Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Beach Fossils - The Other Side of Life: Piano Ballads LP (Bayonet)

Inspired by a love of artists such as Bill Evans, Lester Young, Chet Baker and Vince Guaraldi, Dustin Payseur reimagines some of his greatest hits from the Beach Fossils catalog alongside a group of formally trained jazz musicians. A rich and mellow mix of piano, saxophone, upright bass and brushed drums explore the contours of familiar songs, soaring Payseur's melancholic harmonies to new heights. [Deep sea color vinyl.]

Bonobo - Fragments 2xLP/CD (Ninja Tune)

Fragments is the most emotionally intense record that Simon Green has ever had to make. It's no surprise that it's also his masterpiece. The album features Jamila Woods, Joji, Kadhja Bonet, Jordan Rakei, O'Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. Born first out of fragments of ideas and experimentation, the album ultimately was fused together in a burst of creativity fueled by both collaboration and Green's escape into the wild. The artwork for Fragments is by Neil Krug who returns after creating the art for 2017's Migration. Fragments is a series of 12 sonic affirmations, featuring some of the hardest and most hip-shaking grooves that Green has ever created. [Indie exclusive red marble vinyl.]

The Bros. Landreth - ’87 LP (Birthday Cake Media)

The Bros. Landreth is the sound of two brothers making honest music and playing it from the heart. Raised to the sound of their parent’s eclectic record collection, Joey and Dave Landreth are celebrated for their Americana-inspired blend of sincere song writing, slide guitar, blood harmonies, and pure musicianship.

Jacob Bryant - Bar Stool Preacher LP/CD (American Roots)

With powerhouse vocals, bold songwriting talent and a dynamic live show, Outlaw country rocker Jacob Bryant continues breaking the mold as a new artist. The singer-songwriter is a true road warrior and spent hundreds of thousands of miles on the road playing in honky tonks, fairs and even the Mother Church of Country Music, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Bryant has built an eager fan base while developing his trademark, deeply personal songs. Produced by Bryant, Jesse Triplette (guitarist from Collective Soul), Brandon Metcalf (Kacey Musgraves, Brantley Gilbert, Blues Traveler), Noah Gordon and Jeff Catton, Bar Stool Preacher was recorded at South X Sea Studios in Nashville.

Richard Carpenter - Richard Carpenter’s Piano Songbook CD (Decca)

Richard Carpenter is the icon, musician, record producer, songwriter, & music arranger from the astronomically successful The Carpenters, a group who have sold more than 90M albums worldwide. On Richard Carpenter's Piano Songbook, Richard reimagines The Carpenters' biggest hits - & some choice favorites that inspired them - on solo piano. The album includes some of the most beloved melodies of all time - 'Top of the World' & 'We've Only Just Begun' - presented in a gloriously relaxing new way. [Vinyl due Feb. 18]

Cat Power - Covers CD (Domnio)

Cover songs have always occupied a crucial place in the Marshall canon, and Covers completes a trilogy of sorts, following beloved past Cat Power collections Jukebox (2008) and The Covers Record (2000). While she frequently delights and surprises with the songs she chooses to cover, it’s Marshall’s total commitment to the performance - imbuing the songs with a creative singularity that rivals her original work - that make Cat Power covers so special. Says Pitchfork, Marshall can “rearrange a song simply by squinting at it.” Covers include songs originally performed by Billie Holiday, Kitty Wells, Iggy Pop, The Replacements, The Pogues, Nick Cave, Nico, Lana Del Rey and more. [Indie exclusive gold vinyl shipped late and will arrive early next week.]

Elvis Costello & The Imposters - The Boy Named If 2xLP/CD (Capitol)

Elvis Costello & The Imposters release The Boy Named If, an album of urgent, immediate songs with bright melodies, stinging guitar solos, and a quick step to the rhythm. Costello says, "The full title of this record is 'The Boy Named If (And Other Children's Stories).' 'IF' is a nickname for your imaginary friend; your secret self, the one who knows everything you deny, the one you blame for the shattered crockery and the hearts you break, even your own." Produced by Costello and Sebatian Krys. [Indie exclusive color vinyl is delayed. We have some black vinyl in the meantime…]

Grace Cummings - Storm Queen LP/CD (ATO)

Melbourne indie-folk artist Grace Cummings' sophomore album is a body of work with its own unruly climate, governed only by the singular force of her devastating vocals. Over the course of 11 feverishly composed folk songs, Cummings explores a vast and volatile emotional landscape, approaching each track with both exquisite control and unfettered abandon. [Limited edition red vinyl.]

