Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere CD/LP (Century Media)
Blood Incantation's Absolute Elsewhere is unlike anything you've ever heard before. Few can claim a sonic watershed as readily as the Denver, Colorado quartet. At roughly 45 minutes, the two compositions that make up this album are as confounding as they are engaging in their scope, melding the 70's prog leanings of Tangerine Dream (whose Thorsten Quaesching appears on "The Stargate [Tablet II]") with the deathly intent of Morbid Angel.
Leon Bridges - Leon CD/LP (Columbia)
'Leon' is the highly anticipated fourth album from Grammy Award-winning recording artist, songwriter, and performer Leon Bridges. With 13 tracks featuring Leon's signature storytelling and a unique blend of organic genre alchemy, 'Leon' is his most poignant, powerful, and personal work to date. He takes fans on a trip through the heart of Ft. Worth he knows best, the things he holds dear, and the people and places that shaped him. Featuring production by Ian Fitchuk (Beyonce, Noah Kahan), Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves), and Tyler Johnson (Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus), Leon describes the album as "somewhat of a self-portrait... I'm excited to share these stories about my home, about nostalgia, about my upbringing, about where I'm from, with all of you. I hope this music brings you back to your roots and your journey." (Indie exclusive smoke color vinyl.)
Anna Butterss - Mighty Vertebrate CD/LP (International Anthem)
'Mighty Vertebrate' is the International Anthem leader debut from Adelaide, Australia-born bassist and composer Anna Butterss. Butterss has steadily become a first-call for tour and studio work since moving to Los Angeles (after a stint in Bloomington, Indiana) in 2014. They’ve racked up credits with notables across the indie, jazz, and pop worlds alike – including Makaya McCraven, Phoebe Bridgers, Jason Isbell, Andrew Bird, and Daniel Villarreal – but their most notable contributions to the burgeoning West Coast creative music scene have been as a core member of both Jeff Parker’s ETA IVtet and rising proto-trance supergroup SML, who Pitchfork says “represents the thrilling next phase of a vibrant L.A. community.” [Limited edition ‘fossilized chartreuse’ color vinyl.]
Caribou - Honey CD/LP (Merge)
Upon first listen, two things about Honey are immediately clear: First, it is an entirely new kind of Caribou record. Second, in being an entirely new kind of Caribou record, it is in keeping with Dan Snaith's discography, each new album marked by radical thematic and sonic shifts. Honey is not a departure from the Caribou we've known up to this point but rather the product of a lifetime spent listening to and crafting immaculate pop music. After two intensely personal Caribou albums (Suddenly and the Grammy-nominated Our Love), Snaith now pulls himself away a little in search of music that isn't about any one person and is relatable to everybody. It also brings Snaith's two personas, Caribou and Daphni, closer together than ever before. On Honey, Snaith fuses their strengths into a record that grabs you and moves you like Daphni before it uplifts you like Caribou. Huge dancefloor tracks twinkle and surprise in a way only Snaith's productions can, with a freshness that defines an artist who is too excited by music-making to ever truly settle into any one sound. (Indie exclusive yellow ‘peak’ vinyl.)
Céu - Novela LP (Urban Jungle)
Recorded at Linear Labs Studio in Los Angeles, Novela is Céu's sixth studio album, featuring musical production by Céu as well as Brazilian musician and producer Pupillo (drummer of Nação Zumbi) and American multi-instrumentalist and arranger Adrian Younge (co-founder of Jazz Is Dead). The record features a wide range of collaborators, including American MC and songwriter LadyBug Mecca, Franco-Senegalese singer and songwriter anaiis, American singers Loren Oden and Jensine Benitez, American DJ and producer Frankie Reyes, French artist Hervé Salters (General Elektriks) and Brazilian national treasure Marcos Valle. In Novela, ancient technologies, healing, creaminess, bolero, polished stars, echoes of soul music, things of the earth, rap, and whispers to guides emerge. Throughout the record, there is a reaffirmation of the author's fearlessness, committed to her time, in the complexity and beauty of creative work. Always keeping the diversity of Brazilian music on the horizon.
