Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

20/20 - Back to California CD/LP (Spyderpop Records)

The return of power pop and new wave legends 20/20! Featuring 11 new original songs crafted by the band's original singer-songwriter duo of Steve Allen and Ron Flynt, Back to California stands with the very best of a beloved catalog that commenced with the band's undisputed classic self-titled debut album in 1979, and brings 20/20's music to a whole new generation of guitar pop fans and long-time followers alike.

Ben Barnes - Where the Light Gets In LP (Ben Barnes Music)

The debut album from Ben Barnes. The title of the album reflects the hopefulness of the songs, and the perspective earned through lived experience. Ben's personal hope for these songs is that they encourage finding clarity when life feels sombre, feeling powerful when pain tells you you're vulnerable and lovable when the world tries to tell you that you're not enough as you are. The album is about the different stages of a relationship; beginnings, tension, sorrow, sex, love, endings... nostalgia. It's about how our history and our scars configure to make us who we are in this moment. If a part of us has ever felt broken, we can mend... transforming ourselves into something more precious than we were before. The album was recorded at Apogee Studios in Santa Monica with the band all together, including James Valentine and Sam Farrar (Maroon 5) who also produced the record along with drummer/manager, Paul Hamilton.

Everything Is Recorded - Porcupine Tattoo 7” (XL Recordings)

Everything Is Recorded welcomes one of Drag City’s own to its hallowed ranks with the new single, “Porcupine Tattoo” (feat. Noah Cyrus and Bill Callahan) b/w “Norm” (feat. Bill Callahan) Limited-edition 7” vinyl single, which exclusively features a second collaboration between Everything Is Recorded and Callahan in the form of “Norm”, a tribute to the Austin-based singer songwriter’s favorite comedian, Norm MacDonald.

David Gray - Dear Life CD/2xLP (Laugh A Minute Records)

David Gray is back doing what he does better than almost anyone, and fans of complex, serious, lyrical songcraft should rejoice. Dear Life may be the deepest, strangest, loveliest album this pioneering British singer-songwriter has ever delivered. Years in the making, it is an album of emotional crisis and resolution, mortality and faith, reality and illusion, love and heartbreak, magic, science, loss and acceptance. Dear Life is David Gray's 13th album. It's the result of "a starburst of songwriting"... it just seemed like the gods of songwriting were being kind. An album of emotional crisis and resolution, mortality and faith, reality and illusion, love and heartbreak, magic, science, loss and acceptance. While it is full of yearning and hope, there is an undercurrent of darkness, a tension between competing forces of hope and despair: a cavalcade of emotions in what is his most lyrically-focused collection to-date.

Marina Herlop – Nekkuja LP (Pan)

Nekkuja is a place for Herlop's warmest, sweetest sentiments to rise to the surface and crack through the topsoil. She describes the record as a way for her to seek and affirm inner light, and it's undoubtedly her brightest, poppiest statement to date. The forward-thinking, experimental touches that nourished Pripyat are still present, but blessed with a level of positivity that's rare to find in a scene so entranced by darkness and melancholy.

Nicolas Jaar - Piedras 1 & 2 2LP (Other People)

The initial seed for this project was planted in 2020 when Nicolás Jaar wrote the song "Piedras" for a concert at the Museum of Memory & Human Rights in Santiago, Chile, which commemorates the victims of human rights violations during the military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet between 1973 and 1990. Between 2022-2023, it took on a new form as a radio play entitled Archivos de Radio Piedras, which was shared on a dedicated Telegram channel. Piedras 1 & 2 is a collection of the tracks featured within the play, all new music by Jaar, but partly presented within the play as the music of Salinas Hasbún (the name a composite homage to Jaar's grandmothers, Graciela Salinas and Miriam Hasbún). The play follows two friends mourning the disappearance of Salinas Hasbún, a musician and writer who vanished in the early 2020s. Although they live in a future where technology is advanced, they resort to DIY radio methods because the anonymous group "Las 0cho" has launched a worldwide attack on undersea internet cables, causing a global internet blackout. The play's central theme revolves around the idea that truths, memories and identities speak from the cracks, or the "in-between" spaces.

