Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Laurie Anderson – Amelia CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Amelia is the 2024 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient's first album since 2018's Grammy-winning Landfall. The record comprises twenty-two tracks about renowned female aviator Amelia Earhart's tragic last flight. Anderson, who Pitchfork says, "sees the future, but she starts by paying attention," wrote the music and lyrics for this subjective narrative piece. On the album, she is joined by the Czech orchestra Filharmonie Brno, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, and Anohni, Gabriel Cabezas, Rob Moose, Ryan Kelly, Martha Mooke, Marc Ribot, Tony Scherr, Nadia Sirota, and Kenny Wolleson.

AWOLNATION – The Phantom Five CD/LP (Thank You For Listening Entertainment)

AWOLNATION titling the fifth album of original songs in 15 years, The Phantom Five is about more than just chronology. The number 5 is associated with independence and individualism, major life changes and experiences, all of which influenced the resulting album. It's a collection of ten songs that highlights every different impulse and urge Bruno has learned to master with AWOLNATION in a cohesive, anthemic pastiche of modern music. As he himself admits, it functions almost as a "greatest hits" album, in the sense that it offers something for everyone who has followed the band's arc in its celebrated, shape-shifting way. [An indie store exclusive blue color vinyl pressing is available.]

The Boxmasters – Love & Hate In Desperate Places CD (Keentone)

Formed in 2007, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences, but most importantly, the rock and roll of the 1960's. Love & Hate In Desperate Places is their 17th album and the ten songs evince a wry perspective on human nature and love. The lively melodic rock cloaks the wry wit of the lyrics. The album was produced by The Boxmasters, Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew, who also wrote every song. Listening to The Boxmasters, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles, Byrds and Beach Boys, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Big Star.

The Bug Club – On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System CD/LP (Sub Pop)

The way you're saying it, "prolific" isn't the right word for The Bug Club. You've got to say it with the trademark Welsh lilt and pay due homage to this inimitable band's origins in the renowned hit factory of Caldicot, South Wales. Do that, and you're about right with how to summarize a group who've released ten singles, two albums, two EPs, three things nobody knew how to describe, and an album under a different band's name, all since 2021, and while playing 200+ gigs a year.

Initially comprising the songwriting core of Sam Willmett (vocals/guitar) and Tilly Harris (vocals/bass) with Dan Matthew (drums), The Bug Club started plying their trade in 2016. They were signed by UK label Bingo Records in Autumn of 2020. BBC 6 Music's Marc Riley was an early champion, hammering the single, booking the band in for a session as soon as it was allowed, and rightfully praising songwriters capable of singing the whole alphabet in a two-minute song and making it work. Third LP On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System sees the band serve up a beefy slab of their specialty Modern-Lovers-meets-Nuggets garage rock. [Limited ‘loser edition’ smoke color vinyl.]

The Cactus Blossoms – Every Time I Think About You CD/LP (Walkie Talkie)

At its best, harmony duo singing can transform simple math into a magic trick. One plus one, instead of equaling two, suddenly yields an unexpected third thing. An upper-case ONE. A universal hum. A deep vibration that encompasses two different points of view. On their latest release, Every Time I Think About You, brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey, aka The Cactus Blossoms, once again prove themselves to be among the most adept - and instinctive - modern practitioners of the classic tradition. All sorts of emotional colors shine through. [Limited edition bronze vinyl.]

Caleb Caudle – Sweet Critters LP (Caleb Caudle)

These songs are a showcase of Caudle’s singular command of language. He sees the world through a hyperreal lens wholly unique to him, one that renders dank humidity “horsefly heat,” a moody sky “cast iron skillet” dark, or a loved one’s “wind chime of a smile.”

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Wild God CD/LP (Play It Again Sam)

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds return with new album, Wild God. Across the ten tracks of the album, the band dances between convention and experimentation, taking left-turns and detours that heighten the rich imagery and emotion in Cave's soul-stirring narratives. It is the sound of a group emboldened by reconnection and taking flight. There are moments that touch fondly upon the Bad Seeds' past, but they are fleeting, and serve only to imbue the relentless and restless forward motion of the band. [A white color vinyl pressing is available.]

