Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Bambara - Birthmarks LP (Wharf Cat)

Produced by Graham Sutton (Bark Psychosis, These New Puritans) and Bambara, Birthmarks is New York band Bambara's fifth, and best, studio album. A wild, musically adventurous suite of songs that follows a host of lost characters caught in a multi-generational cycle of love, violence and rebirth. Recorded in the UK and the band's NYC studio, Birthmark shows the band exploring new musical territory with even more focus on production and atmosphere while maintaining the noir core of what they've perfected since their debut. The album features a wide range of instrumentation, with vocal contributions from friends Emma Acs (Crack Cloud), Bria Salmena, Madeline Johnston (Midwife), sax by Jeff Tobias (A. Savage), harp by Marilu Donavon (LEYA) and more. World-building both lyrically and sonically has always been Bambara's specialty, and with Birthmarks the world has never felt so vast.

Jason Boland & The Stragglers - The Last Kings of Babylon CD (Proud Souls)

25 years doing anything is nothing to scoff at, especially when it's the hardscrabble business of music. Neither is being one of the true originators of Red Dirt music like Jason Boland and the Stragglers. Since 1998, they've been defying odds, helping to define the indefinable sound of Red Dirt, and doing it without the aid of Nashville. Now Jason Boland releases the 11th album in his arsenal, The Last Kings of Babylon. To produce the album, Boland and the boys returned to where it all began with legendary Texas/Red Dirt producer Lloyd Maines who also produced the band's debut.

Circuit des Yeux - Halo on the Inside CD/LP (Matador)

Last fall, when Circuit des Yeux (aka CdY, aka Haley Fohr) released the stand-alone single “God Dick,” she described the song as a passage leading from the past toward things to come. “It served a chrysalis function,” she wrote of the track, which morphs between orchestral grandeur and shuddering electronic percussion. Leaning in deeper, Fohr called it, “A love banshee bursting through porcelain skin one hair at a time until, finally, the beast within is fully on display.” Halo on the Inside is the product of that metamorphosis. It is the butterfly and the beast – a rhapsodic, hedonistic, dance floor-adjacent, pagan-friendly, horns-adorning wall of sound and emotion. Halo on the Inside finds CdY renewed, recombinant, and thrillingly alien.

Nels Cline - Consentrik Quartet CD/2xLP (Blue Note)

Guitarist, sonic explorer, and Wilco bandmember Nels Cline presents the debut recording by his Consentrik Quartet, featuring Ingrid Laubrock on saxophones, Chris Lightcap on bass, and Tom Rainey on drums. Cline's fourth Blue Note album, Consentrik Quartet, features 12 evocative and far-ranging soundscapes composed by Cline. [Indie exclusive 2 LP set on 180gram heavy vinyl with signed insert.]

Clipping - Dead Channel Sky 2xLP (Sub Pop)

Because of their mix of hellified gangster shit and progressive compositions, I once jokingly called Clipping "Deathrow Tull." Well, it's not a joke anymore. While Clipping's last few projects have been record-long concepts like classic prog rock, their cyberpunk-infused new album Dead Channel Sky is mixtape-like, a carefully curated collection in which every track is a love letter to a possible present. It sounds crisp and classic at the same time. When something strikes us as retrospective and futuristic at the same time, it's a reminder of how slipshod our present moment truly is. [Indie exclusive ghostly green vinyl.]

Coheed & Cambria - The Father of Make Believe CD/2xLP (Coheed & Cambria)

The new full-length marks the 10th studio album from the New York band and continues the narrative of The Amory Wars / Vaxis universe, following their 2022 album, Vaxis Act II: A Window of the Waking Mind. [Indie exclusive 2 LP set on translucent light blue vinyl.]

Charley Crockett - Lonesome Drifter CD/LP (Island)

Lonesome Drifter is the new album from GRAMMY Award-nominated artist Charley Crockett. Crockett co-produced the album alongside multi-GRAMMY Award-winning musician and producer Shooter Jennings. Over the course of just 10 days, they cut 12 tracks live at the legendary Sunset Sound in Los Angeles. Crockett’s Island Records debut is a culmination of all that has come before, with the same unapologetic spirit, die-hard work ethic, and no nonsense honesty that has driven his artistry across his 14 previous studio albums. In the end, Lonesome Drifter takes stock of Charley’s road in the rearview as it paves a path into the future.

