Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

American Aquarium – Chicamacomico CD (Losing Side)

“Chicamacomico is a record about loss. Over a six-month span at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, I lost my grandmother, my mother and watched as the world fell into a 2+ year pandemic that decimated businesses, relationships, and dreams. This is a record about dealing with those losses. My hope is these songs serve a salve for anyone else experiencing loss. A reminder that you are not the only one that lost a friend this year, or a parent, or a loved one. There's a special kind of hope that comes from that realization. I am not alone. We enlisted Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Nathaniel Ratliffe, Waxahatchee) to produce the record and traveled to Sonic Ranch, a world-renowned recording complex tucked in the middle of a 1,700-acre pecan orchard, in the Texas border town of Tornillo. Over the course of ten days, we watched these songs go from simple folk ruminations into fully formed band arrangements.” – BJ Barham [Vinyl edition – including an indie store exclusive pressing – due August 19.]

American Football – Rare Symmetry b/w Fade Into You 10”+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

After quietly releasing their self-titled debut album in 1999 while still in college, American Football disbanded after the album's release to focus on other projects, only to reunite 15 years later to a fanbase that had been consistently growing throughout the underground / emo scene. The album later appeared on Rolling Stone's "40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time" list at #6, with Pitchfork giving its deluxe reissue the "Best New Reissue" title, calling it the "most influential album in the genre." The reunion was followed by two more self-titled full-length albums (LP2 and LP3), collaborations with the likes of Paramore's Hayley Williams, San Holo, boyband and others, as well as numerous sold-out world tours. On the Rare Symmetry / Fade Into You 10" single, American Football (Mike Kinsella, Nate Kinsella, Steve Holmes) expand on the dense beauty of LP3 with "Rare Symmetry", incorporating chiming vibraphones, intricate picking patterns, and devastating lyrics. The B-side is a cover of the Mazzy Star classic “Fade Into You”. [Limited edition pink vinyl.]

Michaela Anne – Oh To Be That Free CD/LP (Yep Roc)

Nashville, TN based songwriter Michaela Anne returns with her new album Oh To Be That Free, the follow up to her 2019 Yep Roc debut Desert Dove. “I wrote this collection of songs as a simultaneous reckoning and healing," says Michaela Anne. "They came after a period in my life of self-sabotage and unraveling by my own doing. But during the making of this record, life altering experiences occurred and a deeper layer of meaning for these songs appeared. Between the time we started to record and the very final mastering, I conceived, grew, and birthed my first child. In the middle of this pregnancy, and the middle of making this record, my mother suffered a devastating and debilitating hemorrhagic stroke. These songs became healers for me as though I had written them for my future self." [Limited-edition clear vinyl. Available in the shop and in the Grimey’s webstore.]

As It Is – I Went To Hell And Back LP (Fearless)

Released in February on CD – now available on pink color vinyl. Inspired by the iconic emo bands of the early 2000s, As It Is release I Went To Hell And Back. The song "I Miss 2003" contains lyrics from scene favorites like My Chemical Romance, Mayday Parade, The All-American Rejects - and callbacks to bands like New Found Glory and Good Charlotte. The track offers a nostalgic, upbeat break from the rest of the heavy (and at times bleak) theme of the album.

Bedouine – Waysides CD/LP (Figure 8 Media Inc.)

Waysides is the third collection of Bedouine songs. Comprised of older material and a cover, she's playfully dubbed it "LP 2.5." It summarizes her creative headspace over the last year and a half, tying together many songwriting threads that act as a prologue of sorts. "The luxury of time afforded this whole album," she explained. "It feels like going back in time, uncovering little capsules. I would never have gotten to do this if I didn't have this abundance of time at home. It was my silver lining in this mess and gave me purpose."

Blanck Mass – Ted K (Original Motion Picture Score) CD/LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)

Recording during lockdown at his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, Blanck Mass's Ben Power was in the perfect setting for a musical piece intended to capture the isolation central to serial mail bomber Ted Kaczynski's story. Power was also working with a director in a time zone 10 hours behind and thus many sessions required working in the middle of the night, which added a fitting intensity to the composition process. [Limited-edition opaque red vinyl.]

