Blut Aus Nord - Disharmonium - Undreamable Abysses LP/CD (Debumur Morti)

The tide turns once again. From tumultuous oceanic depths French legend Blut Aus Nord erupts onland in all it's singular dissonant glory: be-tentacled, malformed, accursed, fearsome. Following up the purported 'new era' of melodicism ushered in by 2019's lauded "Hallucinogen", new work "Disharmonium - Undreamable Abysses" finds the leaders-in-perpetuity of Avant-garde Industrialised Black Metal compelled to reassume their rightful throne, crowning nigh-on 28 years of consistency with seven mesmerising tracks of bleakly-maximalist harmonic unease.

Cave In - Heavy Pendulum 2xLP/CD (Relapse)

The legendary Cave In makes a highly anticipated return with their Relapse Records debut, Heavy Pendulum, their first full studio record in over a decade. The band sees a revival following the addition of Nate Newton (Converge, Doomriders, Old Man Gloom) on bass and vocals. Produced by Kurt Ballou at God City, Heavy Pendulum showcases everything that has long established Cave In as one of the best contemporary rock, hardcore, and metal bands since their monumental 1998 debut Until Your Heart Stops. [Indie exclusive translucent gold vinyl.]

The Crease - vs. Mogwai 12” EP (Chunklet Industries)

You might be asking yourself “Is this some kind of gimmick?” or “Is this actually a racquetball record?” or most importantly, “Is this really Mogwai?” The answer to all these questions is a resounding “YES!” The Crease is the “nom de performance” for Chunklet Industries' Janitor of the Year (for seventeen years running, that is), none other than Henry Owings. Spawning from a crazy idea Owings hatched from years of being a racquetball player, he hired a professional recording engineer to come in and document (in all its 8-track spelendor) a racquetball match against Lockett from Atlanta band Deerhunter. Then, the isolated tracks were sent to Barry Burns from Mogwai, and The Crease “vs Mogwai” is the result. Offset sleeve includes a long-winded essay by, and sweaty courtside photographs of, The Crease. This is Henry's sophomore release, and the debut of The Crease. RIYL: Mogwai, Racquetball, sweaty dudes, looking at guitar pedals.

Dinner Party - Dinner Party: Dessert LP (Sounds of Crenshaw)

This is the remix album to the critically acclaimed super group, Dinner Party, entitled Dessert. [Limited edition fruit punch and canary yellow color vinyl.]

The project brings together a team of collaborators, with the album co-produced by Grammy Award-winning Producer, Engineer and Mixer Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Wilco), and Grammy Award-winning Artist and Producer David Garza (Fiona Apple, Midland, Sharon Van Etten).

Charlie Hickey - Nervous At Night LP (Saddest Factory)

Born into a musical family, as a child Charlie Hickey would obsessively watch videos of his parents on tour in their old band Uma, learning all the lyrics that he loved but didn't understand. This introduction to music sowed a seed, and Hickey was soon writing songs of his own, playing on the guitars that lay around him and singing about the little details of his school days. He continued throughout his teen years, his songs becoming an outlet for the growing anxieties that Hickey now understands to be Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This journey has led to Nervous At Night, Hickey's debut album, released via Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory Records. [Limited edition opaque yellow vinyl.]

High Pulp - Pursuit of Ends LP/CD (Anti-)

"We're a bunch of outsiders who refused to be kept out," says High Pulp drummer Bobby Granfelt. "We've never had an academic approach to jazz-most of us grew up playing in DIY bands-so it was the rawness and the energy and the absolute freedom of the music that called to us in the first place." Indeed, there's something defiant, something utterly liberating about High Pulp's remarkable ANTI- Records debut, Pursuit of Ends. Drawing on punk rock, shoegaze, hip-hop, and electronic music, the band's brand of experimental jazz is both vintage and futuristic all at once, hinting at times to everything from Miles Davis and Duke Ellington to Aphex Twin and My Bloody Valentine. While the Seattle-based collective is centered around a crew of six core members, they also make judicious use of a broad network of collaborators on the album, wrangling special guests like sax star Jaleel Shaw (Roy Haynes, Mingus Big Band), harpist Brandee Younger (Ravi Coltrane, The Roots), GRAMMY-nominated trumpeter Theo Coker, and keyboardist Jacob Mann (Rufus Wainwright, Louis Cole) to help stretch the boundaries of their already-expansive sonic universe. The result is a lush, cinematic collection that's as unpredictable as it is engrossing, an urgent, exhilarating instrumental album that manages to speak to the moment without uttering a single word. [Indie exclusive opaque tan vinyl.]

