Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Langhorne Slim - Strawberry Mansion LP/CD (Dualtone)
Written in his home after his adopted hometown of Nashville was hit by a tornado and the world was hit by a global pandemic, Langhorne Slim's Strawberry Mansion was born while writing a song a day to help reignite his artistic muse. What results is a collection of bursts of joy, hope, struggle, and honest moments from a tumultuous time. All copies of the vinyl and CD at Grimey’s are signed by the artist! Available in the shop or online.
Lucero - When You Found Me LP/CD (Liberty & Lament/Thirty Tigers)
On the tenth studio album from long-time Memphis band Lucero, singer and songwriter Ben Nichols leads his bandmates through 10 songs that celebrate the rock & roll influences he heard on the radio throughout his youth in a series of story songs that reflect his new-found domestic bliss. The band’s middle-America-meat-&-potatoes rock sound is recognizable immediately in Nichols’ gravelly baritone vocals and Brian Venable’s crunchy Southern rock guitar sounds, but the secret sauce that holds things together is Rick Steff’s piano & Hammond B3 parts, augmented this time around by the cinematic expanse of tastefully placed synthesizers. In the past, the band has delved into the rock & soul roots of their native city with the aid of a horn section, but here on When You Found Me, Lucero relies entirely on the quintet’s organic musical chemistry and the strengths of Nichols’ songs. Indie exclusive 180gram coke bottle clear vinyl with poster by Ben Nichols.
Animal Collective - Bridge To Quiet EP (Domino)
Bridge to Quiet is an EP from Animal Collective originally released digitally in July 2020 and now available on vinyl. The band had the following to say around its original release: "During April and May, we took a look at some of our improvisations from 2019 and early 2020. We remixed them, collaged them, and built them into songs, finding our way to Bridge to Quiet. We hope you enjoy it!” Includes download.
Tamar Aphek - All Bets Are Off LP (Kill Rock Stars)
For Tamar Aphek, the freedom to improvise was essential to creating the incredible ups-and-downs expressed on her solo debut, All Bets Are Off. From the machine-gun percussiveness of 'Crossbow, to the creeping desolation of 'Russian Winter' to the intimate insights of 'All I Know' the album delights in twists and turns. Commenting on jealousy and surveillance, love and compassion, anger and escape, and countless more challenges unrevealed, it's no wonder Aphek hoped to capture 'the feeling of a rollercoaster.' All Bets Are Off was record at the Daptone Records Studio, mixed by Daniel Schlett (War on Drugs, DIIV) and mastered by Greg Calbi.
The Ar-Kaics - To Be Free b/w Easy 7” (Wick Records)
The Ar-Kaics are back with a double shot of their endangered mode of recreational expression / rebellion, and doing it just for Kaics! Recorded at Daptone amid the gloom and decay of the day, 'To Be Free' b/w 'Easy' showcase the band's primitive garage sound in two nasty flights of fancy. Wash it down with the fun punch straight from the bowl, and listen for the proto-psych and outright punk nonsense a-brewing. With a new drummer in tow, free & easy is the rally cry for their new lease on psych. Communion for heads and seekers alike!
Baio - Dead Hand Control LP (Glassnote)
Baio, best known for playing bass in the Grammy Award winning band Vampire Weekend, releases his third studio album Dead Hand Control. The album was recorded over 18 months at Damon Albarn's 12 Studios in London and at Baio's personal studio, C+C Music Factory. Dead Hand Control volleys between explorations of the basic notion of caring for one another to themes of a society in upheaval. Includes download.