Jasmine.4.t - You Are the Morning CD/LP (Saddest Factory)

You Are The Morning was formed amid personal upheaval in 2021. "I came out as trans to my nearest and dearest," she says, "Some did not accept me, but some did." Jasmine got divorced, and a difficult home life meant she was writing while experiencing homelessness and precarious housing, sleeping on friend's couches and relying on community support. Despite the pain of some of it's background, the record is an uplifting look at t4t love. Jasmine describes her first trans romance as the first time she experienced joy in a deep sense, because of her experience of living as a woman. [Limited edition ‘girlbath’ pink vinyl.]

Lambrini Girls - Who Let the Dogs Out CD/LP (City Slang)

“Who Let the Dogs Out” is the debut album from Brighton based noise-punk duo Lambrini Girls, recorded with Gilla Band’s Daniel Fox with mixing by Seth Manchester (Mdou Moctar / Battles / Model/Actriz), “Who Let the Dogs Out” bottles everything wrong with the modern world and shakes it up. If peppering political songs with humour is like sticking a sparkler in some bread, then “Who Let the Dogs Out” is like a fireworks display in the factory itself: strange, dangerous, exciting. The album rips through a laundry list of social ills. Sirens blare over a heavy distorted bass and a live drum breakbeat. The band dance between upbeat pop punk, dirty grunge tones and discordant post-punk. There’s even some noise-pop cheer for putting yourself first, whether it’s having an autistic meltdown or doing a poo at your mate’s house. [Indie exclusive blue vinyl.]

M Slago - And We Are Here LP (self-released)

Nashville producer M Slago and your favorite emcee’s favorite emcee, Homeboy Sandman, team up to take you for a trip on the M Slago feature release And We Are Here. As with their previous works together, this album is full of insightful and unique rhyme schemes from Homeboy Sandman as he hits cruise control over the freshly paved production highway laid down by M Slago. The tandem proves that the destination is one thing, but the journey is really where it’s at.

Angela Muñoz - Descanso LP (Stones Throw)

Angela Muñoz is a singer-songwriter, born, raised, and based in East Los Angeles. Descanso is her debut release on Stones Throw, paying homage to Angela’s Mexican and Puerto Rican roots. Written with her brother, the EP makes space for Angela’s powerful, soulful voice and marks a new chapter as she comes of age, reflects on memories from her upbringing, and looks back to her childhood.

Nourished By Time - Erotic Probiotic 2 LP (XL Recordings)

Filtering the sound of ’80s freestyle through a buoyant, time-warped haze, the debut album from singer/producer Marcus Brown is both captivating and elusive.

Pro-Teens - MF Teen: Your Concurrence In the Above Is Assumed LP (College of Knowledge)

Enigmatic instrumental group from The Pro-Teens pay tribute to the late great rapper MF DOOM, reimagining 14 iconic cuts through a wonky boom bap funk lens. Helmed by Hudson Whitlock, prolific drummer and percussionist of Karate Boogaloo and Surprise Chef, Melbourne's The Pro-Teens is a collective of instrumentalists making weirdo instrumental soul records.

Rico Puestel - Turmoil 2LP (Exhibition)

A surprising landmark album comeback for Rico Puestel, defining a musical and personal turning point with a completely new and re-invented artistry. "4U" opens the Pandora's Box of Turmoil with inimitable meditative beauty, descending into the metaphorical and tonal "Slices Of Life" that unleashes a complex chain of energy while "Whereto" even overcomes this high voltage setup with a deadly infective loop and the only reminiscences of something to call techno on this album in its fading conclusion. Before "Heart Of Gold" defines the probably most immersive peak on Turmoil with its vast soundscape and mantra-like piano shuffle, "Questions" floats in dubstep'ish ways to actually raise two questions to the listener while this train keeps on going.

