Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Bachelor - Doomin’ Sun LP/CD (Polyvinyl)

Bachelor, the new project from Melina Duterte (Jay Som) and Ellen Kempner (Palehound), is not a band, it's a friendship. In January of 2020, the duo packed the entirety of Duterte's recording equipment into two cars and headed to a rental house in Topanga, CA where over the course of two weeks, they wrote and recorded their debut album Doomin' Sun. In this space, Kempner and Duterte hybridized their individual songwriting talents, producing a collection that slips between moods with ease and showcases their lyrical prowess.

Lou Barlow - Reason To Live LP (Joyful Noise)

On Baby Blue color vinyl. After decades on the road and the never-ending hustle of life as an artist, Lou Barlow has tapped into a new confidence in the chaos. In 2021, the concept of balance feels particularly intimidating. Now more than ever, it's clear life isn't just leveling out a pair of responsibilities. Instead, we're chasing after a flock of different ideals with a butterfly net. On Barlow's new solo album, Reason to Live, he has come to an understanding of that swirl rather than trying to contain it. As a long-time indie legend, Barlow has found a life akin to a middle-class musician. In recent years, he's moved from Los Angeles back to Massachusetts, where he lives with his wife and three kids. And yet rather than settle into a comfortable malaise or yearn for the open road, Barlow's strengthened urgency finds a way to merge the two instincts. Reason to Live is shambolic and grand yet intimate and doting, warmly acoustic and crackling with grit.

Beachy Head - Beachy Head LP (Graveface)

Debut full length of this shoegaze "supergroup" featuring Christian and Rachel from Slowdive, Matt from The Flaming Lips, Steve from The Soft Cavalry and Ryan Graveface from The Casket Girls/Dreamend. FFO Slowdive, Mojave 3, Monster Movie etc

The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers LP (Carpark)

Limited green vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. Everything changed for Auckland, New Zealand's The Beths when they released their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, in 2018. They quit their jobs, said goodbye to their hometown, and devoted themselves entirely to performing across the globe. Songwriter/lead vocalist Elizabeth Stokes worked on The Beths' second LP, Jump Rope Gazers, in between these intense periods of touring. Like their earlier music, the album tackles themes of anxiety and self-doubt with effervescent power pop choruses and rousing backup vocals, zeroing in on the communality and catharsis that can come from sharing stressful situations with some of your best friends. Their most emotive and heartfelt work to date, Jump Rope Gazers stares down all the hard parts of living in communion with other people, even at a distance, while celebrating the ferocious joy that makes it all worth it.

Black Midi - Cavalcade LP/Pic-disc/CD (Rough Trade)**

Black Midi's follow-up to Schlagenheim is a dynamic, hellacious, inventive success. Cavalcade, their second studio album for Rough Trade, scales beautiful new heights, reaching ever upwards from an already lofty base of early achievements. [Gatefold vinyl and limited edition picture disc are available.]

**One copy of Cavalcade available somewhere in the US at a record retailer will include a GOLDEN TICKET that allows the winner to pick amongst three awesome black midi prizes, so make sure to check your copy to see if you're the winner. Full contest information and details are available here.

Blackberry Smoke - You Hear Georgia LP/CD (3 Legged Records)

Hailed as "the reigning heavyweight champions of Southern rock" (No Depression), Atlanta-based quintet Blackberry Smoke celebrates their 20th anniversary with a magnificent tribute to their home: You Hear Georgia. Produced by Dave Cobb (John Prine, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson), the upcoming album is inspired by and a celebration of the South and all it has to offer. In true Blackberry Smoke fashion, the band masterfully weaves through genre, with everything from Southern Rock anthems about overcoming preconceived notions to life lessons wrapped in heartfelt Americana. And they bring a few friends along for the ride, with guest features from Jamey Johnson and Warren Hayes (The Allman Brothers Band, Gov't Mule). [Indie exclusive teal color vinyl.]

