Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Margo Price – Strays CD/LP (Loma Vista)

Extracting herself from expectations, musical genre and the material desires that drive the world, Strays finds Margo Price tackling demons of self-image, self-worth, and more that came in the wake of her recent decision to quit drinking. Instilled with a newfound confidence and comfortability to experiment and explore like never before, Margo Price and her longtime band of Pricetags channeled their telepathic abilities into songs that span rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelic country, rhythm & blues, and glistening, iridescent pop. [Two indie store exclusive editions are available: autographed CD and a limited purple w/ smoke color vinyl pressing.]

The Features - The Mahaffey Sessions 1999 LP (yk Records)

Previously only available as a CD-R passed around among fans of the band, The Mahaffey Sessions from 1999 chronicled the early evolution of one of the most popular bands in the middle Tennessee region. These songs were fan favorites at shows then and throughout The Features’ career, but the sessions, recorded in 1999 by Matt Mahaffey (sElf) in his home studio in Murfreesboro and mixed in L.A. in early 2000, were never officially released as the band’s label, Spongebath, dissolved around that time. This is basically the band’s debut full-length LP, unavailable officially until now, thanks to Michael Eades and his yk Records label. Join us for a listening party in the shop on Saturday, January 14th, at 5PM. We’ll spin the record and have free beer courtesy of Tennessee Brew Works. The LP is available for purchase now and at the party. Be there or be square!

Ahab – The Coral Tombs CD/LP (Napalm)

Following their much acclaimed, chart-impacting 2015 release, The Boats Of The Glenn Carrig, and their epic Live Prey release (2020), 2023 sees extreme doom metal masters Ahab celebrate their 19th band anniversary in glorious style. Inspired this time by Jules Verne's masterpiece 20000 Leagues Under The Sea, The Coral Tombs is the fifth album from the German four-piece and their first in eight years.

Gaye Su Akyol - Anadolu Ejderi LP (Glitterbeat)

Building upon her mélange of Turkish psychedelia, empowered commentary and retro-futurist sonics, the acclaimed Istanbul artist's vision is more personal and uncompromising on her fourth album than ever before. Lauded for her startling, innovative mix of Turkish psychedelia and folk song, surf music and ʼ90s Western rock, a global sweet spot where Anatolian music heroine Selda Bağcan rubbed shoulders with Kurt Cobain, Akyol was ready to expand her vision after a relentless period on the road. The instrumentation forges closer connections between Turkey's past and its present, as the rock guitar, bass and drum trio are now accompanied by traditional instruments such as violin, oud, electro baglama, cümbüş, sazbüş. With Anadolu Ejderi, Akyol says, "I'm telling stories for the future."

blackbear – in loving memory LP (Columbia)

Released last August on CD – now available on vinyl. in loving memory is the highly anticipated new album from multi-platinum selling singer, songwriter, and producer blackbear. This collection is blackbear’s sixth studio album and illustrates a return to his most authentic self and taking back control of his sound with his most reflective, nostalgic, and personal album to date. While recording a track called “the idea” in 2021 with Travis Barker, blackbear was inspired to create an entire album that gave him that same feeling of nostalgia of leaning into his pop-punk and emo beginnings.

Circa Waves – Never Going Under CD/LP (Lower Third)

Never Going Under is Circa Wave's highly anticipated fifth record, and the encapsulation of a continued upward trajectory for the band over the last decade. Becoming one of Britain's most influential and adored guitar bands, the four piece's dedication to constantly developing their sound has seen them secure increasingly high positions in the UK Album Charts, as well as amassing an army of dedicated fans. Written throughout the pandemic and produced by Kieran Shuddall himself, this record sees the band continue to push themselves into new territories and effortlessly cement their place in the scene. [Indie store exclusive color vinyl.]

Expert Timing – Stargazing LP (Run For Cover)

Expert Timing describe themselves as bubblegrunge power pop. Hailing from Orlando, Florida, the trio is comprised of husband/wife Jeff (vocalist/guitarist) and Katrina Snyder (vocalist/bassist), as well as drummer Gibran Colbert. Their brand of music is infectious and fun and feels like a summery day, even when heading into serious lyrical territory. But beware, it also packs a punch and absolutely refuses to leave your head. Mustard yellow vinyl pressing.

Goo Goo Dolls – Chaos In Bloom LP (WB)

Released last summer on CD – now available on vinyl. Marking the first album of their career to be produced by frontman John Rzeznik, Chaos In Bloom finds The Goo Goo Dolls at the top of their game and continuing to constantly evolve just as they have for nearly four decades together. Consisting of ten tracks, Chaos In Bloom is an album of biting sarcasm, stadium-ready choruses, and the type of spear-sharp songwriting that's led them to becoming one of the most influential alternative rock groups of all time. While Chaos In Bloom isn't necessarily an album borne out by the pandemic, many of the tracks reflect on all of the things in daily life that became amplified while everyone was isolated from one another and sequestered at home.