Saint Etienne - The Night CD/LP (Heavenly)

British indie pop mainstays Saint Etienne follow their critically acclaimed 2021 album, I've Been Trying To Tell You, with 12th studio album, The Night. Contining Saint Etienne's tradition of immersive storytelling through sound, The Night delivers an ambient escape from the chaos of daily life by captures the essence of the after-hours. It takes listeners on a journey through layered tranquility, offering calm to restless minds and a gentle respite from modern life's relentless pace. The album, which was produced by Saint Etienne in collaboration with composer and producer Augustin Bousfield, was recorded across two locations in Saltaire and Hove, from January to August 2024. The cover features a photograph by architectural photographer Darren Holden, while the album's sleeve notes are penned by award-winning author and journalist Ben Myers.

Songhoy Blues - Heritage CD/LP (Transgressive)

From the first listening to Héritage, the much-awaited fourth album by Songhoy Blues, it's clear that the 4-piece rock band from northern Mali are in a new frame of mind, moving into a more acoustic, creative re-imagining of the "desert blues" style that has brought them to world fame. For over a decade, when not on tour, the four members of Songhoy Blues, three of whom are originally from the north, have been based in Bamako, capital of Mali, unable to return to their homeland, where musicians are in real danger of their lives because of religious fanaticism that sees music as 'haram' (a sin). Charismatic, articulate and creative, the band burst onto the scene in 2013 with a powerful style and stage manner once described as "Timbuktu Punk". Their songs deal with issues of life and love in Mali, and are based on five-note scales, rock rhythms, gritty vocals, and glittering guitar. These elements are ever present in their new album Héritage, but with a more intimate groove laced with other sounds from different ethnic traditions from around the country. The experience of being in Bamako, a melting pot of music, has led Songhoy Blues to rethink their own understanding of the concept of tradition. It does not come from one single source.

Squanderers - If A Body Meet A Body LP (Shimmy Disc)

Squanderers are the glowingly new-2024 vintage-trio of guitarists Wendy Eisenberg and David Grubbs alongside multi-instrumentalist and legendary producer Kramer. In Grubbs's book-length poem, The Voice in the Headphones, "Squanderer" is the nickname that most deeply troubles of the book's unnamed protagonist: "Hang your head, Squanderer. You'll never darken the doorway of Studio A." Will this trio of inveterate Squanderers redeem themselves?

Stress Eater - Stress Eater CD/CS (Silver Age)

After endless requests for a Czarface and Dr. Octagon collaboration, the comic book inspired supergroup Czarface takes a turn for the cosmic, creating a funky full length adventure with the spacey Kool Keith! When the record is playing, they become a counterpart character that can even give the mighty Czarface a run for his money- Stress Eater! You can expect a rich blend of what makes both acts so special: block-rocking beats and bizarre, mind-bending lyricism...all served up with a cover from Czarface artist Lamour Supreme. Released on vinyl for Black Friday, now available on CD and cassette.

Tremonti – The End Will Show Us How CD/LP (Napalm)

After 18 full-length albums, a Grammy Award, cumulative streams in the billions, and total sales of 60 million units worldwide across his inexhaustible output with Creed, Alter Bridge, and his solo band, Mark Tremonti continues to relentlessly push himself as a guitarist, vocalist, and a songwriter. He levels up all around on his 19th overall LP and sixth Tremonti full-length, The End Will Show Us How, on which he is joined by bandmates Eric Friedman [guitar], Ryan Bennett [drums], and Tanner Keegan [bass]. The End Will Show Us How charges with inspirational lyricism, metallic barrages, and Mark Tremonti’s most incisive displays of fret fireworks - a testament to his legacy of ceaseless creativity and a certified triumph.