Solemn Brigham – South Sinner Street LP (Mello Music Group)

Across it's 14 songs, South Sinner Street argues for Solemn Brigham as one of the most exciting artists in underground hip-hop, a technical virtuoso who also happens to be one of the genre's most surprising, most deeply personal songwriters. The album evokes the feeling of climbing onto a house's roof to survey the nearly burning city around you, with all the peril that entails - but also all the possibility. [Indie exclusive color vinyl.]

Steve Dawson – Gone, Long Gone LP (Black Hen)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Steve Dawson has always been hard to pin down. A guitarist, a composer, a sought-after musical enabler, and sideman? Of course, he's all those things and more, but none of those descriptions really do the seven-time Juno Award-winning musician justice. Since moving to Nashville in 2013, it's been full tilt for the Vancouver native. Gone, Long Gone reflects Dawson’s mastery of songcraft and features brilliant instrumental performances from some of the finest players in roots music.

Deserta – Every Moment, Everything You Need LP (Felte)

Recently release on CD – now available on blue color vinyl. For Matthew Doty, Deserta has always been about exploring a sonic universe that allows him to express a kaleidoscope of emotions, without having to say much at all. Through a patchwork of reverb-tinged textures - drone guitars, lingering synths and driving percussion - the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaves together stories of care, frustration and catharsis that ultimately stretch to a gentle resolve. On new album Every Moment, Everything You Need, Doty chronicles the kind of year we all fear, full of uncertainty, tension, and sustained pressure, and transforms it into a celebration of perseverance. It's an essential reminder that we have the power to shape the stories we tell.

The Doobie Brothers – Liberté LP (Island)

Released last October on CD – now available on vinyl. Produced/co-written by John Shanks (Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus,) Liberté contains 12 new tracks.

George Ezra – Gold Rush Kid CD/LP (Columbia)

Gold Rush Kid is the highly anticipated new album from singer-songwriter George Ezra. This 12-track album was announced with the release of the first single and video, “Anyone For You”. In speaking about the lead single, George says: “‘Anyone For You’ is a patchwork of lyric ideas found in old notebooks and chance moments shared between musicians in the studio. It’s joyous and infectious, and I can’t help but smile every time I sing it.”

FKJ – Vincen CD/2xLP (Mom + Pop Music)

Second album from artist/producer and multi-instrumentalist French Kiwi Juice (FKJ). Includes the single “Greener”, a collaboration featuring legendary guitarist Carlos Santana. [Limited edition ‘black ice’ vinyl.]

Ghost Power – Ghost Power CD/LP (Duophonic Super 45s)

Ghost Power is Jeremy Novak [Dymaxion] and Timothy Gane (Stereolab, Cavern Of Anti-Matter and Turn On). Duophonic Super 45s has previously released music by both artists - Novak via a Dymaxion compilation album and a 7", Gane via various Stereolab, Cavern Of Anti-Matter and Turn On releases. Having previously released a limited edition 7" in 2020, Ghost Power by Ghost Power brings the two musicians together for a full-length album. The tracks were recorded in Berlin and New York, both remotely and with Novak and Gane working together in each city.

Laura Jane Grace – At War With The Silverfish 10”+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

Clear vinyl pressing. Half recorded at Grace's TinyQuietStudio in Chicago and half recorded at Electric Eel in St. Louis, and mixed by her Devouring Mothers bandmate Marc Hudson, At War With The Silverfish finds Grace in a range of stripped-back, poignant modes that amount to an honest and holistic account of our shared humanity. Unafraid to spotlight open wounds and tangled feelings, Grace conveys the distinctive pluck that has defined her work with Against Me! and The Devouring Mothers, but with the intimate energy of home recording with an acoustic guitar. The album is not a clarion call, but a tender invitation. It is a necessary capsule of a woman's artistic pulse; love, longing and loneliness told in affecting turns of phrase.

Heart Attack – Negative Sun CD (Atomic Fire)

A perfect amalgamation of roaring modern thrash metal and epic melodies. Heart Attack is for Gojira, Machine Head, and early Metallica fans searching for the definite riff that will help them drive for a long ride under the sun.

