Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

The Amity Affliction – Let The Ocean Take Me (Redux) CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Australian metalcore band The Amity Affliction celebrated the 10th anniversary of their landmark album Let The Ocean Take Me with the release of Let The Ocean Take Me (Redux). [An indie store exclusive blue w/ white color vinyl pressing is available for special order.]

Being Dead - Eels CD/LP/Cassette (Bayonet Records)

Being Dead's records are mosaics, technicolor incantations, each song it's own self-contained little universe. And while the dreamlike EELS probes further into the depths of the duo Being Dead's psyche, it is, most importantly, in the year of our lord 2024, a 16-track record that is genuinely unpredictable from one track to the next: a joyous and unexpected trip helmed by two true-blue freak bitch besties holed up in a lil' house in the heart of Austin, Texas. [Limited edition ‘speckled dragon egg’ color vinyl.]

The Black Dahla Murder – Servitude CD/LP (Metal Blade)

New release from the veteran metal band. Servitude is the first album after the death of singer Trevor Strnad. Guitarist Brian Eschbach has taken over the vocals. With the tragic passing of TBDM frontman and co-founder Trevor Strnad in 2022, after a period of profound grief and soul-searching, band co-founder Brian Eschbach moved from guitar to vocals. Former TBDM member Ryan Knight returned to take Eschbach’s place on guitar. The new lineup made their debut in TBDM’s hometown of Detroit in October 2022 for a tribute show for Strnad. “Everyone that’s in the band now is someone that Trevor and I searched for,” Eschbach says. “We spent so much time on the road together that everyone understands the mission statement. We don’t really need to talk about it. We just need to make great music and try to make people happy playing it.” [Indie store exclusive ‘rising smoke’ vinyl.]

Naima Bock – Below A Massive Dark Land CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Most of the writing of Naima Bock’s second album, Below A Massive Dark Land, was a solitary affair. It may not sound like it – it’s made up of strong, purposeful arrangements with a huge host of musicians, filled with cradling space and warm light. This will also come as a surprise to anyone who has seen Naima perform in the time since the release of her 2022 debut Giant Palm, which was undoubtedly a communal experience. But there’s power in the solitary, too. Giant Palm was arranged with collaborator Joel Burton but going this one alone in search of something that was truly hers, Naima found she was capable of more. [Limited ‘loser edition’ blue vinyl.]

Kate Bollinger – Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind CD/LP (Ghostly Int’l)

On Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, the kaleidoscopic full-length debut from Kate Bollinger, entire worlds lie in the small details. "When I'm recording a song," the Charlottesville-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter observes, "my indication of whether it's worth pursuing is if I'm seeing a movie in my head to go along with it." Blending classic pop songcraft with scrappy punk instincts, Bollinger casts a collage-like vision that's instantly memorable and uniquely mystifying. Ranging from homespun folk songs to warmly rendered psychedelic rock-like early Rolling Stones as fronted by Hope Sandoval-the resulting album can feel like flipping through your coolest friend's record collection, finding a new favorite song with each discovery. [Limited edition ‘blue moon’ color vinyl.]

Bring Me The Horizon – Post Human: NeX GEn CD/2xLP (Columbia)

Post Human: Next Gen is the seventh studio album by British rock band Bring Me The Horizon. Over the years, BMTH's style has evolved, incorporating elements of electronic, pop, and alternative rock, reflecting a more diverse musical palette.

Jack Chrysalis - Jack Chrysalis LP (Mana)

Combining steppy dance music, lush detail and a diaristic tone, Jack Chrysalis' debut album dials between music that is destined to catch the ear of the club-goer and the heart of the dreamer, his signature propulsive mutations of organic techno and UK garage sounding strongly in tracks like 'Another Year' and 'Coldharbour.' Between these, Chrysalis threads in more introspective moments. Tracks formed by running a hand along piano keys in improvisation, or made in recollection of Koji Kondo's clear bright musical palette for Zelda. They lend a sense of atmosphere and a deeper running mood to the album's overworld, heightening endorphin hits from the garage swing and affording a little more bittersweetness to its textures and secrets.

