Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

An Autumn For Crippled Children – As The Morning Dawns We Close Our Eyes LP (Prosthetic)

Limited white color vinyl pressing of the new release from the Dutch post-black metal band.

Big Brave – Vital LP (Southern Lord)

Limited color vinyl pressing. Minimalism and instinct, structure/freedom and meticulous timing form the cornerstones of Big Brave's precise, rhythmical sound. On their new album Vital, the recording features the core trio Robin Wattie, Mathieu Ball and Tasy Hudson, for their most collaborative record they've made so far. The band comments, "Having cut our teeth in very different musical backgrounds respectively, our intuitions vary, which has an interesting effect on our individual approaches and ears."

Eugene Chadbourne and Jim McHugh – Bad Scene CD/LP (Post Present Medium)

An LP of guitar improvisations and songs by the multigenerational improvisational protest-duo.

The Goon Sax – Mirror II CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)

Since forming in high school, Brisbane band The Goon Sax has been celebrated for their unpretentious, kinetic homemade pop. Mirror ll is something else entirely: a new beginning, a multi-dimensional eclectic journey of musical craftsmanship that moves from disco to folk to no wave skronk with staggering cohesion.

Graduating Life – II CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Feisty, buoyant, quirky melodic not-quite-punk rock.

Half Waif – Mythopoetics LP+MP3 (Epitaph)

Half Waif, the project of Nandi Rose, returns with the new album, Mythopoetics. It's a record about processing past traumas in the quest for a new, sun dappled pathway, and the transformation that takes place as we take each tentative step. The artwork, shot by Ali Cherkis, sees Rose screaming in bright colors on the front, and naked, with a stoic expression on the back, representing the spectrum of emotions explored throughout each track. Change, evolution and joy take real courage, and it's in the catharsis of telling your story that the calm, confident aftermath can finally reach the surface. Here, Half Waif is shunning the shadowed mass of generational trauma and the patterns passed down to her. Instead, she plants a seed, urging the orange blossom to sprout through the cracks in the concrete. To bring together the world of Mythopoetics, Rose once again collaborated with multi-instrumentalist, film composer and producer Zubin Hensler. [Indie store exclusive champagne wave vinyl.]

Koreless – Agor CD/LP (Young Turks)

Producer Lewis Roberts aka Koreless announces his much-anticipated debut album. “Agor” is the Welsh word for open and it's an apt name for a recording which exists at sensory thresholds, straddling the various worlds of dance, ambient and contemporary classical while not sounding like an example of any of them.

Lin-Manuel Miranda – In The Heights (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) 3xLP (Atlantic)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The creator of Hamilton and the director of Crazy Rich Asians invite you to a cinematic event, where the streets are made of music and little dreams become big... In The Heights. Lights up on Washington Heights...The scent of a cafecito caliente hangs in the air just outside of the 181st Street subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies this vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is the likeable, magnetic bodega owner Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), who saves every penny from his daily grind as he hopes, imagines and sings about a better life. In The Heights fuses Lin-Manuel Miranda's kinetic music and lyrics with director Jon M. Chu's lively and authentic eye for storytelling to capture a world very much of its place, but universal in its experience.

Joy Oladokun – in defense of my own happiness (complete) CD (Republic/Verve)

Following the release of her critically acclaimed album, Nashville-based singer-songwriter and producer Joy Oladokun unveils the complete installment of her album series, in defense of my own happiness. The timeless body of work eloquently exudes Joy's deep emotions and confessional leanings as a black woman living in America.

Anna Fox Rochinski – Cherry LP (Don Giovanni)

Opaque red color vinyl pressing. After spending nearly a decade recording and touring with the collaborative psych rock band Quilt, Anna Fox Rochinski has completed her first solo record, Cherry, which pairs highly personal lyrics with an ebullient blend of progressive dance pop, electro funk, and DIY R&B.

Graham Sharp – Truer Picture CD/LP (Yep Roc)

Graham Sharp has made a name for himself as the chief songwriter and a founding member of the Grammy-winning Americana group Steep Canyon Rangers. As the world entered lockdown in 2020, Sharp began to draw inspiration from a wellspring of emotions. On his first solo album, Truer Picture, the songwriter tackles difficult feelings of isolation ("Come Visit My Island") and addresses the ever-topical political unrest we continue to see in the country ("My Neighborhood"). [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]

The Wallflowers – Exit Wounds CD/LP (New West)

Rock ‘n' roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with The Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock's most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996's Bringing Down The Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012's Glad All Over. But while it's been nine long years since we've heard from the group with whom he first made his mark, the Wallflowers are silent no more. [Indie store exclusive purple vinyl.]