Alan Fitzpatrick - Machine Therapy 2xLP (Anjunadeep)

Machine Therapy marks the first album from Alan Fitzpatrick in a decade, with standout debut collaborations including High Contrast and UK vocalist Kele. The name derives from the time Alan has spent in his home studio, with the hardware he has collected over the years, the machines offering a sort of therapy during the pandemic. The album sees Alan pull his wide-ranging sounds together into one, coherent project, combining techno, house, breaks and ambient. Drawing on the early days of rave for inspiration, along with the machinery, Alan has fused sci-fi sonics with emotional songs and dystopian samples, which alongside the artwork, transport the listener to his cinematic musical world.

Garcia Peoples - Dodging Dues LP (No Quarter)

Dodging Dues is a startlingly expansive record - "startling" in part because it's relatively short (seven songs, all but one hovering around the four minute mark), but also because it traverses so many moods and styles: languid and dreamy one moment, surging and intense the next. Garcia Peoples (these days a six-person band) "hit their stride" a long time ago, but here they seem to be hitting a different one, working themselves loose of influences (though this tree has roots: traces of Thin Lizzy, of more arcane bits of U.K. folk-prog, of vintage Meat Puppets in some of the softer passages) while at the same time opening themselves up to their own individual strangeness, becoming ever more singular and ever more free.

The Kernal - Listen To The Blood LP/CD (Single Lock)

With a storyteller's eye and sly sense of humor that echoes not only his "honorary uncle" Del Reeves, but Tom T. Hall and Roger Miller, The Kernal delves deep into everything from family dysfunction to road trips to matters of the heart. The music, which he describes with a laugh as "diet country," embodies the spirit of that genre without any of the slavishness or self-seriousness of much modern Americana. Rolling Stone has called his style "sweetly subversive, intellectual and addictive," while Lo-Down said "the songs have an air of nostalgia but they sound far from old - modern, yet timeless. "

John Carroll Kirby - Cryptozoo OST LP (Stones Throw)

Cryptozoo is an animated feature-film drama, written and directed by Dash Shaw, featuring the voices of Lake Bell, Zoe Kazan, Michael Cera and Louisa Krause. The film won the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance, and premiered internationally at the 2021 Berlinale. This is John Carroll Kirby's first time bringing his talents as a composer and producer to film scoring. His score resists easy genre classification, melding together sounds from New Age, exotica, library music, and the sweeter side of electronic music, and makes for a perfect match with artist and filmmaker Dash Shaw's vibrant animated feature.

The Lumineers - Brightside CD (Dualtone)

Coming off the success of their darkly cinematic third record III , Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites' latest work is their most spontaneous and joyous yet, featuring their ever-more-sophisticated songwriting and arranging and production from longtime producer and friend Simone Felice. [Our indie exclusive color vinyl LPs shipped late, but we’ll have this title on black vinyl early next week.]

Portrayal of Guilt - Christf***er LP/CD (Run For Cover)

We each have our own idea of what it means to live through a period filled with perpetual dread, a slowly burning world, and overwhelming darkness. In the case of Portrayal of Guilt, their tortuous afterlife comes with grief, loss, masochism, suffering, and pain. On Christf***er, their second full-length of 2021, Portrayal of Guilt plunges headfirst into unfathomable depths, creating a work of art that's powerfully unsettling. [Limited edition oxblood color vinyl.]

The Punch Brothers - Hell On Church LP/CD (Nonesuch)

Hell on Church Street, Punch Brothers’ newest album, is the band’s reimagining of, and homage to, the late bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album Church Street Blues. The record features a collection of songs by Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe, and others. Recorded at Nashville’s Blackbird Studio in November 2020, during a time of great uncertainty, Hell on Church Street was intended as both its own work of art and a gift to Rice, who died that Christmas. Punch Brothers said of Tony Rice and Church Street Blues: “No record (or musician) has had a greater impact on us, and we felt compelled to cover it in its entirety, with the objective of interacting with it in the same spirit of respect-fueled adventure that Tony brought to each of its pre-existing songs.”

