Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Another Dancer - I Try to Be Another Dancer LP (Aguirre Records)
Originated in the Brussels DIY, indie rock and noise scene, a new kid on the block appears: Another Dancer. They deal in utopian music -- of the open, welcoming and whatsoeverish kind. It's fresh, snotty, neurotic art-rock deeply rooted in '80s/'90s DIY aesthetics. The songs on their debut album balance gently between forgotten pop hits and broken sound experiments. In the Another Dancer universe, radios are stuck to WFMU and Soulseek is a self-conscious AI producing '80 psychedelic FM-rock. Brussels-based Another Dancer is outdated, wild at heart and elegantly shy. RIYL: Beat Happening, Stereolab, Suburban Lawns, Talk Talk, Guided By Voices.

Ant – Collection Of Sounds Vol. 2 2xLP (Rhymesayers)
Yellow colorway. Ant's production is known for its rich, textured soundscapes that blend vintage and soulful elements with deep emotional resonance. The second installment of his instrumental series, Collection Of Sounds: Vol. 2, features smooth beats, intricate sampling, and lush, jazzy layers that create an immersive atmosphere.

Anthrophobia – Going Out Swinging CD/LP (Young Ones)
Anthrophobia has been bringing their eclectic fusion of rock, punk, and metal to the masses for decades (minus a seven-year hiatus). Since reuniting in 2015, the band has had four releases. Going Out Swinging is their newest offering.

Body Count – Merciless CD/2xCD/LP (Century Media)
The pioneering rap metal band Body Count returns with their much-anticipated 8th album. Ice-T and his crew unleash their energy more than ever on the rage-filled 12-track record, Merciless. After persevering through personal tragedies, social opposition, and an army of naysayers, the group emerges bloody but unbroken-and with more rage than ever. "It's really about that point where you can't take any more and you're done," shares Ice-T about the album. With guest appearances by George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher (Cannibal Corpse), Joe Bad (Fit For An Autopsy), and Max Cavalera (Soulfly), Merciless offers enough firepower. [Indie store exclusive 'Cold Blooded' blue color vinyl pressing.]

Badiaa Bouhrizi - KahruMusiqa LP (Akuphone)
KahruMusiqa is a musical retrospective by Tunisian singer and composer Badiâa Bouhrizi AKA Neysatu. She is known as the author behind the protest songs that became the anthems of the Tunisian revolution. "KahruMusiqa" means "electronic music," but is never used as such in Arabic to name the genre. The record is a collection of sonic experimentations that started when Badiâa first got her hands on music production software in the 2000s. The tracks are based around poems in classical Arabic language or Tunisian dialect written by Badiâa herself or female poets she admires, such as Palestinian authors Fadwa Tuqan or Salma Al Jayusi, or the Tunisian poet Noureddine Werghi. She also questions the political contract that led to Balfour and the displacement of millions of Palestinians in 1948, describing a journey between London and Nablus, in "Fil Madinatil harima" ("In The Old City").

Grace Bowers & the Hodge Podge - Wine on Venus LP (Grace Bowers Music)
Produced by John Osborne (Brothers Osborne), Wine On Venus captures the one-of-a-kind energy of Grace Bowers’ live performances with The Hodge Podge. The record features Bowers on guitar, Joshua Blaylock on keys, Brandon Combs on drums, Eric Fortaleza on bass , Prince Parker on guitar, and Esther Okai-Tetteh provides vocals. Songwriting collaborators include Ben Chapman, Meg McRee, Maggie Rose and Lucie Silvas. Garden & Gun declares, “Phenom Grace Bowers is poised for six-string stardom,” while Forbes praises, “an infectious, joyous party and a worthy introduction to Bowers,” and The Bluegrass Situation proclaims, “an exceptional breakout talent who seems primed for a long career to come.”

Boyscott – Spellbound LP+MP3 (Topshelf)
Recently released on CD and cassette, now available on vinyl. Spellbound continues what Boyscott started with Goose Bumps, honing their pristinely arranged indie pop morsels into a fully realized sound that vindicates the near ten-year wait. Green w/ yellow colorway.