CAAMP - Live From Newport Music Hall LP (Mom+Pop)

Vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. The Live from Newport Music Hall EP was recorded during an intimate tour in their home state of Ohio, the three days leading into New Year's Eve of last year. The five songs they selected for the EP capture the infectious energy of their live show. Only a limited number of fans were in attendance at those small shows, so we are so excited they are now sharing that experience with the world.

Chase Atlantic - Beauty In Death LP (Fearless)

Limited black and swirl colored vinyl LP pressing. Amassing over 350 million streams domestically and receiving acclaim from Billboard, OnesToWatch, mxdwn, PopCrush, Alternative Press, Substream Magazine, and Rock Sound of which they graced the cover, this Australia-born and Los Angeles-based trio boldly push forward again on their debut for Fearless Records.

Daniel Davies - Spies LP (Sacred Bones)

Have you ever felt like you're being watched? Have you felt unseen eyes staring at you, monitoring your every move? Composer and guitarist Daniel Davies reflects on this familiar paranoia on his new EP, Spies. Across it's five stirringly atmospher- ic tracks, the frequent John Carpenter collaborator evokes the tingle you get on the back of your neck when you sense you're under surveillance - a feeling some psychologists have dubbed the "psychic staring effect."

Dispatch - Break Our Fall 2xLP (Bomber Records)

New release from the celebrated roots rock band. Marking the band's eighth studio release, the songs on this record speak not only to Chadwick Stokes' and Brad Corrigan's personal evolution, but to human nature itself, charting a course from denial and resistance to growth and acceptance through deep introspection and empathetic character studies. For Stokes and Corrigan, the only constant these past few years has been change - marriage, birth, death, departure - add to that an exceedingly tense political climate, long-overdue reckonings on racial justice/gender equality and a runaway global pandemic and you've got Break Our Fall, an album that enriches Dispatch's distinguished legacy, on which the depth and breadth of the band's stunning songwriting is displayed in full force.

Electric Looking Glass - Somewhere Flowers Grow LP (We Are Busy Bodies)

Electric Looking Glass are a modern day baroque pop group from Los Angeles, CA. Electric Looking Glass unabashedly creates sugar-coated whimsical pop with all the bells and whistles; chiming guitars, dreamy mellotron, bouncy harpsichord and three part harmonies. You might mistake them at first for an obscure Apple Records signing but Electric Looking Glass insists they are forward thinking tomorrow-people making music for NOW! Boasting multiple vocalists, multi-instrumentalists and songwriters, ELG is a collaborative effort between four kindred spirits; Arash Mafi, Brent Randall, Johnny Toomey and Danny Winebarger. Self-producing in their own analog wonderland, the lads pay loving homage to the kaleidoscope pop of yesteryear with impressive attention to detail in both their records and smile-inducing Monkees-esque music videos.

David Gray - Skellig 2xLP (Laugh A Minute Records)

12th studio album from singer/songwriter David Gray. His second LP to be produced by Ben de Vries, this thirteen-track album departs from the shimmering electronics of 2019's Gold In A Brass Age and embarks on a sparser, communal soundscape with the atmospheric songs centering themselves around six-part vocals with Gray trading his signature gravel for a softer tone. Recorded prior to the pandemic, the album sessions took place at Edwyn Collins' Helmsdale studio on the Sutherland coast, with de Vries and Gray finessing the mix throughout lockdown.

Guedra Guedra - Vexillology LP (On the Corner Records)

Moroccan producer Guedra Guedra presents his debut album Vexillology, an elevation of tribal consciousness and futurism from underground musical universes. The album offers listeners an immersive experience made from hypnotic and rhythmic arrangements, rooted in ancient culture but also drawing from contemporary underground dancefloor innovations. Referring as much to Sub-Saharan as to North African cultures, Guedra Guedra presents a synthesis of his pan-African appreciation and a full immersion into the traditional rhythms of these lands, especially within the Berber culture. The album is built upon a multitude of field recordings capturing live and "in the moment" cultural happenings, encountered in everyday life, at tribal festivities and also on his travels.