Grace Ives – Janky Star CD (Harvest)

Janky Star is the new album from pop-polymath Grace Ives, following 2019's critically acclaimed debut, 2nd. The 10 tracks are full of punchy synths and unconventional rhythms, but she uses the quiet spaces in between to honestly reflect on her ongoing struggle to find stability and happiness. Touching on sobriety, overdoses, and the desire to escape the realities of modern life, Janky Star focuses on the rewards of slowing down and finally finding a home for herself in the ever-shifting world. [Vinyl edition due November 11.]

Jillian Jacqueline – Honestly CD (Jillian Jacqueline)

Critically acclaimed artist Jillian Jacqueline releases her 11-song debut album, Honestly. Hailed for her "blatant honesty with unshakable optimism" (Billboard), Jacqueline's debut is the follow-up to her prior hits "God Bless This Mess", "Hate Me", and "Reasons", and includes emotionally potent duets with Nashville notables Charlie Worsham ("The Ocean") and TJ Osborne ("Better with a Broken Heart").

Vance Joy – In Our Own Sweet Time CD (Atlatnic)

Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Vance Joy releases his highly anticipated third studio album, In Our Own Sweet Time. The eagerly awaited new album includes collaborations with hitmakers such as Joel Little (Lorde, Taylor Swift), Dan Wilson (Adele, Leon Bridges), Take a Day Trip (Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X) and more.

Joyce Manor – 40oz. To Fresno CD/LP+MP3 (Epitaph)

40oz. To Fresno is the highly anticipated sixth studio album by Joyce Manor. Produced by Rob Schnapf, this nine-song album is an honest, hard-hitting, post-emo, power pop masterpiece packed with the elevated writing and earnest delivery Joyce Manor is loved for. [Indie store exclusive pink vinyl.]

Judah & The Lion – Revival CD (Judah & The Lion)

Revival is a collection of songs that speaks to the band's journey back to innocence and hope through reclamation. Recorded in Asheville, NC, the album is an attempt to recapture the innocence of their youth, embracing the sadness and loss of the last few years and welcoming the future with a renewed energy and spirit that harkens back to their earliest days. [Vinyl edition TBD.]

Kardashev – Liminal Rite CD/LP (Metal Blade)

Kardashev (Car-duh-shev) is a self-described "deathgaze" group blending themes of death metal with shoegaze. Their mission statement could be described as, "Attempting to create the most beautiful, heavy music through themes of love, loss and altruism in the Metal spectrum." Much of their content is written about science, space, and the human condition. [Limited edition rose color vinyl.]

Motionless In White – Scoring The End Of The World CD (Roadrunner)

“Vocalist Chris Motionless elaborated on the ambitious new project Scoring The End Of The World stating, "this is my love letter to you, our fans, for everything you have done for me over the course of some of the most mentally taxing few years I've had to go through. At times where I felt like my world was ending, as well as the world around us, it was always in my mind that I was able to turn to the special relationship we have created together for help, and I cannot thank you enough for that. Outside of my own personal experiences, it has been equally as fulfilling to me to see that in the face of tireless forces that continue to try and perpetuate hatred and negativity towards so many of us coexisting on this planet, we have all stood together to resist and fight back knowing that love and compassion will always prevail. We ARE the resistance. We ARE Cyberhex. I love you. Thank you."

Nectar - No Shadow LP (Lauren Records)

No Shadow follows up Nectar’s 2018 full-length debut Knocking at the Door with ten tracks drawing from power pop and 90s alternative touchstones, co-produced by frontperson Kamila Glowacki and Champaign-based composer and producer Andrew M Rodriguez. Recorded over the course of a year, No Shadow finds Glowacki at her most self-assured as a songwriter and vocalist. No Shadow’s title references the dual concepts of certainty and enlightenment. Evoking Plato’s allegory of the cave, Glowacki describes turning to face the sun and rejecting the false illusion of reality created by the darkness of depression.

