Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Tré Burt – Traffic Fiction CD/LP (Oh Boy)
“Grief can serve as a reason for reflection and a spur for reinvention. After the death of his grandfather, singer-songwriter Tré Burt decided to honor his memory, as well as times shared with his father, by deviating from his more folky style and head back toward his first love – classic soul. Burt’s new album, Traffic Fiction, still trades in Burt’s favorite topics – doomed relationships, financial oppression, and social apathy – while hewing closer to the old-school sounds he fell in love with while listening to music with his music-loving role models.” – Andrew Guiden, American Highways [Indie store exclusive red with black marble vinyl.]
Butcher Brown – Solar Music CD/2xLP (Concord)
The Richmond, VA band Butcher Brown’s new album Solar Music explores a blend of genres, including jazz, hip-hop and R&B/soul. Following the release of Butcher Brown Presents Triple Trey and #KingButch, this forward-thinking band shares 17-tracks (with three additional single edits on digital) and includes featured guests: Pink Siifu, Braxton Cook, Jay Prince, Nappy Nina, Keyon Harrold, Michael Millions, Charlie Hunter and more.
Carnifex – Necromanteum CD/LP (Nuclear Blast)
Necromanteum is a musical journey through the darkness to speak with death itself. With it's blast beats, blackened riffage, heavy breakdowns and epic orchestral arrangements, it's a visceral experience that only Carnifex can deliver. [Limited-edition green & purple splatter vinyl.]
Carrtoons – Saturday Night CD (Wichita)
Soul and R&B New York-based producer Ben Carr returns as Carrtoon with his newest release, Saturday Night, his latest album, and follow-up to his debut album, Homegrown. “Described as an ode to joy, the 14-track project which features previous single ‘Grace (ft. Rae Khalil)’, takes comfort in the little moments of happiness that come from something as simple as spending time with your loved ones and watching one of your favorite movies. It’s also a celebration of New York’s thriving creative scene, and the friends Carr has made in the city, many of whom feature on the record including Jay Prince, Haile Supreme, Bad Snacks and Topaz Jones.” – Cailean Coffey, The Line Of Best Fit
Citizen – Calling The Dogs CD/LP (Run For Cover)
With the ability to excel in both quiet ballads and distorted rock anthems, Citizen (which recently expanded to a full quintet with the addition of former touring members drummer Ben Russin and guitarist Mason Mercer) has an incredible knack for channeling raw emotion and energy into singalong songs. On Calling The Dogs, the band exemplifies passionate songwriting and styling while stripping back to what they do best: guitar-driven rock ‘n’ roll. Picking up labels ranging from post-hardcore to shoegaze over the years, it’s reductive to try to categorize Citizen as anything other than one of the best rock bands around today. [Limited-edition brown vinyl.]
Dogstar – Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees CD/LP (Dillon Street)
In a revival that echoes the spirit of Southern California's storytelling rock scene, Dogstar has risen from the ashes with Somewhere Between The Power Lines And Palm Trees, embodying the essence of the quintessential SoCal band they've always aspired to be. Comprised of guitarist/vocalist Bret Domrose, drummer Robert Mailhouse, and a bass player you may have heard of named Keanu Reeves, Dogstar is back with a creative resurgence nearly a quarter-century after their last album, 2000’s Happy Ending. In the shadows of power lines and among the palm trees, Dogstar finds its groove once again, proving that some stories are meant to be continued, and their music is designed to reverberate through the canyons of Southern California and beyond. [An indie store exclusive green color vinyl pressing is available for special order.]
Spencer Doran – Season: A Letter To The Future (Original Soundtrack) 2xLP (RVNG Int’l)
Composed and produced over the course of nearly three years, Spencer Doran's original soundtrack for Season: A Letter To The Future underpins the highly anticipated atmospheric adventure game in which the main character must save memories of a civilization on the verge of collapse. A lush collection of transmissions from this warmly fading world, we hear a culture and ecology through the sentimental ear of their last witness.
Dorian Electra – Fanfare CD/LP (Dorian Electra)
Fanfare is the third album from ultimate pop futurist Dorian Electra. A singular exploration of modern culture and the cult of celebrity, Fanfare reflects our obsession with fame back at itself, deconstructing and rebuilding it into something new.
