Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society – Dynamic Maximum Tension 2xCD (Nonesuch)
Composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue and his Secret Society ensemble make their Nonesuch Records debut with Dynamic Maximum Tension. The album pays homage to some of Argue's key influences with original songs dedicated to R. Buckminster Fuller, Alan Turing, and Mae West. Fellow Nonesuch artist Cécile McLorin Salvant, with whom Argue collaborated on her long-form musical fable Ogresse, joins the ensemble for "Mae West: Advice". Dynamic Maximum Tension's eleven tracks, on two CDs, also include a response to Duke Ellington's "Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue" titled "Tensile Curves", among other original songs.
Bar Italia – Tracey Denim LP (Matador)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Tracey Denim was recorded and produced by Bar Italia with mixing from Marta Salogni. It features the single "Nurse!" which was released in March to acclaim and described as "a hypnotic post-punk ballad" (The Guardian) and "narcotically arresting" (Pitchfork).
Courtney Barnett – End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club) LP (Mom & Pop Music)
Clear vinyl pressing. Anonymous Club is Danny Cohen's candid documentary about the personal travails and hard-fought triumphs of Courtney Barnett, as she rose through the ranks of indie rock during the last decade. A cautiously redemptive portrait, any happy ending reflects the possibilities of fulfillment and stability, not the things themselves. In May 2021, months before the film's release, Courtney Barnett and collaborator Stella Mozgawa rendezvoused with Cohen in Melbourne to shape a score that fit that premise-nothing too obvious or instructive, to tell the audience how they should feel. Barnett found she liked listening to what the duo had made, existing within its reflective gaze. She began sorting through those little instrumentals like amoebic puzzle pieces, figuring out how they fit into a full picture. The result is a seamless series of 17 instrumental improvisations called End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club), soundtrack reimagined as impressionistic sound-art collage.
Black Market Brass – Hox CD/LP (Colemine)
Hox is a new take on afrobeat that combines traditional grooves with heavy, hypnotic, sci-fi sounds that reflect the band's myriad of influences as record collectors across genres. "We didn't leave the traditional afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation." Shared saxophonist Cole Pulice. Like their previous albums, the nine-piece band recorded Hox live to tape. "The sound and aesthetic of the analog recording process is important for this kind of music," Pulice explained. "We're looking to capture lightning in a bottle." With that, the album features several sections of heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars, and a burning percussion section that pays homage to the traditional drumming cultures of Nigeria and Ghana. The performances are dynamic and confident. The grooves are infectious and hypnotic. [Limited-edition “antifreeze green” vinyl.]
The Blind Boys Of Alabama – Echoes Of The South CD/LP (Single Lock)
Hailed as "gospel titans" by Rolling Stone, The Blind Boys Of Alabama defied the considerable odds stacked against them in the segregated South, working their way up from singing for pocket change to performing for three different presidents over the course of an 80-year career that saw them break down racial barriers, soundtrack the Civil Rights movement, and help redefine modern gospel music forever. The five-time Grammy-winner’s latest album, Echoes Of The South, draws its name from the Birmingham radio program that hosted the group's very first professional performance back in 1944. Pairing traditional spirituals and long-lost gospel classics with vintage soul and R&B tunes, the collection is as moving as it is timeless, transcending genre and era to touch something deep and fundamental about the human condition.
Boris – Heavy Rocks [Reissue/2002] CD/2xLP (Third Man)
Formed in 1992, Boris boldly explores their own vision of heavy music, where words like "explosive" and "thunderous" barely do justice. Using overpowering soundscapes embellished with copious amounts of lighting and billowing smoke, Boris has shared with audiences across the planet an experience for all five senses in their concerts, earning legions of zealous fans along the way. This is the highly requested, unbelievably anticipated official vinyl release of Boris's 2002 album and first dive into the stoner rock idiom, originally released in Japan on CD only. Heavy Rocks (2002) is heavy, sure, but fuses sludge, noise, stoner rock and hardcore all together for a deeply bone-shaking and unforgettable trip. For fans of: Melvins, Kyuss, Fu Manchu. [Indie store exclusive orange vinyl.]

