Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Amanda Shires - For Christmas LP (Silver Knife Records)
On her first-ever holiday album For Christmas, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Amanda Shires invites the world into a fantastically warped wonderland of her own making. Though there’s flying reindeer and fallen tinsel and angels serenely plucking harps, Shires’s finespun storytelling sheds light on the kind of holiday experiences and emotions that often go ignored in Christmas songs: the family drama and forced cheer, burnt-out frustration and elaborate fantasies of escaping off to some far-away tropical island. Mostly made up of original material from the Texas-bred musician, the album unfolds in a selection of piano songs touched with the timeless charm of Brill Building pop—a lovely setting for the luminous vocal presence she’s brought to a series of acclaimed solo albums and to her role as a member of The Highwomen. Revealing an entirely new side of Shires’s idiosyncratic mind, the result belongs to that rare breed of holiday music that feels undeniably resonant at any season of the year. [Limited edition clear & gold vinyl. All copies at Grimey’s are signed by Amanda! Available in the shop and in the Grimey's webstore.]
Joe Bonamassa - Time Clocks 2xLP (J&R Adventures)

Bonamassa introduces elements of prog and hard rock to intensify his signature blues-rock style. Joe's co-writers on this record include Charlie Starr (Blackberry Smoke), Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake), James House and Tom Hambridge who help elevate the storytelling to a whole new level. [Transparent Yellow/Black Swirl 2LP with 20-page art booklet.]
Bo Burnham - Inside (The Songs) 2xLP (Imperial Distribution)
Critically acclaimed soundtrack to Bo Burnham's Netflix musical comedy special Inside. Includes "All Eyes On Me", "Welcome To The Internet" and "Bezos I". Shot and performed by Bo Burnham, alone, over the course of a very unusual year. Nominated for six Emmys including best variety series, writing, directing, song, musical direction, and editing.
Tré Burt - You Yeah You LP (Oh Boy)
Tré Burt is no stranger to coincidence. Much of his music career has been marked by chance encounters and happy accidents, the kind of stuff you see in movies but rarely experience in real life. It'd be easy to chalk such happenstance up to luck, then, but for Burt, being in the right place at the right time is a phenomenon born from his lifelong passion for music and his unwavering adherence to living authentically as an artist. You, Yeah, You is Tré's second full length album release through Nashville based Oh Boy Records and is the follow up to his debut, Caught It From The Rye. This new collection of original songs was recorded with the help of producer Brad Cook and finds Burt backed by a talented cast of guest musicians including Phil Cook, Matt McCaughan, Alex Farrar, Amelia Meath and Kelsey Waldon. You, Yeah, You is a narrated collection of songs featuring a cast of invented characters; heroes, villains, those destitute of salvation, and those seeking it. The album represents a summoning of the will to fight the unknown rather than surrender to fear and fatigue. Like his late songwriting hero John Prine, Burt showcases his poet's eye for detail, surgeon's sense of narrative precision, and his songwriters' ability to transpose observation into affecting verse.
Bill Charlap - Street of Dreams LP (Blue Note)
Grammy-winning pianist Bill Charlap returns to Blue Note with a sublime new album featuring his sterling trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington. This stunning new set presents the Great American Songbook alongside songs by great jazz composers including Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, and Kenny Burrell. Cirith Ungol - Frost & Fire 2xLP (Metal Blade)
Frost and Fire is the debut album by the American heavy metal band Cirith Ungol. [Leaf green marbled vinyl limited to 500, with book and poster.]
Elbow - Flying Dream 1 LP (Virgin Records)
The band wrote their 9th record remotely in their home studios before coming together at the empty Brighton Theatre Royal to perfect, perform, and record the songs. Features Craig Potter on production, Alex Reeves on drums, Sarah Fields on clarinet/saxophone, and London Contemporary Voices' Wilson Atie, Adeleye Omotayo and Marit Røkeberg as backing vocalists, and long-time collaborator Jesca Hoop. [Indie Exclusive Green LP, gatefold jacket.]
Nils Frahm - Old Friends, New Friends 2xLP (BMG)
Nils Frahm releases a new double album, Old Friends New Friends, released by Leiter, the label he set up with his manager, Felix Grimm. The collection gathers together 23 solo piano tracks recorded between 2009 and 2021, almost all hitherto unreleased but, for one reason or another, omitted from previous albums and projects. Neither quite a new LP nor exactly a compilation, it offers "an anatomy of all my ways of thinking musically and playing," Frahm says, adding with a smile, "Maybe I could say it's an album I worked on for twelve years, and finally I have enough material?"
Irreversible Entanglements - Open The Gates 2xLP (International Anthem)