Grrrl Gang – Spunky LP (Kill Rock Stars)
Hailing from the cultural city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Grrrl Gang is a rising force in the independent music scene with their infectious melodies, anthemic songs, and electrifying live performances. The power trio, composed of Angee Sentana on guitar and vocals, Akbar Rumandung on bass, and Edo Alventa on guitar, has been making waves in the Southeast Asian music scene since their formation in 2016. Grrrl Gang's music is a celebration of their collective roots and a testament to the power of pop music to connect people across cultures and borders. [CD version due October 20.]
Laurel Halo - Atlas LP (Awe)
Using both electronic and acoustic instrumentation, Halo has created a potent set of sensual ambient jazz collages, composed of orchestral clouds, shades of modal harmony, hidden sonic details, and detuned, hallucinatory textures. The music functions as a series of maps, for places real and imaginary, and for expressing the unsaid. The process of writing Atlas began when Halo reacquainted herself with the piano, relishing the instrument's physical feedback as well as its capacity to express emotion and lightness. Halo also recorded additional guitar, violin and vibraphone, as well as acoustic instrumentation from friends and collaborators including saxophonist Bendik Giske, violinist James Underwood, cellist Lucy Railton, and vocalist Coby Sey. All of these sounds were shaped, melted, and re-composed into the arrangements, their acoustic origins rendered uncanny. In short, Atlas is road trip music for the subconscious.
Jason Hawk Harris – Thin Places LP (Bloodshot)
Pink vinyl. In Celtic folklore, places in this world where the veil between Heaven and Earth is permeable are known as "thin places." And if you're open to something greater than yourself, a thin place comes to you. Jason Hawk Harris knows; he's been living in one for the last five years. Written from start to finish as one continuous artistic statement, the set draws on Harris' extensive background in classical music to create a work of beauty, pain, and catharsis. Blurring the lines between country, gospel, soul, and chamber folk, the songs that comprise Thin Places are deeply personal, staring down loss, self-destruction, and recovery with unflinching honesty.
Ilsey – From The Valley CD/LP (Elektra)
From The Valley is the debut album by singer/songwriter Ilsey. Features "No California" and "Heart of Gold" featuring Bon Iver.

The Sarajevo-based singer and guitar player has dedicated his career to performing the music of his homeland and sharing its rich, enchanting melodies and stories with audiences worldwide and educating listeners on its vibrant history.
Krasno/Moore Project – Book Of Queens CD/LP (Concord)
Guitarist Eric Krasno (Lettuce, Soulive) and drummer Stanton Moore (Galactic, Garage-a-Trois) are Grammy award-winning artists who have shared the stage countless times over years. Their album House Of Queens showcases a collection of songs from some of their favorite female artists including Amy Winehouse, Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Nina Simone and more. Featuring organist Eric Finland with special guests Cory Henry, Branford Marsalis, and Robert Randolph.
Mary Lattimore – Goodbye, Hotel Arkada CD/LP (Ghostly Int’l)
"And Then He Wrapped His Wings Around Me", Lattimore looks to two of her closest friends - songwriter Meg Baird, her collaborator on 2018's Ghost Forests, and accordionist composer Walt McClements, who she's toured and performed alongside - to surface a core memory. As a kid, Lattimore won a drawing contest through a country radio station and got to see Sesame Street Live! in Asheville. She and her mom were invited backstage, and there the benevolent icon Big Bird "gave me an incredible hug with his scratchy yellow wings." The trio channel the enveloping warmth of that portrait, the feeling of innocent escape, flying away towards a childhood dream that is just out of reach, surreal, and tinged with sadness. In a rare vocal passage in Lattimore's library, Baird softly hums with the rolling washes of harp above McClements' tranquil drone; just for a moment, we are held in a sublime canary yellow embrace. [Limited edition ‘inkwell’ color vinyl.]
Reba McEntire – Not That Fancy CD/2xLP (Rockin’ R)
Reba McEntire releases her companion album to her upcoming book, Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons On Living, Loving, Eating, And Dusting Off Your Boots. All songs are stripped down/acoustic versions of some of her biggest hits and were produced by Grammy-winning producer, Dave Cobb. Not That Fancy includes three new classic stripped down/acoustic songs that have never been released and the brand-new song, "Seven Minutes In Heaven".
