Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Art Moore – Art Moore LP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Art Moore make vivid, heartbreaking short stories. Each song on the newly formed three-piece's self-titled debut album is its own individual universe of bittersweet feeling: a brief snapshot of a moment in time that captures the fragility and occasional impossibility of human connection. The ten tracks that comprise the record are deft character studies, zeroing in on restless widows, shy beginners, jilted friends and friendly exes, chronicling minute moments – road trips, casual dates, games of truth or dare – with rich detail and subtle wit. The result is a world of remarkable emotional complexity, an album-length study of loneliness, heartache, and loss that's sweet but never saccharine, sad but never maudlin. Featuring the inimitable songwriting of beloved Oakland luminary Taylor Vick of Boy Scouts set in sharp relief against lush production from Ezra Furman collaborators Sam Durkes and Trevor Brooks, it's a quietly wondrous record – a set of songs that sketch out the struggle and beauty of coping with everyday life.

Seth Avett – Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown CD (Ramseur)

New solo album from Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers (his first in five years), featuring songs written by lauded folk singer Greg Brown, whose songs have also been performed and recorded by Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Carlos Santana, Ani DiFranco, Gillian Welch, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and more. For those who may need reminding, Greg Brown is the ultimate songwriter's songwriter. Over a forty-plus-year career, he's occupied the same rarefied air as Loudon Wainwright III and John Prine - a keen-eyed poet and diarist of the human condition. And he's done it mostly on his own. "This is a man who put forty records out because he had to," Avett says. "He made his own record label. He played the coffee shops, the bars, the little theaters. He built it. He's a world-class artist who did it all under the radar, which is just mind-blowing to me." [Indie store exclusive maroon vinyl shipped late and will arrive early next week .]

Baby Keem – The Melodic Blue LP (Columbia)

The Melodic Blue is the debut studio album by rapper and producer Baby Keem, originally released in 2021. The album features guest appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Don Toliver, and Brent Faiyaz.

Rayland Baxter – If I Were A Butterfly CD/LP (ATO)

If I Were A Butterfly is Rayland Baxter's first new album in four years. For the making of his fourth album, Baxter holed up for over a year at a former rubber-band factory turned studio in the Kentucky countryside – a seemingly humble environment that proved to be something of a wonderland. If I Were a Butterfly finds Baxter co-producing alongside Tim O'Sullivan (The Head And The Heart, Grace Potter), slowly piecing together the album's patchwork of lush psychedelia and Beatlesesque pop. [Limited edition translucent orange vinyl is signed by Rayland! Available in the shop and in the Grimey's webstore.]

Big Joanie – Back Home CD/LP+MP3 (Kill Rock Stars)

Big Joanie is back with their sophomore record Back Home. Recorded at Hermitage Works Studios in North London, the album was produced and mixed by Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family). Back Home is a dramatic leap forward for the band; the band build on their tightly knit, lo-fi punk formula to bring forth a collage of blazing guitars, down tempo dance punk, and melancholic strings that evoke the full depth of the band's expansive art punk vision. [Indie store exclusive ’seafoam’ blue vinyl.]

The Blue Stones – Pretty Monster CD/LP (MNRK Music Group)

Pretty Monster is the new album from Candian rock duo The Blue Stones. “The album’s 10 tracks show The Blue Stones exploring sonic textures, with the band’s signature energetic tone wandering into new territory. For example, the album’s fifth track — ‘Stay With Me’ — ends with more than a minute of an echoey soundscape over drums with filter effects. ‘I don’t know if it was intentional, but when you’re in the process of recording in the studio, you kind of let your creative mind go,’ guitarist Tarek Jafar explained. ‘We like to extend sounds; we like to add outros — We like to add a little bit of flavor that isn’t so straight-down-the-middle rock ‘n’ roll.’ The Blue Stones assure that the musicianship on Pretty Monster is fully analog. But drummer Justin Tessier said he’s perfectly okay with his drum sounds mutating through production choices. ‘I don’t think that we’ve ever been fond of the idea that we’re taking up the mantle of rock n’ roll and keeping it alive,’ Tessier adds. ‘We both encourage progression and evolution.’” – Dalson Chen, Windsor Star

Born Without Bones – Dancer CD/LP (Pure Noise)

New album from the Massachusetts punk band. [A multi-color indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]

Louis Cole – Quality Over Opinion 2xLP+MP3 (Brainfeeder)

Luke Combs – Growin’ Up LP (SME Nashville)

Released in June on CD – now available on vinyl. Produced by Combs, Chip Matthews and Jonathan Singleton, Growin' Up is Combs' third studio album following 2019's 3x Platinum What You See Is What You Get and his 4x Platinum debut, This One's For You. The new album consists of twelve songs, including Combs' first single "Doin' This", which has topped the charts at country radio.