Common & Pete Rock – The Auditorium Vol. 1 CD/2xLP (Loma Vista)

Legendary hip-hop figures Common and Pete Rock showcase their evolved prowess in their debut collaboration, The Auditorium, Vol. 1. Despite years apart, their synergy is palpable. Pete's groundbreaking production, blending intricate harmonies, and Common's multifaceted artistry shine through. Their meticulous process births 15 tracks that blend nostalgia with innovation. With cameos from Jennifer Hudson and De La Soul's Posdnuos, each element is carefully curated, resulting in a timeless masterpiece. This album not only celebrates their individual growth but also sets the stage for future volumes. [Indie store exclusive forest green vinyl.]

Cornelius – Dream In Dream LP (Like Ltd)

Dream In Dream by Cornelius is the brainchild of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada; the genre-defying producer and multi-instrumentalist. Last year Cornelius released the highly anticipated seventh studio album, Dream In Dream, which marks the first full-length album since the critically acclaimed Mellow Waves in 2017. [Multiple colorways are available.]

Daughtry- Shock To The System (Part One) CDEP/12” (Big Machine)

Daughtry's Shock to the System (Part One) offers up the first set of tracks in a two-part project that continues pulling back the curtain on frontman Chris Daughtry's personal life. Six new songs, highlighted by amplified production and commanding vocals, showcase the universal story of a life laid bare by grief and built back up again through sheer determination. [Limited edition light blue color vinyl.]

John Davis – Jinx LP (Lost In Ohio)

Orange vinyl. John Davis (frontman of Superdrag and The Lees of Memory) is back with a brand-new set of songs, originally written to be released as a new Superdrag album. Recorded and performed with father-son duo Stewart & Henry Pack (legends in the Knoxville music scene) and taking inspirations from groups like Ramones and Meat Puppets, this is the most musically focused album of John's career.

Gavin DeGraw – Chariot 20 CD/LP+7” (SME Nashville)

Multi-Platinum, world-renowned entertainer Gavin DeGraw is returning to the project that started it all with Chariot 20, a brand new, reimagined version of his debut album. This revisited version reunites DeGraw with Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, who produced DeGraw's acclaimed 2022 album Face The River. It also features two previously unreleased tracks written during DeGraw's original Chariot sessions: "Get Lost" and "Love Is Stronger (Alright)." [A color vinyl pressing is available.]

Wendy Eisenberg - Viewfinder LP (American Dreams Records)

In a career full of bold, genre-blending statements, Wendy Eisenberg’s double album Viewfinder is their boldest yet. Viewfinder is about what happens when you reach clarity and it throws you off-balance, and what it means to love something without understanding why you love it. Eisenberg leads a large band of NYC jazz musicians, including Booker Stardrum (drums) and Chris Williams (trumpet). Together, they push the boundaries of jazz into songcraft, songcraft into art song, and art song into jazz, cementing Eisenberg’s work as a guitarist, improviser, composer - and establishing Eisenberg as a singular talent in 21st-century jazz.

Ezra Collective – Dance, No One’s Watching CD/2xCD/2xLP (Partisan)

Dance, No One's Watching is an ode to the sacred, yet joyous act of dancing, an album that musically guides you through a night out in the city, from the opening of possibilities as a new evening spans out ahead, to dawn’s final hours as the night comes to a close. Written during a blistering 2023 which saw Ezra Collective tour the world and become the first jazz act to win the Mercury Prize, Dance, No One's Watching is a documentation of the many dance floors they encountered. From London to Chicago, Lagos to Sydney, dance and rhythm connect us. These songs are a testament to that spirit. [Deluxe CD and vinyl versions are available, as well as satin red vinyl.]

Feeling Figures – Everything Around You LP (K. Records)

Compared to Migration Magic, Everything Around You is a considerably deeper dive into the Figs universe, a more deliberate collection that includes compositions which push into the expanse, drawing from a broader palette of art rock influences. The songs on this album navigate tensions between the personal and political, encompassing inner turmoil and deep-seated desires for change at the entangled axis of individual and social transformation. 'Everything Around You' is their most fully realized accomplishment to date; the best recorded representation of their boundless, idiosyncratic approach to guitar-based music. A summation years in the making, years in waiting, finally set free.