Hide - Interior Terror LP (Dais)

Hide's third album, Interior Terror further abandons traditional concepts of song structure in favor of splintered rhythms and fevered, immediate release. Expanding on previous themes of autonomy and empowerment, Interior Terror addresses and questions the corporeal and immaterial body in a physical and metaphysical sense. Turning to the dread inside, reflecting on the world around us, Hide gives voice to the power of destruction as a catalyst for hope, and to the collective experiences of those who've come before us as a wellspring of our own power. Raw vocal delivery of mantra-like prose issued forth yields a raging, plaintive wail that lulls, mocks, questions, proclaims and decries. A dearth of collected field recordings give way to more fluid arrangements while retaining a scathing urgency. The result is minimal, spacious, and jarring; a distant knocking grown into the pulse of a hypnotic dirge, drones emerge from shards of decomposed sound, bending, seething their way through your body. [Limited edition indie exclusive bile color vinyl.]

Vijay Iyer - UnEasy 2xLP (ECM)

Vijay Iyer presents a powerful new trio, in which he is joined by 2 key figures in creative music, Tyshawn Sorey & Linda May Han Oh. "We have an energy together that is very distinct. It has a different kind of propulsion, a different impulse and a different spectrum of colours". Repertoire on UnEasy, recorded at Oktaven Audio Studio in Mount Vernon, NY in December 2019, includes Iyer originals written over 20 years, plus Gerri Allen's "Drummer's Song" and Cole Porter's "Night and Day."

Jim Jones / Harry Fraud - The Fraud Department CD (The Fraud Department)

Two of the hardest working veterans in the game, legendary MC Jim Jones and cult favorite producer Harry Fraud, team up for the new project, The Fraud Department. Pairing Jones' iconic delivery with Fraud's knack for cloud-like production, The Fraud Department elevates the duo's best attributes and showcases how their chemistry is undeniable. The album features appearances from Belly, Dave East, Trav, French Montana, Curren$y, Jay Worthy, Conway the Machine, Marc Scibilia, Big Body Bes, Maino, and Kenny Sway.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - L.W. LP/CD (ATO)

Serving as both a standalone work and a companion piece to 2020 predecessor K.G., L.W. sees the Melbourne-based innovators produce a truly original album. As the band enter their second decade, the creative future of this most 21st century of outfits only promises to be bolder, madder and more imaginative than ever. [Silver anvil color vinyl.]

Emily Kinney - The Supporting Character LP (Jullian Records)

Emily Kinney, best known for her roles in The Walking Dead, Masters of Sex, and Ten Days in The Valley releases the new full-length album, The Supporting Character. Produced by Benjamin Greenspan, it touches on themes of heartbreak, loss, family history, creativity and personal growth, and finds Kinney tackling difficult subjects with her trademark lyrical honesty. The album's first single, "Fifteen Minutes," is a love-turned-breakup song Kinney wrote for her boyfriend at the time that explains how she would easily trade the time she spent becoming successful for more time with him.

KMRU - Logue LP (Injazero)

Nairobi-based electronic musician/sound-artist Joseph Kamaru (KMRU) signs to Injazero for the release of his beautiful compendium album Logue, comprising works from his past years of self-releasing. KMRU is uniquely positioned between the rarely-married cultures of ambient and African musics, entwining his compositions with field recordings from his native Kenya and the surrounding countries of East Africa. Though the deep, tectonic slowness of his music can be compared to the work of Lawrence English, William Basinski, Stars of the Lid, Kamaru's core culture shines through in a pure and singular way. Found within Logue's pieces are radiant melodic antiphony commonplace in African music, and huge, spacious drones that reveal his love for ambient soundscapes, held effortlessly together by field recordings and analog synthesis.