David Newbould – Power Up! CD/LP (Blackbird)

Since kickstarting his career in 2007, he's made his mark as a heartland roots-rocker, Americana artist, and amplified folksinger, writing songs that chart the ups and downs of an adulthood often spent onstage and on the road. He turns a new page with his fourth full-length studio album, Power Up!, a record whose messages of persistence and unshakeable survival are driven forward by the grease, grit, and guitar-driven swagger of rock & roll.

Nick Mulvey – New Mythology LP (Verve Forecast)

Nick Mulvey's work pushes boundaries in songwriting and sound. It's music both traditional and experimental, acoustic, and electronic. On his latest album, New Mythology, he explores the vulnerability of the everyday human experience; becoming a father, sickness, and death, navigating the pandemic, but also Nick's journey to compute the scope and scale of his feelings. It's an attempt to embody the personal all the way to the planetary and grasp their true inseparability.

Johnette Napolitano – Exquisit Corpses CD (Schoolkids)

New release from the singer, songwriter, and bassist best known for her leading role in rock trio Concrete Blonde.

Kelly Lee Owens – LP.8 LP (Smalltown Supersound)

Tough, industrial sounds with ethereal Celtic mysticism; music that ebbs and flows between tension and release. [CD edition due July 8.]

Prince Daddy & The Hyena – Prince Daddy & The Hyena LP (Pure Noise)

The new, self-titled release from the Albany, New York-based indie punk band dives into the theme of life coming to an end, both vocalist Kory Gregory's own life and fear of his friends and loved ones aging and dying. Gregory expands on why by saying, "It's the first time that it's hit me as an adult, the first time that the impermanence of everything struck, and that sent me into a little existential spiral." [Indie exclusive clear & black ‘pinwheel’ vinyl.]

Flora Purim – If You Will CD/LP (Strut)

One of the all-time greats of Brazilian jazz fusion, Flora Purim, returns with her first studio album in over 15 years. [A limited-edition clear vinyl pressing is available.]

Railroad Earth – All For The Song LP (Black Bear)

All For The Song is Railroad Earth's most recent studio endeavor and the last material that features the talents of late bandmate Andy Goessling. Produced by Anders Osborne and primarily recorded in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2019.

The Range – Mercury CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)

On Mercury, James Hinton builds on the techniques he established on his critically acclaimed 2016 LP Potential, seeking to create human connection in the Internet age through sampling vocalists from the corners of YouTube, Instagram, and Periscope. "I feel like I can find ways to express myself in ways that I'm too shy or unable to do in the real world," Hinton says of the process. Mercury is moody, transportive, and undeniably rave-infused, and although it is indebted to IDM mainstays and grime pioneers, the album finds Hinton pushing himself outside the constraints of any one specific genre.

Max Richter / Elena Urioste / Chineke! Orchestra – New Four Seasons - Vivaldi Recomposed LP (Deutsche Grammophon)

In this "alternative rendering," Chineke! Orchestra - the groundbreaking British ensemble consisting of majority Black, Asian, and ethnically diverse musicians - and American violinist Elena Urioste, play on gut strings and period instruments, the kind that Vivaldi would have heard and played in his own time. The new recording was produced on an analog mixing desk at Richter's own cutting edge Studio Richter Mahr with the composer himself playing an early Moog from the 1970s.

Julius Rodriguez – Let Sound Tell All CD/LP (Verve)

On his debut, Let Sound Tell All, Julius Rodriguez stirs a cauldron of gospel, jazz, classical, R&B, hip-hop, experimentation, production, and technical wizardry to create a stunning album that eschews classification, but commands attention. When you hear Julius Rodriguez play "the music" (as he calls it) it's a modern sound, as fluent in history as it is aware of its contemporary context. His music dares to imagine a future of new standards and sonic excitement.

Emma Ruth Rundle – EG2: Dowsing Voice LP+MP3 (Sargent House)

Emma Ruth Rundle's second installment in her Electric Guitar series, EG2: Dowsing Voice, is almost like the soundtrack to a film that hasn't been made. The mostly instrumental record follows her on a trip to the Welsh coast and down a magical well into the waters of nature, myth, and the Old Gods - by way of her improvised music. The 40+ minute album was sewn together from recordings channeled during her month-long solo journey in the early days of 2020 and completed before 2021's critically lauded album Engine Of Hell was written. Unlike Electric Guitar One, EG2: Dowsing Voice features vocal improvisation, unconventional singing and extended vocal techniques free from lyrics. [Limited-edition translucent red vinyl.]

