in its depiction of Australian working-class life. The album received critical acclaim upon release, regarded later on as the band's "break-out" and one of their most popular releases. The track "Shark Fin Blues", in particular, went on to become a concert staple and was voted by contemporary Australian songwriters as the greatest Australian song of all time in October 2009.

Eyedea & Abilities – First Born [Reisssue/2001] 2xLP+12” (Rhymesayers)

Micheal "Eyedea" Larsen and Gregory "DJ Abilities" Keltgen first met in the mid- ‘90s and soon began a working relationship that would play a prominent role in the burgeoning indie-rap movement of the time. After numerous successes across nearly every notable MC or DJ battle of the late '90s and early '00s, including HBO's Blaze Battle, the Rocksteady Anniversary, Scribble Jam, the DMC's and more, they had already cemented their legacies both as individuals in the battle scene and as the dynamic duo, Eyedea & Abilities, for their live performances and showmanship. However, determined not to be dismissed as one-dimensional, they set out to prove they were to be taken just as seriously at writing and recording. The release of their debut album, First Born, revealed their talents to be much more versatile and expansive than previously expected. The boastful arrogance and punchlines that had become synonymous with battling were notably scarce on the album. This limited vinyl package includes two galaxy effect color vinyl LPs and a bonus 12" pressed on ultra-clear laser-etched and UV printed vinyl featuring four bonus tracks.

Faust – 1971-1974 7xLP+2x7” (Bureau B)

Few bands have been as innovative, influential, or as irrepressible as Faust - the way they revolutionized the history of music in the space of just four years puts them right up there with The Velvet Underground. In addition to the debut album, it includes the 1972 album So Far, the legendary 1973 Virgin UK release The Faust Tapes, Faust IV and, for the first time ever, the mythical, so-called Munich album Punkt, which Faust recorded at Giorgio Moroder's Musicland Studios in 1974. For one reason or another, this last album never saw the light of day - until now. The bonus albums Momentaufnahme I and Momentaufnahme II also feature unreleased material, simultaneously affording us a fascinating glimpse of Faust's creativity in their Wümme studio phase.

From artists like Kamasi Washington bringing him to a new generation, Chrissie Hynde, whose latest album includes a Mingus cover, Candace Springs, Elvis Costello, to Gang Starr sampling him, and Joni Mitchell writing lyrics to his music. A recent sample darling of both Kanye West and Tyler The Creator, "Bound" has revealed the Ponderosa Twins Plus One as the real Midwest kid soul deal. This vinyl reissue comprises remasters from the original analog tapes, two previously unissued bonus tracks, and a replica tip on sleeve.

Tortoise – Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters [Reissue/1995] LP+MP3 (Thrill Jockey)

Tortoise has spent nearly 30 years making music that defies description. While the Chicago-based instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its revered and influential discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even stubbornly, their own. One of the thrulines that create that distinctive sound is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters follows in this line as Tortoise turned their iconic early songs over to their friends to remix.
