Ann joins Neko to discuss her recent memoir The Harder I Fight The More I Love Youand her latest album, Neon Grey Midnight Green, amongst other things. Following their conversation both authors will be signing copies of their works for attendees. All who preorder Neko’s book or any of her Anti- Records albums in the shop or on our site here will receive a wristband for our event. Wristbands are required for those 13+ and also guarantee your entrance to the event. (Kids under 12 don’t require a wristband if attending with a wistband-holding adult.) Neko Case has long been revered as one of music’s most influential artists, whose authenticity, lyrical storytelling, and sly wit have endeared her to a legion of critics, musicians, and lifelong fans. In The Harder I Fight The More I Love You, Case brings her trademark candor and precision to a memoir that traces her evolution from an invisible girl “raised by two dogs and a space heater” in rural Washington state to her improbable emergence as an internationally-acclaimed talent. In luminous, sharp-edged prose, Case shows readers what it’s like to be left alone for hours and hours as a child, to take refuge in the woods around her home, and to channel the monotony and loneliness and joy that comes from music, camaraderie, and shared experience into art. The Harder I Fight The More I Love You is a rebellious meditation on identity and corruption, and a manifesto on how to make space for ourselves in this world, despite the obstacles we face.

Neon Grey Midnight Green is Case’s first new music this decade, following 2018’s Hell-On, an eclectic piece that The Guardian called “a pitch-perfect roar of female defiance.” Her latest is no less urgent but carries a deep blue streak of sentimentality in its incandescent blaze. More than any of her past albums, Neon Grey Midnight Green was laid down live with a full band – even breaths and shirt-sleeve rustlings were kept in the final mix as a reminder that “humans were here.” Recording primarily took place at Case’s own Vermont studio, Carnassial Sound, with additional sessions in Denver, Colorado with the PlainsSong Chamber Orchestra and in Portland, Oregon with Tucker Martine.

Preorders are limited to total of TOTAL TWO per customer / household. For each album preordered, you’ll receive a wristband such that two LPs preordered = two wristbands, one book preordered = one wristband, etc. All who place preorders in advance will receive an email with preorder pickup and event details on or by the day before our event.

After discussion portion of our event, Neko Case will sign books & albums for wristbanded attendees. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+ and guarantee entrance to our event. (Wristbands are not required for kids 12 & under attending with a wristband-holding adult.) Ann Powers will also be hanging out and signing books for attendees. Event preorders for store pickup will be held for three months after the event date. Please pick up your copies of The Harder I Fight The More I Love You‍ hardback book, ‍Neon Grey Midnight Green, and any other Neko Case albums preordered no later than June 18th.
