Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Ambrose Akinmusire - Honey from a Winter Stone CD (Nonesuch)
The album, which Ambrose calls a "self-portrait," features improvisational vocalist Kokayi, pianist Sam Harris, Chiquitamagic on synthesizer, drummer Justin Brown, and the Mivos Quartet (violinist Olivia Deprato and Maya Bennardo, violist Victor Lowrie Tafoya, cellist Tyler Borden).
All That Remains - Antifragile CD/LP (Fuga)
All That Remains have built an unbreakable axis between pit-splitting metal and anthemic melodies. This signature balance has defined the platinum-certified band's output since day one. It's why the quintet- Philip Labonte [lead vocals], Jason Richardson [lead guitar], Mike Martin [rhythm guitar], Anthony Barone [drums], and Matt Deis [bass]-have notched multiple Top 10 Active Rock Radio hits, sold out shows worldwide, and generated over half-a-billion streams. For as far as they've come, they've never lost sight of the cold Massachusetts underground where the guys first cut their teeth, preserving the same spirit without compromise. They've weathered the changing tides of a fickle business, unspeakable tragedy, and all manner of conflict only to come out stronger than ever on the other side. This strength surges through their tenth full-length album and first independent offering. [Indie store exclusive electric and sea blue galaxy vinyl.]
Bonnie Prince Billy - Purple Bird CD/LP (No Quarter)
The Purple Bird finds Bonnie "Prince" Billy working with a "producer" for only the second time in his illustrious catalog. This time it's David "Ferg" Ferguson (Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson) who guides the songs backed by "the best band you can get in Nashville right now", country singer John Anderson and Bluegrass legend Tim O'Brien. The Purple Bird is simultaneously like and unlike other BPB records. Many of the songs are a product of multiple composers' voices, making the shape-shifting aspect of the BPB persona more fluid than ever before.
Eddie Chacon - Lay Low LP (Stones Throw)
"Low-key R&B legend" Eddie Chacon returns with Lay Low. Having collaborated with John Carroll Kirby on his last two albums, Eddie Chacon teamed up with Nick Hakim to produce this new collection of songs of loving and letting go.
Cymande - Renascence CD (BMG)
Legendary British band Cymande return in 2025 with their first studio album in many years. A true return to form and jewel in the crown of their iconic discography, Renascence picks up where their 1974 album Promised Heights left off - a spiritual and sonic follow-up, bringing a fresh modern edge to their iconic sound, which remains foundational to early hip-hop and funk scenes in the US and UK. Renascence tells the story of a band that never fully got it's due back in the day; but are back to take the crown by remaining true to themselves - politically aware and spiritually positive with infectious grooves. [Vinyl has shipped and will arrive next week]
Lilly Hiatt - Forever CD/LP (New West)
“Forever was a record that was written and recorded one track at a time with my husband Coley. After scrapping about 20 songs or so I had written the last few years, I wanted to get to the heart of things. I had a great talk with a friend on the phone and she mentioned she just wasn't sure where I'd been. I realized I wasn't really certain of that either. It'd been a foggy few years after 2020, and the pieces seemed to just be starting to be picked up. I had fallen in love, gotten married, had a dog, a house... things I had always dreamed of. But it took my quite some time to accept them as my life. For a bit, I felt like an outsider watching myself stumble though everything, and was constantly critiquing myself, to the point where I could hardly leave the house for a bit. But then I realized my life was passing me by, and the love I was living in required presence to accept. I started to do the little things you have to do to just show up for people: listen, grow, change, write... get outside of my own problems. Time is flying, and I want to be here for it all rather than lost in my thoughts all the time. My love is forever. When I was a kid I used to say to my mom and dad "I love you forever and always" then neurotically changed it to "I love you forever and always and it's true and I mean it"... because I wanted to make sure they knew how much I wasn't messing around! I still feel that way when I say "I love you" to anyone and hope it comes across on this record. Love y'all forever!” —Lilly. [Indie store exclusive translucent green vinyl with signed jacket.]