Various Artists - Destroy All Neighbors soundtrack LP (Mutant)

Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood. William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), is a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, facing a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). He finally works up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, and William inadvertently decapitates him. But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William's accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla. The soundtrack is an infectious slice of progressive rock cues, EDM freakouts, 80's synth pop and so much more by the brilliant Ryan Kattner & Brett Morris. Released in conjunction with SUB POP Records, and features an original song by MAN MAN, artwork by Johnny Dombrowski, and pressed on coloured vinyl.

The Weather Station - Humanhood CD/LP (Fat Possum)

The Weather Station returns with new album Humanhood following up 2021's Album of the Year, Ignorance. The Weather Station's previous album, Ignorance, was #1 AOTY at The New Yorker, UNCUT, The Globe and Mail, The Observer and top 10 at New York Times, The Guardian, PItchfork, PASTE, Exclaim, Rolling Stone Germany, Magnet, The Quietus, Sunday Times, Stereogum, and many more. This record was performed by six musicians improvising live off the floor in two sessions in late 2023. This band shaped the music indelibly in form, arrangement, mood, and feeling. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

Weeks Island – Droste LP (DFA)

The Weeks Island project began in 2018 when, itching for something during a break from his gig playing guitar for the Grammy-winning Cajun group Lost Bayou Ramblers, Jonny Campos ventured to his bandmate's house and recorded a series of deep, amoebic, ambient pedal steel passages across two afternoons. It wasn't all heavy, though: he paid that bandmate, Kirkland Middleton, in Cane's chicken strips. The tracks on Droste are named for bodies of water that no longer exist, their names wiped from maps thanks to the disintegrating shorelines of Southern Louisiana. That feeling of impermanence hangs over this record - the tracks don't so much begin and end as slip in and out of your consciousness. It can be a serene passive listen or a deep one that marinates long after the runout.

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Like Someone In Love LP (Blue Note)

The 1960 edition of the Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers was one of the band's greatest line-ups with the drummer joined by trumpeter Lee Morgan, saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt. Opening with a sublimely swinging version of the title track, the rest of Like Someone In Love presented originals by Morgan and Shorter.

Carmike - Comin' at Yo Ass LP (Now Again)

The latest release in Now Again's Memphis Rap series, presented on vinyl for the first time ever. Slithering nightmare raps recorded between carjackings and robberies, the only album by Carmike. This is part of Now Again Records multiple LP series on the History of Memphis Rap, which attempts to capture Memphis and its underground rap scene as it began to pro - duce some of the most distinctive music of the 90s. This was a unique hip-hop strain - visceral and often vicious. It was a local, lo-fi, cassette-tape based movement - yet it went on to change the course of rap music. These albums were all licensed directly from their original creators, and come on limited edition colored vinyl with artist-approved imagery for their first LP iterations. [Galaxy Emerald colored vinyl pressing.]

Olivia Dean - Live at Eventim Apollo 2xLP (Island)

Live recording of the 2nd night of the 3-night sold-out run at the iconic Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith in May 2024. Tracklist includes Dive, The Hardest Part, Time and Touching Toes.

Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead (aka Skull & Roses) 2xLP (Rhino)

New reissue of the Dead’s second live album, commonly referred to as “Skull & Roses”.

Grateful Dead - Dick’s Picks Vol. 3 4xLP (Real Gone Music)

Dick's Picks Vol. 3 Pembroke Pines, Florida 5/22/77 Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala considered this show to be the finest outing on the entire Spring 1977 tour, and, as any Dead Head knows, that is high praise indeed! At the time this was released on CD, the Dead weren't sure a market existed (ha!) for three and four-CD packages, so this four-LP set leaves off eight songs from the show, but consider what songs are here: a phenomenal "Help on the Way"/"Slipknot!"/"Franklin's Tower" comes after one of the definitive renditions of "Sugaree" and a terrific "The Music Never Stopped," with the late, great Phil Lesh's slithering bass leading the way in recording engineer's Betty Cantor-Jackson's mix. But sides E, F & G offer one of those sublime (and, in this case, never to be repeated) sequences of songs that only the Dead could pull off in concert; after the rarely-performed "Sunrise," a medley of "Estimated Prophet"/"Eyes of the World"/"Wharf Rat"/"Terrapin Station" (a truncated version two months before it's official release)/"Morning Dew" brings the show home, as Jerry Garcia's soloing on "Morning Dew" reaches heights seldom attained even by him. This was a knockout release on it's first very limited vinyl run (check out those resale prices), and we've improved on it with a fresh mastering job by Jeffrey Norman (in his own words, "the sound is better than the original heard on the Brookvale release"), and lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music. Pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at the plant we've been using to great acclaim for all of our Grateful Dead releases, Gotta Groove Records.