Companion – Second Day Of Spring LP (Asthmatic Kitty)

Green color vinyl pressing. At just 23-years-old, identical twin sisters Sophia and Jo Babb had faced a decade of darkness. Then, as Companion, they built lighthouses. With their debut album Second Day Of Spring, the duo arrive at the start of a blooming new season, holding a work that softly glows with a sincerity, vulnerability, and hopefulness that they fought hard to find along their way. "A lot of this album is rooted in healing from grief and familial hurt," says Sophia. "There are songs about marriage and healing from mistrust. Family ties that have been broken." Second Day Of Spring introduces two brilliant songwriters and mesmerizing singers as they share their stories with gazes at once light and weighted, offering listeners comfort in despairing corners.

Connie Constance – Miss Power CD/LP (Play It Again Sam)

English Indie-rock goddess Connie Constance's Miss Power is a bold collection of songs imbued with high voltage drums, snarling guitar riffs, and anthemic feminist rage. On Miss Power, Connie takes us on a joyride through dramatic, passionate, and empowering scenes with hooks aplenty and lyrics that excitedly unpick heartbreak, Connie's strained relationship with her father and her struggles with mental health. [Indie store exclusive clear w/ pink vinyl.]

Carla dal Forno - Come Around LP (Kallista Records)

On her third album, dal Forno grapples with ideas of home, disorder and insomnia in the swift pop structures of her DIY/post-punk forebearers such as Young Marble Giants, Virginia Astley, and Broadcast. Now based in Castlemaine, Australia (pop. 6750) after nearly a decade of moving, recording and touring out of Berlin and London, dal Forno's latest work embodies a newfound solitude born of/in elemental pop hooks and enlightened songwriting. The title track offers the best example of this confident, fresh candor. It's an elegant invite into dal Forno's sharp new focus beckoning old friends, relationships and audiences into her resettled home. This meandering pop hit strikes between the melodic simplicity of Anna Domino and YMG and the arrangement hooks of The Cannanes and Movietone, capturing dal Forno at her most welcoming with arms wide open.

Russell Dickerson – Russell Dickerson CD (Triple Tigers)

New release from the country music singer/songwriter.

Dreamcastmoe – Sound Is Like Water LP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)

Dreamcastmoe is the recording project of singer, songwriter, producer, and DJ Davon Bryant, a lifelong resident of Washington, DC. His music moves freely between moods and modes, hypnotic, romantic, traversing electronic, R&B, funk, soul, and hip-hop. Resident Advisor dubs it "soulful, cross-genre dance music." [Limited-edition ‘fruit punch’ color vinyl.]

Ezra Collective – Where I’m Meant To Be CD/2xLP/Cassette (Partisan)

Ezra Collective's new era, a venture in discovered maturity and raised stakes, will be defined by the anticipated second album. Where I'm Meant To Be is a thumping celebration of life, an affirming elevation in the Ezra Collective's winding hybrid sound and refined collective character. The songs marry cool confidence with bright energy. Full of call-and-response conversations between their ensemble parts, a natural product of years improvising together on-stage, the album - which also features Sampa The Great, Kojey Radical, Emile Sandé, Steve McQueen, and Nao - will light up sweaty dance floors and soundtrack dinner parties in equal measure. [Two vinyl colorways are available: orange and deluxe orange w/ yellow which includes a photobook.]

Lee Fields – Sentimental Fool LP (Daptone)

Released last week on CD – now available on vinyl. Lee Fields reunites with Daptone Records and producer Gabriel Roth to bring us Sentimental Fool, a deep, blues-tinged, wholly conceived soul album. From his first line to his final plaintive lyric, the beauty, power, and raw humanity of Lee's voice is on full display here; the culmination of an astounding career that has seemed to defy gravity, rising to only greater and greater heights.