Brandy Clark – Brandy Clark LP (WB)
Released in May on CD – now available on vinyl. “In both content and style, Brandy Clark’s self-titled new album serves as a homecoming following three bold, loosely conceptual releases that situated her in a lane distinct from the parochial strictures of country radio. Not only does the album find her singing openly about her background, including her family (‘She Smoked In The House’) and home state of Washington (‘Northwest’), it also hews closer to country conventions than her prior releases. While a self-titled album is often intended as a defining creative statement, a summation of an artist’s legacy or style, Brandy Clark is more uncharacteristic. Instead of foregrounding Clark’s knack for wordplay and humor, the album announces the singer as a virtuosa, engaging with country music’s well-worn tropes with both skill and refinement.” – Victoria Stevens, Slant
The Crave – Inner War Delerium LP (Heat Crimes)
For over two decades Jonathan Katsav has used his Crave project to fray rap at its fringes, using Memphis and Houston's low-and-slow legacy to inform sounds that have as much in common with Merzbow as they do Tommy Wright III. Working under a variety of different monikers such as Lieu Noir, Sniper Bait and Soul Collector, the French producer is most prolific as Crave, and Inner War Delirium is a substantial and broadly cinematic addition to his canon.

Deeper – Careful! CD/LP+MP3/Cassette (Sub Pop)
You can't get Deeper if you're standing still. That's intentional, says the Chicago quartet's Nic Gohl. "Does it feel good when you're listening to this song? Does your body want to move with it?" These are the questions he asked himself as he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride, and Kevin Fairbairn were writing and recording Careful!, their third record and Sub Pop debut. "I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it," Gohl adds. "It's pop music, basically." [Limited “Loser Edition” smog color vinyl.]

Kristin Hersh – Clear Pond Road CD/LP (Fire)
Kristin Hersh’s new album is a cinematic road trip; a series of personal vignettes from a fiercely independent auteur, sitting plush with layers of all-consuming strings and mellotron. It’s a watershed moment in a career overflowing with creative firsts and inspirational thinking; an elegant piece of personal reportage, a home movie caught in time. Previously, the juxtaposition of light and dark has been essential to the drama of Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE, but this solo set is something of a departure; more inward looking, quieter but outspoken, underpinned by background noise for ambience and awkwardness. Clear Pond Road is a life-affirming statement, a further part of the jigsaw, a very personal memoir, from street signs to snapshots; a late blossoming and coming-of-age from a true icon of independence. The record is both intimate yet expansive, written largely within the confines of Hersh’s home, making the proceedings ever more personal. [Limited-edition clear vinyl.]
Carly Rae Jepsen – The Loveliest Time CD/LP (Silent)
The Loveliest Time is the follow-up to 2022's The Loneliest Time, which continues in Jepsen's tradition of coupled releases - but this time they're not so much B-sides as they are a second chapter. The result is a sublime setting for Ledger’s layered meditations on loss and despair and the search for transcendence. [Indie store exclusive olive-green vinyl.]

Just prior to the pandemic, the multi-talented artist went to Nashville to record at Cowboy Jack Clement's legendary Sound Emporium Studio for what would become Dixie Blur (2020), a collection of songs that harkened back to his Southern roots, both musically and personally. Dixie Blur found Wilson reaching back to the musical foundation of his upbringing while simultaneously moving forward by infusing the music with modern textures and aesthetic soundscapes. “Eat The Worm feels like a celestial meeting point for Wilson, who has dipped a toe in jazz, country, psych rock, folk, roots, and pop.” – No Depression