The Besnard Lakes - Are The Last Of The Great Thunderstorm Warnings 2xLP (Fatcat Records)
The Besnard Lakes have passed through death and they're here to tell the tale. Nearly five years after their last lightning-tinted volley, the magisterial Montreal psych- rock band have sworn off compromise and completed a searing, 72-minute suite about the darkness of dying and the light on the other side. Ignited by their love for each other, for playing music together, the sextet found themselves unspooling the most uncompromising recording of their career. Despite all it's grandeur,"... The Last of the Great Thunderstorm Warnings" honors the very essence of punk rock: the notion that a band need only be relevant to itself. At last the Besnard Lakes have crafted a continuous long-form suite: nine tracks that could be listened together as one, like Spiritualized's "Lazer Guided Melodies" or even "Dark Side of the Moon," overflowing with melody and harmony, drone and dazzle, the group's own unique weather.
Blackpink - The Album LP (Interscope)
Debut album by the K-Pop band. Pink vinyl.
Chico Mann (Marcos Garcia of Antibalas) - Double Life LP (Ubiquity Recordings)
The latest release for the Antibalas guitarist. “When I moved from NY to LA, my intention was to start this AfroRock band, Here Lies Man. What you're hearing on this record is music I wrote for that band but has been reimagined to bring it back to its original form.” Using fewer elements of Highlife for its brand of Afrobeat, Double Life infuses more blues elements while still retaining an Afrobeat authenticity representative of African diasporic music. Seamlessly switching between genres throughout his career, such as Afrobeat with his work in Antibalas to dance-oriented adventures as a duo with Captain Planet, the current project explores the realm of Afrobeat with psychedelic flashes in a cinematic fashion. Limited black and white haze colored vinyl pressing.
Cub Scout Blowing Pins - Heaven Beats Iowa 7”/CD (GBV, Inc)
Cub Scout Bowling Pins is the new secret identity of indie rock super-heroes GUIDED BY VOICES, turning up the craziness knob by 10%.
The Dip - The Dip Plays it Cool 10" (The Dip)
Limited edition 10" release. This new offering shows the band expanding to inhabit compositions that are cinematic in scope; picture it as the soundtrack to an imaginary Tarantino short film. Coming on the heels of 2020’s breakout LP The Dip Delivers, which debuted at #25 on the Billboard R&B chart, followed by a club tour and multiple festival appearances - this instrumental offering is both concise and expansive while highlighting the group’s flexibility and evolution. Comes with a free Koozie™ while supplies last.
Terrence Dixon - From the Far Future Pt. 3 3xLP (Tresor)
Continuing the story of his previous two iterations on this title, the Detroit techno veteran's latest release is a serene undertaking of unrivalled Motor City rhythms and sound, finding the producer oscillating from excursions in paradises of synth pointillism to husky storytelling and his peculiar beat work. A master in letting shapes find their form, Dixon allows the listener to wallow in recurring scenes, such as etching a sound world of choral vibrations and cinematic dirge. Not least an expert in industrial abstraction, a human silhouette permeates Dixon's sound. The first two records of the series are rightfully considered among the finest embodiments of contemporary minimalism, symbolic documents of Afro-futurism. This new work revives the classic series, continuing the relationship between Tresor and the undisputed master of Detroit techno into the present day. Includes one vinyl-only track.
DJ Deep - Fosph 12" EP (Tresor)
DJ Deep's first release for Tresor since 2015. His mixes reveal the breadth of his influences, drawing from essential Chicago and Detroit house sounds and blending Afro-percussion and dub, revealing an ear sensitively tuned to the ground searching stories through music. Fosph proves an EP of real mastery that exudes techno, its drive, phasing patterns and melodic minimalism. Jungle cacophony gives way to TR-909 workouts, and 90s ambience colors resonant percussive expressionism.