Hot Water Music - Feel The Void LP (Equal Vision)

New album, recorded at Black Bear Studios in Gainesville, FL, Feel The Void marks the return of producer Brian McTernan, who worked with the band on 2001's A Flight And A Crash, 2002's Caution and 2004's The New What Next, often thought of as Hot Water Music's classic period.

Cassandra Jenkins - (An Overview On) An Overview On Phenomenal Nature LP/CD (Ba Da Bing)

Cassandra Jenkins's An Overview on Phenomenal Nature emerged from the blue earlier this year. With pandemic unknowns and political upheaval leaving most at frayed ends, the New York-born musician's assuring voice and expansive fresh take on songwriting created a much needed reflective space for listeners worldwide. As 2021 comes to a close, Jenkins revisits those flowing textures and refrains with (An Overview on) An Overview on Phenomenal Nature, a collection of previously unreleased sonic sketches, initial run-throughs, demos, and sound recordings from the cutting room floor that provided the scaffolding for what became one of this year's most critically acclaimed albums.

Avi Kaplan - Floating On A Dream LP/CD (Fantasy)

Floating On A Dream is the full-length solo debut from Avi Kaplan. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner Shooter Jennings (Brandi Carlile, Tanya Tucker, American Aquarium), the album's steadfast musical foundation showcase. Avi's signature baritone vocals. Kronos Quartet - My Lai CD (Smithsonian Folkways)

On March 16, 1968, the United States Army killed over 500 unarmed civilians in the hamlet of Mỹ Lai, Vietnam. The unimaginable brutality of the event impacted all those who witnessed it firsthand, including helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson, who, against orders, intervened to save Vietnamese lives. Thompson's story is the basis of the opera Mỹ Lai, composed by Jonathan Berger (music) and Harriet Scott Chessman (libretto) for Kronos Quartet, Vietnamese multi-instrumentalist Vân-Ánh Vanessa Võ, and vocalist Rinde Eckert.

The Loyal Seas - Strange Mornings In the Garden LP/CD (American Laundromat)

The Loyal Seas are Tanya Donelly (Throwing Muses, Breeders, Belly) and Brian Sullivan (Dylan in the Movies). Their debut full-length features 10 glorious originals. Mastered by Sean Glonek at SRG studios (Matthew Sweet, Juliana Hatfield, Waxahatchee), with original artwork by Nicole Anguish at Daykamp Creative (Nada Surf, Letters to Cleo, Lake Street Dive). Vinyl pressed by hand at Burlington Record Plant in Burlington, VT. [Available in indie exclusive mint pearl and also limited edition pink rose color vinyls.]

Jose Medeles / M. Ward / Marisa Anderson - Railroad Cadences & Melancholic Anthems LP (Jealous Butcher)

Led by drummer Jose Medeles (Breeders, 1939 Ensemble, Revival Drum Shop), Railroad Cadences & Melancholic Anthems is a drummer's tribute to guitarist and DIY iconoclast John Fahey. Joined for a series of guitar and drum duets with M. Ward, experimental guitarist Marisa Anderson, and Chris Funk (Decemberists, Stephen Malkmus), it's a genuinely honorific project, featuring not Fahey compositions, but rather a series of improvised rendezvous inspired and informed by his looseness and rhythmic idiosyncrasies. Recording in the comfortable setting of Bocce Recording in Vancouver, WA, in 2020, these duets are playful and spiritually deep, presented with snapshot clarity Medeles likens to the recordings of Alan Lomax or Chris Strachwitz, 'who boldly captured field recording of Southern chain gangs and juke joint raconteurs decades ago. The result here is similar: pure and honest recordings.' [Limited edition translucent black smoke color vinyl.]