First Aid Kit – Palomino CD/LP (Columbia)

Palomino is the highly anticipated fifth album from First Aid Kit, the critically acclaimed Swedish folk duo consisting of singer-songwriters, and sisters Johanna and Klara Soderberg. Their follow-up to 2018's BRIT Award-nominated Ruins is introduced by the promising singles "Angel" and "Out Of My Head". "We love this record. It's a special one. We can't wait for you to hear it!" the duo proclaims. [Indie store exclusive white vinyl. Also available in the Grimey's webstore.]

William Fitzsimmons – Covers, Vol. 1 LP (Nettwerk)

The appeal of William Fitzsimmons' sound is indicative of his unique upbringing and consequent life experience. Over the course of his career, Fitzsimmons has made his living writing a specific brand of honest and inward-looking folk songs that fearlessly and candidly examine the evolving self while dexterously communicating his talent for robust melodies and catchy instrumentation. He puts that skill on display throughout this collection of cover songs.

Steve Forbert – Moving Through America LP (Blue Rose Music)

Released last May on CD – now available on blue color vinyl. Steve Forbert has been a pioneer of the folk, roots-rock sound for more than four decades, navigating the twists and turns of an acclaimed career that's taken him from gold records to Grammy nominations, from New York City's CBGB to Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, from his 1978 debut album and now to his 22nd studio album, the vital and versatile Moving Through America.

Greedy Cherry - Bada Bing CD

A decade in the making, the debut full-length album by Greedy Cherry takes the listener on a whirlwind tour of an eclectic mix of styles and genres. From funk-driven rock to bluegrass and reggae to bossa nova, each song represents one of the many musical influences and loves of songwriter, bassist, and vocalist Michael Conrad. Created as a studio vehicle for Conrad’s songwriting, the project operates with a Steely Dan-influenced mindset: focusing on writing the best songs possible and then getting great musicians to contribute their considerable talents to each one. As a result, "Bada Bing" features an assorted lineup of phenomenal musicians, including very special guests Wendel “Junior Jazz” Ferrarro (Inner Circle, Monty Alexander), Kyle Patrick (The Click Five), and members of the Grammy-nominated all-female bluegrass band Della Mae!

Will Hoge – Wings On My Shoes LP (Will Hoge)

Recently released on CD – now on available on two vinyl colorways: indie store exclusive clear and limited-edition yellow. A celebratory nod to Will Hoge's songwriting hero ringing out with power chords and cymbal crashes, "John Prine's Cadillac" heralds the veteran singer-songwriters eagerly awaited twelfth studio album, Wings On My Shoes. It marks yet another milestone in the Grammy-nominated artist's two-decade-plus musical journey. Produced by Hoge during a week's worth of live performances at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios, Wings On My Shoes sees Hoge joined by his longtime backing combo, guitarist Thom Donovan, drummer Allen Jones, and bassist Christopher Griffiths, with guest multi-instrumentalist Joshua Grange contributing pedal steel and organ. It features few overdubs and zero studio trickery, wearing its rough edges with pride to stand tall as a document of a hardscrabble band at work, sweating and stomping its way toward rock ‘n' roll redemption.

Horse Lords – Comradely Objects LP+MP3 (RVNG Int’l)

Horse Lords return with Comradely Objects, a continuation of the quartet's exploration of repetition in minimalism and traditional musics, complex counterpoint, timbres and texture, but also an evolution of these sometimes-disparate musical strands wound tightly around propulsive rhythmic grids. The most sublime document yet of the band's ongoing interrogation of aesthetic and social form, purpose, and intent, Comradely Objects doesn't identify a new utopia so much as limn a thrilling portrait of revolution underway. [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

Joji – Smithereens CD (WB)

The third studio album from Japanese R&B/pop artist.

Caleb Landry Jones – Gadzooks Vol. 2 CD/LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)

Don't let the prestigious acting career fool you, Caleb Landry Jones is a bonafide musical maverick. And on his release Gadzooks Vol. 2 he places himself in a lineage of outsider artists, many with only a thin thread tethering them to this reality, who can reach into the cosmic realms of imagination and bringing back a musical masterpiece. [Limited edition red vinyl.]