Relaxer - Concealer 2xLP (Planet Mu)

Daniel Martin-McCormick, formerly Ital, now Relaxer, returns to Planet Mu with his new album ’Concealer'. The album drifts towards hyper digital sounds and marks Daniel’s return to using a computer with hardware. Combining the ultra-artifice of the digital and its glossy, pure surface qualities, Daniel comments that it “gives the sounds this sickly, shiny dimensionality which is un-human. This decoupling from the human-ness of sound means the sounds can speak in their own special way. Of course, all sounds can speak in their way, but a vivid, digital, melty synth speaks in a way that feels more autonomous, or less tied to historical/encultured musical gestures. It hovers in the air and melts and glides. It's a little gross.”

U-Roy - Solid Gold LP (BMG)

U-Roy's final full-length, Solid Gold. The album was originally set to come out in 2020 with plans for a worldwide tour in support, but unfortunately, the pandemic delayed the release. Now, with the heartbreaking loss of U-Roy on February 17, 2021 the album has become a celebration of one of the most profoundly influential reggae stars of his generation. An originator of the chatty rhythmic vocal style known as toasting - a key foundational element in the development of rap in it's early stages in the 1970s - U-Roy left behind an unmatched legacy which is clearly on display on Solid Gold, with it's guest appearances including Ziggy Marley, Shaggy, Mick Jones of The Clash, Santigold, Sly & Robbie, David Hinds of Steel Pulse, Big Youth, Tarrus Riley, Rygin King, Jesse Royal, Richie Spice, and Scientist.

Underoath - Voyeurist LP/CD (Fearless)

Underoath return to their unique chaotic core with their ninth studio album, Voyeurist. An unguarded keyhole invites the viewer to peer into the process and draw their own conclusion on who the band is, and what that perception reveals about the viewer themselves. Amidst the colliding perspectives, it's clear that identities have been lost, and you are no longer you. [Indie exclusive gold vinyl.]

Kenneth Whalum - Broken Land 2 LP (Secretly Canadian)

Singer, songwriter, and saxophonist Kenneth Whalum was reared as much by his parents as he was by the melodies that narrated his earliest dreams. Born and raised in Memphis, TN, his family immersed him in both liturgical and secular music. Kenneth's journey to date has been as much the product of destiny's script as it is the result of his conscious dedication to his art. With a captivating intensity, his work pushes the conventional boundaries of contemporary emerging artists. He fuses together soul, alternative, hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and blues.

The Wild Feathers - Alvarado LP/CD (New West)

In December of 2020, The Wild Feathers hauled off to a pre-civil war built cabin in VanLeer, TN where the ideas and songs from Alvarado met for the very first time. In the past, the band typically liked to collect all the tunes they've written over the past year, brainstorm, conceptualize, and rehearse isolated in a cabin before heading into the studio. This time for their 4th studio album, they decided to bring the studio to the cabin. The guys spent a week jamming and creating while having the ability to capture the performances while they were fresh. Produced by the band, Alvarado is the truest representation of The Wild Feathers to date. No outside musicians, no outside opinions, just us playing our new songs in a room with the best mics they could find. [Indie exclusive orange & black blob vinyl.]

Reissues, Compilations, Live Recordings & Vault Excavations...

[Also released today - a picture disc pressing of Hunky Dory.]

Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams - Motor City Scene LP (BMG)

Motor City Scene, also released as Stardust, is an album by American saxophonist Pepper Adams and trumpeter Donald Byrd, recorded in 1960 and released on the Bethlehem label featuring Byrd and Adams with Kenny Burrell, Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes.

Johnny Cash - Bear’s Sonic Journals: At the Carousel Ballroom April 24, 1968 2xLP (BMG)

Limited edition deluxe box set edition on yellow vinyl. After a tumultuous 1967 for JOHNNY CASH, the year 1968 was bookended by what would become his two iconic, highest-grossing albums, At Folsom Prison and At San Quentin. But now, fifty-three years later, a lost chapter has emerged to enrich and complement the story of that very good year. JOHNNY CASH AT THE CAROUSEL BALLROOM, recorded on April 24, 1968, captures the man in black at the height of his charismatic powers. Confidently departing from the more formalized setlist he'd been doing, we hear him in playful and powerful dialogue with his new bride June Carter and his longtime musicians-guitarist Luther Perkins, bassist Marshall Grant and drummer W.S. Holland-connecting with an audience more accustomed to the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. What makes the performance even more significant is that it was recorded by the innovative sound wizard Owsley "Bear" Stanley in a verité style that startles with a clarity and dimension missing from the two more well-known releases. [Deluxe box includes: a vintage Johnny Cash comic book, yellow vinyl, facsimile of original concert poster and extensive liner notes with musings on Johnny Cash from contributors John Carter Cash, Bob Weir, and Dave Schools.