Van Morrison - What’s It Gonna Take 2xLP/CD (Virgin)

Van Morrison's 43rd studio album, What's It Gonna Take? The album features 14 new compositions that collectively reflect the artist's indefatigable drive to record and perform live in front of audiences. The album is preceded by Pretending - a gorgeous, restless soul track - and was produced by Van Morrison and was recorded between Real World Studios, Bath Spa Hotel, Richard Dunn's Studio, Culloden Hotel Holywood Studio and Musicbox Studios.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Dirt Does Dylan CD (MRI Associated)

Dirt Does Dylan is a ten-track album highlighting some of the gems from Dylan's vast catalog with the help of three new band members: fiddle specialist Ross Holmes; singer-songwriter and bass player Jim Photoglo (who wrote one of the Dirt Band's biggest hits, "Fishin' in the Dark"); and Dirt Band founder Jeff Hanna's son, the absurdly talented singer and guitarist Jaime Hanna. Produced and recorded by Ray Kennedy at Room & Board Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, Dirt Does Dylan finds a generation-spanning Dirt Band paying an appropriately great tribute to arguably the greatest songwriter of the 20th century with the help of friends like Jason Isbell, The War & Treaty, Steve Earle, and Rosanne Cash, to name a few. [Vinyl due Aug. 26]

Grant-Lee Phillips - All That You Can Dream LP (Yep Roc)

Grant-Lee Phillips' new album, All That You Can Dream, is a turbulent and highly musical rumination that finds the veteran singer-songwriter addressing the strange fragility of life. The collection of songs bears the markings of his prolific output, a melodic prowess and an ear for lyric in everyday conversation. Comparable to the works Low or Duster, Phillips offers a salve to a wounded world, struggling to regain equilibrium.

Pigeon - Yagana LP (Soundway)

Crossing between afro-disco, jazz and no-wave, this debut EP from the 5-piece group features Guinean singer Falle Nioke and members of Sault and Michael Kiwanuka’s band.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Night Gnomes LP (Believe Direct)

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets are staying true to form as one of the most prolific bands out there today, with the announcement they will be releasing their 5th studio album Night Gnomes. [Indie exclusive red natural swirl vinyl.]

Joel Ross - The Parable of the Poet 2xLP (Blue Note)

The suite is performed by a dynamic 8-piece ensemble with Ross joined by Immanuel Wilkins on alto saxophone, Maria Grand on tenor saxophone, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Kalia Vandever on trombone, Sean Mason on piano, Rick Rosato on bass, and Craig Weinrib on drums.

Sagittaire - Lovely Music LP (Org Music)

Lovely Music chronicles the early days of Ivan Mairesse's Sagittaire project, pulling from material written between 2015 and 2017 in San Francisco, where Mairesse recorded the album before moving back to his hometown of Los Angeles. Mairesse takes an introspective approach to songwriting on Lovely Music, juxtaposing dark lyrics with lush pop arrangements and a tender vocal delivery. Originally self-released in 2020 solely in digital form, the album gets a new life with this vinyl release, a joint venture between Org Music and Aquarium Drunkard. While this 2017 recording will be an introduction to Sagittare for most, Mairesse has written and recorded a wealth of new material in the subsequent years, varying in style and genre, so you can expect to hear more from him soon. [Limited edition yellow vinyl.]

Soak - If I Never Know You LP/CD (Rough Trade)

With If I never know you like this again, SOAK's Bridie Monds-Watson (they/them) have shaken the hangover of their starry Mercury-nominated debut Before We Forgot How To Dream and their ambitious follow-up album Grim Town, and the pressures that came with them. Having written much of their new album when time felt at its slowest, Bridie, who has always had an obsessive need to document each chapter of their life, now makes a marvel of the mundane. On If I never..., SOAK’s brilliant melodies are on full display. [Indie exclusive eco vinyl.]

