Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Moon Taxi - Silver Dream signed LP/CD (BMG)

New album from Nashville’s Moon Taxi, on exclusive-to-Grimey's orange crush vinyl and CD, with all copies signed by the band! Rolling Stone has said that “over the last few years, Nashvile’s Moon Taxi have worked their way up from Bonnaroo buzz-band to something approaching Kings of Leon country, playing a pleasingly cross-bred rock - a little indie, a little proggy, kinda poppy”; NPR’s World Cafe praised the band’s “strong pop sense expressed through the soulful vocals of Trevor Terndrup and an experimental edge that connects it to synth pop and electronic dance music.” Available in the shop or in the Grimey's webstore.

You can catch a special Moon Taxi performance at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville tonight live-streamed via Fans Live here. They’re working to raise money for Crew Nation by accepting donations for this otherwise free performance.

Ashnikko - Demidevil LP (Parlophone)

This mixtape is Ashnikko's first release since 2019's Hi, It's Me, the EP that introduced the world to "STUPID": her scariest iteration yet. The homicidal rap song propelled Ash to viral fame, spawning millions of TikToks. After a US tour with rapper Danny Brown, a headline-stealing femdom appearance flanked by male servants on the red carpet at the BRITs 2020, a Doja Cat support tour and string of sold-out headline shows of her own on the horizon, the coronavirus lockdown hit. That's when she threw her energy into compiling her best project yet: a collection of songs that celebrate female sexuality and noughties pop, featuring Grimes, Princess Nokia, Kelis, a musical theater number about the clitoris, and countless vicious one-liners.

William Basinski - Lamentations 2xLP (Temporary Residence)

William Basinski's reputation as the foremost producer of profound meditations on death and decay has long been established, but on his new album, Lamentations, he transforms operatic tragedy into abyssal beauty. More than any other work since The Disintegration Loops, there is an ominous grief throughout the album, and that sense of loss lingers like an emotional vapor. Captured and constructed from tape loops and studies from Basinski's archives - dating back to 1979 - Lamentations is over forty years of mournful sighs meticulously crafted into songs. They are shaped by the inevitable passage of time and the indisputable collapsing of space - and their collective resonance is infinite and eternal. Pearlescent bronze vinyl.

The Bright Siders - A Mind of Your Own LP/CD (Smithsonian Folkways)

Brimming with uplifting and empowering songs, the album invites its listeners to think deeply on feelings and emotions that come with growing up, while focusing on resilience and mindset. Along with a slew of all-star guests including Ed Helms, The War and Treaty, Oh Pep!, The Hokes (a.k.a. Punch Brothers), Gaby Moreno, and more, The Bright Siders bring profound sensitivity and vivacity to songs about friendship, bullying, anger, acceptance of others, and coping with sadness and change. This music is sure to spark meaningful conversations and bring families closer as they explore the beauty and complexity of their emotional lives together.

L.I.T.A.N.I.E.S is a project featuring the lyrics of Australian polymath Nick Cave matched with the music of Belgian composer Nicholas Lens. Having collaborated on 2014's Shell Shock in 2014, they joined forces again during the lockdown to create this new work. Inner peace and stillness were the initial inspiration for the minimalistic, at times trance-like music, featuring Lens's daughter Clara-Lane on vocals. There is a clear purpose about the finished opera, a work of gentle beauty.

Iconic singer-songwriter, producer, Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band mainstay and Country Music Association Musician of the Year award-winner for the last dozen years, Mac McAnally embarks on something entirely new on his fifteenth solo album Once in a Lifetime. To reflect the intimacy of his concerts, he arranged most of the material around guitar and percussion – yet he acknowledges that several of its tracks outgrew that simple set-up. Rhye - Home 2xLP (Loma Vista)

Written throughout 2019 and early 2020, recorded at Milosh's home studio, United Recording Studios and Revival at The Complex, and mixed by Alan Moulder. Home is familiar in its synthesis of propulsive beats, orchestral flourishes, piano ruminations and sultry, gender-nonconforming vocals, but never have they sounded more cohesive or alive. Home is bookended by celestial cantos sung by the Danish National Girls' Choir, who Rhye performed with at a landmark concert in Denmark in 2017. Various Artists - Somewhere Between: Mutant Pop, Electronic Minimalism & Shadow Sounds of Japan 1980-1988 2xLP (Light In The Attic)

The latest release in LITA's acclaimed Japan Archival series hovers vibe–wise between distinct poles of two previous releases: Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980–1990 and Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1976–1986. Sonically, Somewhere Between mines the midpoint between Kankyō Ongaku’s sparkling atmospherics and Pacific Breeze’s metropolitan boogie, encompassing ambient pop, underground electronics, liminal minimalism and shadow sounds—all descriptors emphasizing the hazy nature of the nebula. Out–of–focus rhythms wear ethereal accoutrements, ballads are shrouded in static, and angular drums snake skyward on transcendent tones. From the Avant–minimalism of Mkwaju Ensemble and Yoshio Ojima, to the leftfield techno-pop of Mishio Ogawa and Noriko Miyamoto (featuring members of Yellow Magic Orchestra), and highlights from the groundbreaking Osaka underground label Vanity Records, these are blurry constellations defying collective categorization.