Lucinda Williams – Lu's Jukebox Vol. 2: Southern Soul From Memphis To Muscle Shoals CD/LP (Highway 20)

Revered singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams is working to help independent music venues during this time with the announcement of Lu's Jukebox. Scheduled as a six-episode series of mostly full-band, HD video performances in-studio, Lu's Jukeboxfeatures a themed set of songs by other artists curated by the multi-Grammy award winner. Largely full-band performances recorded live at Ray Kennedy's Room & Board Studio in Nashville, TN, Lucinda has poured her heart and soul into each of these episodes. From hand-selecting the songs to giving it her all in the studio, this series has been a journey you won't want to miss. Lu's Jukebox Vol. 2 Southern Soul finds Lucinda dishing out numbers from Memphis to Muscle Shoals and beyond and tackling the likes of Joe South's "Games People Play", Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billy Joe", Ann Peebles' "I Can't Stand The Rain", Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night In Georgia" and Al Green's "Take Me To The River" among others.

Oliver Wood – Always Smilin’ CD/LP (Honey Jar)

Oliver Wood is a mainstay of modern-day American roots music. The frontman of the Wood Brothers since 2004, he's spent the 21st century blurring the boundaries between folk, gospel, country-soul, and Americana, earning an international audience and a Grammy Award-nomination along the way. Always Smilin', his debut as a solo artist, continues that tradition while also shining new light on Oliver's sharp songwriting, savvy guitar chops, and a voice that evokes the swagger of a Saturday evening picking party one moment and the solemnity of a Sunday morning gospel service the next. It is an album of bridges, mixing a wide range of collaborations with a uniquely personal touch. Guests include bandmates from Oliver's musical past and present, from mentor and co-writer Chris Long (who performed alongside Oliver in King Johnson, the roots-rock band that dominated Atlanta's music scene around the turn of the millennium) to percussionist Jano Rix (Oliver's partner in The Wood Brothers). Blues heroine Susan Tedeschi, Hiss Golden Messenger's Phil Cook, Medeski Martin & Wood's John Medeski, Tedeschi Trucks Band's Tyler Greenwell, Nashville staple Phil Madeira, and singer/songwriter Carsie Blanton also make appearances, with Rebecca Wood – Oliver's wife – handling the album's handmade linocut cover art. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

The EP's title track, "Wriggle", was built around a sample of the influential power-electronics song "Wriggle Like A F**king Eel" by Whitehouse, transforming William Bennett's torturous imperative into a instructional dance-floor banger. The 2021 edition features new artwork, guests, and previously unreleased remixes. Included are the original versions of the title track, "Shooter", "Hot F**k No Love" (feat. Cakes Da Killa & Maxi Wild), "Our Time" (feat. Nailah Middleton), along with "Back Up 2021" feat. SB The Moor and a new verse from industrial-rap experimentalist Debby Friday. The Flatlanders – Treasure Of Love CD/2xLP (Rack’Em)

Almost 50 years after the sessions that would make them an "accidental Texas supergroup" (Rolling Stone), The Flatlanders have returned with Treasure Of Love, their first new album in more than a decade. Completed during COVID-19 lockdowns with the help of longtime friend and collaborator Lloyd Maines, the record finds the iconic trio of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock in classic form, serving up a rollicking collection of twang-fueled, harmony-laden performances full of wry humor and raw heartbreak. While a few songs here are never-before-heard originals, the vast majority of the tracklist consists of tunes the band picked up during their half-century together, some stretching as far back as the group's earliest performances in the honkytonks around Lubbock, TX, where you might have spotted Willie Nelson or Townes Van Zandt in the audience.

Crunk became so popular that Jon became a fixture on Chappelle's Show and artists not directly connected to him (such as Mary J. Blige) began using the word Crunk, in their own music. Jon helped usher the word "Crunk" not only a national scale, but worldwide. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary added the word into their book in 2007.
