Dale Crover – Glossolalia LP (Joyful Noise)

Dale Crover's (Melvins) third LP under his own name and arguably his most focused statement yet as a solo artist: 11 catchy yet eccentric tracks that move from Nuggets-y garage rock to crafty proto-metal riffage and gorgeously hazy psych-pop, touching on everything from a bad teenage trip to the charms of the late, great Jane Birkin, and featuring input by illustrious guests including Ty Segall, Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and none other than Tom Waits.

Cursive – Devourer CD/LP (Run For Cover)

Very few bands manage to last decades, and for the ones that do, it's often easy to settle down and get a little too comfortable. But there's nothing comfortable about Devourer, the explosive new album from Cursive. The iconic Omaha group is known for their intensity, ambition, and execution, and has spent 30 years creating a bold discography that's defined as much by its cathartic sound as its weighty, challenging lyrical themes. And Devourer is as daring as ever. Full of intense and incisive songs, the album proves exactly why Cursive have been so influential and enduring-and why they remain so vital today. [Limited edition red/black vinyl.]

In the album's oddly stirring climax, Early delivers a sermon on the emptiness of millennial culture, pleading to the Brooklyn crowd, "We have to get serious! Before it's too late! And our gravestones read: Because Cancer." Produced by Tony Berg (Boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers) and co-written with Liam Howe (Adele, Lana Del Rey, MARINA), each track is meant to depict a different character who is an outcast. These songs explore issues of feeling alienated, frustrations with society, and a hopeful romantic longing aided by plenty of charisma.

Rebecca Frazier – Boarding Windows In Paradise CD/LP (Amtoco)

Grounded in her roots as a native Virginian, bluegrass trailblazer Rebecca Frazier found herself reawakening to a whole new journey of inspiration and invention. For the flatpicking luminary, who achieved notoriety in the music world as the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine, that creative rebirth turned into her most captivating work yet.

Gardens & Villa – Ultra Terrestrial LP (Gardens & Villa)

Color vinyl pressing. Some band names take on a talismanic quality, revealing mystical depths the musicians may never have intended. For Gardens & Villa, the name became downright prophetic. The quartet took their moniker from Villa Avenue, where they first shared a home - and a garden - in Santa Barbara, California. Now, a decade and a half later, the band releases their fifth album, Ultra Terrestrial. The record finds Gardens & Villa returning to the roots of their namesake, highlighting the expansive growth they've weathered, and the familial bonds they've forged over their 15 years together.

Ghostface Killah – Set The Tone (Guns & Roses) CD/LP (Mass Appeal)

Ghostface is ready to "Set The Tone" with his new album, featuring a blend of tracks catering to both male and female audiences. Expect a mix of hard-hitting New York rap and melodic, laid-back records. Additionally, Ghostface has collaborated with hip-hop heavyweights such as Nas, Kanye West, Ja Rule, and many others. [Limited edition red & black marbled vinyl.]

Ginger Root – Shinbangumi CD (Ghostly International)

Step inside the world of Ginger Root. Cameron Lew makes it easy to do so; every considered detail is his own manifestation, written, designed, and executed as an all-encompassing diorama of sound and sight. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and visual artist from Southern California, Lew has crafted his project steadily since 2017, inviting a fervent and growing legion of fans into storylines drawn across mediums: captivating albums with accompanying films and globe-spanning tours. The Ginger Root sound — handmade yet immaculately polished synth-pop, alt-disco, boogie, and soul — takes shape through Lew's lens as an Asian-American growing up enamored by 1970s and '80s music, specifically the creative and cultural dialogue between Japanese city pop and its Western counterparts from French pop to Philly soul to Ram-era McCartney. [A multicolor vinyl edition is available for special order.]

Ben Goldsmith – The Start Of Something Beautiful CD (Sony Music Nashville)

A dynamic performer and prodigious talent, Goldsmith developed this new album with celebrated creators such as Dan Wilson (Taylor Swift, Adele), Rick Nowels (Lana Del Rey), and Alex Hope (Troye Sivan, Alec Benjamin) to name a few. Spanning heartbreak rockers, coming-of-age anthems, first love swooners, and more, The Start Of Something Beautiful highlights Goldsmith’s once-in-a-generation musicianship and songwriting as the 18-year-old has writing credits on every track and produced nearly half the record.