L.S. Dunes - Violet CD/LP (Fantasy)
L.S. Dunes is a dynamic supergroup formed by members from prominent bands within the punk and alternative rock scenes. The lineup features Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin) on vocals, Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance) on guitar, Travis Stever (Coheed and Cambria) on guitar, Tim Payne (Thursday) on bass, and Tucker Rule (Thursday) on drums. Known for their high-energy performances and unique blend of post-hardcore and punk influences, L.S. Dunes brings together a powerhouse of talent and experience, creating a sound that is both fresh and familiar to fans of their respective bands. [Limited edition violet color vinyl.]
Natalia Lafourcade - De Rodas Las Flores CD/2xLP (Sony Latin)
"De Todas Las Flores" is Natalia's first release of all new original material since her breakthrough 2015 album 'Hasta La Raiz. The result of this search is 'De Todas Las Flores,' a dazzling and deeply sophisticated collection of original songs that feature Natalia's trademark compositional virtues - the unusual melodic turns, the affecting poetry, her lightness of touch - while also revealing a musical maturity that hints at a new step in her career. 'De Todas Las Flores' was inspired by themes of vulnerability, life and death, the feminine, nature, the mystical, love and heartbreak.
The Laughing Chimes - Whispers In the Speech Machine LP (Slumberland)
On their spellbinding sophomore album, "Whispers in the Speech Machine," the young Ohio siblings from The Laughing Chimes fully embrace their Southern Gothic influences, cannily balancing the light of their infectious pop with the shadow of their rust belt environs. While attending an afterschool music program at their local opera house, Evan and his brother Quinn began recording The Laughing Chimes' debut album "In This Town," released in 2020. A string of well-received digital singles and a cassette EP for Slumberland followed, dazzling savvy pop fans with their Paisley Underground-inflected jangle that owes as much to the Flying Nun sound as it does to 80s Athens, GA.
Damon Locks - List of Demands LP (International Anthem)
List of Demands, Damon Locks’s first foray into creating an entire album from spoken and text-based work, finds the Chicago-based musician and educator collecting cultural abstractions and reorganizing them into a firm truth. The album lays out a vision of Black liberation and transmits it outward as a song cycle of bite-sized Nikki Giovanni-meets-MF DOOM-style rhythm experiments.
Maribou State - Hallucinating Love CD/LP (Ninja Tune)
When Maribou State consider the new music they’ve made over the past few years, one word jumps out: togetherness. Chris Davids and Liam Ivory were propelled onto the world’s stage with their 2015 debut album Portraits, followed by 2019’s equally acclaimed Kingdom In Colour, both redefining soulful, downtempo electronica for a new generation. There’d been world tours, dates at majestic venues like Sydney Opera House and a roadblock set at Glastonbury, as well as Artist of the Year accolades and a hugely successful single with Khruangbin (‘Feel Good’). But nothing could have prepared the duo for what happened when they made their third album – the biggest test of their careers yet.
Penny & Sparrow - Lefty CD/2xLP (I Love You)
Lefty is a cross-genre double-album from critically acclaimed indie band Penny & Sparrow. Of the album, they said, "We wanted to record a double album for the challenge of it, and also for the chance to be sonically rangy and eccentric. The idea of offering all sorts of sounds, structures, melodies, and lyrical approaches in 20 songs was creatively exciting to us, so we did it. Lefty is a long collection of both real and made up things. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life vignettes, dream scenarios, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions and at least two love letters. All of them belong together because each one is an extension of us, of the things we love. We are the ties that bind Lefty. "
Ebo Taylor, Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad - Jazz Is Dead LP (Jazz Is Dead)
Jazz is Dead Series 3 features another offering top-shelf analog recording taking listeners on a journey through the funky sounds of Ghana all the way down to the psychedelic soul and samba of Brazil. Produced by label founders Adrian Younge and Ali Saheed Muhammad, the latest release features living legend Ebo Taylor.
