Beartooth – The Surface CD/LP (Red Bull)
“Beartooth’s entire discography has been snapshots of my inner monologue and emotional state over the years with a recurring theme, depression, and self-loathing. It’s been tough to understand why I’ve felt the way I do for so long. This album is the story of my beginnings in the new world I’ve created for myself. One focused on health, self-love, positivity, understanding, hard work, and most of all second chances. At the end of the day, life is short for all of us. We can’t escape the end, so why not make friends with it, and live in a world focused on living a personally fulfilling life.” – Caleb Shomo of Beartooth [Indie store exclusive clear w/ red, white & blue splatter vinyl.]

Creeper – Sanguivore LP (Spinefarm)
For Sanguivore, Creeper made a blood pact to give full rein to the things that define them, taking a torch to the more dimly lit recesses of frontman Will Gould's ever-fertile mind. The result is 40 plus minutes combining the grandiose and epic with the punk rock spirit that has been a cornerstone of their sound: a ripped leather jacket wrapped in a plush velvet cloak - a cloak lined in red satin, of course. Sanguivore is a hugely ambitious, loosely conceptual journey through the glorious and the graphic. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]

Maple Glider – I Get Into Trouble LP (Pie Eater)
For Tori Zietsch, who records under the moniker Maple Glider, music has been an escape from a series of oppressive institutions: religion, enervating relationships, her own brain. On I Get Into Trouble, she embraces the opportunity to be plainly and painfully honest. The album is a thematic expansion of her debut, going into greater and clearer detail, as she delves back into her Christian childhood while deconstructing her relationship to her body and her sexuality, alongside concepts of consent and shame. Throughout the songs, she draws similar parallels between religion and sexuality in novelistic detail, before landing on a note of hopeful optimism, and embracing a new life of peacefulness. She deftly combines the infectious folk-pop hooks of her debut with a sense of scale and scope. It’s tight in all the right places, free form, wily and compositionally eclectic, playful, and erratic in others. [Limited-edition pink vinyl.]

She played many of the instruments herself, with additional contributions from drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), guitarists Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen) + Jake Lenderman (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), and bassist Dave Hartley (The War On Drugs). It's lush and grand - arguably the best thing Williams has ever done. Morella’s Forest – Morella’s Forest LP (Lost In Ohio)
Morella's Forest was a different band in 1996. After writing and recording their debut the year before (the fuzzed-out shoegaze classic Super Deluxe), MoFo hit the road, touring with Starflyer 59, and playing the summer festival circuit. They returned home to Dayton tighter than ever and with a distinct musical identity, reflected in the eleven songs that would become their sophomore release Ultraphonic Hiss. The band headed to Chicago's Playground Studio to record with Keith Cleversley (known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and HUM), whose influence can be heard clearly. Gone are the extended bouts of feedback and layers of distorted guitar, traded instead for a collection of '90s indie pop gems, wrapped in dreamy guitar reverberations and topped with Sydney's lilting vocals. The music press took note of Morella's Forest's refined sound (and candy-themed song titles), with College Music Journal calling the album "awfully hard to resist" while Dayton Voice was hypnotized.