Goose – Undecided 12” (No Coincidence)

Black w/ white color vinyl pressing. Undecided, a four-song studio release from ascending rock quintet Goose, is the musical byproduct created from a fusion of long- time songwriting with fresh recording practices. The songs have been reimagined by the band in an organic and intuitive way; allowing their unique spirit to shine through. Produced by D. James Goodwin and captured during the recording sessions for Goose's critically acclaimed 2022 release Dripfield, the EP project is a testament to the band's versatility, with propulsive guitar riffs, infectious grooves, and emotive lyrics that seamlessly intertwine.

Joesef – Permanent Damage CD/LP (Bold Cut)

Glaswegian soul star Joesef releases his debut album Permanent Damage. Representing the multilayers of the Scottish singer's character and heart, over the past two years we have all witnessed an artist who has grown from bedroom pop to master and co-producer of new soul born from new heartbreak. The album includes the singles “It's Been A Little Heavy Lately” and “East End Coast”. [Indie store exclusive ‘eco mix’ vinyl.]

Obituary – Dying Of Everything CD/LP (Relapse)

New release from the death metal band. Dying Of Everything destroys in the time-honored tradition of early Obituary classics Slowly We Rot and Cause Of Death while maintaining the killer studio sound that the band has been perfecting in their own studio since 2007's monstrous Xecutioner's Return. Track after track, Obituary solidify their legacy as a death metal institution, churning out some of the heaviest riffs in their career. [Indie store exclusive halloween orange vinyl.]

Orthodox – Learning To Dissolve LP+CD (Century Media)

Limited-edition translucent orange color variant. 2022’s Learning To Dissolve is the punctuation on a journey that began with 2017's Sounds Of Loss. From the inception, Orthodox was nothing short of a standout, blending riffs that wouldn't be out of place on a Slipknot record coupled with Easterling's blunt, Jonathan Davis-esque howls. But, like their sonic brethren in Knocked Loose or Vein. FM, while the influence of the ‘90s/’00s is there, Orthodox doesn't merely pay homage to their influences, it exceeds them.

Iggy Pop – Every Loser CD/LP/Cassette (Atlantic)

As indicated by the pinned db meters of lead single "Frenzy", Every Loser harkens back to Iggy Pop's primordial roots while maintaining an undeniably modern lyrical point viewpoint and sonic palette. Every Loser is an exemplary album of primal rock 'n' roll – a master class in the art of lashing out with unequalled intensity and unflappable wit. The result is 11 songs by the man who refused to go gently into that good night on his previous album, 2019's somber and contemplative Free, and is once again charging fearlessly at life itself on Every Loser. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

Rachel & Vilray – I Love A Love Song! CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Rachael Price and Vilray began performing together in 2015, although they first met in 2003 as students at the New England Conservatory of Music. Vilray formed a couple of bands with Price’s soon-to-be bandmates in Lake Street Dive—Price recalls he had a nimble mind and quick wit when it came to lyrics. It was more than a decade later that Price and Vilray began to collaborate. She had been on the road much of each year with Lake Street Dive and he had been developing his own solo act, just voice and guitar. In 2019, Rachael & Vilray released their self-titled debut album via Nonesuch Records to critical praise; NPR said, “She can sing anything; he can play anything…Tin Pan Alley meets the Lower East Side in a smoky bar, in songs with a twist of humor.”

Nathan Salsburg – Landwerk No. 3 2xLP (No Quarter)

The third volume of the Landwerk series by guitarist, archivist and 78 collector Nathan Salsburg. After releasing three acclaimed acoustic guitar records from 2011-2018, Salsburg pivoted with the first volume of Landwerk in 2020. Alone on a tree farm in rural Kentucky, he put on an old 78 by the Jewish cantor Yossele Rosenblatt one winter night and was struck by an organ chord. He sampled it, looped it, and began playing guitar alongside it. It was like "conversing with a ghost" he told Uncut Magazine in 2021. Landwerk No. 3 contains six new compositions across two LPs.

JD Simo – Songs From The House OF Grease CD (Crows Feet)

This album was cut live in the House Of Grease in June of 2022 between tours. It features the most inspiring performances to date from JD and company, inclusing some new tunes and takes on John Coltrane, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Blind Alfred Reed. Step into the funky basement and enjoy some inspired renderings from deep in the House Of Grease.

Velvet Negroni – Bulli CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)

Bulli is a record that trembles with a slick and polished new intensity following a relatively tumultuous life period. It glimmers with an almost-uncomfortable pop sheen, with the lead single "Sinker" whirring with a strutting positivity and rich instrumentation that is at stark odds with the lyrics ("Wake up and do pills like I'm dying of cancer"). Touchstones of leftfield electronic sounds meld with nods to alternative rock, power pop, even tender R&B and deft hip-hop. It's a record that holds something anticipatory, at times almost frantic and manic, occasionally even sexy, and breathy (as on the lithe bass of "Shiny"). Bulli is a deeply accomplished album which swirls with fragmentary soundscapes pushing ever forward into somewhere that feels new and vital.