Goat Girl - On All Fours 2xLP/CD (Rough Trade)
The Goat Girl that’s releasing On All Fours is not the same band that arrived with their self-titled debut in 2018. It’s been a traumatic and transformative three years for the London four-piece; guitarist L.E.D. was diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma, thankfully now in remission. Her illness, combined with political upheaval, left the group shaken but more determined and outspoken. Goat Girl was filled with woozy songs, many of which blitzed by in less than two minutes. There was a mellow, unhurried approach that cultivated a sense of anything goes – punk in demeanor more than style. On All Fours finds fresh ways to keep you guessing, adding in synths not to smooth out their sound, but to further stretch its boundaries. At the same time, the lyrics are more direct and take aim at the plagues of the world and the band members’ inner psyche. The result is a record anchored by strong songwriting that gives the band room to head out into some strange and refreshing territory.
Guided By Voices - Styles We Paid For LP (GBV, Inc)
Finally available on vinyl! Styles We Paid For stands as a testament to this Year In Isolation, reflecting these dark days through Robert Pollard's prism, with the band sounding as confident and authoritative as ever. The fifteen tracks were recorded remotely during quarantine from five states (Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Tennessee) to comprise GBV's ninth album since 2017. While other bands have been napping, GBV have achieved their second consecutive hat-trick (three albums per annum), and have further cemented their status as rock legends for achieving more in this bleak year then most bands do across their entire careers. Includes download.
Jneiro Jarel - After a Thousand Years LP (Far Out Recordings)
Over the course of a twenty-year career, Jneiro Jarel has collaborated with MF DOOM, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, BadBadNotGood, Portishead's Beth Gibbons, and many more, becoming renowned for his consistently distinctive, forward thinking productions. The influence of Africa and its musical history on North and South America is key to his latest album's sound, which draws from Brazilian music and Latin jazz, as well as stateside jazz, soul, and funk - Jarel exquisitely synthesizes the swing of his native New Orleans jazz, the vibrance of Costa Rican rainforests, and the influence of his vast collection of Brazilian records. Taking its inspiration from the biblical prophecies foretelling the fully realized, physical and spiritual restoration of the earth and mankind after the thousand year reign of the Messianic Kingdom, After A Thousand Years contemplates and celebrates a world where everlasting love, peace, and harmony abound under a sovereign, divine rulership.
Alina Kalancea - Impedance 2xLP (Important Records)
Alina Kalancea is a Romanian sound artist and composer based in Modena, Italy, working in the realm of sound design and synthesis. Impedance is an instrumental album spanning four sides, containing powerful rhythmic sequences, heart-beating frequencies and hypnotic loops that are paradoxically encapsulated in carefully crafted compositions which are full of secret passages and hidden doors. Kalancea's work creates ungraspable sonic experiences, which overtakes you, immersing its listeners in powerful and mind-altering soundscapes. This is the sound of new, patient electronic music, full of depth and substance. Recommended for fans of Caterina Barbieri, Eliane Radigue, Alessandro Cortini, etc.
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio - I Told You So LP/CD (Colemine)
Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio—or as it is sometimes referred to, DLO3—specialize in the lost art of “feel good music.” The ingredients of this intoxicating cocktail include a big helping of the 1960s organ jazz stylings of Jimmy Smith and Baby Face Willette; a pinch of the snappy soul strut of Booker T. The M.G.’s and The Meters; and sprinkles Motown, Stax Records, blues, and cosmic Jimi Hendrix-style guitar. It’s a soul-jazz concoction that goes straight to your heart and head makes your body break out in a sweat. The trio returns now with their second studio album, I Told You So, with even heavier grooves and more confidence.
Josh Okeefe - Bloomin’ Josh Okeefe LP (Anti Corp)
A rebel artist, protest singer, the heir to Bob Dylan, or - when he's doing one of his lighter satirical numbers - a harmonica-tootin' Mr. Bean... with raw, topical storytelling and a voice that crackles with authentic folk tradition, Okeefe is all of these and more.