Koreless - White Picket Fence / Joy Squad 12” (Young Turks)

The debut release by Koreless is a sonic odyssey through electronica and into a wide world of modern classical atmospherics. At the centre of Agor are two stunning impasses. This limited 12” hosts ‘White Picket Fence’ and ‘Joy Squad’, tracks linked by a shared pathfinding sensibility. The former lightly traces a melodic thread with an uncanny operetta vocal, as a steady groundswell of digitised harpsichords and electronic bass crafts a moody scene akin to some of Vessel's work. Meanwhile, the latter takes the abstracted club pieces and sets them to propulsive 2-step skitters, as a different vocal style twitches and trips along an ungraspable rhythm section.

L’Orange & Namir Blade - Imaginary Everything CD (Mello Music)

Namir Blade controls the clouds and the concrete. With the blink of a synapse, his imagination conjures elaborate visions of valleys of death, bad Tijuana dreams, and shotgun raids. In the next breath, he's blowing off texts, rolling out of bed around noon, and crooning falsetto pleas about his willingness to change. The Nashville's latest, Imaginary Everything is a work of teleportation and twisted fantasy, a wig-flipping blast of surrealism and slang editorials. It is a journey and experience. A collaboration with the otherworldly producer, L'Orange.

kd lang - Makeover LP/CD (Nonesuch)

2021 remix album from the singer/songwriter. Includes dance remixes of some of her best-loved songs including "Sexuality," "Miss Chatelaine," "Theme from The Valley of the Dolls," "Summerfling," and the #1 dance chart hits "Lifted By Love" and "If I Were You." [Limited edition tourquoise color vinyl.]

Madison Beer - Life Support LP (Epic)

Life Support is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Madison Beer. Beer herself co-wrote and co-produced all seventeen tracks on the album.

Shannon McNally - The Waylon Sessions LP (Compass Records)

Recorded with an all-star band and featuring special guests like Jessi Colter, Buddy Miller, Rodney Crowell, and Lukas Nelson, Shannon McNally's extraordinary collection, The Waylon Sessions, isn't so much a tribute to Waylon Jennings as it is a recontextualization: a nuanced, feminine rendering of a catalog long considered a bastion of hetero-masculinity. That's not to say McNally has a softer, gentler take on the songs of Jennings and his outlaw compatriots here; in fact, just the opposite. Over and over again, she manages to locate a smoldering intensity - a searing hurt buried deep within the music's deceptively simple poetry - and she hones in on it with a surgical precision. McNally doesn't swap pronouns or couch her delivery with a wink; she simply plays it straight, singing her truth as a divorced single mother in her 40's in all it's beauty, pain, and power. The result is that rare covers record that furthers our understanding of the originals, an album of classics that challenges our perceptions and assumptions about just what made them classics in the first place.

Moby - Reprise 2xLP/CD (Deutsche Grammophon)

Moby's eclectic career has cast him in the roles of electronic dance music pioneer, singer/songwriter, producer, activist, and restaurateur, but for his latest venture he presents his music in a whole new light. Together with Deutsche Grammophon, he is releasing an album of his best-known tracks in stunning new arrangements for classical instruments - featuring Moby himself and a stellar lineup of collaborators from across the musical spectrum.

Mustafa - When Smoke Rises LP/CD (Regent Park Songs)

It explores the invisible threads that bind us all, spiritually, emotionally, and artistically. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Playboi Carti - Whole Lotta Red 2xLP (Interscope)

It has clocked a staggering 1.6 Billion streams for it's tracks to date.

Max Richter - Voices 2 2xLP (Decca)

Described by Max Richter as "a place to think," Voices was a response to our tempestuous political climate and the enduring need for compassion. Voices 2 develops this principle and opens up a meditative, musical space in which to pause, reflect, hope, and act. Richter, the pioneering artist behind the landmark composition Sleep, is recognized globally as one of the most important composers of the 21st Century.

Porter Robinson - Nurture 2xLP (Mom+Pop)

Nurture is the second studio album by American electronic music producer Porter Robinson. Nurture is an album about hope, overcoming despair, faithfully pursuing a sense of purpose, and trying to prove that it's worthwhile to try.