Vance Joy – In Our Own Sweet Time LP (Atlatnic)

Released in June on CD – now available on vinyl. Multi-platinum singer-songwriter Vance Joy releases his highly anticipated third studio album, In Our Own Sweet Time. The eagerly awaited new album includes collaborations with hitmakers such as Joel Little (Lorde, Taylor Swift), Dan Wilson (Adele, Leon Bridges), Take a Day Trip (Miley Cyrus, Lil Nas X) and more.

Junior Boys – Waiting Game LP (City Slang)

White color vinyl pressing. Six years since their last album, 2016's Big Black Coat, Waiting Game finds producers Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus in a tender and contemplative mood; a switch-up from their punchy, R&B-infused dance melodics. The titles and lyrics of Waiting Game orbit around a singular theme: the feeling of waiting around for something, anything, to happen.

Peter Knight - Shadow Phase LP (Room40)

A new album from the Australian composer, trumpeter, and director of the Australia Art Orchestra. This is a recording which charts out a sense of perpetual opening, in a time of restrictive movement. Even at its most dynamic this is a music that carries itself with a quality of a reductive, yet effervescent landscape. It is a masterful exploration of sound, anchored by Knight's evocative approach to trumpet. From Peter Knight: "Most of this record was created in the shadow of COVID and deep in the maw of Melbourne's 2020 long winter lockdown. I recorded everyday using the trumpet, my old Revox reel-to-reel, a couple of synths, a harmonium I lent from a friend, and whatever else was around. I let the tones produced by my breath unfurl on long tape loops and degrade beyond recognition through pedal and plugin chains, until the only imprint of the initial gesture remained."

Steve Lacy – Gemini Rights LP (RCA)

Gemini Rights is the second studio album by musician Steve Lacy. It follows Lacy's debut album Apollo XXI (2019), and was preceded by the singles "Mercury", "Bad Habit" and "Sunshine". The album includes guest appearances from Fousheé, and Lacy's The Internet bandmate, keyboardist Matt Martians. Incorporating a variety of genres, the album has been described as an amalgamation of indie rock and alternative R&B, with elements of funk, jazz, and psychedelia.

The Lone Bellow – Love Songs For Losers LP (Dualtone Music Group)

Over the last ten years, The Lone Bellow has cast an indelible spell with their finespun songs of hard truth and redemptive beauty, faithfully delivered in hypnotic three-part harmony. In a departure from their past work with elite producers like Aaron Dessner of The National and eight-time Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, the Nashville-based trio struck out on their own for their album Love Songs For Losers, dreaming up a singular sound encompassing everything from arena-ready rock anthems to the gorgeously sprawling Americana tunes the band refers to as little redneck symphonies. Recorded at the possibly haunted former home of the legendary Roy Orbison, the result is an intimate meditation on the pain and joy and ineffable wonder of being human, at turns profoundly heartbreaking and sublimely transcendent. [All vinyl copies at Grimey’s are signed by the band! Available in the shop and in the Grimey's webstore.]

The Del McCoury Band – Almost Proud LP (McCoury Music)

Released in February on CD – now available on vinyl. The most awarded artist in the history of bluegrass, and one of the few artists with a direct connection to Bill Monroe still touring today, is back again with another stellar collection of songs, ranging from new songs that he wrote, originals from songwriting friends, and some covers that in his usual way, he puts his stamp on.

Mount Kimbie – MK 3.5: Die Cut City Planning CD/2xLP+MP3 (Warp)

The musical duo Mount Kimbie present a double album, MK 3.5: Die Cut City Planning, highlighting the individual work and production styles of Dom Maker and Kai Campos. Die Cut showcases Dom's work as a producer; skipping between hip-hop, R&B, and electronic pop, the album combines high class songcraft with a delicate leftfield touch, and featuring a cast of vocalists. Kai's City Planning twists avant-garde signifiers into a deft and refined statement with sleek beats and stuttering arpeggios layered with scuzz and personality, making for an album that's warm and inviting even at its most confrontational. MK 3.5: Die Cut City Planning shows how Dom and Kai have grown over the past decade and demonstrates the two sides of Mount Kimbie's aesthetic coin. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

Nina Nastasia – Riderless Horse LP+MP3 (Temporary Residence)

Clear w/ black color vinyl pressing. “Riderless Horse is my first solo record, and it's the first record my former partner, Kennan Gudjonsson, didn't produce. I haven't made an album since 2010. I decided to stop pursuing music several years after my sixth record, Outlaster, because of unhappiness, overwhelming chaos, mental illness, and my tragically dysfunctional relationship with Kennan. Creating music had always been a positive outlet during difficult times, but eventually it became a source of absolute misery. Riderless Horse documents the grief, but it also marks moments of empowerment and a real happiness in discovering my own capability.”