Coldplay - Moon Music CD/LP (Atlantic)
Coldplay’s new album, their 10th, is produced Max Martin and, in tandem with Coldplay’s ground-breaking sustainability measures on their current tour - which has so far produced 59% less CO2e emissions than their previous stadium tour - the band have gone to great lengths to make the physical release of Moon Music as sustainable as possible. This will be the world's first album released as a 140g EcoRecord rPET LP, with each copy containing nine recycled PET-plastic bottles recovered from post-consumer waste. This will prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic, and provide an 85% reduction in manufacturing process CO2 emissions/kg compared to traditional 140g vinyl. (Limited edition translucent pink eco-vinyl.)
Cumgirl8 - The 8th Cumming CD/LP (4AD)
Like a scantily clad Creature from the Black Lagoon, Manhattan four-piece cumgirl8 has emerged from their primordial goo, resurrecting in striking full colour with a highly- anticipated announcement of new music. After coming-of-age with their introductory self-titled EP (2020), experiencing their own end with their RIPcumgirl8 EP (2021), and witnessing a twisted vision of the afterlife through their first EP on 4AD phantasea pharm (2023), cumgirl8 is now on the cusp of their 8th cumming by way of their long-awaited debut LP of that name.
D. Watusi - Watusioosie LP
New, second album from Nashville’s own D. Watusi! Produced by Jeffrey Novak and mixed by Andija Tokic, the new record features Christina Norwood, Dillon Watson, Cam Barrett and Ryan Dono.
Drug Church - Prude LP/CD (Pure Noise)
For over a decade, Drug Church have been building a very strong case that they're the best loud guitar band in the game; their fifth full-length PRUDE-a 28-minute blast of aggression, melody, irreverence, and genuine heart-feels like the undeniable proof. The album is so downright satisfying it tricks you into thinking there's nothing all that surprising about a difficult-to-pigeonhole punk band from Albany, NY. (Indie exclusive violet splatter vinyl.)
Finneas - For Cryin' Out Loud! CD/LP (Oyoy Inc)
Finneas returns with 'For Cryin' Out Loud!' his second studio album. Finneas' self-produced solo album was born out of a series of live studio sessions in Los Angeles, bringing together some of his closest friends and peers into one room. In contrast to his debut album OPTIMIST, which featured instrumentals written and performed solely by the artist himself, 'For Cryin' Out Loud!' sees Finneas expand his creative horizons to a classic studio/band environment, freeing Finneas and ultimately resulting in his most uplifting and raw body of work to date. [Indie exclusive gold ‘bio’ vinyl.]
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - No Title As Of 13 February 2024: 28,340 Dead CD/2xLP (Dandelion)
THE PLAIN TRUTH= we drifted through it, arguing. every day a new war crime, every day a flower bloom. we sat down together and wrote it in one room, and then sat down in a different room, recording. NO TITLE= what gestures make sense while tiny bodies fall? what context? what broken melody? and then a tally and a date to mark a point on the line, the negative process, the growing pile. the sun setting above beds of ash while we sat together, arguing. the old world order barely pretended to care. this new century will be crueler still. war is coming. don't give up. pick a side. hang on. love.
Geordie Greep - The New Sound CD/LP (Rough Trade)
"Music can be so much more than learning to play the same as everybody else. It can be anything you want. " Geordie's debut solo album boasts a brand of high quality, all-embracing alternative pop fun, walking the line between the ridiculous and brilliant with a teflon-coated aplomb. How the record came about is a thing to marvel at. Over thirty session musicians were involved in it's making, on two continents. Tracks often oscillate from whispers to shouts and start and end on a bang. The spirit of Greep's increasingly febrile and furtive soliloquies conjure up both Franks (Zappa & Sinatra), with a side of Scott Walker.