Osees - Metamorphosed LP (Rock Is Hell Records)
It seems that every time you turn around, there's another Oh Sees [OSEES] slab. Long ago we lost all capacity to be surprised that this sturdy unit keeps putting out records and that they're really good. You can now add the Metamorphosed 12-inch to you ever deeper sagging row of John Dwyer and Co.'s seemingly no sleep releaseschedule. The five tracks were taken from the sessions that formed 2019's Face Stabber album, a seventeen-track / eighty+ minute jammified four-sider. Metamorphosed would have been the perfect third LP to fit in with the other two. Limited edition clear blue vinyl.
Arlo Parks - Collapsed In Sunbeams LP/CD (Transgressive Records)
The debut album from the British singer/songwriter. Twenty-year-old, London-based musician and poet Arlo Parks, has been very steadily climbing the ranks as an artist to watch since the release of her confessional debut single "Cola" in 2018. Arlo has received praise from artists such as Billie Eilish, Wyclef Jean, Clairo, Florence Welsh and Phoebe Bridgers during the past year while growing her fan base exponentially. Arlo's debut album "is a series of vignettes and intimate portraits surrounding my adolescence and the people that shaped it. It is rooted in storytelling and nostalgia - I want it to feel both universal and hyper specific." On a personal level, Parks struggled with her identity growing up; a self- confessed tom-boy who was super sensitive and "uncool," she says it was like "I'm a black kid who can't dance for shit, listens to emo music and currently has a crush on some girl in my Spanish class." By the time she reached 17, she shaved her head, figured out she was bisexual and produced/wrote an album's worth of material. Released by Transgressive records and available here on limited edition deep red color vinyl, yellow mustard colored vinyl, and CD.
Mike Sopko, Bill Laswell & Tyshawn Sorey - On Common Ground CD (M.O.D. Reloaded)
Since the days of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the guitar/bass/drums trio has been convened by visionary tone scientists as a laboratory for music of primal power and tonal subtlety. On Common Ground features three such players. Mike Sopko has explored the frontiers of the guitar with Los Lobos and Dosh, Thomas Pridgen. Laswell, like Sopko a Midwesterner, here transmutes the industrial crash and hum of the region into music of muscular authority. Even followers of the protean career of composer, instrumentalist and conceptualist Tyshawn Sorey might be surprised by the oceans of primal rhythm he conjures here. Together, the sounds brought into being by these 3 improvisors are at once grounded in a deep inquiry of traditions that span space and time while cracking open a window onto eternal radiance.
Surgeons Girl - A Violet Sleep 12" EP (Livity Sound Recordings)
The reflective and immersive extraterrestrial synth explorations of Surgeons Girl's A Violet Sleep EP mark a stunning, dream-like debut for the Bristol based artist. Specializing in live audio-visual performance, combined with a love of analog synths, Surgeons Girl weaves emotive and enveloping sounds from her instruments, drawing on influences from the likes of Suzanne Ciani, Laurel Halo, and Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Livity Sound Recordings is a label set up in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture.
Terry Gross - Soft Opening LP (Thrill Jockey)
Terry Gross is an engrossing trio composed of guitarist Phil Manley (Trans Am), bassist Donny Newenhouse, and drummer Phil Becker. The trio are also connected as owners and engineers at Bay Area recording spot El Studio, where they began improvising together as a way to test the boundaries and gear of the studio. Their loose, organic chemistry burgeoned into a deep camaraderie and a sound both expansive and exacting. The three experienced musicians crafted their first full-length album through the pure joy of playing together with no expectations. With the tapes rolling on their rehearsals, the band captures the exuberance of live performance and elevates those recordings through a deft use of the studio as their collective instrument. On their debut LP Soft Opening, Terry Gross channels their cosmic powers and considerable chops into a gleefully mesmerizing odyssey fit for an arena. Pink vinyl.

Steven Wilson’s sixth studio album. Caesars Palace - Love For The Streets LP (Busy Bee)
The Stockholm-based psych/60s/garage/indie-act Caesars had a wild ride around the turn of the century. Their three first albums, released in Sweden under the moniker Caesars Palace, were riddled with hits like Jerk It Out, Punkrocker, From The Bughouse, Sort It Out and more, but they only had limited release outside Sweden. The ultra limited vinyl versions of the albums have been highly sought after collector items for 20 years now and even if you're lucky enough to own originals, these new editions have superior quality pressings, bonus tracks and better sleeves.