Hello Mary – Emita Ox CD/LP (French Kiss)

Hello Mary: "Hello Mary, a three-woman New York City band, whipsaws through a raucous embrace of uncertainty in '0%. It peaks with the drummer and singer Stella Wave screaming, 'I don't know! I don't know!' But within less than three minutes the track also jumps amid spindly indie-rock guitar chords, a bruising one-note bass riff and an unexpected dip into folky picking joined by a plinking vibraphone - all while making a waltz sound feral." [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

Jade Hairpins – Get Me The Good Stuff LP (Merge)

Jade Hairpins waste no time fulfilling their second album's titular demand. From its harmony-drenched opening note to its baroque-anthemic conclusion, Get Me The Good Stuff is positively loaded with musical ideas, an absurdist buffet of sound and aesthetic that comes with one hell of a floorshow as the Hairpins stack those ideas higher and higher, almost daring them to crash to the floor. Instead, those elements-punksploitation, power pop, baggy, funk, and Italo disco are just some touchstones - are not only held aloft, but they also defy gravity and convention.

Hollow Coves – Blessings 12” (Nettwerk)

Orange vinyl. Hollow Coves, The Brisbane folk duo-Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins-carry light within an eloquent, engaging, and entrancing take on indie folk, as evidenced by the five songs that comprise their EP Blessings. Most of the songs on Blessings were written during the Covid-19 lockdown and recorded and self-produced at the band's newly built home studio on Australia's Gold Coast.

The Jesus Lizard – Rack CD/LP (Ipecac)

Formed in 1987 and known for their crazy live show, the Jesus Lizard is returning with their first new music since 1998. The Jesus Lizard is one of the leading noise rock bands of all time, influencing newer acts such as Idles and Fucked Up. The band has also had their time in the mainstream with a split release with Nirvana, and David Yow has recently done guest vocals on an Idles album and is an actor appearing in the remake of Toxic Avenger and other indie films such as Dinner In America and Rattlesnake. Since their initial breakup, they have reformed for tours in 2008 and then again in 2017-2019. [Indie store exclusive silver vinyl.]

Alicia Keyes / Shoshana Bean / Maleah Joi Moon – Hell’s Kitchen (Original Broadway Cast Recording) CD (UMG)

The 13 Tony-nominated Broadway musical is a coming-of-age story based on the life of Alicia Keys featuring her iconic hits including "Fallin'," "If I Ain't Got You" and more reimagined! In the mid '90s, in an apartment high above the energy and grit of Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, 17-year-old Ali squints toward the horizon until she can just see the Hudson River. Despite the warnings of her protective mother, the symphony of the street calls to her - promising freedom, excitement, and the possibility of love. Finding herself. When a wise piano teacher helps her find her voice, Ali learns she can make the city her own.

Lady Blackbird – Slang Spirituals CD/LP (BMG)

Collaborating once again with Black Acid Soul producer Chris Seefried, the pair produce a second album that not only embodies the freewheeling, emotive Lady Blackbird sound, but that also taps into deeply vulnerable lyrics that recount the singer’s challenging ascent to musical stardom. Across 11 tracks Lady Blackbird puts her sweeping, cinematic vocal power to use on everything from the soulful orchestral fanfares of “Let Not (Your Heart Be Troubled)” to the finger-picking folk storytelling of “Man On A Boat”, euphoric gospel empowerment of “Like A Woman” and the seven-minute psychedelic soul instrumental of “When The Game Is Played On You”. [A clear vinyl pressing is available.]

Miranda Lambert – Postcards From Texas CD/2xLP (Republic)

Postcards From Texas captures the country siren's freewheeling, funny, at times feisty take on swing, shuffles, bluegrass and ballads with unbridled gusto. [Limited edition sea blue vinyl.]