The Hard Quartet - The Hard Quartet CD/LP (Matador)
The Hard Quartet is a band. But what is a band? A band, perhaps, can be thought of as a body, a corpus, in which physically discrete lifeforms comprise a chimera that shrieks with one voice. In this particular band, which is one of millions in the world today, four players selflessly merge, become musical, and emit rock 'n' roll that is familiar but new, warm but icy, melodic but Sphinx-like in it's seductive and subtle riddles... essentially, The Hard Quartet has leveled, cultivated, and made lush an entirely new steppe in the ecosystem of guitar-bass-drums-voice agriculture. The band consists of Stephen Malkmus, Emmett Kelly, Matt Sweeney and Jim White.
Robyn Hitchcock - 1967: Vacations In the Past CD/LP (Glowing Green Frog)
1967: Vacations in the Past is a collection of covers from 1967 (with one original song by Robyn) recorded to accompany his memoir, 1967: How I Got There and Why I Never Left.
Jett Holden - The Phoenix CD/LP (Black Opry Records)
It wasn't that long ago that singer-songwriter Jett Holden had given up on a career in not only country music, but music entirely. Luckily, the desire to give up on his dream came right around the time Holly G, founder of Black Opry - an organization, tour and now record label celebrating and supporting Black artists in roots and country - stumbled upon his music online. "I found the first verse and chorus for 'Taxidermy' and asked if he planned on finishing the song," G says. "He told me he wasn't sure, so I got him a grant to finish and record that song." She reached out to Rissi Palmer, founder of the Color Me Country Artist Fund, and sent her the first verses of "Taxidermy." Moved by Holden's painfully earnest songwriting, Palmer awarded him the funds to complete the visceral song, setting him off on the journey he's on today. The song, which mounts a harsh critique of performative activism, made a mark on listeners. "That's when I realized I had the power to do something really cool here," Holden says. "People were connecting with my honesty, so I got a chance to say the things that people aren't saying and Black Opry Revue performances gave me the chance to say those things in safe places. That song launched my career." Now that he's set to share his art with the world in a genre where Black musicianship is rarely championed, being an example of what's possible isn't lost on Holden. "The first question Holly asked me was 'Why do you write music?' and I said 'I write the music I wish I heard when I was growing up.' If someone hears my music and it makes them feel safe and less alone, it's done it's job, and I've done my job." He also hopes the songs remind listeners that "You're not alone in this." "These feelings are valid. They're universal," he says of the album themes. "You're deserving of all the love in your life - regardless of how that looks." (Eco-mix vinyl.) Don’t miss Jett Holden when he joins us for a free, live in-store performance and signing on Wednesday, October 9th, at 4PM!
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 - Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head) CD/LP (Record Kicks)
Afrobeat virtuoso Seun Kuti iunleashes his latest musical masterpiece upon the world. Executive produced by legendary musician Lenny Kravitz and Fela Kuti's original engineer Sodi Marciszewer (artistic producer), 'Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)' promises to deliver a sonic experience like no other. With both Kravitz's and Sodi's expertise together with Seun Kuti's unmatched talent, the album is poised to redefine the boundaries of contemporary music while staying true to the roots of afrobeat. Featuring a tracklist of six electrifying songs, each track on 'Heavier Yet (Lays The Crownless Head)' embodies the spirit of resistance, resilience, and revolution.
Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn - Quiet In A World Full Of Noise CD/LP (Merge)
Dawn Richard and Spencer Zahn share a common collaborative ethos, a genuine sense of musical curiosity, and a cosmopolitan eagerness to escape the conventions of genre. That shared vision first brought them together on 2022's Pigments-icy and warm, stripped-down and grand, familiar and otherworldly-and now it has reunited them for Quiet in a World Full of Noise. By turns intimate, soul-baring, spectral, and startling, Quiet in a World Full of Noise blends atmospheric and orchestral soundscapes with mellifluous soul, jazz, and journalistic vocalizing-driving it all home with stark, confessional lyricism. The new album finds Richard at her most raw and exposed.