Jo Schornikow - ALTAR LP/CD (Keeled Scales)

Jo Schornikow's new album ALTAR is the perfect counterweight to 2019's Secret Weapon. While that album was bare and scrappy bedroom folk, this new album is a joyful announcement of synthy indie-pop. From Melbourne, Australia, Jo's first job at 17 was as a church organist, a job she's picked up again now in Nashville, where she lives with her husband Matthew Houck of Phosphorescent and their two children. She's played keyboard in that band for over 8 years now, touring heavily all over the world as a full band, and ducking into BBC to record a duo session on their grand piano. Rolling Stone called her last album "excellent," Pitchfork calls her piano playing "sensitive" and "impressionistic," and Gorilla vs. Bear describes her songwriting as "gorgeous and smouldering." But the songs on ALTAR take all of that a step further. There are still those moments of quiet beauty, but they are exploded through with joy. There are windows-down, anthemic pop moments on "Visions" and "Lose Yr Love." Jo Schornikow is a songwriter flexing her craft and sharing songs that have a special charm that allow them to somehow feel honest, open, intimate and funny at the same time. [Clear vinyl pressing. All LPs and CDs at Grimey’s are signed by Jo and are available in the shop and the Grimey's webstore.

Patrick Shiroishi - Hidemi LP (American Dreams)

“The concentration camps that Japanese Americans had to go through has been a major part of my work for the last couple of years,' says Los Angeles-based composer and saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi. Hidemi, a solo multilayered woodwind journey, considers the personal experience of his grandfather after getting out. Across the album's nine tracks, Shiroishi brings the listener through tension and release, showcasing something unfiltered, beautiful, and ultimately hopeful, a testament to perseverance and grace. All of the album was written and performed by Shiroishi, who sang and played alto, baritone, tenor, C melody, and soprano saxophones, stacking up layers of harmonies often each recorded in one take. RIYL: Colin Stetson, Battle Trance, Upsilon Acrux.

Esperanza Spalding - Songwrights Apothecary 2xLP/CD (Concord)

Esperanza Spalding's new album SONGWRIGHTS APOTHECARY LAB explores how songwriters may incorporate knowledge in consultation with practitioners of music therapy, neuroscience, and more to create music that can have a specific effect on the listener. These 12 new songs were created and recorded with different musicians in her traveling lab over the past several months and follow her GRAMMY Award-winning album from 2019, 12 Little Spells.

Jon Spencer & The Hitmakers - Spencer Gets It Lit CD (In The Red)

The incredible, indelible Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, Pussy Galore, Heavy Trash, etc) is back with the incendiary HITmakers-and with his hottest record yet! Spencer Gets It Lit is classic Jon Spencer taken to the extreme-electro-boogie, constructivist art pop, and a psychedelic swamp of industrial sleaze and futurist elegance. It is an epic master work of freak beat from the world's weirdest garage. Across brain-boggling layers of fury, fuzz guitar, and a crash-bang battery of phaser blasts, photon torpedoes, and otherworldly zounds, he frantically spits, croons, rhapsodizes, and seduces. Spencer Gets It Lit is his most complex and groovy record in years, a dark, danceable odyssey-both a studied take-down of the early 21st century, and a celebration of the place where electricity meets the mind. [Vinyl is coming. No specific date yet…]

Harry Styles - Harry’s House LP/CD (Columbia)

Harry's House is the third solo studio album from Grammy award-winning global superstar Harry Styles. The 13-track full-length album was recorded in multiple locations across the UK, Los Angeles, and Tokyo from 2020 to 2021. It was written by Harry alongside frequent collaborators Kid Harpoon, Tyler Johnson, and Mitch Rowland.

Weird Nightmare - Weird Nightmare CD (Sub Pop)

f you're looking for a raw, sugary blast of distorted pop, look no further than Weird Nightmare. The debut album from METZ guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins contains all of his main band's bite with an unexpected, yet totally satisfying, sweetness. Imagine The Amps covering Big Star, or the gloriously hissy miniature epics of classic-era Guided by Voices combined with the bombast of Copper Blue- era Sugar-just tons of red-line distortion cut with the type of tunecraft that thrills the moment it hits your ears. [Vinyl due June 3.]

Reissues, Compilations, Live Recordings & Vault Excavations...