They Might Be Giants - My Murdered Remains CD (Idlewild Recordings)
My Murdered Remains includes 16 new tracks drawn from the very best of the Dial-A-Song service and features the instant audience favorite "The Communists Have the Music." It is a natural bookend to I Like Fun that is action-packed and worthy to stand alongside any TMBG album.
Tristen - Zenith 7” (Well Kept Secret)
In 2013, Tristen released CAVES, recorded partly in Nashville by Jeremy Ferguson, part in Omaha with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M Ward) and mixed by synth-pop pioneer Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys). Just like her previous albums, CAVES was named "Best Local Album of 2013" by the Nashville Scene Critic's Poll and in the "Top 50 Albums of 2013" by American Songwriter. SPIN Magazine claimed that the new sound of CAVES had recast the songwriter as "a synth pop siren". Since then, Tristen and her "knack for penning an infectious hook" (Entertainment Weekly) has collaborated with artists like Vanessa Carlton (she co-wrote Carlton's latest album Love is an Art) and Jenny Lewis (playing in the Voyager touring band), and opened to critical acclaim for artists ranging from Robyn Hitchcock to Television. CAVES was where Tristen started to establish herself as the prolific and introspective musician you know and love today. But, there's more to this story. You see, three tracks remain from this "synth pop siren". There's two songs you've never heard plus an extended remix of a single you've surely loved. Put that together and you've got ZENITH.
The Weeknd - Hurry Up Tomorrow CD/LP (Xo Records)
Hurry Up Tomorrow is the sixth studio album by the Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd. It is the final part of an album trilogy that began with After Hours (2020) and continued with Dawn FM (2022). The Weeknd announced the new album saying "This album represents the creative apex of the project, serving as the third and final chapter crafted with existential and self-referential themes as seen with the latest visionary teasers that have set fans ablaze with anticipation for this concluding installment."

Big Thief - Capacity CD/LP (4AD)
The trails that Brooklyn's Big Thief - Adrianne Lenker (guitar, vocals), Buck Meek (guitar), Max Oleartchik (bass), and James Krivchenia (drums) - take us down on 2017's Capacity, the band's highly critically acclaimed sophomore album, are overgrown with the wilderness of pumping souls. After 2016's stunning Masterpiece, Capacity was recorded in a snowy winter nest in upstate New York at Outlier Studio with producer Andrew Sarlo. The album jumps right into lives marked up and nipped in surprisingly swift fashion. They are peopled and unpeopled, spooked and soothed, regenerating back into a state where they can once again be vulnerable. The album is thick with raw, un-doctored beauty: most of the songs on Capacity were played for the rest time in the studio and were recorded the same day. "There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album," Lenker explains. "The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a reaction from inside the pain, whereas I feel Capacity examines the pain from the outside." [Eco-recycled vinyl.]
Coolio - Greatest Hits LP (Tommy Boy)
Artist Leon Ivey Jr., better known as Coolio, was one of the most influential rappers of the 90s. With his slick flow, witty wordplay, and ability to tell stories in his music, he is often credited for changing the course of hip hop by bringing it to a wider audience. Arguably his best-known track, the 11 x platinum single "Gangsta's Paradise" reached No. 1 in 14 countries and won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. In addition to "Gangsta's Paradise," this 10-track greatest hits collection also includes the hip hop classics "Fantastic Voyage," "C U When U Get There," and "Rollin' with My Homies" from the Clueless soundtrack. [Limited edition yellow vinyl.]
