Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Washed Out - Purple Noon CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Washed Out is Atlanta-based producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Ernest Greene. Over the course of three uniquely enchanting, critically lauded albums and an EP, the music he makes has proved both transportive and visual, each new effort inviting listeners into immersive, self-contained universes. Each Washed Out release has been rooted in a form of escapism, but coupled with a new layer of emotional intensity, Purple Noon takes the project's music to dazzling new heights. The coastlines of the Mediterranean inspire Purple Noon, and Greene pays tribute to the region's distinct island culture - with all of its rugged elegance and old-world charm - and uses it as a backdrop to tell the album's stories of passion, love, and loss (its title comes from the 1960 film directed by Rene Clement, which is based on the novel The Talented Mister Ripley by Patricia Highsmith).

Glass Animals - Dreamland CD/LP (Republic)
Dreamland is the hotly anticipated follow-up to Glass Animals' highly acclaimed 2016 album How To Be a Human Being. Album track "Tokyo Drifting" features a collaboration with rapper Denzel Curry.Dreamland marks the first album from the Oxford quartet since drummer Joe Seaward was severely injured in 2018 after being hit by a truck while riding his bike in Dublin. The incident forced Glass Animals to cancel a series of support slots with Beck and dates at the Pohoda, Open'er and Mad Cool festival.

Clint Black - Out Of Sane LP (Black Top)
23rd studio album by the country music icon. Out Of Sane features 11 new songs co-written by Clint, as well as a cover of "Everybody's Talkin'", which was featured in the 1969 film, Midnight Cowboy, and earned singer Harry Nilsson a Grammy in 1970.

Blakk Soul - Take Your Time LP (Mello Music Group)
Take Your Time is Blakk Soul's MMG debut and is as musically sophisticated and seasoned as any in the genre. The record's sultry melodies are colorful and refreshing, a dripping wet bedroom masterpiece that combines R&B, neo-soul, and hip-hop rhythms to perfection.

Joe Bonamassa - A New Day Now CD (J&R Adventures)
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of his 2000 debut album, A New Day Yesterday, Joe Bonamassa releases a newly re-mixed and re-recorded version entitled, A New Day Now. [Vinyl edition due August 28.]

[Limited black and yellow swirl colored, and clear vinyl pressings are available.]

Luke Bryan - Born Here Live Here Die Here CD (Capitol Nashville)
The new release from the country superstar includes the #1 hit "Knockin' Boots" and his current single "Whatever She Wants Tonight".

Ceu - Apka! LP (Six Degrees)
Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. The fifth album from Sao Paulo's singer/composer Ceu brings together sonic, thematic and conceptual extremes. It reveals an artist passing through her past musical trips, eventually leaving her chrysalis, transformed and ready for a new phase. The title is based on a made-up word shouted by Ceu's youngest child, Antonino, which expresses complete satisfaction.

Deep Purple - Whoosh! CD+DVD (earMUSIC)
Whoosh! sees Deep Purple for the third time joining forces with producer Bob Ezrin, who invited the band to Nashville to write and record new songs. Together they created the most versatile album in their collaboration. Deep Purple "stretched out in all directions" without any limitation, letting their creativity go. "Deep Purple is putting the Deep back in Purple" was the half-joking motto in the studio after the first songs made it clear that Ezrin and Purple were on their path to creating an album pushing the boundaries of time, while voicing their resentment about the current situation of the world and addressing all generations. [Limited indie store exclusive vinyl pressing available for special order.]

Empress Of - I'm Your Empress Of LP (Terrible Records/XL)
Released digitally in April, now available on vinyl. Under the name Empress Of, Honduran-American songwriter, musician and producer Lorely Rodriguez creates introspective, self-empowering pop music centered on her impressive, acrobatic vocals. Her third LP, I'm Your Empress Of, comes on the heels of touring with Lizzo, Blood Orange, Maggie Rogers and Mura Masa and follows her collaborations with Khalid, MØ, DJDS and her song "Wild Girl" with Kito.

A Grape Dope - Arthur King Presents A Grape Dope: Backyard Bangers LP (Dangerbird)
A Grape Dope (John Herndon of Tortoise)'s installment in our Arthur King Presents experimental album series. Herndon describes it as a collage of sounds - found and recorded in various places and in various ways and then glued together with some rhythm, some space, melody, harmony, noise, adding, "I hope it reads like a slice of my record collection - hip hop, punk, disco jazz, metal, noise, house, techno, comedy, various others."

Helvetia - This Devastating Map LP (Joyful Noise)
Helvetia ditches conventional song structure in favor of bouts of repetition which rewards the listener with unlikely hooks, juxtaposing memorable figures with odd shapes that desire repeated listens.

Inventions - Continuous Portrait LP+MP3 (Temporary Residence)
On their first album together since Maze Of Woods (2015), Matthew Robert Cooper (Eluvium) and Mark T. Smith (Explosions In The Sky) further their creative curiosities as Inventions.Continuous Portrait whirls and hums like Cooper and Smith want us to invoke our inner playfulness and welcome a greater joy into our lives, if only for a moment.

Jaye Jayle - Prisyn LP (Sargent House)
Evan Patterson has always been a wanderer and an explorer. It's evident in the constant evolution of his music since his earliest days as a guitarist in left-of-center bands, but it's best exemplified by the constant creative shifts within the fever-dream blues of Jaye Jayle. On the newest Jaye Jayle album, Prisyn - Patterson takes his boldest leap into unknown territories, capturing immediate moments in his ever-shifting surroundings with the most basic tool at his disposal: the GarageBand app on an iPhone. Instead of his usual backing band, he paired up with Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe, White Horse) as collaborator and producer to create an electronic album completely unlike anything else in Patterson's discography.