Miles Davis & Michel Legrand - Dingo: Selections from the Motion Picture LP (Rhino)

In 1990 Miles Davis starred in a movie about a veteran trumpeter (talk about typecasting) and had a rare opportunity to play part of the time in a straightahead setting. Music composed by Miles and Michel LeGrand. Reissued on red vinyl for Rhino’s Start Your Ear Off Right campaign.

Dirty Three - Horse Stories 2xLP (Touch & Go)

Limited edition 25th anniversary reissue on bright yellow vinyl. Originally released in September of 1996, Horse Stories is a collection of songs about traveling, gambling, winning, losing, pain, drugs, hope and love. It reads like a diary you wished you could write. Ladies and Gentleman, sit back, get yourself a drink, recall the phantom images of friends and lovers long gone and lose yourself in the pellucid depths. This is the soundtrack to the movie that is life.

Bill Fay - Still Some Light Part 1 2xLP (Dead Oceans)

Bill Fay has always sung about attempting to understand the most universal questions: those of nature, spirituality, humanity. His songs are "calming hymns for another chaotic time", he says. His influence can be traced through many artist's work, and so it only seemed right to celebrate this with a collection of newer voices interpreting his timeless tracks. Originally released in 2010 by David Tibet (Current 93), Still Some Light was released as a double CD, made up of 70's album demos (Disc One) and 2009 home recordings (Disc Two).

Steve Gunn / Bill Fay - Dust Filled Room 7” (Dead Oceans)
Kevin Morby / Bill Fay - I Hear You Calling 7” (Dead Oceans)

Aretha Franklin - Sparkle (Music from the Motion Picture) LP (Rhino)

Start Your Ear Off Right crystal clear vinyl pressing of this Aretha classic, produced by Curtis Mayfield.

The Front Bottoms - The Front Bottoms LP (Bar/None)

It's the 10 Year Anniversary of The Front Bottoms' self-titled debut, a beautiful alchemy of anthemic hooks and quotable confessions achievable only by the closest of friends, Brian Sella and Mat Uychich. Their songs are immediately recognizable, lyrics and riffs cleverly and effortlessly spun together into songs surprisingly real. Lyrically Brian Sella fires off scattershot images that the listener can gather up and make sense of like working puzzle pieces on the floor. Romance, freedom, paranoia, partying and somehow getting clean all tumble together from song to song. [10th anniversary red vinyl & picture disc are available.]

Tony Gallardo - Tony Gallardo: Selected Works LP (Hajuna Kalula)

Enigmatic pop outsider Tony Gallardo makes music that's perpetually perched on the outskirts of Mexico's fertile electronic underground. Since 2008, he has been releasing music that inhabits it's own artistic universe, a cross between Frank Zappa, Daniel Johnston, The Knife, OutKast and Rosa Pistola. He co-founded the Cocobass label, pioneered the fusion of L.A. noise and cumbia known as ruidos6n and has released music under a plethora of monikers: dark techno as Boi Patrol, ram- shackle electronic pop as Maria y Jose, experimental surf rock as El Capricho and experimental dembow as La Fiebre X. "Selected Works" assembles some of Gallardo's most crucial material from a run of EPs released between 2008 and 2013. These tracks show the breadth of his output, running through sleazy, neon electro ('Bruja', 'Mi Presa'), neck-snapping tropical dance music ('Kibose', 'La Conquista'), and eerie Mexican trap ('Plata 0 Plomo', 'Ultra'). It's introspective, haunted music from one of Mexico's most original and most under-appreci-ated artists that paints a picture of a psychedelic musical landscape that's hard to resist.

Steve Gunn / Kurt Vile - Gunn Vile LP (Three Lobed Records)

Kurt Vile and Steve Gunn collaborated on record in 2015 for their contributions to Three Lobed Recording's Parallelogram series. The two artists, originally connected by mutual friends and geographic proximity, have long pushed the other's continued artistic development. Released alongside the cinema debut of the feature length documentary film of the event, Oasis Knebworth 1996 is the definitive live recording featuring a setlist packed with stone cold classics taken from across both nights of the concert, from the opening salvoes of "Columbia" and "Acquiesce, " to "Champagne Supernova, " "Don't Look Back In Anger, " "Live Forever, " an orchestra backed "I Am The Walrus, " and of course the universally loved anthem "Wonderwall."