Freddie Hubbard - Here to Stay LP (Blue Note)

Blue Note Classic Vinyl Reissue Series! 180g Vinyl LP! Mastered by Kevin Gray from Original Analog Tapes!

Ginger Johnson and His African Messengers - African Party 2xLP (bbe)

The story of percussionist, band leader, teacher, club owner Ginger Johnson and his African Party album is a fascinating tale that is only now being recognised for its significance. In the 1950s he was the featured percussionist for the Edmundo Ros Orchestra, and also released several of his own 78s and 45s for Melodisc which were among the first examples of African music recorded and released in Britain. From his base in Pimlico, Ginger became the lynchpin of the African and West Indian expat musical community, including being mentor to a young Fela Kuti when he first came to London in 1957.In March 1967 Ginger and his group entered Sound Techniques Studio, in Chelsea, to record the African Party album. The multi-layered drum patterns combined with jazz horn lines and vocals sung in the Yoruba dialect, the recordings were unlike anything else of the time and still sparkle with energy and vitality that remains undiminished almost 60 years later. The album is often cited as the foundation of Afrobeat – and his African Messengers group functioned as the finishing school for highly renowned musicians like Michael "Bami" Rose, as well as members of Osibisa and Cymande.

Denise LaSalle - Trapped By a Thing Called Love LP (Org Music)

Denise LaSalle's seminal debut record for Westbound Records, released in 1972, introduced the world at large to a storming force in blues. At Westbound, Denise refined her Chicago Blues roots and recorded Trapped By A Thing Called Love, adding contemporary and soulful arrangements to her flawless songs. The result garnered huge hits, a massive fan base, and put Ms. LaSalle on track to being crowned "Queen Of The Blues." It remains an undisputed classic of the genre. The album has been remastered by Dave Gardner for it's first pressing in more half a century, as part of Org Music's ongoing Westbound Records reissue series.

Los Straitjackets - Jet Set LP (Yep Roc)

Jet Set is a collection of 15 carefully crafted guitar-driven songs that prove to be the most diverse and inventive of Los StraitJackets' oeuvre. The album was recorded at The Pow Wow Fun Room studios in Los Angeles with producer and friend Janne Haavisto (of Laika and the Cosmonauts) and includes a few guest appearances by The Basic Cable Horns (from the Conan show) and Finnish actress and musician Irina Bjorklund. Jet Set delivers the high-energy rock and roll instrumental music fans have come to expect from Los StraitJackets. This pressing of Los StraitJackets' long-out-of-print 2012 classic is pressed on orange vinyl and limited to 500 copies.

Los Straitjackets - Supersonic Guitars in 3-D LP (Yep Roc)

For their seventh album, the mighty, masked Los StraitJackets holed up in a secret San Diego location with mad scientist of sound, producer Mark Neill to create the 13 terrifying tracks that make up Supersonic Guitars in 3-D. Rumors of secret Aztec rituals, animal sacrifice, and other unholy alliances are easy to believe when you hear the gargantuan guitar tones & dominating drum sounds that were achieved. Adding to the fun, the album features guest appearances from Billy Zoom, DJ Bonebrake, Don Fleming and Jon Spencer. This is the first time that this 2003 masterpiece has been reissued on vinyl since it's original pressing over two decades ago! This pressing is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide and is pressed on clear vinyl with blue and red swirls to match the 3-D cover artwork. And yes, 3-D glasses are included in the sleeve!

