With Americana Fest dominating the local music scene this week, we’re getting in on the action with an afternoon event at Grimey’s featuring the Stax Soul Mobile and a couple of in-store performances. We hope you’ll take some time this coming Saturday, September 23rd, and stop by the shop and join in on the fun! The Stax Soul Mobile will be here on site from 1:00-5:00 PM for you to visit and learn about the history of this iconic soul label. At 2:00 PM Cam Pierce will play a free set inside Grimey’s, followed by a 3:00 PM live set by Lillie Mae.
Stax Records is one of the greatest and most influential independent record labels of the 20th Century. Its history as an iconic soul imprint has been long secure, giving us such artists as Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The MG’s, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Isaac Hayes, The Bar-Kays and so many more. Celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, TN, has launched its first-ever “Soul Mobile,” a traveling exhibit, gift shop, and DJ booth designed to take the Stax Records experience around the nation to festivals, record stores, radio stations, museums, and more. The Soul Mobile experience includes live vinyl soul DJs, exclusive merchandise designed by Memphis artist Mia Saine, and special guest appearances that will create a “party on wheels” with opportunities for giveaways and exclusive content. The Stax Soul Mobile will be parked at Grimey’s on Saturday, September 23rd, from 1:00-5:00 PM as part of our Americana event.
Cam Pierce is a songwriter first and foremost. His new album The Horseshoe was cut live in a log cabin in Leiper’s Fork, TN. The album is void of fancy production and technological "magic.” Live tracked and uncut, trimmed or smooshed, The Horseshoe is an honest to goodness OLD country record, not forced "retro" hoopla. From start to finish it's like stumbling upon some forgotten recordings from the bygone era of grit and individuality that once permeated the vast landscape of Country Music. We think you’ll dig Pierce and his country songs. He will perform at Grimey’s at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 23rd.
Lillie Mae has been performing on stages since she was literally a child. She grew up playing in her family’s band with her siblings. Mentored by Cowboy Jack Clement, she eventually formed the band Jypsi who released a major label album. Signed to Third Man Records in Nashville, Lillie Mae released 2 albums on Jack White’s label and toured with his band as well as with her own, including memorable in-store performances at Grimey’s. Mae has just released her brand new album Forever Eyes on digital services. Lillie Mae will take the Grimey’s stage at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 23rd.
IMPORTANT PARKING INFORMATION! Our parking lot is shared with other rad businesses and it is a finite space, so parking is limited. In addition to our lot, there is a paid parking lot behind Elegy Coffee and Mickey's on Gallatin Road that is a short walk from the shop. Please use EXTREME CAUTION if parking on the nearby, narrow neighborhood streets. Too many cars make these roads impassable and result in angry neighbors, the police being called, and cars being towed. There is a police office who lives in the neighborhood across the street from the store and his driveway has been blocked by event attendees 3 times so far in 2023 (!!!) We do not want anger or disrespect any of our neighbors, especially not that one. DO NOT BLOCK DRIVEWAYS OR PARK IN UNAPPROVED ALLEY SPACES or you will be swiftly towed. (This is no fun at all.) Please consider carpooling, ride-sharing, walking, biking, scooting, roller skating, or taking the bus to attend this Grimey’s event.