Zach Bryan – The Great American Bar Scene CD/2xLP (WB)
“On The Great American Bar Scene, his fifth album in as many years within a steady stream of EP’s, singles and live albums, Zach Bryan continues to uphold the community he values above all. He colors his lyrics with references to songs by Tyler Childers and Johnny Cash; brings in the young Canadian troubadour Noeline Hofmann to share vocals on her ballad ‘Purple Gas’; and gives guest slots to not only John Mayer (predictable) but his fellow Oklahoman and songwriter’s songwriter John Moreland. Often a lonely voice within his own tales of botched romance and anomie, as a performer, Bryan shares space to make the point that legacies only grow through cross-pollination. And on Bar Scene, one influence-turned-friend casts a benign shadow on all the rest: the Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.” – NPR

Kim Deal – Nobody Loves You More CD/LP (4AD)
Nobody Loves You More is Kim Deal's debut album, although it's technically not her first release under her own name - she self-released a 5-part, 10-song 7" vinyl series in 2013, and beyond that, she's earned her stripes as early as the late ‘80s with bands Pixies and The Breeders. Sonically versatile and infectious, the record is a celebration of Deal's unmatched artistry, nodding not only to her career highlights with celebrated bands across the alternative landscape, but also to her immovable cultural weight, including her impact on current young musicians such Olivia Rodrigo (Deal and The Breeders supported her Guts World Tour this year).  [Indie store exclusive orange color vinyl pressing.]

Dean and Britta / Sonic Boom – A Peace Of Us LP (Carpark)
Indie store exclusive emerald colorway. In a season where we all seek comfort, tradition, and a return to a home of sorts, a trio composed of indie music’s foundational members have gifted us A Peace of Us - an album of diverse holiday tunes filtered through their musical imaginations. Dean and Britta, well-known from their work defining a genre with Galaxie 500 and Luna, join Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, another bastion of indie’s collective adolescence, to bring to life a collection that draws from early ‘60s pop, garage, country, James Bond soundtracks, Christmas carols, and electronica. Dean Wareham recalls a sentiment from his DJ friend Chris: “You can experience all the emotions of Christmas through music: love and hate, joy and heartache, nostalgia, regret, anticipation, and frustration.”

Defeated Sanity – Chronicles Of Lunacy CD/LP (Season Of Mist)
The underground has always lost their minds over Defeated Sanity, but when the band were thinking about their seventh album, the idea was to go easy on the brainteasers and get back to snapping necks. Chronicles of Lunacy isn’t exactly Defeated Sanity for dummies Whether he’s hammering blast beats or springing between crash cymbals, founding member Lille Gruber never stops changing tempos during lead single “The Odour of Sanctity”. But this album does draw a jagged red line back to the band’s brutal origins. “Accelerate the Rot” now stands as the fastest ass-beater in their canon. On Chronicles Of Lunacy, Defeated Sanity return to brutality.

Doechii – Alligator Bites Never Heal LP (Top Dawg Entertainment/Capitol)
Translucent hazel colorway. With Doechii’s new mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, rapper, singer and visionary artist Doechii delivers 19 tracks following the weekly ‘Swamp Session’ installments that lit the internet on fire with eye-catching visuals and equally compelling bars. The project captures a rare talent in her rawest form yet giving listeners 19 distinct windows into her one-of-a-kind artistry.

Father John Misty – Mahashmashana CD/LP (Sub Pop)
After a decade being born, Josh Tillman is finally busy dying. Mahashmashana is the sixth album by Father John Misty.  It was produced by Josh Tillman and Drew Erickson. It was engineered and additionally produced by Michael Harris.  It was arranged by Drew Erickson.  It was performed by Josh Tillman, Drew Erickson, Jonathan Wilson, Dan Bailey, Eli Thomson, David Vandervelde, Chris Dixie Darley, Jon Titterington, and Kyle Flynn.  It was executive produced by Jonathan Wilson. It was recorded and mixed at Five Star and East/West , United and Drew's House. Mahasmasana - great cremation ground, all things going thither. [Blue mash-up color vinyl pressing.]

