Delicate Steve – Delicate Steve Sings LP (Epitaph)

Steve Marion, the critically acclaimed-and completely wordless-songwriter and guitarist known as Delicate Steve, has unveiled a new album called Delicate Steve Sings. Is the album title a reference to the instantly recognizable "voice" of his guitar? Does he actually sing this time? Has he not been singing all along? That's the crux of Sings-Marion is the rare guitarist where you can put on any of his records and know exactly who's playing. In an indie rock landscape stuffed end-to-end with guitars and amplifiers, nobody else sounds like this.

It was such a beautiful moment in time, when these different styles of music were cross-referencing each other – artists like Nile Rogers and Chic, the Tom Tom Club and Giorgio Moroder," says Mark Foster. [Indie store exclusive translucent pink vinyl.]

Gel – Persona 12” (Blue Grape)

Hakushi Hasegawa – Mahōgakkō LP (Brainfeeder)

Lilac smoke marbled vinyl pressing. Consistent with Brainfeeder’s ethos of seeking out artists operating outside the confines of genre since the label started in 2008, Hakushi’s music is tricky to categorize as it straddles a few genres: alternative, electronic, jazz, pop/J-pop. Sometimes it’s pretty, at times it’s very intense and fast-paced.

As has come to be expected through his extensive and awarded discography, LaMontagne delivers yet again on record nine with a cohesive, impressive effort. LP – Heart To Mouth LP (BMG)

Of the record, she said, "When I get on the mic and start doing melodies, I can feel that direct line from my heart to my mouth. In the past, there was a city full of streets that needed my attention. Now, I feel like I have a major highway to communicate emotion from. Whether they're sadder songs or big anthems, they all come from the same place."

Muscadine Bloodline – The Coastal Plain CD/LP (Stancaster Music, LLC)

For nearly a decade, Muscadine Bloodline have delivered a soulful and potent form of country music indelibly colored by their Alabama heritage. But in the making of their latest body of work, the Mobile-bred duo dug deeper into their roots than ever before, dreaming up a batch of songs inspired by the places they know best: the blue-collar melting pot of their coastal hometown, bustling Cajun fishing villages and desolate timberlands, the untamed and idyllic spaces where they ran wild as children. In a thrilling evolution of past hits like the platinum-certified "Porch Swing Angel," vocalist Charlie Muncaster and vocalist/guitarist Gary Stanton merge that storytelling with a hard-hitting sound that alchemizes Alabama's musical traditions into a sonic dialect all their own. Equal parts lived-in history and elaborate mythology, The Coastal Plain ultimately marks Muscadine Bloodline's most daringly singular work to date. [Indie store exclusive autographed maroon vinyl.]

Daniel O'Sullivan - The Pastoral Machine LP (VHF)

Fourth volume of Library Music miniatures by Daniel O’Sullivan (Ulver, Æthenor, This is Not This Heat, etc) for VHF, this time commissioned by the legendary German Music Library, Sonoton. Another sampling of Daniel O’Sullivan’s versatility and brilliance as a composer, performer, and sound designer, the focus on The Pastoral Machine is more “electronic” compared to the three previous albums O’Sullivan recorded for KPM (also issued on LP by VHF), with simpler arrangements and a focus on gentle and emotive synthesised soundworlds. Even without as many full ensemble arrangements, there’s still a wealth of diversity—“Empathogen” opens the record with latticed arpeggiating sequences recalling Japanese “environmental music” or Persian Surgery-era Terry Riley, “Fruit Of Stream Entry” burbles with gentle ripples evoking the album’s title, while “The Silversmith Of Space” mines a simple chord sequence evoking Eno’s ’70s classic short instrumentals.

The Po’ Ramblin’ Boys – Wanderers Like Me CD/LP (Smithsonian Folkways)

Beneath the steel strings and steely demeanor exemplifying the spirit of bluegrass lies the heart of a wanderer: the heartbroken rambler looking for the next big break and the next story to tell. The Po' Rambin' Boys' Wanderers Like Me is a quintessential bluegrass record, full of melodies that burst with energy and emotion and music driven by melancholy but refusing to succumb to it. They confront their losses with original songs that resonate poignantly across the hills and hollers where bluegrass was born. For The Po' Ramblin' Boys wandering is anything but aimless: they ramble not to escape the past but to experience the future.

Post Malone – F-1 Trillion CD/2xLP (Republic)

Post Malone releases his much-anticipated sixth LP and first-ever full-length country album this year. Paving the way was the first single “I Had Some Help” with Morgan Wallen, which continues to dominate the charts and the conversation. Upon release, it crash-landed at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, tallying the highest weekly sales and streams since 2020. It became Post’s sixth #1 and Wallen’s second #1. It has clinched the #1 spot on the Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks, emerging as the longest running number one song of 2024. The album arrives on the heels of Post’s landmark set at Stagecoach Festival 2024 in Indio, CA with a lineup of country covers and welcoming superstar guests Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, and Dwight Yoakam during the standout performance. Morgan Wade – Obsessed CD/2xLP (SME Nashville)

Wade’s third album and follow-up to 2023’s Psychopath, Obsessed puts the focus on Wade’s storytelling abilities and singular voice. She writes with incredible force about the ache for home and the emotion of being reunited with loved ones, of feeling dangerously preoccupied with someone, and of being in situations that society might consider outside the norm. On Obsessed, Wade also does a thorough examination and inventory of her journey as a person, not sparing any ugly details when she’s been the one at fault. It’s a fearless look into the life of one of country music’s most exciting talents, arriving right as she’s hitting her stride. [This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]

With this album, I invite listeners from all walks of life to the world of The Blues as it is in 2024. I invite people to engage with the ups and downs we all experience, through this music.”

Wishy – Triple Seven LP/Cassette (Winspear)

You could call Wishy’s story a lucky one. After prior monikers and iterations, Wishy was born as a kaleidoscope of alternative music’s semi-recent history, with traces of shoegaze, grunge and power-pop swirling together. On Triple Seven, Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites’ musical synergy proves itself to be a rare one–the kind that sounds like someone striking gold. Part sly wink and part warm gratitude, it’s only fitting their much-anticipated full length debut is titled Triple Seven, where Wishy’s penchant for indelible hooks is couched equally in pillowy atmospherics and scathing distortion. [A red color vinyl pressing is available.]

This album features previously unreleased recordings by the legendary French band Dogs. Known for blending their perfect ‘50s/’60s influences into a sound uniquely their own, Dogs enjoyed a golden period from 1977 to 1984, releasing some nearly classic albums, but sometimes the production toned down the authenticity. It is often said that demos are superior to a released product, and it is certainly the case here. This expanded version includes four B-sides from the era. [A gold color vinyl pressing is available.]

The Scientists – You Get What You Deserve [Reissue/1985] LP (Numero)

Bad vibes, habits, and breath collide on this ten-song pile up on the freeway to nowhere. Melting neo-grunge, swamprock, and noise punk in a cauldron of drug-addled psychosis, 1985's You Get What You Deserve continues Australia's prison-as-country tradition of unhinged lunacy in the face of cultural isolation.