Alabaster Deplume - A Blade Because A Blade Is Whole CD/LP (International Anthem)

On dignity, sovereignty and the work of healing, this is Alabaster's latest album. "A blade, because a blade is whole, it has forgiven itself, and because it will take a small piece of our opposite, for us to be complete. A blade has marked out these former selves on my hand, a blade divides me from the rest of this universe, and marks out myself, makes me one, while I live. A blade. While I forgive myself, and heal, and lead us in healing. We can only forgive each other once we have forgiven ourselves." Composed, Produced and Arranged by Alabaster DePlume and recorded to analogue tape at Total Refreshment Centre.

Dorothy - The Way CD/LP/Cassette (Roc Nation)

Projecting a full-bodied voice with every inch of her being, Dorothy Martin kindles a spark of hope into a fame as bright as the sun itself. The Budapest, Hungary-born maverick singer, songwriter, performer, and frontwoman of the Los Angeles-based eponymous band DOROTHY brings gusto, grit, and glory back to hard rock, exuding superstar- size confidence coupled with the quiet resolve of an old school Western anti-hero. She has unassumingly blazed her own trail with sold-out tours, major collaborations, and over 1 billion streams already in the rearview. Now, her vision really catches fire on the group's fourth full-length album, THE WAY.

Neal Francis - Return To Zero CD/LP (ATO Records)

Acclaimed singer-songwriter-pianist Neal Francis is ringing in the new year with his eagerly anticipated third studio album, Return To Zero. Francis' first full-length studio effort in more than three years and most extravagantly realized work so far, Return To Zero sees the Chicago-based singer-songwriter-pianist creating a beautifully strange entangling of timeless rock 'n' roll and '70s-era dance music. Merging supremely heavy guitar riffs with lush and pulsating grooves, Francis constructed the album sans digital programming in keeping with his long-standing devotion to all things analog. The album is heralded by today's premiere of the gorgeously sprawling power pop anthem, "What's Left Of Me," available everywhere now. A piercingly candid reflection on life on the road co-written with chart-topping Nashville-based songwriter Chris Gelbuda (Sabrina Carpenter, Meghan Trainor, Zac Brown Band). [Limited edition cobalt blue vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]

Boldy James & Harry Fraud - The Bricktionary LP (SRFSCHL)

The first full-length collaborative album from Boldy James & Harry Fraud, with guest appearances from BabyFace Ray, Benny The Butcher, and Tee Grizzley. While both artists have been consistently releasing albums over the years, fans of Bo Jack & La Musica have been waiting for this one and they will not be disappointed by the music or artwork of The Bricktionary on vinyl. “Arriving like a victory lap, the grandeur of Fraud’s production provides an intoxicating foil to Boldy’s steely honesty and delivery”....“Boldy and Fraud’s technical brilliance on The Bricktionary is direct and precise, not overcomplicated, and it allows their respective production and writing styles to fit like puzzle pieces. This kind of no-frills approach leans on intrinsic quality and dependability, not on bells and whistles, and leaps into the stratosphere.

Emile Mosseri - Tryin’ To Be Born LP (Greedy Heart Records)

As a singer, songwriter, and composer, Emile Mosseri transforms the human experience into song. Musical storytelling is his lifeblood-a talent he has shared with songwriters and directors, scoring such films as Minari & The Last Black Man in San Francisco -and has recently taken center stage in his work as a performing artist. Backed by a band composed of Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Dougie Stu, and Kosta Galanopolous, Mosseri retreated to Altamira Sound in the fall of 2023 with frequent collaborator, composer, and producer Bobby Krlic (Midsommar, The Haxan Cloak) to lay the groundwork for his sophomore album, tryin to be born.

Oklou - Choke Enough LP (True Panther)

Choke enough, the full-length studio debut from French artist Oklou, is a patient, masterful execution of ephemeral soft club electronic and texturally alluring indie pop. Features Bladee, underscores, with production from Danny L Harle, A. G. Cook, Nick León, and more. Her critically acclaimed mixtape, Galore, led her on tours with Caroline Polachek, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Sampha, before being coined "a taste of the future of pop music" by NME.

The Rabies - Dumb It Down LP (Presidential)

All new recordings from the Reagan-era power pop / punk band, The Rabies. Their first full-length LP.

