Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
The Acacia Strain – Step Into The Light CD/2xLP (Rise)
The Acacia Strain – Failure Will Follow CD/2xLP (Rise)
Two same-day new releases by the metalcore/deathcore band.
The Amity Affliction – Not Without My Ghosts CD/LP (Pure Noise)
With a musicality as heavy and hard-hitting as singer Joel Birch's intensely emotional lyrics-about suicide, gun violence, religion, and mental illness - Not Without My Ghosts finds The Amity Affliction at their brutal best. With four vocal features, including rising Los Angeles talent Phem, the band's first female feature, on the title track, the Australian quartet's eighth LP pushes the boundaries and genres of heavy music. From start to finish, TAA's whisper-to-a-scream energy, clean and unclean vocals and Dan Brown's masterfully dynamic guitar work underscore each track's dramatic ups and downs. [Indie store exclusive marble blue w/ black and white vinyl.]
Jonathan Bree – Pre-Code Hollywood CD/LP (Lil’ Chief)
Jonathan Bree's fifth studio album Pre-Code Hollywood is described as a "dark disco" album full of "sad bangers". Jonathan Bree has been called a "master craftsman" by AllMusic and on his fifth solo album he has synthesized his concept into refined and focused pop songs that bring a sense of immediate nostalgia one might get when listening to a John Hughes movie soundtrack or classic pop of a bygone era.
Cattle Decapitation – Terrasite CD/2xLP (Metal Blade)
Though many bands have tried, no one articulates the real apocalypse humanity is facing as vividly and succinctly as Cattle Decapitation. With 2019's Death Atlas they reached the apex of this, perhaps leading some to believe they had no place left to go beyond such an achievement, but now they return with Terrasite, which is as bold a statement as they have ever made. Terrasite pushes their sound further into more epic and varied territory, and in the hands of vocalist Travis Ryan the governing concept takes a new and disturbing direction. [Two vinyl colorways are available: indie store exclusive orange and marbled orange w/ pink.]
Bruce Cockburn – O Sun O Moon CD/2xLP (True North)
Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while earning high praise as an exceptional songwriter and a revered guitarist. He remains deeply respected for his activism and humanist song lyrics that thread throughout his career. On all his albums Cockburn has deftly captured the joy, pain, fear, and faith of human experience in song.
Lauren Daigle – Lauren Daigle CD (New Elektra/Atlantic)
Two-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Lauren Daigle delivers her new self-titled album. Lead single "Thank God I Do" marks the launch of a new creative chapter for the multi-platinum-selling, Louisiana-bred artist. The creative team behind Lauren Daigle is led by Grammy-winning producer Mike Elizondo (Twenty One Pilots, Mary J. Blige, Fiona Apple, Carrie Underwood), and includes co-writes with Natalie Hemby, Shane McAnally, Amy Wadge, Lori McKenna, Jason Ingram and Jon Greene, to name a few. The album comprises 10 soulful and uplifting songs.
Daisies – Great Big Open Sky LP (K. Records)
Seventh release from the purveyors of the electronic paisley underground. Great Big Open Sky continues the rich tradition of DIY bands crafting instant pop hits entirely on their own terms, which has long been the hallmark of the Olympia Underground.
DevilDriver – Dealing With Demons Volume II CD/LP (Napalm)
Once again produced and engineered by Steve Evetts with additional engineering from guitarist Mike Spreitzer, Dealing With Demons Vol. II is heavier and relentlessly harsher than its predecessor, Dealing With Deamons Volume I. Dealing With Demons Vol. II represents not only the most vicious of the two records, but also the darkest recesses of iconic frontman Dez Fafara's psyche and the final purging of his demons that have long haunted the band's music. If there is any question as to whether DevilDriver is slowing down any time soon, Dealing With Demons Volume II proves that 20 years into their career, even with their demons in tow - they move forward at the forefront of metal. [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl.]
Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem – The Electric Mayhem (Original Soundtrack) LP (Walt Disney)
After 45 years of rockin' out, The Electric Mayhem - Dr. Teeth on vocals and keyboards, Animal on drums, Floyd Pepper on vocals and bass, Janice on vocals and lead guitar, Zoot on saxophone and Lips on trumpet - goes on an epic, music-filled journey to record their first-ever studio album. With the help of a driven young music executive, Nora, the old-school Muppet band comes face to face with the current day music scene as they try to finally go platinum. Available on translucent electric purple with blue swirl.