Paul Chambers Quartet - Bass On Top LP (Blue Note)
When jazz bass virtuoso Paul Chambers recorded his 3rd and final album as a Blue Note lead, Bass On Top, he was already well established. Cloud Nothings - Turning On LP (Carpark Records)
It's been 10 years since the release of Turning On, Cloud Nothings' debut album. Singer-songwriter Dylan Baldi was just 18 years old when he began recording the album in his parents' basement in Cleveland, Ohio. Over one winter, Baldi produced an album of taut, lo-fi guitar-pop songs, playing each instrument himself. The band has accomplished a great deal since Turning On, signing to Carpark Records, releasing seven albums, and headlining numerous international tours, yet Turning On still remains the stripped-back core of Cloud Nothings' style: raw and grungy, filled with catchy earworms that are surprisingly pop. First time on vinyl

A masterful collection of songs about zombies, demons, vampires and, yes, even the ‘Creature With The Atom Brain’. These tracks, inspired by schlock sci-fi and horror movies and colored by Roky’s distinctive, high-pitched vocal and squealing guitar, are among the maverick performer’s best.

Thanks to a significant online presence and constant touring, Hiero gained a healthy following among rap fans seeking an alternative to the increasingly commercialized state of the genre.
Mike Krol - Mike Krol Is Never Dead CD (Merge)
Most listeners were introduced to Mike Krol in 2015 with the release of his Merge debut, Turkey. Few knew at the time that Turkey was actually Chapter 3 of the Krol saga, and that he had self-released two records years earlier. To the delight of his new legion of fans, Merge reissued those early albums as the 2017 collection Mike Krol Is Never Dead: The First Two Records. With that release, I Hate Jazz and Trust Fund found new life, and the inclusion of digital-only rarities led to fresh demand for a complete release of Mike Krol Is Never Dead on CD, out January 29, 2021. Self-released on LP in 2011, I Hate Jazz was the opening salvo of World War Krol. Only 500 copies were pressed; they were given away to anyone who showed interest (and many who showed none whatsoever). Including Krol classics like "Fifteen Minutes" and "Like a Star, " the record had long been unavailable. Trust Fund followed in 2013; it's 500 LPs sold out on the ensuing tour, fueling a mini-mania that would elevate it to cult status. The 3-CD edition of Mike Krol Is Never Dead includes the first two albums housed in miniature-sized reproductions of the original album tri-fold wallets, and an additional disc filled with an illuminating selection of outtakes, demos, and B-sides from that era.

Japanese saxophonist, composer, and music producer Yasuaki Shimizu, man behind the electronic ambient fusion classic Kakashi, was in charge for tunes like "Wac-Wack", a neon light funk pop song, full of soft big city eroticism, ultra-slick synth lines and real funkateer explosions. Above all Nadja sings with a sexy chill that somehow could only emerge in the '80s, when the cold war even made pop music real cool.

Various Artists - Pop Ambient 2021 LP (Kompakt)
LP version includes download with full CD track listing. Features Blank Gloss, Yui Onodera, Thore Pfeiffer, and many more. Pop Ambient has always stood for a certain classicism and elegance, a kind of beatless music that's diaphanous and hazy, gossamer and glittering. For twenty-one years, Kompakt co-founder Wolfgang Voigt has curated a series of peerless compilations that repeatedly find refreshing answers to a simple question: What happens when the dancefloor is empty, and everyone's home to drift away? Pop Ambient gets the balance right: visions and soundscapes, long-distance communications and intimate asides, sweetness and light, drama and dreaming, all wrapped up in floral abstractions -- a most beautiful distraction.