Tony Allen - Secret Agent 2xLP (World Circuit)

His 2009 World Circuit debut, the raw and uncut Secret Agent, has all the ingredients that combine to make Afrobeat so special - fat, full-throated, hard riffing horns; nagging tenor guitars; jazz- and funk-informed saxophone and trumpet work outs; effervescent chicken-shack keyboards; lyrics rich in folk metaphors and proverbs, some of which confront state corruption and oppression (Kuti’s most frequent targets); deep-soul call and response vocals; and, of course, energising everything around it, Allen’s majestic drumming.

Bedroom - Grow LP (Danger Collective)

Bedroom is the recording project of Nashville, Tennessee songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Noah Kittinger. In 2013, at the age of 17, Kittinger wrote and recorded his second full-length album, Grow, in his bedroom at his parents' house in Spring Hill, Tennessee, using only one microphone and the light version of Studio One Pro. The dreamy lo-fi album quickly became an internet sensation, garnering over 43 million streams on Spotify alone. The first pressing of 500 was originally released by Furious Hooves Records, and sold out quickly. Danger Collective Records remastered the album for this second pressing of 1,000, which arrives just in time for Grow's eight year anniversary. Kittinger returned to the Bedroom project a few years ago and has continued making music under that name through his 20s. He is currently finishing up his fourth album. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Chuck Berry - Concerto In B Goode LP (Anagram)

Concerto in B Goode was Chuck Berry's last record for Mercury. Released in the summer of 1969, it was a successful attempt to merge blues, rock n' roll, and psychedelia. Produced by Berry himself, the title track (which refers to his song "Johnny B. Goode") is an extraordinary 18-minute workout in which Berry rocks and rolls through just about every guitar lick he knows. Backed by Billy Peek (organ), Kermit Eugene Cooley (bass), and Dale Gischer (drums).

Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers - Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk 2xLP/CD (Atlantic)

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk is a studio album originally released in 1958 by Atlantic Records. It is a collaboration between the Jazz Messengers, the group led by drummer Art Blakey, and Thelonious Monk on piano. Throughout the preceding decade, on sessions for both Blue Note and Riverside, Blakey had supported Monk on various occasions. Monk returned the favor on this one-off session for Atlantic. Blakey was on the verge of beginning a long-term contract with Blue Note, while Monk was in the middle of his stay on Riverside. One month after these recordings, Monk would begin his summer and autumn residency at the Five Spot on Cooper Square after regaining his cabaret card, without which he had been barred from playing in most of New York City's clubs. Monk's quartet featuring John Coltrane at that residency would bring Monk fame beyond the inner circle of jazz aficionados. Atlantic released this album over a year after it was recorded, thereby capitalizing on Monk's increased visibility.

Johnny Cash - With His Hot & Blue Guitar LP (Org Music)

Johnny Cash "With His Hot and Blue Guitar" is the debut album from the Man in Black, featuring hits like "I Walk The Line" and "Folsom Prison Blues". Released in 1957, it was the first LP ever issued on Sam Phillips' Sun Records label. [Limited edition blue/green vinyl.]

Chimaira - Pass Out of Existence 3xLP (Rhino)

Limited triple vinyl LP pressing includes demos making their debut on a physical format as well as a previously unreleased live show from Orlando, FL in 2002. Pass Out of Existence is the debut studio album by heavy metal band Chimaira, originally released on October 2, 2001. Pass Out of Existence features an altogether different sound when compared to the band's later albums, leaning more towards nu metal rather than the groove metal style featured in later material. It's heavy use of electronics has also been noted. Unlike other Chimaira records, Pass Out of Existence was recorded with seven-string guitars in Dropped A tuning. It emphasizes programming and sampling and, consequently, has been considered less heavy than Chimaira's following albums.

The Clash - Combat Rock + The People’s Hall 2xLP/3xLP (Sony Legacy)

Triple vinyl, double CD expanded reissue of the final album from the classic Clash lineup. Having returned to London following their pivotal 17-show residency at New York’s Bond’s Casino in 1981, the band rehearsed and recorded at The People’s Hall in the squatted Republic of Frestonia near Latimer Road in London and from there they embarked on a tour of the East and South East Asia, during which the album sleeve image was captured by Pennie Smith in Thailand. The tracks on ‘The People’s Hall’ chart the period from what was their last single Radio Clash right up to the release of Combat Rock, including unheard, rare and early versions of tracks.