Nick Lowe – Indoor Safari CD/LP (Yep Roc)

Nick Lowe returns with Indoor Safari, his first studio album in over a decade. Backed on every track by Nick's trusted collaborators Los Straitjackets, Nick exhibits his razorsharp songwriting ability through a multitude of sonic environments. [Limited edition yellow vinyl.]

Marcin – Dragon Harmony CD/LP (Masterworks)

Marcin effortlessly blends melody, harmony, and hand-drum-style percussion across a genre-fluid collection of original compositions and covers on Dragon in Harmony.

Melvins – Bad Moon Rising CD/LP (Ipecac)

Six brand new songs. The best part about a new Melvins album is that you're never quite sure what you're going to get. That's the genius of these guys. With Bad Mood Rising it's a tuned down rock and roll nightmare. Big riffs and scary vocals.

The Mystery Lights – Purgatory CD/LP+MP3 (Wick)

The Mystery Lights return with their most ambitious offering to date. With Wayne Gordon back in the producer's chair, the group delivers an eclectic mix of real-deal psychedelia, punk, art rock, and even a splash of country via the Kinks(y) pop earworm "I'm Sorry I Forgot Your Name". The psychedelic highlights of the album, "Purgatory", "Cerebral Crack" and "Can't Sleep Through the Silence", are dark and trippy, landing somewhere between the guitar-driven, lysergic mayhem of the 13th Floor Elevators and the punked-up, tongue-in-cheek insanity of The Monks. But throughout there's a cohesiveness threaded by the elevated musicianship, earnest lyrics and attention to detail that make for a fiercely raw, yet unabashedly catchy album–dripping with all the sing along hooks that have made Mystery Lights one of the most exciting live bands on the scene. [Limited edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Nada Surf – Moon Mirror CD/LP (New West)
Nada Surf – Moon Mirror: Reflection 2xCD/2xLP (New West)

Moon Mirror, Nada Surf’s new record, has everything fans love and expect from them. Bittersweet anthems that begin quiet but explode into soaring harmonies? Check. Songs that are play-on-repeat heart punches? Check. Songs that are poetic and thought-provoking while also being absolute belt-at-the-top-of-your-voice-with-the-windows-down masterpieces? Check. It’s all here. Moon Mirror is a thrilling and moving leap forward for Nada Surf. The songs on the album are true to the human experience—as meaningful and mysterious and sometimes absurd as it is. There’s love, yes, but also grief, deep loneliness, doubt, wonder, and hope. [Deluxe CD and vinyl (including galaxy splatter vinyl) versions feature 10 Mirror Mirror demos. A single-LP coke bottle clear pressing is also available.] Don’t miss Matthew Caws when he joins us for a free, live, in-store performance tomorrow, Saturday, September 14th, at 5PM!

Oceans Of Slumber – Where Gods Fear To Speak CD/LP (Season Of Mist)

Recorded in Bogota, Colombia, in 2023, Where Gods Fear To Speak is a multi-faceted entry into Oceans Of Slumber’s burgeoning legacy. Many of the melodic and textural elements that made Starlight & Ash such a revelation are still present, but scabrous brutality and complex, cultured arrangements are back with a vengeance. With Cammie’s astonishing vocal blend of vulnerability and abominable power, these songs are the best possible showcase for a band on an unerring mission to win the world over.

Porches – Shirt CD/LP (Domino)

Part angsty fantasy, part confessional melodrama, Shirt – the sixth studio album from Porches – is a rock album that oscillates between reality and make-believe to reflect both the innocence of suburban youth and the frayed reality of adulthood. A fusion of chaotic impulses, insatiable desires, and a perpetual yearning, Shirt plays with the tension between one's person and persona – the weight of your dreams crashing up against your reality. The result is something both familiar and uncanny, an anthemic tribute to this intrinsic duality built on crashing and caressing sounds. Grungy guitars that shine with a menacing glint, drums and bass that punch you warmly in the stomach, interspersed with moments of eerie calmness to create a physical sense of tension and release that resonates with each track. [Limited edition ‘precious pink’ vinyl.]