Low - The Exit Papers LP (Temporary Residence)

Gold Vinyl. At the turn of the 21st Century, sandwiched between two of their most iconic albums - Secret Name and Things We Lost In The Fire - Low released The Exit Papers as part of Temporary Residence Ltd.'s long-running CD subscription series, Travels In Constants. A sparse suite of six mostly instrumental pieces composed for a film that never existed, The Exit Papers still stands as Low's most haunting and experimental work. Originally released exclusively on CD in a scarce edition of only 1,000 copies, Low helps celebrate the 20th anniversary of Temporary Residence by finally releasing The Exit Papers on vinyl and all digital formats for the first time ever.

The Mystery Lights - Too Much Tension! LP (Wick Records)

Reissue of The Mystery Lights's sophomore album on Daptone's rock subsidiary, Wick Records, which finds the group digging deeper into their well of eclectic influences, enriching their sound without echoing the past. It mixes the eerie, insistent synth sounds of groups like The Normal and Suicide, the energy and swagger of punk’s golden age, the pop sensibility of The Kinks, and the stark, deliberate execution of Television. The Mystery Lights are taking their idiosyncratic brand of rock and roll to dizzying new heights. [Indie exclusive transparent yellow vinyl.]

Rebirth Brass Band - Hot Venom 2xLP (Mardi Gras Records)

Rebirth Brass Band is New Orleans premier Brass Band. This is their 2001 recording that includes their collaboration with Rap Legends Soulja Slim ("You Don't Wanna Go To War") and Cheeky Blakk ("Pop That Pussy"). First time on vinyl!

Songs: Ohia - Travels in Constants LP (Temporary Residence)

Sometime in 2001 - sandwiched between the release of Ghost Tropic and it's follow-up, the cryptic classic, Didn't It Rain - Songs: Ohia recorded an EP for Temporary Residence's distance-themed subscription series, Travels In Constants. The untitled EP consisted of a single 18-minute song - performed live by Jason Molina in his living room, recorded directly to 4-track cassette as the sounds of a typical Chicago night bled through the air. Built solely from an acoustic guitar and Molina's familiar melancholy croon, it's a hauntingly intimate track. Molina once remarked that it was "probably too out there" for a proper Songs: Ohia album, which is perhaps why is felt right at home in this context. Scarcely available in it's original CD-only edition of 1,000 copies, Travels In Constants has finally been remastered and reissued for vinyl and digital formats.

The SteelDrivers - The Muscle Shoals Recordings LP (Down the Road)

Vinyl reissue of the 2015 album. Over the past 20 years, The SteelDrivers have become one of the biggest names in progressive bluegrass. After four Grammy nominations, the Americana Music Association’s New Artist of the Year and IBMA’s 2009 Emerging Artist of The Year, The Muscle Shoals Recordings took them to the next level, winning the band their first Grammy Award and landing them another #1 Bluegrass album. Stirring Southern soul, Nashville country, deep blues, and wooden-church gospel into bluegrass, The SteelDrivers created a hybrid old as the hills and fresh as morning dew. Or, as a slack-jawed Vince Gill described their sound more directly, “an incredible combination.” Featuring production & guitar by Jason Isbell. Includes "Drinkin' Alone," written by former SteelDriver Chris Stapleton.