Rwake - The Return of Magik CD/2xLP (Relapse)

Rwake reemerge with The Return of Magik - an emotionally engrossing journey through the lens of ethereal sludge/doom, and progressive metal that ventures beyond the confines of any genre. [Limited edition bronze nugget color vinyl.]

Throwing Muses - Moonlight Concessions LP (Fire Records)

‘Moonlight Concessions’ goes back to basics, a return for Throwing Muses to their esoteric off-kilter best courtesy of Kristin’s pin-sharp sketches and their suitably abrasive musical arrangements. The album follows their acclaimed ‘Sun Racket’ from 2020, a heady set filled with tough and tender tales spiked with surreal imagery. Produced by Kristin Hersh at Steve Rizzo's Stable Sound Studio in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, ‘Moonlight Concessions’ is a collection of snippets from everyday life writ large - think Raymond Carver Short Cuts, overheard conversations, recounted happenings and telling one-liners, all sewed together to illustrate the times as they slowly mature, fully peppered with original Muses’ vim and vigour.

Tyla - Tyla+ 2xLP (Epic)

After an amazing summer of festival performances, and award shows, Tyla is back with a deluxe vinyl version of her debut album, TYLA. TYLA + includes 3 new tracks. [Limited edition translucent orange with red swirl vinyl.]

Gregory Uhlmann, Josh Johnson, Sam Wilkes - Uhlmann Johnson Wilkes CD/LP (International Anthem)

'Uhlmann Johnson Wilkes' is the debut album from Gregory Uhlmann (SML, Anna Butterss, Duffy x Uhlmann, Perfume Genius), Josh Johnson (SML, Jeff Parker ETA IVtet & New Breed, Meshell Ndegeocello, Anna Butterss, Leon Bridges), and Sam Wilkes (Sam Gendel, Louis Cole, Chaka Khan). The three improviser/arranger/producers’ impressive individual credits encompass such a wide stylistic pendulum swing that a collection of group music from the trio could mine any number of musical territories with masterful results. In these 11 instrumental songs, the trio explores a spacious lyrical curiosity that could be described as a jazz-informed take on progressive electro-acoustic chamber music.

ZZ Ward - Liberation LP (Sun)

Blues artist ZZ Ward's album, Liberation, celebrates her love of all things blues. Her third release on Sun Records, features originals like "Mother," a song about her new role as a working mother, with covers of classics like Son House's "Grinnin' In Your Face." ZZ's bold vocals also shine on her take on songs from the historic Sun catalog, like The Jesters' "Cadillac Man," and Alvin Robinson's "Something You Got." [Indie exclusive psychedelic wave color vinyl.]

Whatever The Weather - Whatever The Weather II LP (Ghostly Int’l)

Across a remarkable run of releases in barely half a decade, London's Loraine James has established her identity through a blend of refined composition, gritty experimentation, and unpredictable, intricate electronic programming. While titles released under her given name on Hyperdub tend toward IDM-influenced, vocal-heavy collaborations, James reserves her Ghostly International-signed alias, Whatever the Weather, for an inward gaze that explores innate "emotional temperature" and environment (shown in degree-based track titling). Her second full-length is a markedly warmer outing compared to it's predecessor, as signaled by the shift from LP1's arctic cover photo to LP2's desert climes. Common to both albums is the mastering work of friend and collaborator Josh Eustis (aka Telefon Tel Aviv), who lends his keen ear to James' complexities to craft a strikingly three-dimensional sonic experience. Flowing from hypnotic atmospheres to mottled rhythms to processed collages of diaristic field recordings, Whatever the Weather II is a compelling union of organic and human elements from one of electronic music's most imaginative talents. [Limited edition dark green vinyl.]

Steven Wilson - The Overview LP (Fiction)

Steven Wilson releases his eighth studio album, The Overview, on Fiction Records. Two tracks, 42 minutes, wildly ambitious and brilliantly audacious in equal measure, the album features endlessly engaging conceptual lyrics that move seamlessly between the cosmic and the quotidian, set to genre-defying, ultra melodic music... it promises to be an utterly unique release in 2025. [Indie exclusive mint green 180g vinyl mastered at half speed.]

Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek CD/LP (Big Crown)

Big Crown Records is proud to present Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek's latest album Yarın Yoksa. The show stopping intensity of Derya backed by the psychedelic soul of Grup Şimşek with production by Leon Michels has yielded a stand out record that challenges genre with a broad appeal and a powerful message. They refer to themselves as "outernational" over international as they say it suggests a sound that's more inclusive or "beyond borders." Derya, who sings and plays the bağlama, is German born to Turkish parents. Drummer Helen Wells is Berlin-based by way of South Africa while keyboard player Graham Mushnik and guitar/bass player Antonin Voyant are both French. The collective influences they bring to Anatolian music make for a completely unique and fresh sound that both pushes the genre forward and champions it's rich heritage.

Warren Zeiders - Relapse, Lies & Betrayal LP (Warner Records)

Warren Zeiders went from daily hours on the lacrosse field to headlining sold out arenas in less than three years, and now, the 25-year-old Pennsylvania native is set to release his album"Relapse, Lies, & Betrayal”. Produced by Zeiders, Ross Copperman, and Mike Elizondo. The two-part, 20-track album delves into themes of heartbreak, personal growth, and emotional healing - all-encompassing the mental roller coaster Zeiders experienced as his life and career changed rapidly in his early twenties. Through both familiar and new collaborations, the album highlights Zeiders' evolution. It is made to make you feel, offering a cathartic exploration of love, loss, and gratitude for meaningful connections. The record will kick off a momentum-bound year for Zeiders, with many of his US and overseas headline tour already sold out.

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

Axel Boman - Le New Life 2LP (Mule Musiq)

2025 repress. Originally released in 2019 for Mule Musiq's 15-year anniversary. First track, "Chestnut Hearts" is a super emotional, no-beat, club banger that Axel played at his latest Boiler Room. "Slave To The Vibe" is slow-mo, cosmic tune. "Paid By The Rhythm" is Axel's signature floating house, while "Copacabana Dub" is epic Brazilian affair, a deep house anthem. "Don't Bug Me" is dubby rasta tune and "Konoba Boba" is a little bit reminiscent of the early Border Community sound.

Marion Brown - Vista LP (Verve)

Saxophonist Marion Brown ended his '70s stint at Impulse! Records with this serene and colorful album. It features drummer Ed Blackwell and bassist Reggie Workman, with Stanley Cowell on acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes. Brown wrote the blissful "Vista," and the five other compositions are well-chosen, starting with an inviting version of Cowell's "Maimoun" and an impressionistic, deeply meditative take on Stevie Wonder's "Visions." Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Jaki Byard - Blues for Smoke LP (Candid)

The debut recording from one of jazz music's most revered pianists! "Byard is absolutely brilliant...highly recommended." - All Music Originally recorded in 1960, briefly released in Japan in the early ’70s, it wasn’t until 1988 that Jaki Byard’s solo debut, Blues For Smoke, was widely released. Even then it was more of a secret handshake among fans than the catalog cornerstone it should have always been. Now, Candid has finally created the definitive edition of this lost masterpiece for all to experience. Byard backed generations of jazz icons, including Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Roland Kirk, and Quincy Jones. As a bandleader and soloist, he went on to build his own catalog of iconic recordings across three decades while establishing himself as an educator and mentor to the next generation of artists, most notably, Grayson Hugh, Fred Hersch, and Jason Moran. Blues For Smoke is where it all began. Recorded as a solo-piano showcase for Byard’s incredible gifts as a player, composer, and jazz historian, the exquisitely engineered session is given new life by Bernie Grundman’s sensitive remastering. With this release, Candid is hoping to make Jaki Byard’s very first album the rosetta-stone of jazz piano it was intended to be.

Deee-Lite - Dewdrops in the Garden 2LP (Get On Down)