John Coltrane - My Favorite Things 2xLP/CD (Atlantic)

Released in 1961, My Favorite Things made John Coltrane a star with box-office pull previously reserved for the likes of Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis. The dazzling quartet treatment of the Richard Rodgers hit song features Coltrane on soprano saxophone for the first time on record and became an instant hit single in it's own right. The album also became a major commercial success, receiving the Grammy Hall of Fame award in 1998 and attaining gold record status in 2018. The recently uncovered mono version of this album-once believed to be lost forever-is included in this deluxe package along with the stereo version, both having been mastered from the original tapes. This 60th Anniversary deluxe edition also includes liner notes by award-winning writer Ben Ratliff, as well as photos and Atlantic Records ephemera.

Death Cab For Cutie - Live 2012 2xLP (Barsuk)

Double live album recorded in 2012. [Indie exclusive white with black splatter vinyl.]

Desaparecidos - Read Music/Speak Spanish LP (Saddle Creek)

Limited translucent blue vinyl LP pressing. 2022 marks the 20th Anniversary of Desaparecidos' Read Music/Speak Spanish into a world in which the dread and disenfranchisement detailed throughout the album feel as pertinent today as they did then. The characters and settings may have changed, but the startling narrative has not. In late 2001, Conor Oberst, Denver Dalley, Landon Hedges, Ian McElroy, and Matt Baum spent a week at Presto! Recording Studio in Lincoln, NE recording a punk album. That debut album, released in the post-9/11 fog of early 2002, screamed out observational commentary on urban development, the sacrifice of human value for the dollar bill, and the new American Dream in a way that felt distinctly out of sync with the hyper-patriotic atmosphere of peak G.W. Bush-era America.

Justin Townes Earle - Single Mothers & Absent Fathers 2xLP (Vagrant)

Absent Fathers was recorded alongside Single Mothers as a double album, but as the singer-songwriter began to sequence it, he felt each half needed to make it's own statement and they took on their own identities. Single Mothers was released in September 2014 and, combined with Absent Fathers, perfectly showcases exactly why JTE is considered a forefather of Contemporary Americana. The albums were recorded live with his four-piece touring band with only days of rehearsal leading up to recording to keep the ideas fresh. No overdubs, no other singers, no additional players - just a real, heartfelt performance capturing the moment. In fact, his songs "Picture in a Drawer" and "It's Cold in This House" are only Justin, his guitar and his pedal steel player Paul Niehaus.

Bill Evans - At the Montreux Jazz Festival LP (Anagram)

One of Bill Evans' best live album, At The Montreux Jazz Festival won the 1969 GRAMMY for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. The legendary pianist is backed here by drummer Jack DeJohnette, who had just joined the trio and would gain renown in later years as a member of Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio. Evans' longtime bassist Eddie Gomez is also extensively featured on this iconic and immortal set. Includes new, specially prepared liner notes by Brian Morton.

Nancy Sinatra would change the face of music, fashion and culture. Originally released in 1968, Nancy & Lee arguably represents the pinnacle of the collaborative efforts of one of pop music's most unlikely pairings. Featuring lush orchestral arrangements by Billy Strange, and boasting the talents of famed Los Angeles session musicians The Wrecking Crew, the album's enchanting and enduringly unique musical tableau propelled the album to success and sales of over a million copies worldwide. Few albums have an iconic cover equal in timeless appeal to the music inside, but Nancy & Lee is truly one for the ages. [Metallic gold & clear vinyl. Remastered from the original analog tapes. Mavis Staples & Levon Helm - Carry Me Home CD (Anti-)

Mavis Staples came to Woodstock, NY to perform as part of Helm's renowned Midnight Ramble series, and the ensuing concert-available now for the first time on the rousing new ANTI- Records release 'Carry Me Home'-would mark a personal high watermark for both artists. Captured live in the summer of 2011, 'Carry Me Home' showcases two of the past century's most iconic voices coming together in love and joy, tracing their shared roots and celebrating the enduring power of faith and music. The setlist was righteous that night, mixing vintage gospel and soul with timeless folk and blues, and the performances were loose and playful, fueled by an ecstatic atmosphere that was equal parts family reunion and tent revival. Read between the lines, though, and there's an even more poignant story at play here. Neither Staples nor Helm knew that this would be their last performance together-the collection marks one of Helm's final recordings before his death-and listening back now, a little more than a decade later, tunes like "This May Be The Last Time" and "Farther Along" take on new, bittersweet meaning. The result is an album that's at once a time capsule and a memorial, a blissful homecoming and a fond farewell, a once-in-a-lifetime concert-and friendship-preserved for the ages. [Vinyl due June 17.]