Jade Stone & Luv - Mosaics; Pieces of Stone LP (Subliminal Sounds)

The sole album from this male-female duo is a lost gem from the heart of the psychedelic 1970s. A long-time cult item and highly praised in the Acid Archives book. Composed and self-produced in Nashville, Mosaics went unnoticed by the music industry upon release. While almost unknown outside specialist circles, it has been a long-time underground cult favorite. The combination of top-level songwriting, skillful guitar/keyboard arrangements and soaring vocals is just too impressive to ignore. One of Jade & Luv’s earliest advocates was the legendary NYC musicologist and Endless Boogie bandleader Paul Major. Here’s a typical Major impression of the music on Mosaics: "Groovy love vibes thru a prism of jade statues in swinging singles apartment complex action. Cadillac with fuzzy dice, feather boa, lotsa cigarette burns, stale perfumed ashen air. This album in the 8-track player at 5 AM with someone you don't even know passed out in the backseat, as you head to the diner to meet up with an early-bird Lava Lite salesman who deals pills on the side. Bubbly champagne molecules become the plastic vinyl booths in dim-lit dive bars; it's cracker box post-war suburban low-rent psychedelic". [A multi-colored vinyl pressing is available.]

The Story So Far - Under Soil and Dirt LP (Pure Noise)

The debut album from The Story So Far. These 11 songs do burst with the cathartic desperation of the former and the boundless urgency of the latter. Rough but catchy, raw but well-recorded, songs such as "High Regard" and the terse, broken-hearted indictment of "Mt. Diablo" threaten to burst with youthful, angst-ridden aggression. While these are powerful, punchy anthems, there are subtleties and nuances in the arrangements that elevate the likes of "Quicksand" and "Daughters" to be more than just another batch of angry songs sung by frustrated young men. Under Soil and Dirt 10 Year Anniversary Picture Disc - Limited to 5000 - Die Cut Gatefold Jacket - Screenprinted Slipmat

Tokyo Police Club - Champ LP (Mom+Pop)

The band’s classic second album, newly reissued on baby blue vinyl and blue & white wave vinyl. As its name suggests, Champ is a triumph – an album of taut catchy anthems that display a vigour and fizz and from the Toronto four piece. Stand out songs include the electronic pop of “Bambi,” the curiously titled duo “Favourite Foods” and “Favourite Colour” and the urgently anthemic “Wait Up (Boots of Danger).” Again Dave Monk’s lyrics are a real highlight with strikingly juxtaposed imagery – “the killer with the coloured kite,” “the national child star in a coat and a scarf, alone in the laundromat.” Ultimately, though it’s the fizz bomb youthful energy of the songs that appeals most.

Peter Tosh - Wanted Dread & Alive LP (Rhino)

Wanted Dread & Alive, released in 1981, is an album that underscores Peter Tosh's status as a reggae icon and a vocal critic of social injustices. The album's title reflects Tosh's rebellious spirit and his fight against systemic oppression. Tracks like "Coming in Hot" and "Rastafari Is" showcase his fiery lyricism and commitment to Rastafarian principles.

Tina Turner - Rough CD/LP (Rhino / Parlophone)

1978's Rough saw Turner depart from the high-octane rock and soul sound of previous albums. Recently separated from her husband and musical partner Ike Turner, this album carved a new musical identity blending disco and blues with the opening track "Fruits of the Night" and Bob Segar's "Fire Down Below." Billboard dubbed the album as an "adventurous variety of old and new material," adding that Turner's "delivery has lost none of it's snap and crackle.

Various Artists – Call Me Old Fashioned LP (Numero)

Struck for circulation after 63 years in hock within the Lou-Mood Pictures vault, this previously unissued soundtrack traffics in the high-tone timbre and highball-sipping swoon of pop's post-war years. Muddling together sugar-lipped divas, barrel-aged big bands, and "zoo be zoo be zoo" zest, with a Latin jazz Luxardo for garnish, Call Me Old Fashioned is a 40-minute stereo-sonic adventure for the 7& 7 spy-fi fanatic. [A gold colorway is available.]

Yo La Tengo - Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo 2xLP (Matador)

Back in print for the first time in over 20 years, the compilation assembles more than two hours of hard to find and unreleased Yo La Tengo music from 1988 - 1995, on 2 LPs.

Warren Zevon - Excitable Boy LP (Elektra)

New repress. One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon's top selling 1978 album. Includes the classic single Werewolves of London.

Will Orman