Bill Frisell / Kit Downes / Andrew Cyrille - Breaking the Shell CD/LP (Red Hook Records)

Breaking The Shell is a groundbreaking album from guitar icon Bill Frisell, pipe organist Kit Downes and drummer Andrew Cyrille. This highly anticipated, new collaborative release showcases a unique and rarely heard combination of instruments. The result is a meditation on sonancy and an opportunity for three highly creative spirits to roam freely within an entirely new dimension.

Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors – Strangers No More: Volume Two CD (Magnolia Music/Tone Tree)

This is a band at the peak of its powers. Drew Holcomb and his Neighbors recorded 21 songs over a two-week period and split them into two volumes. Volume Two features a breadth of genre defying recordings of songs about love, loss, betrayal, the passage of time, and the ties that bind and break us as humans. There are songs centered around specific human experiences like Suffering, Forgiveness, Imagination, and Shelter which take the listener through a rock ‘n’ roll and soulful journey into the unanswerable questions of how to navigate the joy and pain that we all face. [CDs arrived in time but vinyl shipped late and will be here next week.]

Christian Lee Hutson – Paradise Pop. 10 LP (ANTI-)

A Los Angeles singer/songwriter with an acute gift for intimate and detailed introspection, Christian Lee Hutson threads through avenues of light Americana, smart indie pop, and lo-fi folk storytelling. The tone of his music is usually gentle, but there's an insistence and clarity in his lyrics that gives his performances a strength alongside it's newfound indie rock edge. Although he began his solo career in the early 2010s, he gained popularity as a writer and collaborator during the latter part of the decade, working on projects with Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers, the latter of whom helped produce Hutson's Anti- debut, Beginners, in 2020. Bridgers and Oberst teamed up to produce 2022's Quitters, and now Bridgers is back producing his new record Paradise Pop. 10. [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl.]

Kit Sebastian – New Internationale LP (Brainfeeder)

Red vinyl. New Internationale is the Brainfeeder debut by Kit Sebastian – purveyors of stunning, contemporary music that fuses Anatolian psychedelia, Brazilian Tropicalia, ‘60s European pop and American jazz. The London-based duo weave a psychedelic tapestry of global influences, vintage synths and melancholy élan from the beaches of Bahia to the streets of Istanbul and Paris. Employing a vast array of instruments – zithers, harpsichords, congas, bongos, balalaikas, organs, saxophones, Indonesian metallophones, santours and baglamas – their unique sound evokes a borderless planet and the seamless commune between past and present.

Lil Peep – Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1 CD/LP (Death Note Music)

Come Over When You're Sober, PT.1 is the debut studio album by American rapper and singer Lil Peep. Originally released August 15, 2017, the album features well known singles "Benz Truck (гелик)" and “Save That Shit”. [Limited edition pink in clear vinyl.]

JD McPherson – Nite Owls CD/LP (New West)

JD McPherson has created something unique and amazing with his latest album, Nite Owls. His first album release since 2018’s critically acclaimed Christmas classic, Socks. Over the past 5+ years, McPherson has stayed consistently busy writing new songs while at the same time touring with Alison Krauss and Robert Plant. Being a touring musician offers the chance to see the sights, tour the town and pick up some inspiration from the local record shop. With Nite Owls, JD wanted to try something new and different. He wanted to take the inspiration from multiple decades and styles and incorporate them into his own sound. [Indie store exclusive white, black and blue ‘nite owl’ splatter vinyl.]

Martha Skye Murphy - Um LP (AD 93)

Meaning shifts throughout Martha Skye Murphy's debut album Um with songs that meld moments of baroque beauty with crashes of electronic noise, employing textures that are by turns organic and artificial, hi-fi and lo-fi. Collaborations with the likes of Claire Rousay and Roy Montgomery are finely intertwined with the fruits of rigorous studio sessions with producer Ethan P. Flynn. As a vocalist Murphy has a rare talent for transformation, from her intimate, cracked whispers over the hypnotic drift of "Theme Parks," to her piercing disembodied wails as "Kind" implodes into a cataclysm of electronic noise. In the studio, she and co-producer Ethan P. Flynn focused on maximizing those vocal capabilities by teasing out different personas, extracting different characters from the depths of her own psyche who gesture towards the fact that "the self" is ultimately a vague and impermanent thing.