Schande - Once Around LP (Daydream Library Series)
UK-based noise rock outfit Schande presents their debut LP Once Around, via The Daydream Library Series, the house record label of Ecstatic Peace Library operated by Thurston and Eva Moore. The band, fronted by Thurston Moore Guitar Ensemble member Jen Chochinov, has shared a trio of singles showcasing the band's melodically angular approach to songwriting -- searing and calm in equal measures, reminiscent yet distinctive. Inspired by the works of writers such as Hannah Arendt and Adriana Cavarero, Once Around focuses on notions of personal existence and subjectivity. Schande's current sound was shaped by Chochinov's stint playing in the Thurston Moore Guitar Ensemble. On the heels of playing with the group, Chochinov started experimenting with alternative tunings, including those she learned from Thurston himself. The freedom offered by new tunings gave the band a chance to approach songs and song writing in a new way.
Mindy Smith - Quiet Town CD/LP (Compass)
Quiet Town is the sixth studio album from the critically acclaimed and Americana Award-winning singer-songwriter Mindy Smith, bringing a treasured musical voice back into the spotlight. For her first album of new material in 12 years, Smith called on producer and musician Neilson Hubbard, alongside engineer Dylan Alldredge, and enlisted guitarists Will Kimbrough, Megan McCormick, and Juan Solorzano, bassist Lex Price, Danny Mitchell on keys and horns, and a host of acclaimed vocalists for the background vocals. Smith’s talent for expressing the most human of vulnerabilities is on full display on the new album. Beyond the title track, other album highlights include "Jericho," co-written with esteemed artist and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame songwriter Matraca Berg, which gives voice to anticipation of impending life changes of monumental import; "I'd Rather Be a Bridge," a plea for compassion and connection; and "Farther Than We Should Have," co-written with Natalie Hemby and K.S. Rhoads. The latter is a song about overcoming the deck stacked against kindred spirits who together trek through a difficult journey and find footing beyond beating the odds. Releasedvia Compass Records on CD and Limited Edition Red Vinyl.
The Smile - Cutouts CD/LP (XL Recordings)
The Smile - Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood and Sons of Kemet's Tom Skinner - return with their third album 'Cutouts'. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, in Oxford and in moments on the road, the tracks feature strings by the London Contemporary Orchestra as well as contemporary UK jazz player Pete Wareham [flute]. (Indie exclusive white vinyl.)
Thee Sacred Souls - Got A Story To Tell CD/LP (Daptone)
Highly Anticipated Follow-Up to Breakout 2022 Debut! Got a Story to Tell refines the sweet soul sounds Thee Sacred Souls have become famous for, delivering a genre-pushing collection of songs that exhibit a magnetic coolness and swagger. The relaxed quality of the musicianship coupled with Josh Lane's heart-wrenching voice, gives the album a maturity that carries the listener through many facets of the soul music spectrum. (Indie exclusive magenta vinyl.)
Dan Tyminski - Live From The Ryman LP (8 Track Entertainment)
With his newest self-produced release, Dan proves live music's power to communicate and connect as it shines a light on his acclaimed live show. Recorded in Nashville at the Ryman Auditorium - the legendary venue known as "The Birthplace of Bluegrass" - the album showcases the sharp songwriting, full-throttle vocals, and guitar chops that have powered Tyminski's music for decades. It's also a showcase for his ace band, a young group of fiery flat-pickers, hotshot instrumentalists, and harmony singers whose sheer talent is matched only by the band's frontman.
Marcos Valle - Tunel Acustico CD/LP (Far Out Recordings)
Between the release of his first album in 1962 and 2024, Marcos Valle has released twenty-two studio albums traversing definitive bossa nova, classic samba, iconic disco pop, psychedelic rock, nineties dance and orchestral music. With his twenty-third studio album Túnel Acustico, Valle set out to bring it all together. Originally breaking out in the mid-sixties during bossa nova's international proliferation, Valle toured with Sergio Mendes and became hugely in demand as a composer and arranger. He spent the years following Vietnam in Rio writing music for TV and film, as well as four cult favorite albums in collaboration with some of Brazil's most groundbreaking musicians including Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Som Imaginario, and O Terco. On Túnel Acústico, Valle's core band features two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth: Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums. The rhythm section is completed by percussionist Ian Moreira, with additional contributions from guitarist Paulinho Guitarra and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc.