When one makes mention of Deee-Lite, the 90's house-funk trio of Lady Miss Kier, and DJs Dmitry and Towa Tei, invariably their Billboard smash single “Groove Is In The Heart” will come up, and for good reason. With its Herbie Hancock-sampling bassline, some classic rhymes from Q-Tip, and guest vocals by Parliament-Funkadelic legend Bootsy Collins, the song became an indelible classic of 90s music and a massive commercial hit for the group, and is now widely considered one of the greatest dance songs of all time. Rather than deliver more of the same free-wheeling, breezy dance music of World Clique, Deee-Lite took a more politically-minded approach with their second album, building on frontwoman Lady Miss Kier's history of political activism prior to forming the group. Despite spawning some Dance chart hits,1992's Infinity Within was not as commercially or critically lauded as its forebear, but Deee-Lite were undaunted by their change in commercial fortune. With junglist DJ Ani replacing Towa Tei on their third record, 1994's Dewdrops In The Garden struck a remarkable balance between the celebratory grooves of World Clique and the social justice-driven Infinity Within. Regrettably, Dewdrops In The Garden was not a commercial success, yet it still managed to render its share of #1 Dance chart singles; the atmospheric techno bounciness of “Bring Me Your Love”, and the spacious funk-house track “Call Me.” Though Deee-Lite would disband soon after Dewdrops In The Garden's release, the record remains an unheralded favorite among dance music devotees for its coupling of infectiously bright, soulful melodies with banging dance-floor grooves and unshakably optimistic vibes.

Drug Church - Cheer LP (Pure Noise)

Limited red and black colored vinyl LP pressing. Cheer is the third studio album by American post-hardcore band Drug Church, from 2018.

Essential Logic - Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?) CD/2xLP (Hiss & Shake Records)

UK punk band X-Ray Spex co-founder Lora Logic was unexpectedly ousted before the recording of their debut album 'Germ Free Adolescents' in 1977. Undeterred, Lora went on to form and front the post-punk band Essential Logic. With trademark angular sax lines and her unmistakable vocal stylings, she went on to create some of the most liberating and exciting music of the early post-punk era, not only as Essential Logic, but also as a solo artist. 'Beat Rhythm News (Waddle Ya Play?)' is the band's debut studio album. Lora's solo album 'Pedigree Charm' followed in 1982. This 45th Anniversary 'Deluxe' edition compiles the original studio album together with a bonus album containing the complete Essential Logic studio recordings from 1978 - 1983, including the iconic Cells Records debut single 'Aerosol Burns' (1978), the 'Wake Up' EP (1979), included here for the first time on any physical release since it's original pressing, together with the non-album b-side 'Flora Force' and 3 post album Rough Trade Records single releases: 'Eugene' (1980), 1981's 'Music Is A Better Noise' and 'Fanfare In The Garden', and their respective b-sides.

The Faint - Blank-Wave Arcade 2xLP (Saddle Creek)
The Faint - Wet From Birth 2xLP (Saddle Creek)

Nancy Harrow - Wild Women Don’t Have the Blues CD/LP (Candid)

The legendary vocalist's debut album! "A 100% must for my record of the year" - Jazz Journal Review Remastered by multiple Grammy winner Michael Graves. Vinyl mastering by Jeff Powell. The fist time Candid founder Nat Hentoff heard Harrow sing, he decided on the spot that if he were to ever have a label of his own, he would have to cut a record with her. Both of his dreams came true, resulting in a jazz vocal album as easily appealing as anything you’re likely to hear. Despite its accessibility, it’s also a showcase for Harrow’s utterly unique style. One of the few vocalists of her generation that didn’t emulate the voices of the icons that came before her. When the Washington Post reviewed this album, they got so much right about Wild Women Don’t Have The Blues and Nancy Harrow herself: “She sings for the sheer fun of it - not to be glamorous, not to knock our musicians, but just because she’s got a feeling she wants to get across. Repeated hearings bear this out - her long, strong phrases; the ironic power of her understated emotions; the stripped, supple timbre of her voice, straight as a clipper’s keel. And I say we’ve got a rare thing here - a woman who has made grand what’s common to us all. I think that’s what they call art.” After this album, Harrow went on a 12-year hiatus to raise her children (one of which is Galaxie 500’s Damon Krukowski) before re-emerging to even greater acclaim on the jazz scene. This reissue finally gives her debut the shot it always deserved to find its way into the collections of aficionados and casual listeners alike.

Haruomi Hosono - Medicine Compilation from the Quiet Lodge 2LP (Victory)

Originally released in 1993. Medicine Compilation from the Quiet Lodge features ultimate ambient music that invites listeners to another world, including masterpieces such as "Honey Moon," which has a duo vocal with Akiko Yano, and was originally recorded on the album Tropical Dandy and the funky "Aiwoiwaiaou" with lively singing voices. (AAA) lacquers cut from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QRP complete with a tip-on jacket. Bluesville Acoustic Sounds series.