Ernie Vincent – Original Dap King LP (Cornelius Chapel)

Tracked at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley, Mississippi with Bronson Tew and Matt Patton at the helm, and drums and bass, respectively. Featuring Jimbo Mathus on keys and leading the band along with his Squirrel Nut Zippers' horns and strings. What's left is a fiery offering of funky blues with equal measures of soul and rock 'n' roll interspersed for a delectable bayou audible feast. Funkier than last week's gumbo with a psych blues side order.

Whitehorse – I’m Not Crying, You’re Crying CD/LP (Six Shooter)

On I'm Not Crying, You're Crying, Whitehorse venture deeper into classic country music touchstones than ever before, a move that is both a homecoming and an evolution of their sound. I'm Not Crying, You're Crying is an immaculate collection of ‘70s country-inspired songs that showcase Whitehorse at their absolute best.

James Brown – Soul On Top [Reissue/1969] LP (Verve)

Mel Brown – Chicken Fat [Reissue/1967] LP (Impulse!)

Guitarist Mel Brown's 1967 Impulse! debut is possibly the funkiest and most unique album ever released on the label. His clean blues picking style - honed while playing in John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands - marinates funkily with the swinging soul-jazz organ of Gerald Wiggins.

Coil – Queens Of The Circulating Library [Reissue/2000] CD/LP (Dais)

Queens Of The Circulating Library stands alongside Time Machines and Nurse With Wound's Soliloquy For Lilith as a post-industrial pinnacle of sensory-warping long-form drone. Crafted by the distilled duo of Thighpaulsandra and John Balance, the 49-minute piece unfurls in swirling, cyclical waves, tidal as much as textural, channeling the spirit of levitational minimalism pioneered by La Monte Young. Touted as the first part in "a continually mutating series of circulating musickal compositions" upon its initial release in 2000, the album remains a compelling case study in Coil's exceptional capacity for mutation and extremes. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]

Dave Davies – Living On A Thin Line 2xLP (Red River Entertainment)

Charlie Megira – The Abtomatic Miesterzinger Mambo Chic [Reissue/2000] LP (Numero)
Charlie Megira – Yesterday, Today, & Tomorrow b/w Tomorrow’s Gone 7” (Numero)

On his 2000 debut, Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic, Megira channels the optimism of post-war America, narcoleptic surf, and the Twin Peaks soundtrack into a lo-fi lo-rider masterpiece all his own. Sung in both Hebrew and English, Mambo Chic moves at a deliberate pace, unconcerned by the traffic of the modern world and wrapped in a blanket of Tascam 4-track hiss. On "Tomorrow's Gone" Megira achieves the feat of being so far back in time that he's somehow living in the future and waiting for the rest of us to arrive. Hear two favorite cuts in back-saving, crate-flavoring 7" format ripe and ready the dive bar sound system hosting your favorite BYOV night. [Limited-edition colorways are available.]

Ritual Howls – Ritual Howls [Reissue/2012] CD/LP (Felte)

10-year anniversary expanded deluxe edition. The story of Ritual Howls begins in a southwest Detroit basement in the early winter of 2012. Singer/guitarist Paul Bancell had been writing and performing solo as well as in several bands and was looking for collaborators for a new project. Ben Saginaw (bass) and Chris Samuels (synths, drums, drum machines) were acquittances that became natural fits. With the help of a friend (Jeff Navarre), they recorded their first full-length in Ben's art studio using a laptop. Paul tracked vocals at home in his bedroom and, not wanting to relinquish control, mixed and mastered the album himself. A formidable introduction to the band's haunting, cinematic blend of twangy industrial rock, their self-titled album established the band as a unique force in the landscape of dark music, both past and present. Separated by a decade, four LPs, two EPs later, Ritual Howls is an impressively cohesive first effort and testament to the band's vision that, even in its infancy, forged a distinct sound that has only matured with perfection over time. [Limited-edition ‘cemetery green’ vinyl.]

Boz Scaggs – Boz Scaggs [Reissue/1969] LP (Friday Music)

Ace features all the Grateful Dead members at the time except for Ron "Pigpen" McKernan including Jerry Garcia, Keith Godchaux, Bill Kreutzmann, and Phil Lesh. The album includes studio versions of "Playing In The Band" and "One More Saturday Night" which became concert staples for the Dead. [Indie store exclusive translucent red vinyl.]

Various Artists - Soviet Disco: Disco, Electro, Funk from Behind the Iron Curtain 1979-1990 LP (Aberrant Records)

An amazing showcase of disco, electro, funk, and more from the USSR 1979-1990. A mind-blowing introduction to the obscure world of soviet dance music. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready for a weird trip to the dancefloor, to a time when the Soviet Union -- still alive and under the flag of the hammer and sickle -- managed to produce some wonderfully odd and hypnotic disco hits, mutant funk smashers and electro hip breakers.