Read Southall Band – For The Birds CD/LP (Smoklahoma)

While impossible to pinpoint, the music on For the Birds could be called, well, timeless. It's rock 'n' roll, and it doesn't easily fall into labels like country, Southern rock, or classic rock. It's ambitious to a degree that's rare for a guitar-driven band in 2021 – witness the first single "Where We Belong", an epic number that clocks in at a whopping six-plus minutes. You're not going to find many albums that evoke both the likes of Waylon Jennings ("Here We Are") or early grunge ("Out of My Mind", which would sound just fine sandwiched between Temple Of The Dog and an early Smashing Pumpkins record). From classic to contemporary rock, these are songs that could appeal to the disparate fanbases of Gary Stewart, Joe Walsh, Rival Sons, or Chris Cornell.

Tangent – Songs From The Hard Shoulder CD/2xLP+CD (Inside Out U.S.)

New album from the prog/jazz rock band.

Vieux Farka Touré – Les Racines CD (World Circuit)

Known as the 'Hendrix of the Sahara', Vieux has released four critically acclaimed solo albums to date, extending the boundaries of traditional West African music into new and uncharted territory. He has also released audacious collaborations with the likes of Dave Matthews and jazz guitarist John Scofield, and albums with American singer-songwriter Julia Easterlin and Israeli singer-songwriter Idan Raichel. With Les Racines, which translates as 'the roots', Vieux documents a deep reconnection with the traditional Songhai music of northern Mali which is one of the traditions that has come to be known in the West as 'desert blues'.

Carrie Underwood – Denim & Rhinestones CD (Capitol Nashville)

Carrie Underwood releases a brand-new studio country album, Denim & Rhinestones. The album includes 12 tracks including her latest hit single, “Ghost Story”.

U-Ziq – Magic Pony Ride 2xLP (Planet Mu)

Double purple colored vinyl pressing. New album from Mike Paradinas, following up last year's album Scurlage on Analogical Force. Mike returns to his roots with a jungle and breakbeat influenced melodic selection. Harking back to the sound first heard on Lunatic Harness but updated for 2022.

Wilma Vritra - Grotto LP (Bad Taste)

The second album from the transatlantic duo Wilma Vritra is richly orchestrated, replete with references to faith, mythology, and the cosmos, its 11 tracks grapple with themes of self-preservation and refuge from the world, even as they edge their way to a sort of redemption. Grotto is the work of two musicians separated by an ocean but undoubtedly operating on a shared wavelength. One is Will Archer, a Newcastle-born London-based multi-instrumentalist and composer who today records as Wilma Archer, but who you might also know for his writing and production for artists like Celeste, Nilufer Yanya and Jessie Ware. Wilma Archer’s debut solo album A Western Circular, featured guest spots from the late MF DOOM, Future Islands’ Samuel T Herring, Sudan Archives and Laura Grove. The other is Hal Donell Williams Jr, aka VRITRA - a Los Angeles-based rapper whose tales of graft and grind are often couched in spiritual or cosmic terms. VRITRA has previously collaborated with Matt Martians via The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Pink Siifu and YUNGMORPHEUS.

New album from the Italian ‘battle metal’ band.

Reissues, Compilations, Live Recordings & Vault Excavations...

Anathema – The Silent Enigma [Reissue/1995] LP (Peaceville)

The Silent Enigma, Anathema's second studio album, was originally released in the summer of '95 and was the first release on which guitarist Vincent Cavanagh took over the vocal duties of the departed Darren White. Where Darren's vocals were guttural, Vincent's style pushed the possibilities for Anathema onwards and upwards, with a scope and breadth beyond his years, complimenting an ethereal roller-coaster of thoughtful atmospherics and crushing Celtic Frost style riffs - the Swiss legends being a notable inspiration. What emerged was a fine example of highly atmospheric and often emotional gothic doom, spawning classic Anathema songs such as "Restless Oblivion", "Sunset of Age", "The Silent Enigma" and "A Dying Wish".