An avid recordist, Abram taped concerts at The Matrix regularly and his recordings of The Doors, made between March 7-11, 1967, spawned one of the band’s most storied bootlegs. John Hartford – Aereo-Plain LP (Real Gone Music)
After penning the Glen Campbell mega-hit "Gentle On My Mind" and appearing repeatedly both on Glen's weekly variety show and on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, John Hartford could have taken the show biz glide path to financial security and ease. Instead, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and steamboat enthusiast) moved back to Nashville from L.A., signed a contract with Warner Bros., and proceeded to create one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums not just in bluegrass but in modern country music. 1971's Aereo-Plain assembled a veritable supergroup consisting of fiddler Vassar Clements, dobroist Tut Taylor, guitarist Norman Blake and bassist Randy Scruggs to play a set of mostly original tunes that were unlike anything the staid bluegrass community had ever heard before.
Marvelous 3 – Hey! Album [Reissue/1999] LP (Real Gone Music)
Pink color vinyl pressing. Before Butch Walker produced and/or wrote for such huge acts as Pink, Fall Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, Weezer, Green Day, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift, he fronted this fondly remembered power pop trio. Hey! Album actually first came out as an independent release in 1998, but the band re-recorded almost half of it when they signed to Elektra, who released it in 1999.

Paradox – Heresy [Reissue/1989] LP (Real Gone Music)
‘Inquisitor’s robe gray’ colorway. Want a little history lesson along with your thrash metal? This 1989 release from the German band Paradox is a full-fledged concept album, commemorating the 13th century Albigensian Crusade that sought to eliminate the heretical Cathar sect. And truly, no foe could withstand the twin guitar attack, soaring harmonies, and machine-like rhythm section of this band. Other like-minded members of this metal horde include Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus, but really, Heresy is a one-of-a-kind record, and a hard act to follow, as this was the last release from Paradox for eleven years.
The Postal Service – Everything Will Change CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Everything Will Change is a feature-length documentary concert film of The Postal Service’s performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA during their 2013 reunion tour. A collaboration between Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (from Dntel), with Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, The Postal Service released Give Up, their one and only album, in 2003. That record went on to sell over a million copies and most of the band’s fans never had the chance to see them perform live. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Give Up, the band reunited to tour the world. Everything Will Change captures one of the nights when everything did change. [Limited “Loser Edition” lavender/blue vinyl.]

Josh Rouse – 1972 [Reissue/2013] LP (Yep Roc)
Originally released in 2003, 1972 is a collection of songs that pay homage to the songwriters whose songs were popular on AM radio in the year he was born. Fluttering strings, hand claps, flutes and the production of Brad Jones provide the right atmosphere for this incredible batch of songs. Highlights include the singles "Love Vibration", "Come Back (Light Therapy)" and "Rise".
Al Stewart – Songs On The Radio – The Complete U.S. Singls 1974-1981 CD (Real Gone Music)

Thrice – The Artist In The Ambulance - Revisited LP (Miscellaneous)
A re-recorded version of the post-hardcore band’s third album. “What would it sound like to play these old songs after 20 years of playing and singing under our belts? We know that playing the revisionist is a dangerous game so we were always a little uneasy about trying to go back and mess with something that people loved, people who had none of the hang-ups about the record that we did. But, since we decided to do this anyway, we tried to let that wariness guide us in how we approached the record, and in the end we decided to make very minimal structural changes.”
Various Artists – A Mighty Wind: The Album LP (Real Gone Music)
Limited forest green color vinyl pressing. The key to the success of Christopher Guest's satirical comedies is that, not so deep down, he harbors real affection and deep understanding for the targets of his lampooning. So, while A Mighty Wind lay the hopelessly square excesses and petty jealousies of the early '60s folk movement bare for all to see, it also captured the naïve, yes, but charming idealism of the time... and wound up presenting performances that do such a good job of imitating the original recordings that inspired them that sometimes you had to squint pretty hard to see the wink and the nod behind the songs.
Various Artists – Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 6xLP (Smithsonian Folkways)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. In the 1950s and ‘60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other's homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert "Mack" McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians-many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio - McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 is the first compilation of music drawn from his legendary archive, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history.