Toumani Diabate - Kaira CD/LP (Chrysalis)
First released in 1988, Kaira was the debut album by Toumani Diabaté, master player of the kora - the West African harp with 21 strings. Kaira remains one of the most important and influential kora albums of all time. It was the first international release to feature a solo kora without voice. The album turned Toumani into a star overnight, whilst also establishing the kora's reputation as one of Africa's most captivating and versatile indigenous instruments. Kaira is now reissued on vinyl for the first time, as part of Chrysalis Records' acclaimed series of reissues of the music of Toumani Diabaté. Remastered from the production masters by Phil Kinrade, and cut by Jasper Ward, at AIR Mastering. Pressed on 180g vinyl and housed in a poly-lined inner sleeve. The album is accompanied by a 12" x 12" double-sided insert with new sleeve notes and previously unseen photographs by co-producer Lucy Durán.
Dio - The Very Beast of Dio Vol. 2 CD/LP (BMG)
Originally released in 2012, The Very Beast of Dio, Vol. 2 is the follow-up compilation to The Very Best of Dio released in 2000, which included tracks from Dio's first six albums and live EP. Picking up where the previous album left off, Vol. 2 includes tracks from the band's seventh to tenth albums, released between 1996-2002. 2 LP set pressed on "Dragon's Fire" color vinyl.
eLZhi - Elmatic LP (Colemine)
New reissue of eLZhi's 2011 mixtape masterpiece Elmatic. Originally released as a free mixtape in 2011, the album would make eLZhi a beloved figure in the underground blog rap scene then taking shape, establishing him as one of the brightest spots in a then-exploding Detroit rap scene.
The Gits - Frenching the Bully CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Mia Zapata was the greatest rock singer of her time. She may well have been the greatest blues singer in punk rock history, the woman who married the 78 and the '78. Tragedy did not make this true. Mia Zapata made this true, and the ferocious, spring-loaded shrapnel frame that was built around her by Andy Kessler (guitar: metronomic and furious), Matt Dresdner (bass: fluid, punching, beat-addicted and melodic), and Steve Moriarty (drums: martial and explosive) - who, with Mia, combined to form The Gits - made it true. The Gits put out three EPs in 1990 and '91 before signing with C/Z Records and releasing their first full-length album, Frenching the Bully. Seattle quickly claimed the quartet as their own and embraced the Gits blend of ferocious fangs and soft heart, the slug/slap of the guitars, and the gorgeous, soft underbelly of the poetic emotions.
Eddie Hazel - Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs LP (Rhino Reserve)
Eddie Hazel’s DAMES, GAMES AND GUITAR THANGS (1977) is a must-have for funk rock fans, showcasing Hazel’s iconic guitar work and smooth vocals. Known for his groundbreaking role in Parliament-Funkadelic, Hazel delivers standout tracks like "California Dreamin’" that blend funky grooves with a rock edge. This album is a hidden gem that captures Hazel's innovative spirit and is perfect for collectors and enthusiasts.
Don Hunerberg & Peter Gillespie - Phase Murmur LP (Modern Harmonic)
Self-released avant garde jazz – reissued for the first time! Recalling Kraftwerk precursor the Organisation, or contemporaries like Faust, Hünerberg employs flute, organ, bass and balloon to his DIY compositions. Over top of Gillespie's nimble, pointillist drumming (he also plays piano and harpsichord), Hünerberg employs flute, organ, bass and balloon (that’s not a saxophone on “Cucumber”). The disorienting opener “Cro Magnon/Two” recalls Kraftwerk precursor the Organisation, or contemporaries like Faust. There’s a strange, disconsolate atmosphere to the proceedings, almost as if the air had been sucked out of a recording session booked for some avant-garde jazz heavies. Instead of Impulse, Phase Murmur should have been bound for ESP-Disk. Alas, the duo were experimenting out in the relative vacuum of southwestern Ohio. Far from any bustling metropolis or curious record labels, Phase Murmur was truly a DIY affair.