Meernaa – So Far So Good CD/LP (Keeled Scales)
Meernaa's So Far So Good travels perfectly with a glistening night out or a drive to a secret hideaway. It exists somewhere between R&B, jazz, psychedelic rock, art rock, and pop. As a genre-less artist, it mirrors her constant struggle to balance a vibrant day to day of falling in and out of love, writing and recording music at her studio and the intensity in the back of her mind - her familial struggles concerning death, drugs, and instability. [Limited-edition translucent ‘cloudy clear’ vinyl.]
John R. Miller – Heat Comes Down CD/LP (Rounder)
John R. Miller’s Heat Comes Down finds him teaming up with producers Andrija Tokic and John James Tourville (Alabama Shakes and Sunny War). With its understated but gorgeously detailed convergence of country and folk-rock, Heat Comes Down hits with a potent impact despite its exquisite intricacy. Miller says, "My hope is that there’s some universality in there, and that people find comfort in knowing that someone else feels the same way they do.”
Minor Science - Absent Friends Vol. III LP (Balmat)
On his Balmat debut, Minor Science pushes forward his vision of ambient music as neither static vista or merely mood-setting atmosphere, but rather a dynamic matrix of textures, sensations, and even rhythms. While developing his live set, and armed with hundreds of bespoke stems created in his studio -- idiosyncratic FX chains, feedback loops through cheap rack gear, heavily post-processed field recordings, found voices, etc. -- Finlayson would improvise on four CDJs, mixer, FX, and live synths, extending techniques he learned as a club DJ into a live context. Finlayson's organic process of ideation and realization might help explain the unusual coherence of the album, in which sounds and textures flow seamlessly from one to the next, sometimes seeming to stand still, and sometimes looping back.
NCT 127 – 5th Album ‘Fact Check’ CD (Virgin Music)
NCT 127's fifth full-length album 'Fact Check' consists total of nine songs, including the single “Fact Check (Mysterious)” of the same name, a rhythmical dance song based on an intense main synth loop. It expresses NCT 127's confidence that they wouldn't “fear to 'fact-check' to compare themselves with artworks forever valuable.” [An indie store exclusive CD version is available.]
Old Dominion – Memory Lane CD (SME Nashville)
New release from the award-winning country band. Memory Lane is the follow-up to their 2021 album Time, Tequila & Therapy.
Oneohtrix Point Never – Again CD/2xLP+MP3 (Warp)
Daniel Lopatin has long been a mercurial figure in many music worlds: from vaporific eccojams to the leftfield pop of Ford & Lopatin, and the eclectic and esoteric influences of his output as Oneohtrix Point Never. 2020's Magic Oneohtrix Point Never distilled all these styles into a radio-themed retrospective, but it's his latest album Again that truly represents the incredible OPN sound, exploding and examining it at its raw, pure core. Like the alluringly visceral artwork made by artist Matias Faldbakken, Lopatin clenches and crushes sound firmly in his fist, then outstretches it in his palm as he details life condensed into a nonlinear slipstream. Again, is a glorious return to abstraction informed by Daniel Lopatin's popstar detours, a thrilling joyride we'll be wrapping our brains around for a while yet. [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]
Passarani presents David Woods - Shuffling the Cards Again LP (Running Back)
The musical cosmos is set to bestow upon us a celestial gem that shall set dancefloors ablaze and hearts aflutter. It is none other than the enigmatic Marco Passarani aka David Woods of Tiger & Woods, the sonic alchemist who has been tantalizing senses with his kaleidoscopic grooves. Imagine, if you will, a voyage through a wormhole that transcends time and space, landing you smack dab in the midst of a euphoric dancefloor utopia. David Woods has summoned their sonic forces to curate a soundscape that defies convention, much like a comet hurtling through the night sky, leaving trails of sonic stardust in its wake!
Claire Rosinkranz – Just Because CD/LP (Republic)
Debut album from the singer/songwriter. Together, all 13 tracks that comprise Just Because narrate a year in Claire's life, revealing a unique duality of teenage normalcy written by a burgeoning pop icon. In between sold-out headline tours and festival main stages, California-native and MTV VMA Award-winning singer-songwriter Claire Rosinkranz is a regular 19-year-old who loves beach days with friends, off-roading, sushi nights, road trips, and giant bowls of pasta.