Roy Hargrove’s Crisol – Grande-Terre CD/LP (Verve)
In April of 1998, fresh off their Grammy win for Best Latin Jazz Performance for their debut effort, Habana, Roy Hargrove's Crisol went into a studio in Guadalupe to record their follow-up album. Until now, that album, Grande-Terre, has never been heard. Featuring an all-star band of Roy's long-time collaborators, Grande-Terre showcases Hargrove's fiery playing, his exquisite writing and the band's incredible power and unique sound.

Hett - Candor 12" (Awkwardly Social)
In what feels almost like an annual autumn tradition now, Awkwardly Social is excited to announce the next release on the label, Candor by Hett. Having known about his excellent production skills for a while, the label was quite eager to unearth this hidden gem. It took a moment to put together but everyone's patience paid off with this beautiful five-track record. The Wearside-raised and Berlin-based artist provides the perfect formula for a club ready yet emotively aware package, making it hard to believe that this is only his debut EP. A work of music that embodies the refreshing candor of a forward-thinking attitude whilst also giving a respectful nod to the past.

Larry June – Doing It For Me LP (The Freeminded Recs)
Picture disc pressing. After dominating 2023 with two joint albums from two of hip-hop's biggest producers in The Alchemist (The Great Escape) & Cardo (The Night Shift), Larry June is back with his first full length offering of 2024, Doing It For Me. Going back to his roots of what made him the type of man he is today and the formula that initially brought him success, the album contains no features and focuses on Larry doing things his way, for himself. From enlightening listeners on how to move like a boss and live a healthy lifestyle, to flashing what his hard work has brought, fans are sure to be able to soak up some game on how to improve their own situations.

Killer Mike – Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival: Songs for Sinners and Saints CD/LP (Loma Vista Recordings)
Michael & The Mighty Midnight Revival - Songs for Sinners and Saints, a 10-song collection (including “HUMBLE ME”) that provides a bookend to the 3-time GRAMMY-winning MICHAEL era and puts the speculation about the aftermath of February 4 to bed. A tumultuous period that opened up fertile ground for Mike’s creativity. He states "This is the epilogue to MICHAEL. This is what comes after Feb 4. I had a year to live with MICHAEL and realized I had more I wanted to do with this sound before moving on." [Indie store exclusive translucent ruby red color vinyl pressing.]

Michael Kiwanuka – Small Changes CD/LP (Geffen)

[Indie store exclusive green marble color vinyl pressing.]

Opeth – The Last Will And Testament CD/CD+Blu-ray/2xLP/Cassette (Reigning Phoenix Music America)
“A haunting post-WWI concept album that explores themes of betrayal, heritage and identity, and a sound that sees Opeth both return to their metal roots, while simultaneously reaching new territory. For some, The Last Will And Testament may be a divisive record. In one aspect, it sees the band pay homage to their grittier roots after an extensive hiatus, yet in another, it is one that pushes the envelope beyond what is expected – even by Opeth’s standards.” – Guitar.com [Indie exclusive 'rough seas' vinyl.]

Marysia Osu – harp, beats & dreams LP (Brownswood)
Brownswood Recordings are proud to present their latest signing, the immensely talented harpist and composer Marysia Osu. A key member of Levitation Orchestra, and graduate of Brownswood's heralded 'Bubblers' academy - Marysia now prepares to unveil her alluring and transcendent debut album harp, beats & dreams.

Papa M – Ballads Of Harry Houdini LP (Drag City)
Orange colorway includes poster. The “Great Escape Artist” is back! No, not THAT one – dude’s dead! We’re talking about Papa M. And HE’s talking ‘bout Harry Houdini – in the album title, anyway, not sure about anywhere else. So, six years since his last LP, the all-acoustic A Broke Moon Rises, Papa M rolls into the shred zone, buns glazing, with his fifth full length in 25 years of Papa M-itude! Six fat-assed songs – a couple ballads, yeah, but mostly real all-out groovers here.