Emily Nenni – On The Ranch CD/LP (Normaltown)

The sun sets over the ranch, a can of beer cracks, and an acoustic guitar wrangles the day's thoughts and memories into a semblance of order. During moments like these, California-born and Nashville-based singer and songwriter Emily Nenni chronicles her life through delicate songcraft rife with honky-tonk spirit and spiked with just the right amount of soul. In possession of a deep understanding of music stoked by a lifelong passion and sharp chops shaped by endless sets in smoky bars and sizzling doublewides, she asserts herself as the consummate country storyteller on her full-length debut album, On The Ranch. [Indie store exclusive autographed tan & gold marbled vinyl.]

The Offering – Seeing The Elephant CD (Century Media)

“Technically flawless, Seeing The Elephant provides further evidence that The Offering are now a band to be taken seriously, if you hadn’t already. They blend their technical prowess with a heaviness that is often crushing in weight. The title was sourced during the US unrest of the George Floyd protests during the pandemic in 2020. The album is rich in political observation and human emotion. There’s frustration and anger in opener ‘W.A.S.P.’, a piledriving seven-and-a-half-minute epic that brings the record immediately into focus. It’s bookended by ‘Esther Weeps’, which features Cerce singer Becca Cadalzo and explores the repression of women by religion and societal structures. Surely in a time of wokeness, there can be no better anthem for our times?” – Paul Hutchings, Metal Talk

Old Fire – Voids LP (Western Vinyl)

Voids employs the vocal talents of Bill Callahan, Emily Cross, Adam Torres, and Julia Holter across twelve genre-fluid, yet impressively cohesive tracks that span baroque dream-pop, filmic ambient, raga-like drones, avant-country, and even spiritual jazz, all imbued with poetic heft and seared by the West Texas sun. It was beneath this same sun that Lapham lost both of his parents, mourned a withering relationship, and shouldered the fallout of the pandemic, turning his life into the rusted-out scraps he then used to build Voids from the ground up.

Jon Pardi – Mr. Saturday Night LP (Capitol Nashville)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Fourth album from multiplatinum country music hitmaker. Jon says about the album, "A lot of time was spent living with the songs on this record. There is more life experience on Mr. Saturday Night than any album I've released before."

Phoenix – Alpha Zulu CD (Glassnote)

Grammy Award-winning French quartet Phoenix returns with their long-awaited seventh studio album Alpha Zulu, their first since 2017's Ti Amo. Recorded during the height of the pandemic in Paris at the iconic Louvre Museum, the 10-track collection includes the title track single, "Identical" which was featured in Sofia Coppola's 2020 film On The Rocks and "Tonight" with Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig. [An indie-store exclusive CD version is available. Vinyl edition due January 13.]

Suzi Quatro – Suzi Quatro: Uncovered CD/LP (Sun)

Celebrating a new chapter in her nearly 60-year career as a trailblazing rocker, Suzi Quatro brings her signature style to a series of iconic covers on this new EP from Sun Records. Suzi Quatro: Uncovered features tracks originally made famous by artists like James Brown, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Carole King, and Otis Redding. Plus, she calls on the legendary Steve Cropper for collaboration on his own songs, "Midnight Hour", and "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay".

Tom Skinner – Voices Of Bishara CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Drummer, composer, and producer Tom Skinner (The Smile, Sons Of Kemet) releases his new album, Voices Of Bishara. The first recording under Skinner's own name is a reference to an album he listened to repeatedly during the COVID-19 lockdown: cellist Abdul Wadud's 1978 solo album By Myself, which was privately pressed on Wadud's label, Bishara. The common Arabic name has the intention or meaning of "good news" or "the bringer of good news." The album features Shabaka (Sons of Kemet) and Nubiya Garcia.