Mitch Rowland – Come June CD/LP (Erskine/Giant)
Mitch Rowland, a singer-songwriter, discovered his passion for guitar music as a young child, inspired by the enchanting sounds of a vintage jukebox. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, he immersed himself in bands like The Black Crowes and Aerosmith, learning to play drums and guitar on his own. After moving to Los Angeles in 2013, he found a breakthrough opportunity as a collaborator with Harry Styles, contributing to major hits like "Watermelon Sugar" and "Golden". Now Mitch releases his introspective folk album, Come June, which showcases his unique sound and influences, drawing from a lifetime of musical exploration. [Indie store exclusive gold vinyl.]
Alanna Royale – Trouble Is LP (Soul Step)
White vinyl. For fans of Amy Winehouse, Lady Wray, and The Monophonics, Trouble Is is steeped in the sounds of the incredible R&B artists that have came before her.
RRUCCULLA - Zeru Freq. LP (Lapsus Records)
Composer, percussionist and multidisciplinary artist RRUCCULLA is undoubtedly one of the most eclectic projects to emerge from Spain in recent times, combining abstraction, plasticity and experimentation with an uncommon mastery. Zeru Freq. envelops us in a Euskadi environment, guiding us through an open-air museum, containing a collection of eleven sound productions that fuse nature, landscapes and the local climate. This epic musical journey incorporates organic frequencies painted in technicolor, in which hyper-realistic synthesizer textures merge with acoustic instruments, resulting in an atmospheric ambient sound that warps our perceptions of reality. Throughout its eleven tracks, RRUCCULLA embraces the broadest spectrum of contemporary music, flirting with avantgarde electronica at will, without succumbing to labels or pigeonholing.
Darius Rucker – Carolyn’s Boy LP (Capitol Nashville)
Darius Rucker's sixth country studio album, Carolyn's Boy, features 14 songs including the #1 hit "Beers And Sunshine" and his latest single "Fire Don't Start Themselves". The album title is named after his mother. Rucker embarked on a successful solo career, applying his versatile baritone to acclaimed R&B and country efforts like the platinum-selling Learn To Live (2008) and True Believers (2013).
A. Savage – Several Songs About Fire CD/LP (Rough Trade)
“I imagine myself playing these songs in a small club that is slowly burning,” says A. Savage of his second solo record, Several Songs About Fire. After more than a decade in New York, the co-frontman of Parquet Courts has left the city, marking his exit with a masterpiece of maturity and a worthy corollary to his first solo venture, 2017’s Thawing Dawn. “Fire is something you must escape from. This album is a burning building, and these songs are things I’d leave behind to save myself.” [Indie store exclusive purple vinyl.]
Arian Shafiee - Engines in Unity LP (Vin du Select Qualitite)
A main architect of one of the most exciting and innovative groups of the last decade, Guerilla Toss, Arian Shafiee has recorded for labels as varied and iconic as Sub Pop, DFA, and Tzadik. Engines In Unity is the brilliant follow-up to his 2018 VDSQ debut solo album, A Scarlet Fail. Vivid and often destroyed, the pieces on Engines In Unity pan between chamber arrangements and more inherently guitar oriented songs, drawing from his love of classical, ECM jazz, "slowed + reverb" culture and new age. In the artist's usual fashion, he crafts fleeting music that escapes categorization, with every vignette showcasing a new elusive sound source (most of which are processed acoustic or electric guitars). Through hyper detailed production, Engines In Unity takes you into massive physical spaces, all the while feeling simultaneously epic and understated.
The Steel Woods – On Your Time CD/LP (Woods Music)
The Steel Woods, the renowned Southern rock band, have captivated audiences with their powerful sound and heartfelt lyrics over their past three albums. With their fourth album, On Your Time, they embark on a poignant and emotional journey loosely following the trajectory of Uncle Lloyd, a charming but dissolute character first introduced on the Woods' debut album, 2017’s “Straw in the Wind.” This ambitious album not only showcases their musical evolution and episodic storytelling abilities but also serves as a tribute to the vision and legacy of their late co-founder, Jason "Rowdy" Cope, who passed away just before the release of their third album, All Of Your Stones. Led by Wes Bayliss, the band’s guitarist, lead vocalist and co-founder, The Steel Woods have poured their heart and soul into this album, creating a record that reflects their resilience, growth, and unwavering spirit.