The Wild Feathers - Sirens CD/LP (New West)
The longtime Nashville band returns this year with Sirens, a new LP of road-worn, sharply-woven tales chronicling a life worth living, love worth holding and the hard-earned lessons found along the ride. To cut the follow-up to 2021 album Alvarado – the band’s debut on independent label New West Records – The Wild Feathers decamped from Music City, U.S.A., to Los Angeles for sessions with producer Shooter Jennings (known for his work with Brandi Carlile, Turnpike Troubadours and Tanya Tucker, among others) at Dave’s Room in North Hollywood. [Limited edition opaque jade vinyl.]
Yasmin Williams - Acadia CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Comprising nine original, mostly instrumental, tracks written and produced by Williams, it features her on various guitars, banjo, calabash drum, tap shoes, and kora. Williams is joined on the album by an eclectic cast of collaborators - including Immanuel Wilkins on saxophone, Dom Flemons on rhythm bones, Aoife O'Donovan on vocals, William Tyler on guitar, and many others-creating a folk music that reflects the wide range of musical influences that have inspired her throughout her life.

Broadcast - Distant Call: Collected Demos, 2000-2006 CD/LP (Warp)
Distant Call follows May’s Spell Blanket – Collected Demos 2006-2009, which looked into what would be the collective’s fifth album, built out of the demos that Keenan left after her tragic passing in 2011 at the age of 42. The singer had contracted pneumonia during the band’s tour in Australia. Though the band understandably ceased to be, Broadcast co-founder James Cargill announced that the demos left by Trish would form a new album. The resulting record was built of sonic ephemera from seance-like recitations and sketches, featuring everything from cut-up lyrics to more developed compositions that showed a quirky psych and freak-folk flavour. Distant Call, however, reflects on previously released tracks as relics from an unreachable and, indeed, distant past. The ghostly sound of demo recordings emphasises the record as a farewell to the band and a memorial to Keenan.
Donald Byrd - Kofi LP (Blue Note)
Drawn from two sessions in 1969 and 1970, Kofi found Donald Byrd in the early stages of his transformation from top-notch hard bop trumpeter to fusion pioneer. Byrd explores a variety of textures with bandmates including Frank Foster, Lew Tabackin, Duke Pearson, Ron Carter, Mickey Roker and Airto Moreira. Blue Note Tone Poet Series stereo edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes.

High Rise - Disturbance Trip 2LP (Black Editions/La Musica Records)
Ten blistering performances from Tokyo's legendary High Rise. Recorded live in 1992, Disturbance Trip (BE 016LP) is a previously unreleased, distortion-saturated gem recorded in the same era as their third studio album, Dispersion. Guitarist Munehiro Narita's unmatched ability to channel the pure energy/spirit of rock and roll and hard psychedelia is on full display; his riffs are heavy and propulsive, his solos dizzying and transcendent. Nanjo's fuzz bass lays down hypermobile lines that swing and thunder as he intones lyrics that echo in the distance. Disturbance Trip is the first release on the resurrected La Musica Records, Asahito Nanjo's mystifying, apocryphal cassette label started in the 1990s and documenting the most obscure reaches of the Japanese psychedelic underground.

Various Artists - Electro Throwdown: Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack On Planet Earth CD/2xLP (Soul Jazz)
Soul Jazz Records’ new collection, ‘Electro Throwdown - Sci-Fi Inter-Planetary Electro Attack on Planet Earth 1982-89’, is a journey into the outer reaches of electro, a galactic roller-coaster ride of turbo-charged sci-fi grooveology. The album is comprised of mainly private-press and independent label electro jams of the highest calibre (with some as rare as space ships landing on Mars) all created in the 1980s, at a time when a vocoder, a Roland TR-808 drum machine and a groove was all that was needed to get the party started. With a few notable exceptions (Michael Jonzun’s Jonzun Crew and The Packman) the album features mainly under-the-radar killer tracks from a host of one-off artists and back-room electronic pioneers – including Pretty Tony, Planet Detroit (James McCauley, aka Maggotron) and Rich Cason - who together helped shape the sound of electro across the USA from Miami to New York, Los Angeles and beyond during the 1980s.
