Stone Jack Jones has always been moving. After his family discouraged him from becoming a 5th generation coal miner in West Virginia - then getting out of the Vietnam War due to his epilepsy - Jones basically became a vagabond: A travelling musician with no particular place to go, Jones spent time in Ft. Worth, Baltimore, New York City, and Atlanta before settling in Nashville sometime in the early 90s to take a job with a railroad and raise a family. He kept making music, too, and formed a tight bond with a core group of fellow Music City outsiders, including Lambchop mastermind Kurt Wagner, singer-songwriter Patty Griffin, and, crucially, producer-engineer Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney, Bob Dylan). Now, at 70 years old, splitting his time between Paris and Nashville, Black Snake, Jones' fifth album, finds the musician still on the move. Recorded by Moutenot and featuring with a host of Jones' longtime collaborators - including Kyle Hamlett (lylas), Rodrigo Avendano (Coupler, Sun Seeker, Soccer Mommy), Luke Schneider (Margo Price, William Tyler), Lambchop drummer Scott Martin, and producer-musician-songwriter Patrick Damphier - these songs reflect on specific ailments of our times: police brutality, the immigrant crisis, and the general weariness of the human condition, among them. In total, there are three songs of death, two of madness, two of love, and a journey.
We're very pleased to welcome Stone Jack Jones back to Grimey's for a free, live performance in celebration of Black Snake on Wednesday, September 25th, at 6PM.