Mustafa – Dunya CD/LP (Jagjaguwar)

Dunya, the title of Mustafa's masterfully crafted and breathtakingly tender full-length debut, roughly translates from Arabic to "the world in all its flaws." It's a lofty subject for a young songwriter, but as with every theme at the heart of the Sudanese-Canadian artist's work - from religious devotion to childhood trauma, gang violence to romantic intimacy - he approaches it through a personal lens. Blending genres and moods, weaving novelistic details into instantly memorable folk songs, he has crafted a record that feels like a series of personal breakthroughs, arriving one after the other. [Limited edition green vinyl.]

Tig Notaro – Hello Again LP (Secretly Canadian)

October Drift – Blame The Young CD/LP (Physical Education Recordings Unlimited)

Blame The Young is the third album by the Taunton based alternative rock band October Drift. “Blame The Young” (the title song) explores denial and blame. It works on a personal level but also on a societal and political level too. The housing crisis, the food crisis, poverty, the unravelling of the NHS - blame the young, blame immigration. The album’s central theme is ownership of our own decisions, actions and choices with an element of youthful defiance. [Indie store exclusive tricolor vinyl.]

Pale Waves – Smitten CD/LP (Dirty Hit)

Phantastic Ferniture – Phantastic Ferniture LP (Polyvinyl)

Orange in pink color vinyl. Phantastic Ferniture is the project of old friends Julia Jacklin, Elizabeth Hughes, Ryan K Brennan, and Tom Stephens, who wanted to shake the shackles of their meticulously crafted solo work to experience a second, giddy adolescence. That's evident in the urgent garage-pop perfection of the band's more spontaneous and less technical self-titled debut.

Ripped To Shreds – Sanshi Mocks CD/LP (Relapse)

Ripped To Shreds return with their highly anticipated new album, Sanshi. The band explodes out of the underground with all the blood-soaked hallmarks of the hellacious Ripped To Shreds sound - an onslaught of frenetic dueling solos, blasting drums, and van Drunen-esque vocals that further fuse the grit and grime of old school death metal and grind with the here and now. [Limited edition slime green vinyl.]

Shaboozey – Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going LP (American Dogwood)

Determined to carve his own lane in the alt-country/hip-hop space, Shaboozey crafts a sound that pays homage to a cast of traditional Western influences, such as Bob Dylan, Lead Belly, Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen, while looking into the future of what the two genres have yet to introduce. Remaining true to his Virginia roots, Shaboozey hopes to continue the region's long-standing tradition of producing some of the most prolific creatives of the new millennium.

Walter Smith III – three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not CD (Blue Note)

Saxophonist Walter Smith III pays homage to his hometown of Houston, Texas on his sophomore Blue Note album, three of us are from Houston and Reuben is not, the follow-up to 2023's return to casual. The album's wry title signifies the lineup, which includes fellow Houston natives - pianist Jason Moran and drummer Eric Harland - while bassist Reuben Rogers, who hails from the Virgin Islands, rounds out the quartet. Together they enliven 10 compelling Smith originals and an imaginative rendering of the Sam Rivers composition "Point of Many Returns" - all of which speaks to Smith's ascending status as one of modern jazz's most engaging talents of his generation.

Alan Sparhawk – White Rose, My God CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Alan Sparhawk of Low’s solo debut for Sub Pop is at once a bold new, electro-pop-infused adventure, and an extension of the innovation and experimentation that drove his work as a member of Low. It is his first album since the tragic 2022 loss of his wife and partner in Low, Mimi Parker. Recorded primarily by Alan at his home, with additional work and mixing by co-producer and young Minneapolis musician Nat Harvie. [Limited ‘loser edition’ crystal-clear vinyl.]