Luke Combs – Fathers & Sons CD/LP (SME Nashville)

A collection of 12 poignant tracks, Fathers & Sons was recorded entirely live and features Combs most personal songwriting to date, as he reflects on his own experiences being a dad to his two sons and the unique bond between parents and their children. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Shemekia Copeland – Blame It On Eve CD/LP (Alligator)

Grammy-nominated blues, soul and Americana singer is beloved and honored worldwide for her joyful, defiant music and thrillingly soulful performances. Blame It On Eve is another exhilarating Shemekia Copeland showcase, as her rousing vocals bring the heat to an infectious array of muscular rockers, stomping blues, swampy soul, and heartbreaking ballads. Intense, topical new originals make up most of the tracks and soul-soaked versions of songs by Stevie Wonder and her father, Johnny Copeland, fit right into the mix. [Limited edition gold vinyl.]

Dead Horse One - Seas of Static LP (Requiem pour un Twister)

With their fourth album, Seas of Static, the French band Dead Horse One establishes itself as one of the heaviest bands of modern shoegaze, propelling the genre to new heights of power and emotion. On this album, Dead Horse One skillfully merges the incisive alternative metal of Deftones with the enveloping and ethereal sound of My Bloody Valentine. The result is a captivating whirlwind, where walls of guitars collide in a surge of creativity, raw emotion, and energy. Far from recycling, Seas of Static is a deep exploration of the grungegaze fusion, thus creating a unique and powerful sound, far from being conventional.

Denzel Curry – King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2 CD/LP (Loma Vista)

Denzel Curry returns with King Of The Mischievous South Vol. 2, embodying his persona "Big Ultra." A long-awaited album blending sounds from the South's hip-hop heritage, '90s inspired beats referencing Memphis and luminary groups like Three6Mafia. Featuring artists like A$AP Rocky, 2 Chainz, Ty Dolla $ign, Juicy J and many more, the album reminisces on Curry's career and reconciles past relationships. Departing from his concept-driven albums, it highlights Curry's rap prowess and creative spontaneity. [Indie store exclusive neon violet vinyl.]

Rockin' Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters – More Fun With Rockin' Dopsie Jr. & The Zydeco Twisters CD/LP (ATO)

Celebrated as one of New Orleans' greatest entertainers, Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. Continues the zydeco tradition forged by his father (accordionist Rockin' Dopsie) and his legendary band, The Twisters. Having collaborated with Beyoncé, Paul Simon and Tina Turner, and featured in the 2024 film, Roadhouse, Dopsie, Jr. and his band continue sharing the joy of zydeco with a soul-stirring, body-moving album led by the powerful vocals and singular washboard stylings of David Rockin' Dopsie, Jr. [Limited edition purple vinyl.]

Jim Gaffigan – The Prisoner LP (Comedy Dynamics)

The Prisoner is an old school album only release just for you. The material is all new and never released (with one fun exception).

Galliano – Halfway Somewhere LP (Brownswood)

Almost three decades on from their last release, acid jazz forefathers Galliano are back with their new LP Halfway Somewhere which is being released on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. Where the old Galliano recycled records they heard at clubs, today they are responding to the kaleidoscopic global jazz scene - from Total Refreshment Centre in London to International Anthem in Chicago. More than 40 years since they came together, Galliano are still only Halfway Somewhere, but listening to the album they are obviously having fun getting there.

Kenya Grace – The After Taste LP (WB)

Magenta vinyl. Songwriter Kenya Grace broke out last year, with her irresistible single ‘Strangers’ becoming global smash. Produced, written, and performed by Grace, it affirmed her as one of electronic pop’s freshest all-rounders. Eventually going platinum in three countries and reaching gold status in twelve countries, Kenya blended this with in-out visits to studios wherever she could find them.

Katseye – SIS (Soft Is Strong) LP (Interscope)

SIS (Soft Is Strong) reflects one of Katseye's core beliefs - Soft Is Strong - and nods to the sisterhood they've forged, despite coming from immensely different cultures. The six members of Katseye are: Daniela (USA); Lara (USA); Manon (Switzerland); Megan (USA); Sophia (Philippines); and Yoonchae (South Korea).

