Make plans to join us in the record store on Wednesday, March 18th at 4:00 PM when we welcome musician & author Neko Case to Grimey’s! She’ll be joined by Nashville based writer and music critic Ann Powers for a discussion about her recent memoir The Harder I Fight The More I Love You and her latest album, Neon Grey Midnight Green. Following their conversation both authors will be signing copies of their works for attendees. All who preorder Neko’s book or of her Anti- Records albums* in the shop or on our site here will receive a wristband for the signing. (*New LPs & CDs only.) Wristbands are required to participate in the signing for those 13+ and also guarantee your entrance to the event. (Kids under 12 don’t require a wristband if attending with a wistband-holding adult.)
Neko Case has long been revered as one of music’s most influential artists, whose authenticity, lyrical storytelling, and sly wit have endeared her to a legion of critics, musicians, and lifelong fans. In luminous, sharp-edged prose, Case shows readers what it’s like to be left alone for hours and hours as a child, to take refuge in the woods around her home, and to channel the monotony and loneliness and joy that comes from music, camaraderie, and shared experience into art. In The Harder I Fight The More I Love You Case brings her trademark candor and precision to a memoir that traces her evolution from an invisible girl “raised by two dogs and a space heater” in rural Washington state to her improbable emergence as an internationally-acclaimed talent. Neon Grey Midnight Green is Case’s ninth album. Produced by Case, the album pays tribute to the musicians, producers and activists who have passed away in recent years, all artists she was lucky enough to call not just influences but close friends. Neko rises on the shoulders of her musical heroes, using the tools they lent her to create her most inspired work. Neon Grey Midnight Green is her biggest-sounding and most intimate-feeling album yet.
Ann Powers has been a music critic for more than thirty years, working for NPR, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and other publications. In the decade she has worked with NPR, she has written extensively on music and culture and appeared regularly on the All Songs Considered podcast and on news shows including All Things Considered and Morning Edition. Her books include a memoir, Weird Like Us: My Bohemian America; Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music; and Piece by Piece with Tori Amos. Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell (2024) is her latest book. We feel lucky that Ann calls Nashville home.
We’re really looking forward to a fun conversation with Neko & Ann and hope you’ll be here for it. Preorder your copy of Neko’s recent memoir or one of her fantastic Anti- Records albums* in the record store or on our site here and score a wristband that secures your spot in the shop and in the signing line.