Jenny O. - New Truth CD/LP (Mama Bird)
Third album from the L.A. singer/songwriter, who inexplicably lost her hearing in her right ear, permanently. New Truth is, in essence, a cathartic album full of sunny melodies that effortlessly blend psych, folk, and grunge. It is also a testament to the ability to bounce back from life's slings and arrows and celebrate its minor victories. It proves that restraint and serenity rather than egregious caterwauling can be a far more effective method of conveying emotion and Jenny O's honeyed vocals are a soothing, calming and grounding presence throughout the album.

Laura Marling - Songs For Our Daughter CD/LP (Chrysalis/Partisan)
Laura Marling's exquisite seventh album Song For Our Daughter arrives almost without pre-amble or warning amidst uncharted global chaos, and yet instantly and tenderly offers a sense of purpose, clarity and calm. As a balm for the soul, this full-blooded new collection could be posited as Laura's richest to date, but in truth it is another incredibly fine record by a British artist who rarely strays from delivering incredibly fine records. Taking much of the production reins herself, alongside long-time collaborators Ethan Johns and Dom Monks, Laura has layered up lush string arrangements and a broad sense of scale to these songs without losing any of the intimacy or reverence we've come to anticipate and almost take for granted from her throughout the past decade.

Jason Molina - Eight Gates CD/LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)
Eight Gates is the last collection of solo studio recordings Molina made before he passed from complications related to alcoholism in 2013. [Available on strawberry shortcake splash vinyl.]

Alison Mosshart - Sound Wheel LP (Third Man)
Sound Wheel is artist and musician Alison Mosshart's first solo spoken word album and companion piece to her new printed collection of paintings, photographs, short stories and poetry, Car Ma. It's an album about cars, rock n' roll, and love. It's an album about America, performance, and life on the road. It's an album about fender bender portraiture, story tellin' tire tracks, and the never-ending search for the spirit under the hood. Mosshart imagines the auto body shop like some other Coney Island. And America's highways - the last great roller coasters. She shows us that the engine on fire is connected to the guitar feeding back since birth. And the sensation of walking on stage and facing an audience is like the laugh before the scream in a car without brakes.  [Available on indie exclusive gray marble vinyl.]

Public Eye - Music For Leisure LP (Run For Cover)
Public Eye's Music For Leisure sees the Portland-based punk outfit taking a brazen stance against conscienceless capitalist mores in their most overt, outward-facing release to date. Formed in 2015 by vocalist/guitarist Nick Vicario, drummer Seve Sheldon, and guitarist Adam Becker, the group's second full-length LP was recorded following the addition of bassist Samia Bradley and was mixed by Grace Coleman. Indebted to the likes of Wire and the Killed By Death compilation series, Public Eye resurfaces on Music For Leisure with a more deliberate sound - subdued in its maturity and propelled forward by Vicario's gritty vocals and barbed lyricism.

Kenny Roby - The Reservoir 2xLP (The Royal Potato Family)
These 16 tunes collectively summon the wealth of Roby's experience, as a human being and as a musician. He revisits the specter of addiction with the fractured gothic gospel of "All Trains Lead to Cocaine" and recognizes that recovery is a constant process during the springy folk-pop charmer, "Just Because". He questions the roots of faith and recognizes the goodness of the universe in the preternaturally graceful "Watchin' Over Me" and sets his sights on contentment for the tender "Old Love". He sings all these songs with the wisdom of lived experience, a gift and tool for you to use.

Video Age - Pleasure Line LP (Winspear)
Video Age's third album pairs neon-bright '80s pop melodies with a vast range of influences (including Janet Jackson, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney) to create an optimistic sound all their own. Their catchy, memorable songs radiate a big "glass half-full" energy. [Limited purple colored vinyl pressing.]

Marcin Wasilewski Trio & Joe Lovano - Arctic Riff LP (ECM)
Recently released on CD - now available on vinyl. The first-time teaming of Poland's dynamic Marcin Wasilewski Trio and big-toned US tenorist Joe Lovano brings forth special music of concentrated, deep feeling, in which lyricism and strength seem ideally balanced. The alliance plays four new tunes by Marcin and one by Joe, as well as Carla Bley's classic "Vashkar" plus collective improvisations with strong input from all four players; Slawomir Kurkiewicz's bass skills are particularly well-deployed in the spontaneous piece "Arco".

Becoming X was commercially successful in the United Kingdom, while "6 Underground" and "Spin Spin Sugar" would become hits in the United States.

The Stooges - Live At Goose Lake: August 8th, 1970 CD/LP (Third Man)
The apocryphal tale of the Stooges performance at the Goose Lake festival on August 8th, 1970 has been told countless times over the past five decades. Bassist Dave Alexander, due to nerves or overindulgence or whatever you choose to fill in the blank, absolutely spaces in front of 200,000 attendees. He does not play a single note on stage. He is summarily fired by Iggy Pop immediately following the gig. Here starts the beginning of the end of the Stooges. Found buried in the basement of a Michigan farmhouse amongst other tasty analog artifacts of the same era, the 1/4" stereo two-track tape of the Stooges complete performance at Goose Lake is the Rosetta Stone for fans of this seminal band. Not only is this the last ever performance of the original godhead Stooges line-up, but it is the only known soundboard recording of said line-up. Playing the entirety of their canonical 1970 masterpiece Fun House, the sound, the performance, everything about this record is revelatory. [Limited indie store exclusive pressing on grey/cream vinyl. Standard black will be in next week.]