Sloppy Jane & Phoebe Bridgers – My Misery Will Bury You. 7” (Saddest Factory)

"A big part of the project and why I did it," says Sloppy Jane's Haley Dahl of her Saddest Factory debut Madison, "was because it felt similar to being a little kid and buying an outfit that was too big that I'd have to grow into. I really valued from the start that making Madison gave me someone I had to become." The record, originally released in 2021, is a grand gesture, a statement about big love, and about growing into yourself in the process. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Madison, Dahl has teamed up with former Sloppy Jane bass player, Phoebe Bridgers, for a limited-edition 7" featuring two versions of "Wilt".

Spoon – Lucifer On The Moon LP+MP3 (Matador)

On the heels of what Rolling Stone calls "maybe Spoon's best record ever," Lucifer On The Sofa, Spoon release a collaborative reconstruction of the studio record with legendary dub pioneer Adrian Sherwood (ON-U Sound).

Vince Staples – Ramona Park Broke My Heart LP (Motown)

Released in April on CD – now available on vinyl. Esteemed hip-hop artist Vince Staples follows up his intimate self-titled album with Ramona Park Broke My Heart. "There's a direct correlation," Staples says of the two records. "They were kind of created at the same time. I was in a similar state of mind. This album would make even more sense if you heard the previous one, but this one has more answers." Long Beach's Ramona Park neighborhood is dear to Vince's heart. "It's symbolic of home," he says of why he dedicated the album to it.

Tropical Gothclub – Tropical Gothclub LP (Third Man)

Dean Fertita has been at the heart of American rock 'n' roll for almost two decades, from his role as an invaluable member of Queens of the Stone Age and The Dead Weather, touring keyboardist with The Raconteurs, and backing musician on records by Jack White, Karen O, Iggy Pop, Brendan Benson, The Kills, Beck, and more. While his own music had been the focus in his role as lead singer, guitarist, and founder of The Waxwings and on recordings as Hello=Fire, Fertita began Tropical Gothclub with no clear mission for a solo album under his own name. "The Tropical Gothclub songs are like concept cars," says Fertita. "They were meant to be put into future production once they were reimagined and redesigned, so everything is tightened up. Creatively things changed and my options weren't just black and white. They were also fluorescent." [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

Turnover – Myself In The Way CD/LP (Run For Cover)

Myself In The Way is the Turnover’s fifth full-length album, and it follows their first pause in consistent touring in almost 10 years. While the world was shut down, Turnover's four bandmates spent time meditating, painting, volunteer firefighting, skateboarding, and working in state parks - deepening interests and growing roots in places they hadn't been able to while living life on the road for so long. Over 18 months, these individual experiences acted as the soil in which Myself In The Way grew into Turnover's next album. Returning to Pennsylvania to track with longtime friend and producer Will Yip, vocalist & guitarist Austin Getz cites Quincy Jones, Chic, and Dark Side Of The Moon as influences in the way that songs like the infectiously-rhythmic "Ain't Love Heavy" and the trippy, disorienting "Tears Of Change" feel wider, deeper and more whole than anything in the band's catalog to date. [A limited-edition cream color vinyl pressing is available.]

Suki Waterhouse – Milk Teeth CDEP (Sub Pop)

The Milk Teeth EP compiles singer-songwriter Suki Waterhouse's various non-album singles onto a physical release for the first time. It includes the song "Good Looking", which, in mid-2022, exploded on Tik Tok and hit #1 on the global viral chart. Suki Waterhouse catalogs the most intimate, formative, and significant moments of her life through songs. You might recognize her name or her work as an actress and model, but you'll really get to know the multi-faceted artist through her music. The Milk Teeth EP rightly shines a spotlight on her pre-album material, giving these six songs their first physical release. [Vinyl edition due November 11.]

The Welcome Wagon – Esther CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)

Esther was born out of a wellspring of creativity and homecoming, exploring the profound knowing and equally profound mystery in both family and faith. The single was an immediate smash and was followed by an equally amazing album. Second single "Dangerous" continued to push Busta creatively and was accompanied with a stellar video. Critics and fans alike applauded the record for its depth and well-crafted songs and it earned platinum status.

Simon Climie, Clapton’s long-time co-producer and engineer, oversaw these definitive remasters which are pressed on 180gm vinyl.