Jeff Parker & ETA IVtet – The Way Out Of Easy CD/2xLP (Nonesuch)
January 2nd, 2023. Aside from being the second of a new year, it was a pretty ordinary night at ETA in Los Angeles, where guitarist Jeff Parker - alongside his ETA IVtet with saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose - had been holding down a regular Monday gig since 2016. At the time, nobody knew it was the first gig of the last year that ETA would be open for business. Over seven years of holding down that residency, Parker's ETA ensemble evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form (sometimes stretching out for 45 minutes or more) journeys into innovative, often uncharted territories of groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist and mantric improvised music.

Peel Dream Magazine – Rose Main Reading Room LP (Topshelf)
Bone white colorway. Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) "cool" — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop, and their newest work is a perfect starting point for the uninitiated, beckoning toward a newfound romance and nostalgia with their catchiest collection of songs to date.

Seven Hours After Violet – Seven Hours After Violet CD/LP (Sumerian)
New project from Shavo Odadjian, bassist of System of A Down. [Violet color vinyl pressing.]

The Smashing Pumpkins – Aghori Mhori Mei CD/LP (Martha’s Music 2)
A bruising and shadowy return to form from original Smashing Pumpkins members Jimmy Chamberlin, James Iha, and Billy Corgan. Recorded in the immediate aftermath of their 33-song concept album, Atum, Aghori Mhori Mei harkens back to the band’s early ‘90s canon; where guitars, bass, drums, and spiking vocals ruled.

Various Artists – Wicked The Soundtrack CD/2xLP (Republic)
Wicked: The Soundtrack features performances by the stars of Universal Pictures’ new cinematic event, Wicked, with music and lyrics by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The soundtrack includes songs performed by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winning powerhouse and Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda.

Yesness – See You At The Solipsist Convention LP (Joyful Noise)
Green colorway. Even as the obstacles to meaningful connection mount into an Everest-ian hurdle, artists nevertheless find ways to bend the technologies of our days to foster visceral human connection, rather than bereft isolation. Comprised of a West Coast bassist (Kristian Dunn of El Ten Eleven) and an Appalachia-adjacent drummer (Damon Che of Don Caballero), Yesness forges a friendship mediated through the language of collaboration, all formed through emailed song sketches and text exchanges of Van Halen demos.

Bill Callahan – The Holy Grail: Bill Callahan’s “Smog” Dec. 10, 2001 Peel Session LP (Drag City)
December 2001, Maida Vale: Bill Callahan’s “Smog” perform with demonstrative zeal for their British witness at the BBC, shimmering and hissing with a Lynchian vibe of U.S. darkness in the invariable shadows of the fallen towers. Callahan and band (Jessica Billey, Mike Saenz and Jim White) cover Stevie Nicks, Lou Reed and Smog with grey, ashen resolve and tour-torn flexibility, amassing a bruised, plaintive essence of humanity with their efforts.

Ray And His Court – Ray And His Court [Reissue/1973] CD/LP (Mr Bongo)
Latin funk at its finest. A kingpin player of Miami's Cuban music scene, Ray Fernandez, brought together his 'court' for this sensational Afro-Cuban funk triumph. Largely a family affair, the album features his wife, two sons and a range of other talented musicians including Rickey Washington on saxophone, father of the contemporary jazz maestro Kamasi Washington. Originally released in 1973 on Manuel J. Mato's iconic and collectible Sound Triangle Records, Ray And His Court is a dose of Miami heat fueled by a Cuban fire, taking in salsa, soul, funk, calypso and Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Velvet Turner Group – Velvet Turner Group [Reissue/1972] LP (Org Music)
Velvert Turner is largely known for being a protégé and student of Jimi Hendrix, who he met as a teenager in New York in the late '60s. The influence is immediately clear, with respect to both Turner's guitar work and vocals. Some have even mistaken his only album for a "lost" Hendrix recording. Velvert Turner Group's self-titled 1972 release, which aptly closes with a tribute to Hendrix (a cover of "Freedom"), is now back on vinyl, remastered by Dave Gardner. This reissue features an alternate mix of the first song, "Madonna (of the Seven Moons)", as a bonus track.