Nala Sinephro – Endlessness CD/LP (Warp)

Nala Sinephro’s sophomore album, titled Endlessness, expands her scope from the inward journey of Space 1.8 into widescreen orchestral ambient jazz compositions. Consisting of 10 tracks, the music was composed, produced, mixed and recorded by Nala Sinephro and includes contributions from James Mollison (Ezra Collective), Morgan Simpson (black midi), Sheila Maurice-Grey (Kokoroko), Nubya Garcia, Lyle Barton, Natcyet Wakili (Sons of Kemet) and Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic).

Slum Village - F.U.N. LP (Ne'Astra Music Group)

The 12-track project is their first album in nearly ten years and includes fresh collaborations with Larry June, Cordae, Eric Roberson, Robert Glasper , Karriem Riggins, Abstract Orchestra, Sango, Phat Kat, Daru Jones, Earlly Mac, The Dramatics and more. F.U.N. finds Slum Village expanding on their signature sound, but still staying close to their hometown roots: Young RJ explains- “We wanted to just try something new, so we focused on making Disco-inspired music,” and T3 notes that the record- ing process all “began with collecting old Disco records.”

Snow Patrol – The Forest Is The Path CD/2xLP (Polydor)

Band members, including singer Stuart Staples, emphasize the collaborative nature of the creation process, fostering a dynamic dialogue that shapes their music. [An eco mix color vinyl pressing is available.]

TR/ST – Performance CD/LP (Dais)

The 4th full-length studio album by Robert Alfons aka TR/ST (fka Trust), Performance, sinks even further into the nasty synth-pop psychodrama that the project has pioneered and, finally, perfected across over a decade of evolution. Recorded in Los Angeles, the songs seethe with dread, lust, reckoning, and abandon, backlit by the light pollution of a thousand dead end city streets. Alfons co-produced the collection with versatile composer and producer Nightfeelings, achieving a thick, smoky balance of eerie synths, fog machine low end, and bruised, crooning voice.

Josh Turner – This Country Music Thing LP (MCA Nashville)

Gold vinyl. This Country Music Thing is Josh Turner’s 10th studio album and the first new music since his 2017 album, Deep South. Produced by Kenny Greenberg, it features 11 tracks – including the new single, “Heatin’ Things Up,” which was released in April.

Watchhouse – This Side Of Jordan LP (Yep Roc)

Yellow vinyl. At its core, Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) is a duo - Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz - from Chapel Hill, NC. Their harmonies are ethereal, their chemistry vibrant, recalling the atmosphere invoked by classic duos such as Emmylou Harris and Gram Parsons, or Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Andrew and Emily provide the foundation of the group's timeless Americana sound, while enlisting a full band to flesh out their dynamics.

Suki Waterhouse – Memoir Of Sparklemuffin CD/LP/Cassette (Sub Pop)

Suki Waterhouse’s music sounds like a collage of her inspirations, experiences, and emotions stitched together by honeyed vocal delivery, bright-eyed melodies, and evocative storytelling. It doubles as a mirror image of her life as a consummate creative, artist, actress, model, and mother, yet it also breaks the glass to unveil raw truth. She leans on an ever-evolving sonic palette to convey what she’s feeling—whether it be folky Americana, ‘90s alternative, turn-of-the-century indie, or handcrafted otherworldly pop. You’ll hear Suki’s longing in a swooning chorus, fearlessness in a crunchy chord, elation in a danceable waltz, and wonder in a soft coo befitting of a lullaby. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]

Willie Watson – Willie Watson CD/LP (Thirty Tigers/Little Operation Records And More)

After 30 years of playing music professionally, Willie Watson is releasing his debut album. A founding member of Old Crow Medicine Show, and a staple on the folk and americana circuit – Willie is no stranger to the stage and to audiences. But this is his first album of original music, aptly self-titled, and a bold and confident statement in both song mastery and sonics. This record is about beating the devil. Willie didn’t make any specific pact with him, but he had been tangled up with him his whole life. This album is about finding himself free of that devil and learning to love himself again. It is about no longer leaning on old sounds and old folk singers and the music they made, and instead about learning to express himself freely and without limits. Willie Watson will join us for a free, live in-store performance next Tuesday, September 17th, at 4PM, followed by a record signing. Order your copy now for your wristband to go through the signing line!