Sabreen - Death of the Prophet LP (Akuphone)

"Those awaiting", the name chosen by the musicians of Sabreen, still rings true forty years after the foundation of this group in Jerusalem. Voice of the hopes as well as the anger of the Palestinian youth, this group has recorded four self-produced albums. With the weapons of poetry, they embody the voices of resistance against the occupation but also the desire for emancipation from tradition. Emblematic of this state of mind, their second album Death Of The Prophet was released at the beginning of the first intifada. It will be the soundtrack, drawing its inspiration from the sources of classical Arabic music and popular folklore while providing the tuning fork of the future generations. Includes 10" booklet with extended liner notes by Jacques Denis and rare photos.

Scotch Rolex - Tewari LP (Hakuna Kulala)

Veteran Japanese producer Shigeru Ishihara (aka DJ Scotch Egg) has been assembling serrated, genre-busting ear bleeders for almost two decades, and arrives to the Hakuna Kulala stable with a crucial new project: Scotch Rolex, named after the popular Ugandan street food. On "Tewari" the Berlin-based noisemaker melts his breakcore, gabber and chiptune background into a fresh palette of influences, with help from collaborators MC Yallah, DUMA's Lord Spikeheart, Swordman Kitala, Chrisman and Don Zilla.

Smith & Burrows - Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough LP (Pias America)

Editors frontman and multi-instrumentalist Tom Smith, and the similarly multi-facetted musician and songwriter Andy Burrows, release their second full length collaboration as Smith & Burrows. Celebrated artists in their own right, and friends for the past fifteen years, the pair have finally managed to coordinate diaries. Almost a decade on from their 2011 debut, Funny Looking Angels, they have emerged with Only Smith & Burrows Is Good Enough. As songwriters, both Tom and Andy have scored some big hits. The album is a collaborative writing experience and the pair share vocal duties across it's tracks from the propulsive power-pop of "All The Best Moves," to the calypso-tinged virtuosity of "Buccaneer Rum Jum" and the engaging traces of OMD amidst "Bottle Tops." The songs were nurtured and written in the UK, but recorded in Nashville with the Grammy Award winning producer Jacquire King (Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon, Norah Jones). The record is on occasion, tongue-in-cheek while at other times depicts the advancing of age and family life, changed priorities, and all that it entails.

Alex Somers - Siblings 2xLP (Krunk)
Alex Somers - Siblings 2 2xLP (Krunk)

Musician, composer, producer and visual artist Alex Somers releases his debut album Siblings in tandem with his other debut album Siblings 2. Two double albums housed in a beautiful single sleeves Siblings and Siblings 2 have been a long time coming, being written between 2014-2016. Siblings and Siblings 2 have 13 hauntingly beautiful, impressionistic tracks apiece, the records draw on the composer's main musical interests - film composition, ambient, post-classical, post-rock and electronica - combining grandeur and intimacy, broad brushstrokes and subtle detail, minimalism and maximalism. A known composer Somers has worked on an already prolific amount of film and TV music, such as Captain Fantastic, Honey Boy, Here We Are: Notes For Living On Planet Earth, Audrey, Taylor Swift's Miss Americana and (with Sigur Rós) the Black Mirror episode Hang The DJ on Netflix. In parallel, Somers built a studio where he recorded the likes of Sigur Rós, Jónsi, Julianna Bardwick, Death Vessel and Damien Rice, and continued with his own recordings. Remarkably, given his vast experience, Siblings and Siblings 2 are the first albums under his own name.