Alicia Keyes / Shoshana Bean / Maleah Joi Moon – Hell’s Kitchen (Original Broadway Cast Recording) LP (UMG)

Translucent blue colorway. The 13 Tony-nominated Broadway musical is a coming-of-age story based on the life of Alicia Keys featuring her iconic hits including "Fallin'," "If I Ain't Got You" and more reimagined! In the mid '90s, in an apartment high above the energy and grit of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, 17-year-old Ali squints toward the horizon until she can just see the Hudson River. Despite the warnings of her protective mother, the symphony of the street calls to her - promising freedom, excitement, and the possibility of love. Finding herself. When a wise piano teacher helps her find her voice, Ali learns she can make the city her own. [CD version due September 13.]

Bartosz Kruczyński - Dreams & Whispers LP (Balmat)

Balmat has always been careful not to call itself an ambient label. But with the 11th release, the label turns its ears -- proudly, blissfully -- to a strain of ambient at its most timeless. The appropriately titled Dreams & Whispers comes from Warsaw's Bartosz Kruczyński, who has recorded under a number of guises, Earth Trax, as well as his own name. Over the years, he's touched upon deep house, breakbeats, acid, techno, electro, IDM, and more; often, the throughline running through a given album is simply the refusal to remain in any one place for long -- well, that, and his unusually nuanced ear for harmony and texture. Those qualities come to the fore on Dreams & Whispers, which might be the most focused encapsulation of Kruczyński's atmospheric sensibilities to date. Across 14 stripped-down tracks for shimmer and pulse, Kruczyński evokes overlapping styles in ambient -- warm vibraphones, taut arps, massing strings, lonesome delay chains -- but always with his own twist.

David Kushner – The Dichotomy CD/2xLP (Virgin)

David Kushner's debut album delves into the tapestry of human existence by exploring two contrasts. Comprising 17 songs, this musical work examines the interplay between light and darkness, happiness and sadness, anger and love, hero and villains, and the dichotomy of our inner demons and angels. Through a fusion of introspective lyrics, David Kushner captures the essence of emotional experiences, providing connections from all walks of life. [Indie store exclusive gold vinyl. Order your copy for your wristband and join us tomorrow when David Kushner will perform at Grimey’s and meet fans and sign records!]

Los Bitchos – Talkie Talkie CD/LP (City Slang)

If Los Bitchos' electrifying 2022 debut album Let The Festivities Begin! was the rowdy build up to the big night out, then Talkie Talkie is the Technicolor explosion of the dancefloor. Made up of lead guitarist Serra, who carries both Australian and Turkish heritage, Uruguayan synth and keytar player Agustina Ruiz, Swedish bassist Josefine Jonsson and British drummer Nic Crawshaw, the group are united by a commitment to having fun. It's a contagious energy they've had no problem transmitting to the world: since the band officially arrived in 2019 with two sell-out 7" singles, they marked themselves as one of London's brightest bands to watch. The London-based quartet's new album Talkie Talkie is glistening with charisma, sonic experimentation and a puckish spirit. [Indie store exclusive magenta vinyl with alternate cover pressing.]

Jana Mila – Chameleon CD/LP (New West)

When the Amsterdam singer-songwriter Jana Mila (pronounced Yah-nuh MEE- lah) began writing a song called “Chameleon,” she thought she was writing about someone else—a friend who seemed to be changing her colors to please other people. “But the more I lived with the song, the more I felt like I was writing about myself,” she admits. “Doesn’t everybody try to reflect other people? Don’t I change my own colors in order to be accepted? Especially when you’re young, you can lose yourself in other people if you don’t know who you are.” That is the central idea behind her debut album, also titled Chameleon, which introduces Mila as an artist deeply committed to self-reckoning and self-possession. Our innate desire to belong and to be loved can lead to a kind of self-annihilation, making us strangers to ourselves. Writing songs is her means of finding and sustaining her identity. [Limited edition crystal sky blue color vinyl.]

Nails – Every Bridge Burning CD/LP/Cassette (Nuclear Blast)

For the first time in over eight years, the blistering assault on our nervous system that can only be described as the sound of Nails, has reemerged. With Carlos Cruz on drums, Andrew Solis on Bass, Shelby Lermo on Guitars, and Todd Jones on guitar and vocals, the latest studio album, Every Bridge Burning. It echoes their commitment to authenticity and raw power. Nails remain a beacon of rebellion and resilience in a world hungry for genuine expression. With no shortage of effort or meticulous song arrangement, the time has arrived to become engulfed in the ferocity of Nails once again as Every Bridge Burning unveils a new, but familiar chapter in extreme music. [Limited edition forest green vinyl.]