Anathema – A Vision Of A Dying Embrace [Reissue/1997] LP (Peaceville)

A Vision Of A Dying Embrace contains a night of spellbinding doom metal from Anathema's live show in Krakow, Poland, in 1996. Whilst still reasonably early in the career of the band and with rhythm guitarist Vincent Cavanagh taking on vocal duties only relatively recently for the sublime "The Silent Enigma" opus, the set contained a whole selection of now-established classics from Anathema's first two studio albums and Pentecost III EP, with epics like "A Dying Wish," "Sleepless" and "Mine is Yours" captured in their purest and rawest form in the live setting. Available on vinyl for the first time with printed inner sleeve.

Bad Religion – The Process Of Belief [Reissue/2002] LP+MP3 (Epitaph)

Limited 20th Anniversary orange and black color vinyl pressing of twelfth studio album by Bad Religion. It was produced by its leaders Greg Graffin and Brett Gurewitz.

Double Exposure – Ten Percent [Reissue/1976] LP (Salsoul)

Ten Percent is the debut studio album recorded by Philadelphia-based disco group Double Exposure. Originally released in 1976 on the Salsoul label, the album features the hit title track and further standouts like "Everyman (Has to Carry His Own Weight)" and "My Love Is Free" plus the group's incredible rendition of the Four Tops "Baby I Need Your Loving". Out of print for over 25 years, this colored vinyl reissue contains updated cover sleeve artwork.

Farben (a.k.a. Jan Jelinek) - textstar+ 2xLP (Faitiche)

On textstar+, Jan Jelinek brings together the material from the CMYK series, four EPs he released between 1999 and 2002 under the pseudonym farben (the German word for both colors and paints). The farben project has its roots in Jelinek's love of house as a reductionist vision of soul. Of four to the floor as a proposition that can be accessed anywhere. Of electronic dance music as a realm of possibility that can be continually expanded. The vectors of sound, word and image point to Isaac Hayes and Ornette Coleman, to Detroit and the first generation of the Red Army Faction, to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. So multifarious that they are distorted to the point of recognition. Overall, you hear sonic docufictions whose appealing vagueness derives precisely from this oscillation between clarity and ambiguity, which is also the source of their poetry: the lyricism of the pure circulation of signs. The sampler Jelinek used for these tracks had to be fed with floppy disks, imposing a memory limit of 1.44 megabytes per audio quotation from soul or jazz records. As a necessary consequence of this, the individual references, like the dots of color, are dissolved into details and abstractions.

Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders – GarciaLive Volume 18: November 2nd, 1974 Keystone Berkeley 2xCD (Round Records/Virgin)

Produced from the original 1/4" analog master reels, GarciaLive Vol. 18 presents this previously uncirculated performance captured at the Bay Area's vaunted Keystone Berkeley. Garcia and Saunders are joined by John Kahn, Martin Fierro (Zero, Sir Douglas Quintet) and Paul Humphrey (Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker, Lawrence Welk) for genre-bending explorations of R&B, reggae, jazz, and rock classics including "The Harder They Come", "You Can Leave Your Hat On", "Freedom Jazz Dance", and more.

The Gathering – Always... [Reissue/1992] LP (Peaceville)

The Gathering is a Dutch alternative rock band founded in 1989 by brothers Hansand & René Rutten with vocalist Bart Smits. The early incarnation of the band featured a much more death and doom metal-based style than the more atmospheric rock and experimental music they became known for over the years, having enjoyed a highly successful career globally over a 20-year period. The band recorded two demos initially before making their studio debut with Always... Originally released in 1992, it is a prime example of classic atmospheric death/doom metal with brutal vocals and slow funereal riffing influenced by bands such as Celtic Frost, as well as the implementation of keyboards to accentuate the dark ambience.