Iris DeMent – Infamous Angel [Reissue/1992] CD/LP (Yep Roc)

Iris DeMent released Infamous Angel in 1992. Nearly 30 years later, the album remains among the most singular and fully realized singer-songwriter debuts since the invention of that category in the early '70s. The abiding strengths of the album are especially impressive ' even a bit startling ' because 1992 is not a moment usually associated with her intimate brand of acoustic country music. In country history, the year 1992 is most immediately affiliated with Garth Brooks, whose album, The Chase, topped both the country and pop album charts that year, and with Billy Ray Cyrus' “Achy Breaky Heart”, which fueled a line dance craze. [Indie store exclusive ‘earthy brown’ vinyl.]

E-40 – My Ghetto Report Card [Reissue/2006] 2xLP (Reprise)

Waziri hails from a small part of Edo State in southern Nigeria called Afemailand, known for being a harmonious region where Muslims and Christians live-and dance-together. And there, as a devout Muslim and an exemplar of religious piety in his community, Waziri's music fuses Etsako/Afemai folk styles with pan-Nigerian highlife and pop to create a sublime vehicle for his Islamic philosophy that gets everyone-Muslims, Christians, whoever-on the dancefloor. This five-LP set focuses on Waziri's illustrious mid-career output - the music he created during the years leading up to and after he made his first hajj. Every song here (some of which you might recognize from The Muslim Highlife Of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah) strikes his signature balance of traditional music, highlife, and funk, as he entreats you to stay on the straight and narrow, though there's nothing straight about his beat.

New Books

Bob Dylan- The Philosophy of Modern Song HC (Simon & Schuster)

The Philosophy of Modern Song is Bob Dylan’s first book of new writing since 2004’s Chronicles: Volume One—and since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016.he Philosophy of Modern Song is Bob Dylan’s first book of new writing since 2004’s Chronicles: Volume One—and since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. Dylan, who began working on the book in 2010, offers his extraordinary insight into the nature of popular music. He writes over sixty essays focusing on songs by other artists, spanning from Stephen Foster to Elvis Costello, and in between ranging from Hank Williams to Nina Simone. He analyzes what he calls the trap of easy rhymes, breaks down how the addition of a single syllable can diminish a song, and even explains how bluegrass relates to heavy metal. These essays are written in Dylan’s unique prose. They are mysterious and mercurial, poignant and profound, and often laugh-out-loud funny. And while they are ostensibly about music, they are really meditations and reflections on the human condition. Running throughout the book are nearly 150 carefully curated photos as well as a series of dream-like riffs that, taken together, resemble an epic poem and add to the work’s transcendence.

Bono - Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story HC (Knopf)

As one of the music world’s most iconic artists and the cofounder of the organizations ONE and (RED), Bono’s career has been written about extensively. But in Surrender, it’s Bono who picks up the pen, writing for the first time about his remarkable life and those he has shared it with. In his unique voice, Bono takes us from his early days growing up in Dublin, including the sudden loss of his mother when he was fourteen, to U2’s unlikely journey to become one of the world’s most influential rock bands, to his more than twenty years of activism dedicated to the fight against AIDS and extreme poverty. Writing with candor, self-reflection, and humor, Bono opens the aperture on his life—and the family, friends, and faith that have sustained, challenged, and shaped him. Surrender’s subtitle, 40 Songs, One Story, is a nod to the book’s forty chapters, which are each named after a U2 song. Bono has also created forty original drawings for Surrender, which appear throughout the book.

Quentin Tarantino - Cinema Speculation HC (Harper)

In addition to being among the most celebrated of contemporary filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino is possibly the most joyously infectious movie lover alive. For years he has touted in interviews his eventual turn to writing books about films. Now, with Cinema Speculation, the time has come, and the results are everything his passionate fans—and all movie lovers—could have hoped for. Organized around key American films from the 1970s, all of which he first saw as a young moviegoer at the time, this book is as intellectually rigorous and insightful as it is rollicking and entertaining. At once film criticism, film theory, a feat of reporting, and wonderful personal history, it is all written in the singular voice recognizable immediately as QT’s and with the rare perspective about cinema possible only from one of the greatest practitioners of the artform ever.