Save Face - Another Kill For The Highlight Reel LP (Epitaph)
Another Kill For The Highlight Reel, which features indelibly human performances, including a guest appearance from Thursday's Geoff Rickly on "A.M. Gothic". "There's something about the New Jersey kinship [between Geoff and I] that really resonates with me," Tyler Povanda explains. "New Jersey's music scene is really something special." Musically, the album-which was produced by the Movielife's Brett Romnes-sees Povanda taking influence from his Jersey brethren like Thursday but adds a theatrical twist. "'GLITTER' was the first song I wrote that ended up being on this album and it bridges the gap between Merci and Another Kill For The Highlight Reel," Povanda says. "I think that song serves as a cool sonic metaphor for the transformation of the band. I would say this album isn't narrative in the same way as the last one, but it does feel much more immersive." [Indie exclusive red vinyl.]
Teeth - Finite LP (Translation Lost)
Los Angeles, California's Teeth return on Translation Lost with a blistering five song offering entitled Finite. [Limited edition cloudy green vinyl.]
W.H. Lung - Vanities LP (Melodic UK)
"We were raring to go," says W. H. Lung's Tom Sharkett of the band's desire to keep the momentum going after the huge success of their debut album. 2019's Incidental Music - a vivacious concoction of krautrock, synth pop and infectious grooves - topped end of year lists, with the likes of Piccadilly Records and Resident both naming it album of the year. Vanities is a very rare beast of a record: a lockdown album that feels bursting with vitality and the love, promise and transcendence of shared dance floor experiences. Just in time for when we crave those the most.
Brian Wilson – At My Piano LP (Decca)
Released last week on CD - now available on vinyl. Genius, icon, trailblazer - he revolutionized music as head of the Beach Boys. Featuring “God Only Knows”, “Wouldn't It Be Nice”, “California Girls”, “Good Vibrations” and many more on solo piano.
The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - Illusory Walls LP (Epitaph)
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the band-completed by Steven K. Buttery (drums and percussion), Joshua Cyr (bass/vocals) and Katie Dvorak (vocals/synth)-had nothing but time to realize the full extent of their musical and thematic aspirations. And so, four years on from lauded third album Always Foreign, they were able to make what is undoubtedly the band's most ambitious and epic record to date. Written and recorded remotely-a first for the band-Illusory Walls takes on the weight of human existence while it's buckling under the pressure of today's near-dystopian society. Personal anxieties and political struggles collide with a series of portentous, apocalyptic and dramatic tunes, resulting in some of the darkest music the band has made since forming in 2009. [Indie exclusive clear vinyl.]
X Ambassadors - The Beautiful Liar LP (Interscope)
On their 3rd full-length album, The Beautiful Liar, the multi-platinum-selling alt-rock band X Ambassadors pay homage to beloved fictions of their childhood, sharing songs that tell the tale of a blind teenage girl discovering her long-dormant superpowers. It's the latest and most ambitious outcome of the band's hyper-creative tendencies. They have augmented the album's storytelling component by weaving in a series of interludes between songs that propel it's wildly original plot forward. [Limited edition marigold color vinyl.]
Reissues, Compilations, Live Recordings & Vault Excavations...

Federal Duck - Federal Duck LP (Munster)
Federal Duck's self-titled album, originally released in 1968. It would be difficult to overlook the eye-catching colorful cover, designed by Abe Gurvin, who was also responsible for the very appealing artwork on Tito Rodriguez and Gene Pitney's releases on the New York-based Musicor label. However, this self-titled LP was soon forgotten after not having any singles released as promotional support to the album and also, maybe, due to the complete absence of covers in the track list. Federal Duck was one of many college bands to pop up during the psychedelic years. It consisted of Tony Shaftel (vocals, bass), Jack Bowers (guitar), George Stavis (guitar, vocals, and songwriting), Huck White (guitar, French horn), Ken Stover (keyboards, tuba), Bob Stern (bass, vocals), and Timmy Ackerman (drums, percussion). Mixing elements of jazz, country, and soft-psychedelia, “Tomorrow Waits For Today" stands out as a wonderful piece of jazzy pop-psych that easily rivals the best recordings of the genre.

Material Issue - International Pop Overthrow LP (BackGroove)
Chicago power pop trio Material Issue married the tight and melodic commercial appeal of acts like Cheap Trick and the Knack with the jangly guitars and cockiness of early-'90s Britpop. Formed in the late '80s as a songwriting vehicle for guitarist/lead singer Jim Ellison, the band included bassist Ted Ansani and drummer Mike Zelenko. In 1987, after doing time in and around the Windy City club scene, the group released an eponymous EP that resulted in a contract with Mercury Records. Their major-label debut, the rock-solid International Pop Overthrow, found itself a place on modern rock radio with the raucous single "Valerie Loves Me", and thrust the group to the front of the burgeoning alternative rock movement. Produced by ex-Shoes member Jeff Murphy.
Midnight - Sweet Death And Ecstasy LP (Metal Blade)
With their 2017 third album, Sweet Death and Ecstasy, Athenar and Co. Returned with their darkest and most daring effort yet. Granted, upon the first detonating chords of opener "Crushed by Demons," it would be fair to assume that Sweet Death and Ecstasy is simply classic Midnight... until the track time nearly doubles what a characteristic track of theirs would be. This is no mere bloat, though: bookended by two of the band's longest songs to date, Sweet Death and Ecstasy lays bare a more anguished 'n' aggravated Midnight, forever in thrall to the usual subjects (lust, filth, sleaze) but speaking a slightly different, altogether-more-poisonous tongue. It both charges harder than ever and also puts on the brakes to bang 'n' clang in a manner most foul. Indeed, Midnight truly deliver Sweet Death and Ecstasy in a swift 32 minutes, and it's absolutely addicting. [Limited edition hot pink with double mint vinyl.]