Ice (aka Lafayette Afro Rock Band) - Each Man Makes His Destiny LP (Strut)
Strut proudly reintroduces a classic from the Topomic catalogue, Ice's 'Each Man Makes His Destiny', officially available on vinyl for the first time. First-Ever official vinyl release. Predecessor to Lafayette Afro Rock Band: Recorded before they adopted the Lafayette Afro Rock Band name, this album marks the origins of their iconic afro- funk sound. Remastered by The Carvery.
The Impressions - Ridin’ High LP (Elemental Music)
Ridin' High was first released in 1966, a period in which The Impressions were dominating the charts and recording fantastic albums. All songs were written by Curtis Mayfield, who sings lead vocals and plays guitar along with tenor vocals by Fred Cash and bass vocals by Sam Gooden.
The Lemonheads - Car Button Cloth 2xLP (Fire Records)
Car Button Cloth was the band’s seventh studio album, and their last with Atlantic Records. Following the success of previous albums, 1992’s It’s A Shame About Ray and 1993’s Come on Feel The Lemonheads, Car Button Cloth saw a shift to a darker sound, one more reflective lead singer Evan Dando’s struggles in this period. Whilst much of the power-pop that saw the band garner that initial success is still present, there is a noticeable shift in Dando’s songwriting, particularly on tracks such as ‘Losing My Mind’ and ‘One More Time’. The album would be the band’s last studio album for almost ten years and has gained something of a cult following in the years since its initial release. [Indie exclusive expanded clothbound edition on yellow vinyl.]
Madvillain - Madvillainy Demos LP (Stones Throw)
In 2002, before Madlib and MF DOOM finished Madvillainy, the first demo sequence of the album leaked online – early vocal cuts from DOOM, recorded then quickly mixed in LA at Madlib’s Bomb Shelter studio. The leak spread around the world, and while the tracks may have been unfinished, it was clear that this was a hip-hop album unlike any other. Stones Throw Records celebrates the 20th anniversary of Madvillainy by releasing the Demos on vinyl for the first time, mastered by Dave Cooley, and with a new cover photo and insert of photographer Eric Coleman's contact sheets from the original album shoot. Vinyl mastering by Phil Rodriguez.
Porter Robinson - Worlds 2xLP (Astralwerks)
Porter Robinson’s debut studio album, Worlds, took the electronic music landscape by storm in 2014. Inspired by themes of fantasy, escapism, fiction, and nostalgia, Worlds continues to transport listeners to new realms a decade later. Worlds (10th Anniversary Edition) comes with holographic cover art and a brand-new bonus song, "Hollowheart (ft. Amy Millan)," originally recorded during the Worlds sessions but never released until now. Enjoy and escape with this electronic classic ten years later.

Steely Dan - Katy Lied LP (Geffen)
Led by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, Steely Dan released 7 albums from 1972-1980. The vinyl series continues with Katy Lied, the band's 1975's album featuring "Black Friday," "Bad Sneakers" and "Doctor Wu," and the addition of Michael McDonald on vocals.
Allen Toussaint - Southern Nights LP (Rhino Reserve)
Originally released in 1975, Allen Toussaint's SOUTHERN NIGHTS is a celebrated album showcasing his signature blend of funk, soul, and R&B. The title track later reached No.1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles by Glen Campbell and made its way to the Louisiana state song list. The album also features standout tracks like "Last Train" and "Worldwide," highlighting Toussaint's innovative style. Notably, Toussaint's use of rich, orchestral arrangements on this album contributed to its critical acclaim and lasting influence.
Various Artists - Eccentric Soul: The Cobra Label 2xLP (Numero)
Venomous Tex-Mex R&B and early rock n' roll from San Antonio's West Side scene. From 1961-67, Bexar county kingmaker Abe Epstein cut every teen combo to grace the Patio Andaluz stage, launching the careers of Doug Sahm, The Royal Jesters, Sonny Ace, The Dreamliners, and hundreds more throughout the decade. Spread across two luxurious slabs of vinyl, The Cobra Label compiles 28 neurotoxic sides from Epstein's first bite in the biz.