Oceanator – Everything Is Love And Death LP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

On Oceanator's third full-length album, Everything Is Love And Death, songwriter Elise Okusami showcases her exceptional pop sensibilities, delivering 11 tracks full of melodic depth and lively energy. Oceanator's music has been praised in outlets such as Stereogum, Pitchfork, NPR and SPIN, who described Okusami as having "the kind of voice that can silence a room." The band has shared the stage with the likes of Jeff Rosenstock, Laura Jane Grace, PUP, and others with a notable touring history across North America and Europe. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]

Paris Paloma – Cacophony CD (Nettwerk)

Written around themes of feminine rage, societal expectations on women and deeply embedded misogyny, Cacophony continues the deep consideration and dissection of Paris' own experiences and observations as a woman. Drawing comparisons to artists like Florence + The Machine and Hozier, Paris' songwriting taps into cultural movements, inspiring fans around the world. "labour," and subsequent singles including "as good a reason," have seen her lyrics and music resonate deeply with an ever growing fanbase.

Ty Segall – Love Rudiments LP/Cassette (Drag City)

A meditation from Ty Segall on love, played on his first love: the drums. Delving deep into the melodic and orchestral possibilities of a full array of percussion instruments, from the trap kit to timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, Ty charts the waxing and waning of a love affair, to explore some of the most delicate space we know of – the private emotional location where only two can meet.

Seph - Séptimo Sentido LP (Lapsus Records)

There are albums that tap into the very heartbeats of rhythm, melody and intricate sound design, pulsating with every musical note. This is the case with Séptimo Sentido, the new album by veteran Buenos Aires-based producer Sebastián Galante, aka Seph, one of the leading talents in the Argentina techno scene. On his new album Séptimo Sentido, Seph exhibits superlative production skills and masterfully showcases the widest palette of the braindance sound, that intersection where countless genres and sub-styles can coexist. There are echoes from the mid-'90s that revive undeniable references of early IDM, but with a renewed form, under a fiercely contemporary new skin. At the core of this intriguing album is an artist whose devotion to experimentation takes his rhythmic and melodic obsessions through vibrant magical-techno-urban landscapes, where radiant colors and mutating forms collide in a bold and imaginative sonic journey.

Becca Stevens – Maple To Paper CD (GroundUp Music Merchandize)

Twice Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Becca Stevens has established an outstanding career of blending effortless vocal talent with exquisite compositions that draw inspiration from pop, jazz, indie-rock, and folk music traditions. Her music stretches the boundaries of convention with songs that weave together her classical and Appalachian folk music upbringing with her love of the rich rhythms and harmonies of jazz and world music, further enhanced and accompanied by her skill on multiple string instruments.

Uniform – American Standard CD/LP (Sacred Bones)

American Standard is surely Uniform's most thematically accomplished and musically self-assured album to date. Sections spiral and explode. Motifs drift off into obscurity before reasserting themselves with new power. Genres collide and burst open, forming something idiosyncratic and new. There's a grandeur, due in part to the addition of Interpol bassist Brad Truax alongside the percussive push and pull of returning drummer Michael Sharp and longtime touring drummer Michael Bloom, marking his Uniform recorded debut here. However, this magnificence is most clearly attributable to the scale and power of guitarist and founder Ben Greenberg's arrangements, matching ever elegantly to the intense lyrical subject matter. Without a shred of doubt, American Standard is a work of art, agonizing in its honesty and relentless in its pursuit of sonic transcendence. It is hideous. It is beautiful. It is necessary. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]

Valley – Water The Flowers Pray For A Garden LP (Capitol)

Blue and white watercolor pressing. Valley's third full-length album was written entirely over the course of a month in a secluded cabin in rural Tennessee. Executive produced by COIN's Chase Lawrence, Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden is a brave exploration of the full spectrum of emotions with an invitation to also surrender control and trust the process.