Jan Steele and Janet Sherbourne - Distant Saxophones LP (Community Library)

Jan Steele and Janet Sherbourne gained a reputation for being ambient musicians thanks to their appearance with John Cage on 1976’s Voices And Instruments from Brian Eno’s lofty Obscure series. But in a fascinating catalog spanning more than four decades, these English multi- instrumentalists’ variegated sonic sojourns have proved that label to be far too narrow. In the long-gestating, decades-spanning collection, Distant Saxophones, Steele and Sherbourne flaunt a nuanced vision that encompasses ECM-esque chamber jazz, minimalist modern composition, cinematic soundtracks, and an embryonic, contemplative form of experimental pop.

Sweet - Fox On The Run: Rare Studio Tracks CD (Cleopatra)

Various Artists - The Whole Enchilada: The History of Desert Rock 1976-19943xLP (Lion Productions)

The painstakingly compiled collection is a veritable Tucson musical family tree, leading us from from the mid-1970s through the mid-1990s, from the swoony Bob Meighan Band and the honky tonk of the Dusty Chaps (both whom signed to major labels in the 1970's) to international indie giants Green On Red (Serfers), Howe Gelb and Giant Sandworms, Naked Prey, Al Perry and The Cattle, Desert Rock breakouts The Sidewinders, Yard Trauma, Black Sun Ensemble and many more. With varying styles covering honky tonk, power-pop, country and cow-punk, fusion, punk rock, eclectic and art-damaged, amped up bluegrass, blues and straight up sunbaked rock'n'roll, the album is full of pleasant surprises (unsung country great Ned Sutton, for example), collectible rarities, popular numbers and outright gems you'll wonder how you ever missed. Accompanying the three-record set is a 70-page companion book with rare photos, obscure histories and anecdotes, and dozens of biographical essays by many of the artists themselves and others by named writers, journalists, photographers and deejays, placing the reader centerstage at Desert Rock's halcyon days. [Includes book.]

"This was Widespread Panic un-filtered - or, at least self-filtered - filling in almost every cranny with sound and movement. " - John Bell, Widespread Panic

Neil Young - Citizen Kane Jr. Blues 1974: Live at the Bottom Line LP (Reprise)

Recently released on CD, now on vinyl. A fan favorite bootleg that is usually called "Live at The Bottom Line". A surprise solo acoustic performance following a Ry Cooder show on May 16, 1974. Notably features songs that would be included on "On The Beach". The album title comes from Neil introducing the opening song with that title; a song that later became "Push It Over The End".

Zero - Naught Again CD (Omnivore)

Zero was formed in the early 1980s by guitarist Steve Kimock and drummer Greg Anton after playing with Keith and Donna Godchaux's Heart Of Gold Band with Quicksliver Messenger Service's John Cipollina. Various San Francisco Bay and international artists including Nicky Hopkins (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who) Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship), Vince Welnick (The Tubes, Grateful Dead), John Kahn (Jerry Garcia Band), and more played with the band. It seemed inevitable considering the Zero family tree, that Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter added lyrics to their instrumentals, it was a magic ingredient and Zero took off. After nine albums and over 1,300 shows, Zero was more than a conglomerate of talented musicians, they were a San Francisco institution. Now Zero is releasing a live performance recorded at The Great American Music Hall in 1992. Naught Again is newly mixed by Emmy-nominated Brian Risner from the original multi-track tapes recorded by Dan Healy and Don Pearson (Grateful Dead). An evening from the past ushers in a new era for Zero. Naught Again is a music treasure trove, featuring originals, as well as covers from The Who, Jimi Hendrix, and so much more.