Sly & The Family Stone - There’s A Riot Goin’ On LP (Legacy)
There's A Riot Goin' On, Sly And The Family Stone's influential masterpiece of darkly psychedelic funk turns 50 in 2021. The album marked a shift in the band's tone, striking a more political and militant vibe while showing Sly Stone's disillusionment with the promise of the '60s. At the same time, it was also a big commercial success, hitting #1 on the album charts while the single "Family Affair" topped the singles charts. It's influence rang throughout the '70s as all of the funk innovators took their cues from this seminal album, and it's songs became a favorite for hip hop artist mining sampling gold decades later. It came in at #81 on Rolling Stone's Greatest Albums Of All Time and besides "Family Affair," the album features the tracks "Just Like A Baby" and "Africa Talks To You ("Asphalt Jungle")." [50th anniversary red vinyl edition.]

Characterized by a more tranquil and evolved sound, The Sea can be seen as a landmark in the Somali Yacht Club discography.
Sun Ra - Omniverse LP/CD (Modern Harmonic)
Omniverse, recorded in New York in 1979 and released that year on Sun Ra's Saturn label, has been gathering dust for too long. It's a fine, overlooked item in the vast Ra catalog. The tracks aren't so much compositions as they are excursions, with only a few memorable themes or recurring motifs.
Swirlies - They Spent Their Wild Youthful Days In The Glittering World Of The Salons LP (Taang!)
The Boston shoegaze / indie rock band’s second full length album, released in 1996 after a lineup change in the band, and pressed on vinyl as a stand-alone album for the first time. Limited edition pressing, available exclusively at independent records (bumped from RSD Black Friday, 11/26/21.)
Tedeschi Trucks Band feat. Trey Anastasio - Layla Revisited (Live at LOCKN’) 3xLP (Fantasy)

Recorded August 24, 2019, the performance of the legendary album in it's entirety was kept secret until the moment the band took stage. One listen and it's clear that their surprise performance that night - which included close TTB collaborator Doyle Bramhall II on guitar - meant something special to the astonished fans who were lucky to experience. [Limited edition cobalt blue vinyl with etching. Strictly limited to one per customer, in-store purchase only.]
Various Artists - Cuba: Music & Revolution Vol. 2 3xLP (Soul Jazz Records)

Various Artists - Kill Rock Stars LP (Kill Rock Stars)
What an outstanding compilation of artists who played at the International Pop Underground Convention in 1991. You read the performers list; from Bratmobile, to Courtney Love, to Bikini Kill, to Nirvana, to 7 Year Bitch. This is a beautiful 'snapshot' of the best of the early 90's west coast, and perhaps more importantly and as the liner notes accurately put it, 'all of these bands have faith in the future of punk rock and they are, without question, punk rock.' Kill Rock Stars is an excellent 14-track various-artists collection capturing the essence of early-'90s indie-rock pop underground. It's divided equally between amateurish indie-pop, abrasive punk and riot grrrl, featuring many of the best underground bands of that time, including Bratmobile, Mecca Normal, Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Unwound, Nation of Ulysses, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Nirvana, and Lois performing under the name Courtney Love. If there was a single compilation of 'Grunge' this would be it. Between Bikini Kill, Infamous Menagere and Nirvana, you really get a sense of what was going on during the early 1990s. I don't think it is over the top to say that this is a slice of music revolution. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]
Various Artists - Stubbs The Zombie: The Soundtrack LP (Shout Factory)
This 2005 collection is available for the first time on vinyl. All songs are exclusive to this album. The cult-classic videogame, Stubbs The Zombie: Rebel With A Pulse, was reissued in March 2021 with full press and advertising campaign, raising awareness and anticipation for the vinyl soundtrack. [RSD Black Friday bumped edition on splatter vinyl.]
Rufus Wainwright - Rufus Wainwright and Amsterdam Sinfonietta (Live) LP (Modern Recordings)
In January 2017 Rufus Wainwright toured with the prestigious all string ensemble Amsterdam Sinfonietta through the Netherlands. Critics and audiences of the ten concerts were enraptured by the intimacy and intensity of the program curated by Wainwright. The concerts reflected the immense bandwidth of Wainwright's musical influences and interests from Verdi Arias to Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell, from Rameau pieces to the American songbook and French chanson and from Wainwright's beloved Berlioz to his family's and his own songs, some of them written for this program. Emotional center piece of the album is Wainwright's almost 9 minute version of late Canadian singer songwriter Lhasa de Sela;s harrowing "I'm going in", a song she wrote about her own death from cancer at the age of 37. All arrangements were created specifically for the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and around Wainwright's voice that is truly at the peak of its power.

James White & The Blacks - Melt Yourself Down LP (Modern Harmonic)