Garrison Starr - Girl I Used To Be LP (Garrison Starr)

"Since recording her first album in 1993, Garrison Starr has continued to blend folk-rock, Americana and singer-songwriter influences with incredible deftness and to compelling effect. On Garrison Starr's new album, Girl I Used To Be, Starr stays unwaveringly true to the emotional landscape she has explored throughout her career, confronting the most confessional, introspective and vulnerable aspects of herself and her experience." - Rock Cellar Magazine

Taylor Swift - Evermore 2xLP (Republic)
Taylor Swift - Evermore signed CD (Republic)

Taylor Swift's ninth studio album, Evermore, is Folklore's sister record. These songs were created with Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB and Justin Vernon. Texas - Hi LP (BMG)

Texas make a very welcome return with their exhilarating tenth album Hi, flexing their rock soul muscle with twelve tracks that easily rank amongst the best of their stellar career. Scotland's finest, Texas is a band in their prime, fueled by the swagger of the title track collaboration with the Wu-Tang Clan. It finds a soulful Sharleen Spiteri nestled next to boisterous raps from RZA and Ghostface Killah over a cinematic backdrop of lush beats and acoustic guitar. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Tomemitsu - Sun LP (Friends of Friends)

Sun, the title of Martin Roark’snew album, is probably the best word to describe the Los Angeles-based artist’s release. Working under the moniker of Tomemitsu, Roark is a lo-fi and indie pop guru, whose music encapsulates those genres, with a twist of folk and synth-pop. On his latest effort, Roark presents more than a handful of summery and gentle tracks, which are as pleasant to listen to the first time you hear them, as any of your old favourites. Sun, to put it simply, is just an enjoyable album that offers catchy melodies, elegant arrangements and interesting collaborations in a humble and laid-back manner.

Reissues, Compilations, Live Recordings & Vault Excavations

Animal Collective - Sung Tongs 2LP (Domino Recording Co)

Reissue of the 2004 album. In their Sung Tongs incarnation, Animal Collective is once again the duo of Avey Tare and Panda Bear, and this is perhaps their most perfect, accessible work to date, a luscious flowering and flowing together of deeply catchy, hook-filled songs and intricately textured arrangements. Built around the core elements of Avey and Panda’s gorgeous vocal harmonies and twin acoustic guitar strumming, the album has been lovingly worked through the studio to provide a rich and fully expansive mix of stunning sonic depth, detail and placement.

Animal Collective - Feels LP (Domino Recording Co)

Reissue of the band's seventh album, originally released in 2005. Where Sung Tongs was largely acoustic-based and the product of just two members of the Collective (Avey Tare and Panda), Feels is in contrast a full group effort (also including Geologist and Deakin). Moving further away from the suggestion of folkish affinities, it is electrified, rhythmically more urgent, and overall a considerably denser work. Those sweet melodies and big catchy hooks remain intact, and the songwriting is once again bold, brave and adventurous, as ever indelibly stamped with their own unique personality. Punchy, infectious, immensely rich and varied.

David Bowie - The Width Of A Circle 2xCD (Parlophone)
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World pic-disc LP (Parlophone)

50th anniversary of the original U.K. release of The Man Who Sold The World David Bowie’s landmark entry into the 1970s. The album not only began the collaboration with guitarist Mick Ronson that would continue with such Bowie classics as Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, it kicked off a 10-year run of indispensable albums stretching through 1980’s Scary Monsters. Taking its name from the album’s opening track, which was named after a painting by Bowie’s friend George Underwood, the new two-CD set The Width Of A Circle acts as a complementary piece to that album. Its 21 tracks feature non-album singles, a BBC In Concert l session, music for a TV play and further Visconti remixes wrapping up David’s recordings from 1970 and revealing the first sonic steps toward Hunky Dory. [Vinyl reissue is a picture disc.]

Fountains Of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers 2xLP (Real Gone Music)

It's the most popular album by one of the greatest power pop bands of all time... and it's never seen a widespread vinyl release. Welcome Interstate Managers was hailed a classic from the day it came out in 2003, and featured Fountains of Wayne's biggest hit with "Stacy's Mom." The song craft and lyrical wit of Chris Collingwood and the late, great Adam Schlesinger have never been sharper; there's not a bad song on this record and lot of them (e.g. "Bright Future in Sales;" "Hackensack") rise to the same lofty perch as "Stacy's Mom.". Also included as a bonus track: the non-LP b-side to the 'Stacy's Mom' single, 'Elevator Up!' One of the 21st century's greatest rock albums. [Double red color vinyl LP pressing housed inside a gatefold jacket with two printed inner sleeves featuring lyrics.]

