Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Abraxas - Monte Carlo LP (Suicide Squeeze)

Carolina Faruolo (ex-Los Bitchos) and Danny Lee Blackwell (Night Beats) had been friends and mutual admirers of each other's musical projects for years, though with Faruolo residing in the UK and Blackwell residing in Texas, their interactions were limited. Yet as was so often the case for many of us during the shelter-in-place stretches of 2020, geographic proximity wound up being a non-issue as our socializations became almost exclusively online endeavors. In this era of isolation and uncertainty, Faruolo and Blackwell invented their own private escape to Latin rhythms, colorful vistas, and smoky revelries under the project name of Abraxas. Combining their shared love of Wendy Renee, Los Destellos, doo-wop and R&B, they crafted their debut album Monte Carlo by bouncing ideas across the Atlantic. [Limited edition ‘alien eggshell pink vinyl.]

Darkthrone - Astral Fortress LP/CD (Peaceville)

From their formation back in 1986, to becoming one of Norways's finest musical exports (with a number of highly revered black metal masterpieces released in the early 90's helping to solidify their legacy), Darkthrone has continued to evolve and challenge in equal measure, throughout their illustrious recording career spanning over three decades. And now, the ever-productive duo of Nocturno and Fenriz continue their own metallic saga with a new selection of fine, vintage sounding headbanging classics in the making. Astral Fortress is itself a swift follow-up to 2021's Eternal Hails opus, as a result of Darkthrone's consistent and ongoing writing process, which has been in force for some years now. For Darkthrone does not sleep - it only waits. [Indie exclusive yellow vinyl.]

Dead Cross - II LP/CD (Ipecac)

When Dead Cross released their self-titled debut in the Summer of 2017, Mike Patton, in conversation with Rolling Stone, said "I'm not some young tough guy trying to prove a point anymore. For me to make a record like this, it's entirely a musical adventure. I just think it's fun, and it makes me smile a lot." Visually, and audibly, Dead Cross is a snarling beast from some of music's most experimental and dare we say, hardcore, musicians: Dave Lombardo (drums), Michael Crain (guitar), Justin Pearson (bass) and the aforementioned Patton on vocals, but at it's core it's a group of friends having fun, paying homage to the music they love and asking music fans to come along for the ride. It's that very friendship that brought the band members back together once again and gave us II, their new release. [Indie exclusive ‘glass coffin’ color vinyl.]

Actual Life 3 is a continuation of an autobiographical body of work that both references and pushes forwards the heritage of UK electronic music while standing as testament to the power of music in facilitating catharsis, healing and celebrating the realities of friendship, love and life.

Ghost Funk Orchestra - A New Kind of Love LP (Karma Chief)

Each song on Ghost Funk Orchestra's 3rd album, A New Kind of Love, resonates like the soundtrack to a scene from an imaginary movie. The music could score a romantic drama, an action thriller, or a modern twist on a classic film noir. The spare, cascading vocals accentuate the lush instrumental orchestrations composed, performed, arranged and produced by multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum, whose latest brainchild was conceived and conceptualized during The Great Pause of 2020, a time of tension, bewilderment and isolation. Evoking the grooviness of an era which preceded his arrival on earth, Applebaum draws upon sonic devices of mid-century exotica and the succinct but dense arranging style of the leaders of the pop orchestras which dominated the hit parades of the 60s and early 70s. He blends impressions of this bygone era with an expression of his actual experiences as a young filmmaker coming of age in the 21st century, citing influences such as Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Antibalas. A New Kind of Love encompasses a reverence for the past without attempting to recreate it. In the tradition of the "production forward" discographies of such record makers as David Axelrod and the Mizell Brothers, it's easy to visualize Applebaum as a "mad doctor" figure, hunkered down in a studio channeling this musical representation of his inner world into the 12 compositions which make up A New Kind of Love. [Indie exclusive translucent red vinyl.]