Wintersun – Time II CD/LP (Nuclear Blast)

Time II includes six epic tracks with individual stories. Yet the subjects are all linked, and this red line gives it a conceptual feeling. Entering Wintersun's universe, we are brought into the right mood with the eastern-influenced, atmospheric intro “Fields Of Snow”. The first real Wintersun track is the metallic brilliance of “The Way Of The Fire”, with fire representing the energy of stars as a source of life, which is also connected to time. In “One With The Shadows” we experience the magic of an opulence of vocal harmonies, while orchestral arrangements loom up as ornamental move. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Wunderhorse – Midas LP (Communion)

In 10 songs and 40 minutes, Wunderhorse captures the raw power and energy that has set them apart as one of the most formidable live acts of recent years. With rugged hooks, unfiltered noise, and fierce melodic sensitivity, Midas rips up the script of traditional second albums and establishes the band as an endlessly addictive and rousing generational talent.

Steve Wynn - Make It Right CD/LP (Fire Records)

The brand-new solo album from The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn, released in tandem with his memoir. Make It Right is a commentary between literal and metaphorical ruminating – a dialogue between memoirist and musician - a vulnerable, more reflective Wynn than previously heard. The album features notable contributions from Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Chris Schlarb (Psychic Temple), Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Linda Pitmon (The Baseball project) and a cast of dozens. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]

Yannis & The Yaw – Lagos Paris London CD/LP (Transgressive)

In 2016, Foals singer Yannis Philippakis was offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a two-day session with the great drummer Tony Allen. The pair quickly established an intuitive telepathy, and the music germinated from jams and loops, and was complemented by a unique atmosphere of two cultures and creatives colliding. Joined by Tony's regular collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) that first meeting resulted in a handful of near complete songs, which were further developed during a couple subsequent sessions. But between scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, the recordings were not completed before Tony passed away in April 2020. Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honor and celebrate his old friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. The result is this five-track EP, Lagos Paris London, under the Yannis & the Yaw umbrella. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

Zedd – Telos LP (Interscope)

Third studio album by the Russian-German electronic music producer. “With Telos, I wanted to create a profound album listening experience that takes you on a journey beyond just the songs. I wanted everyone to be able to feel a deeper emotional connection, like how I felt listening to my favourite albums when I was growing up. It was the details, transitions and cohesiveness that made me want to create a truly meaningful body of work.”

Aerial M – The Peel Sessions LP (Drag City)

Coke bottle green vinyl. Unearthed from the neolithic tar that eventually swathes all history, Aerial M’s early- ‘98 Peel Session is once again among us. Compared to the studio takes, played strictly and singly by Aerial/Papa mastermind David Pajo, these versions swing from the necks of road-burned players, breathing more bestially than their canonical cousins, glinting ‘pon the dark metallic roots that fed all of Pajo’s best guitar lines, winding thru time immemorial.

Dr. John – The Brightest Smile In Town [Reissue/1983] CD/2xLP (Sundazed)

Upon the release of The Brightest Smile in Town, the reviews were effusive. Chicago critic Bill Knight’s comparisons to Fats Waller and James P. Johnson were high compliments indeed. Downbeat’s Jim Roberts called the playing 'graceful'; noting that the LP had a broader scope than its predecessor. Jazz Times’ Rhodes Spedale summarized: 'He’s never been in better form than here.'

Stan Getz – Sweet Rain [Reissue/1967] LP (Verve)

Stan Getz's incomparable career includes such landmarks as the bossa nova blockbuster Getz/Gilberto, and stellar collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Charlie Byrd, and Lionel Hampton. The saxophonist's superlative 1967 quartet recording Sweet Rain can be overlooked but Getz afficionados recognize its quality. Standing in the shadow of the unprecedented mainstream success of Getz's bossa period that came before, the Creed Taylor produced Sweet Rain is as perfect a straight-ahead date as the leader ever made, with a remarkable young band including pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate providing crackling energy that clearly inspired Getz to new heights of expression.

Sun Ra & His Astro Infinity Arkestra – Strange Strings – Expanded Edition 2xLP (Cosmic Myth)

For this album, Sun Ra collected an arsenal of exotic string instruments and handed them out to his Arkestra on the precept that "strings could touch people in a special way." That the Arkestrans didn't know how to play or tune these instruments was not beside the point - it was the point. Ra framed it "a study in ignorance." The result was primitive, yet sophisticated; brutal, yet highly sensitive. In his essay for this expanded edition of the 1967 Saturn LP, musician-curator David Toop calls Strange Strings "saturated in mystery."