Jack White – No Name CD (Third Man)

Now available on CD. Jack White's back in a big, big way. Here he slides back into the raw, blown out garage rock that he's so well known for, and man does it sound good. The riffs are piled high all over this album and he's never sounded so urgent and utterly relevant. Everything distorts in just the right places and the hooks are guaranteed to stay in your head for a long, long time. He's stripped everything back and come back bigger, badder and better than ever. 2024 needs this man big time.

Allah-Las – Worship The Sun [Reissue/2014] LP (RHR Cat)

Orange vinyl. Allah-Las' second album, Worship The Sun, expands on the sound established by their maiden effort, honing their fusion of West Coast garage rock & roll, Latin percussion and electric folk. As richly textured and timeless as a Southern California beach break, the songs are evocative of Los Angeles' storied past. Beatniks, artists, surfers, nomads. Remnants of a bygone Sunset Strip. Golden tans and cosmic sunsets. One can feel the warmth of the sun, but the band deftly avoids the kitsch so often indulged by lovers of these things. Hints of Byrds, Love, Felt, and those who follow are threaded into the tapestry.

Tori Amos – Unrepentant Geraldines CD/2xLP (Mercury)

Expanded edition. Released in 2014 by Decca Records, Unrepentant Geraldines marked Tori Amos' return to pop and rock music after several releases in the classical genre. From their debut single, "The Mississippi," through 1994's eponymous debut, 1998's Vermillion, 2001's Better Day, and Nineteen Ninety-Three (recorded in that year, but released a decade later), the Drifters' line-up may have been fluid, but their sound always instantly identifiable, comforting, and just plain fantastic. R.A.N. - Gotta Be Lyrical LP (Now-Again)

Hailing from Memphis, TN, Gotta Be Lyrical is the sole offering by Lil Ced and Big

Syl known as R.A.N. Originally released in 1993 on cassette, this hazy southern horrorcore rap album is seeing its first release on vinyl. This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to produce some of the most distinctive music of the 90s. This was a unique hip-hop strain - visceral and often vicious. It was a local, low-fi, cassette-tape based movement - yet it went on to change the course of rap music. Orange vinyl pressing.

Diana Ross and The Supremes – Love Child [Reissue/1968] LP (Anagram/Elemental/Motown)

Love Child, the fifteenth studio album released by Diana Ross and The Supremes for the Motown label in 1968, was the group’s first studio LP not to include any songs written or produced by the Holland–Dozier–Holland production team, who had previously overseen most of the Supremes’ releases. Love Child shows a markedly different sound for The Supremes, eschewing the soul-pop sound for a more distinct, personal sound and lyrics.

Velvet Revolver – Contraband [Reissue/2004] 2xLP (Sony Legacy)

Velvet Revolver's debut album, Contraband, originally released in 2004, is mixed elements of hard rock, grunge, and alternative metal to create a sound that was truly groundbreaking. The collaboration between iconic musicians-Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum of Guns N' Roses fame, alongside Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and Dave Kushner-brings a fusion of unparalleled talent and experience.

Tom Verlaine – Songs And Other Things [Reissue/2006] LP (Real Gone Music)

“The true test of originality for any musician comes when you hear an instrument being played and you instantly know who’s playing it. For electric guitarists, certainly Hendrix qualifies; Page and Clapton, too. Maybe Eddie Van Halen before the legion of imitators. You probably have your own list, but to us, standing toe-to-toe (or pick-to-pick) with those legends is Television guitarist and solo artist Tom Verlaine. His self-taught, jazz-influenced style, largely devoid of effects, and vibrato tone (oh, that tone!) makes any Verlaine solo unmistakably a Verlaine solo. That he was quite an accomplished, idiosyncratic songwriter is just a bonus.” [Limited edition teal color vinyl.]