Sufjan Stevens – Javelin CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)
Over the course of his career, Sufjan Stevens has blurred distinctions between the major and the minor, between the details that color our existence and the big events that frame our lives. He has turned historical footnotes of States into kaleidoscopic pop and rendered the immeasurable grief of loss with intimacy and grace. His new album Javelin starts intimately: the trickle of an acoustic guitar, the patter of a lidded piano, and the cascade of a coruscant arpeggio. And then, of course, there is that disarming voice, the throughline in one of the most eclectic catalogs of any songwriter this century - soft but strong, as if the very scenes of hurt and hope it is about to share have only galvanized it through the decades. Javelin pairs musical sweep with emotional breadth, an entire lifetime of feeling woven into 42-minutes. On Javelin, Sufjan again offers gorgeous if pained glimpses of himself, so that we may see ourselves more fully. [Indie store exclusive lemonade yellow vinyl.]
Tele Novella – Poet’s Tooth CD/LP (Kill Rock Stars)
As Tele Novella, Chronis (who performs in the beloved and rekindled indie pop band Voxtrot) and Ribbons (who previously performed in the long-running “Victorian punk” project Agent Ribbons) have spent their past two albums creating "medieval outsider country" on 2016’s House Of Souls and 2021’s Merlynn Belle. Poet’s Tooth steers the duo’s whimsical western-tinted quality into fascinating new directions: cinematic-pop balladry on the autoharp-tinged opener “Young & Free”, gently clip-clopping Americana-folk on “Hard-Hearted Way,” and bass-driven funk on the wry “Eggs In One Basket”. With help from producer Danny Reisch, Tele Novella has crafted a genre-rich, poetic, and sincere album. [Limited-edition pink vinyl.]
Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux CD/2xLP (Cooking Vinyl)
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary year of The Dark Side Of The Moon, Roger Waters releases his homage to the original. Of The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, Waters shared “when we recorded the stripped down songs for the Lockdown Sessions, the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon was looming on the horizon. It occurred to me that The Dark Side Of The Moon could well be a suitable candidate for a similar re-working, partly as a tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album… And it is a way for me to honor a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave and I have every right to be very proud of.” [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl is shipping late and should arrive next week.]
Teddy Swims – I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) CD/LP/Cassette (WB)

Vanishing Twin – Afternoon X LP+MP3 (Fire)
Vanishing Twin further their exploration of decidedly experimental territories with Afternoon X. Crafted with a playful balance of humor and rigor, with each member embracing the role of the multi-instrumentalist and process, over outcome. Following a series of line-up changes, Vanishing Twin is now the tightly honed collective of singer and multi-instrumentalist Cathy Lucas, drummer Valentina Magaletti (Holy Tongue, Tomaga, Moin) and bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin). Harnessing the diverse touchstones of its members; Lucas' left-field song-craft, Magaletti's singular approaches to experimental percussion, and Mukai's long history in the production of electronic music, the band has refined a hypnotic sound at the juncture of minimalism, kosmische, post-punk, and dream-laden, psychedelic pop.

Heatmiser – The Music Of Heatmiser CD/2xLP (Third Man)
Neil Gust and Elliott Smith arrived in Portland, OR together in the summer of 1991 to start a new band with drummer/producer Tony Lash. Six of these tracks were self-released on the cassette titled The Music of Heatmiser which was sold at shows, local record shops, and handed out to record labels. The sound of the band changed a lot over three LPs, but this is Heatmiser right out of the gate. New, energetic, excited, moving quickly through styles, totally broke and making it work in whatever way possible. It’s guitar rock, full blast, through 100-watt Marshall half stacks, when grunge was ascendant in the Pacific Northwest and the Portland scene was exploding. Fast, tight, loud, fun. Jackie McLean – Demon’s Dance [Reissue/1970] LP (Blue Note)
Blue Note Tone Poet Series vinyl reissue. Jackie McLean's music weaved in and out of the avant-garde throughout the 1960s with the brilliant 1963 inside-out dates One Step Beyond and Destination... Out!, eventually leading to full-throated free jazz of the 1967 dates New And Old Gospel (featuring Ornette Coleman on trumpet) and 'Bout Soul. Meat Puppets – Up On The Sun [Reissue/1985] CD/LP (Megaforce)
On their second album, Meat Puppets II, the Meat Puppets staggered away from the attempts at punk formalism that hobbled their debut, and with their third LP, 1985's Up On The Sun, they well and truly came out of the musical closet — not only weren't they punks, but they could also easily pass for hippies and didn't feel the least bit self-conscious about it.