Styrofoam Winos - Real Time LP (Sophomore Lounge)

On Real Time, Styrofoam Winos 2nd full length of originals for the Sophomore Lounge label, you imagine – and firmly believe – that their relationship extends beyond studios and stages. You believe they not only play music together, but eat meals together, live down the street from one another, practice three days a week because it’s fun, read the same books, and that they’ve agreed in some wordless, musical bond that this is who they are. As a listener, and inevitable fan, you wonder if they found each other by a stroke of luck or the hand of destiny. You believe that they can probably read each other’s minds and that their music is as joyous to them as it is to you. After all, this is what we love about early R.E.M. records, the brainier grooves of Pavement, and the discographies of Yo La Tengo and The Breeders.

Trace Mountains – Into The Burning Blue LP (Lame-O/Run For Cover)

Into The Burning Blue, the fifth studio album from Trace Mountains, begins underwater. Songwriter Dave Benton was too. And though the songs were derived from a place of pain and heartbreak, Into The Burning Blue is an adventurous, bold, and groovy album about movement. Benton is at his most declarative, depicting his constant tread of water to stay afloat, and the occasional triumph that comes as reward. Blue vinyl.

Tsha is a rising star int the electronic music world. With Sad Girl, Tsha welcomes a new era, one where she's putting her own vocal stamp on tracks and approaching the genres she's always wanted to, rather than seeking approval from her peers. Rather than showcasing just the euphoric or melancholy sides of her character, Tsha puts it all on display in Sad Girl. It's a body of work that shows it's OK to be sad, and you can even revel in it - you can't have the highs without the lows, after all. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]

Co-produced by Jerry Finn and Butch Vig, the album retains the Bay Area outfit's signature aggression and pathos - forging ever forward into uncharted territory like the virtuoso guitar intro of "The Leaving Song Pt. 2" or the industrial-leaning break and Dead Can Dance-worthy outro of "Death Of Seasons."

Balance And Composure – Separation [Reissue/2011] LP (Hopeless)

New colorways. According to Balance And Composure, they can be loud, quiet and everything in between. An apt description in a nutshell. Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music CD/LP (Tangerine Records)
Ray Charles - Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music Volume Two CD/LP (Tangerine Records)

The iconic, game changing Modern Sounds in Country And Western albums, combined into a single release for CD in the 2000s, are now restored and released individually, as originally intended. The significance of these records cannot be overlooked. They are proof that great country music is malleable, and open to interpretation. Volume 1 quickly became one of the best-selling albums recorded by a Black musician of the time, as well as one of the best-selling country albums. It topped the Billboard Pop Album Chart of a month, and spawned four hit singles, including "I Can't Stop Loving" which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, R&B, and the Adult Contemporary Charts, was nominated for Record Of The Year, and won the GRAMMY for Best Rhythm & Blues Recording at the 5th Annual Grammy Awards in 1963. "You Don't Know Me" met with similar success. Ray Charles remains the first and only Black performer to earn a GRAMMY Award and a #1 Billboard Pop Chart Hit with a country and western song as he did with "l Can't Stop Loving You." Volume 2 followed it's predecessor by just six months, and is widely regarded as just as strong, if not stronger than the first - the second made with the confidence that this formula or country & soul works. With three hit singles on both the R&B and Pop charts, including the #1 hit You Are My Sunshine, both volumes changed the course of popular music and remain a testament to the genius of Ray Charles.

Guitar virtuoso Dennis Coffey's first LP for Westbound Records was released in 1975 and is a tour de force in funky guitar wizardry unlike anything else. While Coffey's technical fireworks remain the centerpiece of the record, some of the rawer psychedelic elements of his earlier work are replaced by a slicker, more produced sound. This new style clearly lays the groundwork for Coffey's transition, as the 70's progress, into a more commercial, disco-oriented sound on his own recordings, as well as on his writing and production work for other artists such as CJ and Co. [Limited edition red vinyl.]

The big band tracks were recorded in 2014 and the duets more recently. Chris White and Paul Moran individually picked the songs that they wanted to do new band arrangements for. The Willie Nelson and Kurt Elling tracks were recorded in 2018 and 2019, the Curtis Stigers and Joss Stone tracks in 2018." - Van Morrison