The Gladiators – One Love: The Best Of Their Nighthawk Recordings CD (Omnivore Recordings)

Formed by singer and guitarist Albert Griffiths in the mid- '60s, Gladiators soon became a force in the genres of ska and reggae. As reggae moved toward ragga (synthesized drums, sampling, etc.) Gladiators' recordings for the Nighthawk Records label in the '80s stayed true to their roots- reggae sound. One Love: The Best Of Their Nighthawk Recordings collects 20 tracks from their tenure at the label, including tracks from the albums Symbol Of Reality (1982) and Serious Thing (1984), as well as the 1992 collection of previously unissued tracks Full Time, the 1983 US Tour EP, and Dread Prophecy (recorded with Ethiopian) from 1986.

Jonny Greenwood – The Power Of The Dog (Soundtrack From The Netflix Film) LP (Lakeshore)

Original soundtrack to the 2021 motion picture composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.

Patty Griffin – Tape CD (PGM)

The 2x Grammy-winner releases a collection of rare demos and lo-fi home recordings. “Only an artist as strong as Patty Griffin would overlook these ten great performances in search of ‘better’ material. Hindsight often has its advantages and time between can bring a new perspective as did here. Yet Griffin is unlike many other artists. She doesn’t offer up explanations for the inspiration for her songs. She rarely talks about themes or threads that run through her work. Yet, like many artists, she put the pandemic time off to good use, researching older material and in the process, making some new discoveries. Some of the songs she found were initially recorded alone in her home, singing into a recorder in the wee hours of the morning. A few were from an in-studio demo session in Nashville, including a duet with Robert Plant around the time they first met. She is all about the performances.” – Glide Magazine

David Sylvian – Sleepwalkers CD/2xLP (Groenland)

In the ‘00s, David Sylvian produced two of his strongest and most solitary statements, Blemish and Manafon. But those records don't tell the whole story. During that the same period, Sylvian created an alternate body of work: a series of collaborations and side projects with leading talents of pop and improv, electronic and contemporary classical music. The best of these recordings are gathered here on Sleepwalkers, meticulously sequenced and remixed: the fruits of one-off meetings and lifelong partnerships, they jump from bliss to intrigue, romance to sensuality, as arch experiments lead into the lushest pop.

Rufus Wainwright – Rufus Does Judy At Capitol Studios CD (BMG)

Rufus Does Judy At Capitol Studios finds Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performing his groundbreaking 2007 tribute to Judy Garland, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, in its entirety, live from Los Angeles' famed Capitol Studios. "The American Songbook and Judy Garland's famed 1961 Carnegie Hall concert gave me a lot of hope after 9/11 and lead to the idea for my first song by song recreation of that show at the same venue," says Wainwright. "It felt fitting to do the entire set again as the dazzling finale of my Rufus-Retro-Wainwright-Spective and hopefully the beginning of the finale of this global pandemic. Once again, these songs revealed their healing power. To be able to sing them in front of Renée, to sing with Kristin Chenoweth and still have my sister Martha be part of these shows was particularly meaningful although to sing them into the very microphone that Judy used for her recordings at Capitol Studios was the most mind-blowing." [Vinyl edition due September 2.]

The White Stripes – Icky Thump [Reissue/2007] 2xLP (Third Man)

Recorded in the lush environs of Nashville's Blackbird Studios, the trumpet, bagpipes and 1940's synthesizer all feel appropriate here, driving home the idea that The White Stripes were consistent through whatever disparate elements they chose.

Ndikho Xaba & The Natives – Ndikho Xaba & The Natives [Reissue/1971] LP (Mississippi)

Ndikho Xaba left South Africa in 1964, an exile from his homeland who eventually found a home in San Francisco's vibrant spiritual jazz scene of the late 60s. A songwriter, bandleader, pianist, and inventor of percussion and woodwind instruments, Xaba played alongside contemporaries like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Sun Ra. But it was on the single album he recorded in the US, released in an edition of just 500 copies in 1971, that Xaba realized his unique vision. Backed by a band that included Plunky Branch and Lon Moshe (Oneness Of Juju and Black Fire label), Xaba bridged the Black Atlantic, connecting the music of Africa with the most brilliant lights of the Diaspora, and drawing a line between the Black Power movement of the US and the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Across five songs, Xaba and the band move through spiritual invocations, wrenching soul, and dizzying layers of rhythm knocked out on homemade instruments.