Mac Miller – NPR Music – Tiny Desk Concert LP (WB)
Multiple new colorways – including indie store exclusive variants. Mac Miller's Swimming marked a pivotal point in the late artist's career. His devotion to constant sonic exploration and artistic reinvention had already been well-documented prior to the album's release - the quantum leap from his Billboard chart-topping debut Blue Slide Park to his sophomore album Watching Movies With The Sound Off, his tour de force as a producer on his 2014 mixtape Faces and ability to direct a full band on 2016's The Divine Feminine were evidence of his steadfast commitment to growth in his craft. Yet upon its release, Swimming was immediately understood by both his fans and critics alike as the high-water mark of his career: an album that perfectly showcased the musical chops he had developed vocally and instrumentally over the course of a decade. This understanding was reinforced when, just three days after the album's release, NPR Music published a Tiny Desk Concert of Miller and band performing live.

Little-known during his lifetime, recognition has begun to grow in recent decades for Nichols' incredibly hip, angular compositions, each of which were miniature marvels built with their own sturdy inner logic.

The Shadow Ring – Put The Music In Its Coffin [Reissue/1994] LP (Blank Forms)
Recorded and self-released by The Shadow Ring's own Dry Leaf Discs in 1993, City Lights is the debut record of the then duo Graham Lambkin and Darren Harris-an assured arrival statement teeming with stripling angst and ambition. On a recently acquired secondhand guitar, Lambkin plays repetitive, brooding licks that form the record's backbone, weaving in and out of sync with Harris's free-form percussion and the pair's sing-song poetry. The group's sophomore record Put The Music In Its Coffin is a more sinister, saturnine affair than City Lights.

" Rap, sampling, psychedelia, new and no-wave, funk and punk are routinely swallowed up and mixed with a myriad of Brazilian styles—the swing of samba, the pounding massed drums of Bloco Afro, the dance grooves of axé. The result is so transcendent, so full of life, that it counters the negativity of all the shit that’s going down, to paraphrase the Isleys. The music fights the power.” - David Byrne
Various Artists - Spiritual Jazz 14: Private CD/2LP (Jazzman Records)
While the string of legendary independent labels, from Blue Note and Prestige to Steeplechase and Impulse! loom large in the Spiritual Jazz catalog, Jazzman's latest installment concerns the brave and innovative souls who acted "privately," recording and releasing their music without the aid or involvement of a bona fide record company. Here, Jazzman examines a variety of tracks from a selection of privately pressed jazz records, released in the US between 1964 and 1987. One of the most interesting things about this album is the variety of reasons behind coming up with a self-released record. No two stories are the same; some were done purely out of altruism to further the musical direction of students, others were simply trying to make it big, albeit on their own terms. But all of these artists believed in their art so much that they took whatever steps they had available to them at the time to get their music heard exactly as they wanted it to be heard. Featuring Erni Clark, Elysian Spring, Radam Schwartz, Mary Lou Williams, Carmelo Garcia, Black Is ----, Cullen Knight, Don Menza, Belair, Andrew McPherson, Almanac, Owen Marshall, Bobby Jackson, and Compass.
Tom Waits – The Black Rider [Reissue/1993] CD/LP (Island)
2023 Marks 30 years since Tom Waits released The Black Rider. Originally released in 1993, The Black Rider is Tom Waits’ 12th studio album. The Black Rider is a musical comedy/horror collaboration between artists: Robert Wilson (director/designer) writer/Beat guru, William S. Burroughs (text) and Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan (music). Not a cast album, this Island Records release is Tom’s interpretation and performance of the songs he had originally created for the stage production of The Black Rider. The music is a Waitsian concoction of pop, vaudeville, rock, cabaret, and blues – a brew that is strangely familiar yet fresh.
Tom Waits – Bone Machine CD/LP (Island)
Originally released in 1992, Bone Machine is Tom Waits’ 11th studio album. Five years after Franks Wild Years, Bone Machine is a return to studio albums for Tom Waits. The album features David Hidalgo, Les Claypool, Brain, and Keith Richards and won a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Bone Machine is rather pointedly otherworldly… another edge pusher – his most poetically and sonically daring work yet. Writing again with his longtime collaborator and wife, Kathleen Brennan, Waits acknowledges writing ‘darker’ material saying, “A great many songs live there, so that’s where I’ve been digging lately.” Waits calls the songs on Bone Machine “little movies for the ears.”