Dropkick Murphys – Okemah Rising CD/LP (Dummy Luck Music)
Dropkick Murphys history with Woody Guthrie dates back decades, from covering "Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight" on their 2003 album Blackout, to using some of Guthrie's writing about Boston in their immortal hit "I'm Shipping Up To Boston". On their recent 2022 album, This Machine Still Kills Fascists, Dropkick Murphys crafted an entire record around the seminal American folk icon, bringing Woody Guthrie's perennial jabs at life - many of which are from the 1940s and '50s - into the present, with the resulting music eerily relevant to the day's world. Okemah Rising is the second and final installment of this collaboration, and the band bring it home with a bang. Whereas the goal of This Machine Still Kills Fascists was to raise consciousness, Okemah Rising intends to raise the roof. It may have one or two tender moments, but all in all it's much more of a party.
Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, feat. Rakesh Chaurasia – As We Speak CD/LP (Béla Fleck Productions)
The first-time banjo legend Béla Fleck, tabla master Zakir Hussain, and double bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer got together to make an album, it was to write, not to play. Fleck had met Hussain at a workshop where, as Béla put it, "I thought Edgar and I could learn a lot from him." Later, when Fleck and Meyer were looking for a third partner for a triple concerto, they had been commissioned to write to mark the opening of Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center, they thought of Hussain, who wanted to learn more about orchestral writing. The result was The Melody Of Rhythm (2009). Now they return with As We Speak, a follow-up that not only showcases the group's breathtaking abilities as instrumentalists but underscores the wide range of musical influences at their command. Across a dozen tracks, the group glides easily between the cerebral complexity of Indian rhythm and the gut-level groove of a funky bass line, sounding equally at home with the rigors of raga.
James Ellis Ford – The Hum CD/LP+MP3 (Warp)
James Ellis Ford (Simian Mobile Disco & The Last Shadow Puppets) has been hidden in plain sight for his entire two-decade-long career. The composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter has worked with some of the biggest names in music, from Arctic Monkeys to Depeche Mode via Foals, Gorillaz and Kylie Minogue, but has always dedicated himself to the success of these projects almost to the point of self-erasure. He alone has crafted one of the most bewitching and persuasive albums of 2023. The ten tracks are as much homage to the tender and eccentric English pop music of Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt as it is love letter to his wife and son’s Palestinian roots.
LP Giobbi – Light Places LP (Counter)
Limited translucent blue color vinyl pressing. Producer, DJ, pianist, and activist LP Giobbi shares Light Places - her long-awaited and highly anticipated full-length debut album. Featuring multiple tracks with impressive names like Sofi Tucker, Little Jet, Caroline Byrne, Monogem, DJ Tennis & Joseph Ashworth throughout the album, Light Places see's LP celebrate the joys of collaboration, improvisation and creating music through friendship - paying homage to the people and music that shaped her as an artist.
Alison Goldfrapp – The Love Invention CD/2xLP (Skint/BMG)
Alison Goldfrapp has set a towering bar for British synth-pop in the 21st century and she's only just getting started. The magnetic London-born singer, songwriter, and producer's seven albums with Goldfrapp were fueled by an unfailing modernity and a sixth sense for sounds that were more timeless than any trend. With the release of her debut solo album The Love Invention – an electrifying dance-pop suite – her multi-faceted musicianship reaches a new peak. The Love Invention marks Alison's reawakening as a dancefloor priestess, in an intoxicating showcase of the disco and house influences that have always been at the heart of her musical DNA. [Indie store exclusive purple vinyl.]
Mike Gordon – Flying Games CD/LP (ATO)
Flying Games, the sixth solo LP from Mike Gordon, is an album of constant and wildly hypnotic movement, each moment animated by unexpected sounds that morph and expand and spin off into their own strange orbits. Flying Games was produced by the Phish bassist, recorded by longtime collaborator Jared Slomoff, and mixed by six-time Grammy-winning engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, The War On Drugs). [A limited-edition white w/ turquoise blue and green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Bobby Harden & The Soulful Saints – One Night Of The Week b/w Raise Your Mind 7” (Dala)
Bobby Harden & The Soulful Saints – Bridge Of Love LP (Dala)
Bridge Of Love runs the soul gamut, from grits-n-bricks R&B (“Played A Fool By You”) to throw-back psychedelia (“One Tribe”), svelte ‘70s pop (“One Night Of The Week”) and some seriously sophisticated ballads (“Wounded Hearts”, “Bridge Of Love”). Together they document Bobby's life journey in song. Through youthful self-doubt in the opening track “It's My Time”, to confirmation on the exuberant finale “Raise Your Mind”, Bobby proves that faith and hard work can pay dividends. "Life is a joy when you free your soul." [Limited-edition ‘hazy black’ vinyl.]