Green Day - Nimrod LP (Reprise)

Nimrod is the fifth studio album by rock band Green Day, originally released on October 14, 1997. The band began work on the album in the wake of the cancellation of a European tour after the release of their previous album, Insomniac. Recorded at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles, the album was written with the intent of creating a set of standalone songs as opposed to a cohesive album. Retrospectively, Nimrod is noted for it's musical diversity and experimentation, containing elements of folk, surf rock, and ska. Lyrical themes discussed include maturity, personal reflection, and fatherhood.

Gwar - The Disc With No Name pic-disc LP (Pit Records)

“The Disc With No Name” features unplugged versions of four GWAR classics, completely reimagined and rearranged with acoustic instruments. The idea to release the EP came during last year’s quarantine following the band’s heart wrenching, emotional and ridiculous acoustic performance for The A.V. Club during their quarantine sessions. With this release, the band looks back wistfully on eons of murderous rock and roll and the lonesome time of the great GWARANTINE of 2020.

PJ Harvey - The Peel Sessions 1991-2004 LP (Island)

Reissue on vinyl of the 2006 collection of PJ Harvey sessions with the late BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, spanning recordings from the start of her career in 1991 up to 2004. Originally released two years after Peel's death in 2004, the record came with a tribute message from Harvey in the liner notes which read, "More than I would ever care to admit for fear of embarrassment to both sides, but I sought his approval always. It mattered. Every Peel Session I did, I did for him. It is with much love that I chose these songs, in his memory. A way of saying 'Thank You,' once more. Thank You, John." Reissue is faithful to the original recording and package, with cutting by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering under the guidance of longtime PJ Harvey producer John Parish.

Nat Turner Rebellion - Laugh To Keep From Crying LP (Chrysalis)

Nat Turner Rebellion, the Philadelphia soul-music group release their long-awaited debut album, originally signed to local label Philly Groove Records, the group is made up of Joe Jefferson (who sadly passed away in July 2020), Major Harris, Ron Harper, and Bill Spratley - pioneers of the Philly Soul and protest music movements. For their debut track, 'Tribute To A Slave', NTR channeled the revolutionary spirit of the infamous 1831 uprising, after which the group derived their name. Starting in 1969, NTR wrote and recorded dozens of tracks with only a handful of singles released. Tensions with then-Philly Groove Records label head Stan Watson sidelined the project and the tapes went unheard for decades. Then, in 2012 when Reservoir Media acquired Philly Groove Records, they discovered the tapes in Sigma Sound Studios archive. Jefferson, lone-surviving NTR member, gave his blessing for the 14-track collection to finally be released. The themes they wrote about are still as relevant today as they were in 1969.

Open Mike Eagle - Brick Body Kids Still Daydream LP (Mello Music)

With the first song of his 2014 masterpiece, Dark Comedy, Open Mike Eagle reintroduced himself by defining his style: "I'm bad at sarcasm so I work in absurdity." On that album, Mike deconstructed our overstimulated and over-surveilled society with ease and caustic wit. But what do you do when the world warps and bends into a shape so absurd that it can no longer be exaggerated? 2017's Brick Body Kids Still Daydream is a searingly political record for systolic political times. It chronicles the life cycle of the Robert Taylor Homes, a housing project on the South side of Chicago that was demolished completely over ten years ago. Families that had lived under the same roof for three generations were forced to scatter, condemned by bureaucrats and faceless cranes and public indifference. Mike Eagle brings the Robert Taylor Homes back to life - literally, with arms and eyes and a head like the dome of a stadium - and fights until the last brick is made to crumble.