Hot Mulligan – Why Would I Watch CD/LP (Wax Bodega)
Hot Mulligan's third LP, Why Would I Watch cements their evolution as one the most versatile and profoundly moving bands in the underground. Produced by longtime collaborator Brett Romnes, Why Would I Watch is Hot Mulligan at their loudest, their poppiest, and, ultimately, their most poignant. [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]
Island Of Love – Island Of Love CD (Third Man)
A band has to be one of the most incredible live outfits in the country when they get signed immediately after a show in the time it takes to pop outside for a cigarette break. This is exactly what happened to Island of Love after they were invited to play The Blue Basement venue in Third Man Records - which opened in September 2021 in London as the third Third Man store after Nashville and Detroit. Island Of Love were second only to Jack White himself to play the room and it was still so new that the drummer even left with paint on his back from where he'd been pressed up against the wall playing. While countless London bands continue to go down the same tired path of churning outspoken word post-punk, Island Of Love marry raw, primal noise led by crunchy guitars with intrinsically melodic sensibilities - recalling the sound and spirit of peak-era Dinosaur Jr. or Husker Dü.
Joji – Smithereens LP (Warner)
Smithereens marks Joji's first full-length since Nectar in 2020. He delivers his characteristically melancholic yet powerful vocals on tracks like "Die For You", a sober, morning-after remembrance of a former love. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]
Jonas Brothers – The Album CD/LP (Republic)
The Jonas Brothers’ new album was inspired by music from the ‘70s – particularly that of the Bee Gees. Funk-laced lead single "Wings" runs for just under two minutes, but in that time packs in a funky bassline and pockets of timeless harmonies while setting the tone for the rest of The Album.
Kabeaushé – Coming Of Gaze LP (Hakuna Kulala)
Since they were just a child growing up on the banks of the Kagera, the huge river that curls throughout East Africa, Kenyan multi-instrumentalist, singer, and producer Kabeaushé realized there was a sparkle inside that set them apart from their peers. As other kids assembled hierarchies and favored aggressive competition, Kabeaushé became obsessed with compassion, cuteness, and ecstatic softness; uninterested in friction, they were driven by a search for bliss that, in time, directed them towards music. Inspired by Prince, Grace Jones, Bollywood soundtracks and, more recently, the boundlessly creative hybrid sounds of Tyler The Creater, Kabeaushé slowly began assembling a unique style that melts together music and theater, cooking up songs that are as supple and funky as they are gentle and self-aware. The Coming Of Gaze is Kabeaushé's ambitious debut statement, an album that's as meticulously conceived as an acrobatic stage-show, and as flexible as a silk scarf.
Ky – Power Is The Pharmacy LP+MP3 (Constellation)
Ky is the new "solo" project of Ky Brooks, best known as vocalist/lyricist of noise trio Lungbutter and a slew of other Montréal-based out-music projects like eight-person queer punk band Femmaggots and experimental/improv trio Nag. Power Is The Pharmacy is an album of cerebral and visceral artpunk "mainly about grief, death, the fear of loss, losing dreams, losing youth, people, public space, ultimately oneself" - an emotionally electrifying collection of songs fueled by Ky's piercing poetry, both spoken and sung, delivering an incisive blend of socio-political observation and spiritual sadness, swirling through vortices of disenchantment and re-enchantment.
Little Image – Self Titled LP (Hollywood)
Limited red color vinyl pressing. While many artists had their careers derailed due to COVID, Little Image were gearing up to announce themselves to the world. This time allowed the band feat. Jackson Simmons (vocals/guitar), Brandon Walters (bass/synth), and Troy Bruner (drums) to explore different ways to create a pop-rock song beyond the basic guitar/bass/drums template. This creativity led to an album that tells a story of self-doubt, self-reflection and self-love that they hope connects with people globally.

Madison's latest project, I Hope You Can Forgive Me, represents an evolution in her career as she finds ways to improvise and self-produce in the midst of an ever changing global pandemic landscape. I Hope You Can Forgive Me builds upon that next step sonically while exploring themes of love, self-preservation, fear, and conjuring. What comes out of this work and Madison's career thus far is a commitment to leave - leave fear and doubt behind in order to make space for what is next to come, all with a sense of style, fun, and invitation to dance through it. [Limited edition purple/clear mix color vinyl.]

Parker Millsap – Wilderness Within You CD/LP (Okrahoma)
It's been a time of intense, worldwide change over the past few years... or maybe it all depends on scale. Zooming out to a geological timeline, maybe not much has changed at all. On his sixth album Wilderness Within You, acclaimed singer/songwriter Parker Millsap explores this flux between the here and now and the big BIG picture, while reckoning with questions about humanity's place on this planet. The result is a study of contrasts: the personal versus the cosmic, sparse acoustic compositions sitting next to lush psychedelic improvisations. Above all, Wilderness Within You is an understanding of darkness while expressing an abundance of gratitude for life itself. [Indie store exclusive autographed maroon vinyl.]