Lonnie Johnson - Blues & Ballads LP (Craft Recordings)

Blues & Ballads is Lonnie Johnson's third album, originally released in 1960. The diverse offering of originals and covers demonstrates Johnson's versatility on guitar and vocals. Johnson is joined by his contemporaries Elmer Snowden and Wendell Marshall on this recording. AllMusic declared Johnson "effortlessly [reveals] his artistic range." (AAA) lacquers cut from the original tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at QRP. A replica tip-on jacket completes the package. Bluesville Acoustic Sounds series.

Memphis Slim - Memphis Slim, USA CD/LP (Candid)

An intimate recording from the Blues hall-of-famer that puts you in the room with 3 Blues legends! Remastered by multiple Grammy winner Michael Graves. Vinyl mastering by Jeff Powell. One of Candid’s historic blues releases, Memphis Slim, U.S.A. finds the Blues Hall Of Fame inductee in a rare, relaxed setting with two close friends and fellow blues icons, Jazz Gillum and Arbee Stidham. The intimacy—from their loose interplay and improvisation to the eerie realism of the recording—is palpable and feels more like an invitation to their inner circle than a commercial release. Grammy-winner Michael Graves’ sensitive remastering brings Memphis Slim, U.S.A. to life, letting listeners in as the piano legend and his buddies offer a musical history of the blues from its Southern juke-joint roots up to its Chicago-style move toward R&B. Memphis Slim, U.S.A. is an essential document that Candid is proud to bring back to the blues canon.

Scratch Acid - Scratch Acid Box Set 4xLP (Touch & Go)
Scratch Acid - s/t + Berserker LP (Touch & Go)
Scratch Acid - Just Keep Eating LP (Touch & Go)

Born out of the early 1980's Austin noise punk scene, Scratch Acid deliberately eschewed the loud, fast rules of hardcore as everything they didn't want to be and embraced a weirder, artier sound. Prior to the release of their 1984 debut S/T EP, someone gave Touch and Go Records owner Corey Rusk a cassette of the recording, and he was instantly a huge fan. Rusk was immediately interested in releasing the EP and contacted the band to express his admiration. At the time, Scratch Acid had already committed to working with Rabid Cat Records, who released the band's debut release S/T EP (1984) and their only full-length album, Just Keep Eating (1986). The group quickly developed a riveting performance aesthetic, and, as the debut S/T EP made it's way around the country via fanzines, college radio, and word-of-mouth, the band mounted short tours to the Midwest and the East Coast. After playing a total of 146 shows, Scratch Acid broke up after the long tour that followed the release of the Berserker EP (Touch and Go Records, 1987). Since that time, the band have had many imitators, and many alternative bands have cited Scratch Acid as one of their influences. [Entire catalog included in ‘box’ or on 2 individual LPs, one collecting their 2 EPs, the other their one and only full length, all on color vinyl.]

Archie Shepp - The Magic of Ju-Ju LP (Verve)

Opening with the 18-minute track of the same name, Archie Shepp's The Magic of Ju-Ju takes on a fevered pace as the centerpiece of this date from 1968. Shepp let's loose from the beginning, as he's joined by Beaver Harris, Norman Connor, Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles and Dennis Charles. The initial pace never dissipates throughout the length of the title track. The rest of the music on The Magic of Ju-Ju is a departure from the first track, sitting in a more traditional realm. The album is a valuable snapshot in time, highlighting Archie Shepp's contribution to the space of spiritual and free jazz. Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.

Sun Ra & His Myth Science Arkestra - When Angels Speak of Love LP (Cosmic Myth Records)

One of a number of sessions cut at the Choreographers' Workshop, this 1963 set established Sun Ra's Arkestra as a New York band, sonically coupled to developments in the decidedly urbane downtown arts underground. The stargazing clamor of the music reflects the intensity of a cultural crossroads where concrete and dust pervade any skyward view, from East 3rd Street to Mars and beyond. One of Sun Ra's rarest releases, it had negligible circulation through records shops. While most of the Saturn output couldn't get any rarer or mysterious than it already was, 'When Angels Speak of Love' was released in 1966 it was the most elusive and mysterious in the Sun Ra catalog. It's speculated that the record was issued in two micro runs, with estimates around 150 copies. Hard core collectors around the world had been searching for this gem to no avail until Evidence Records' released a CD of the music in 2000. This updated offering utilizes the actual master tapes and we get to hear the Arkestra in it's cosmic mid-60's prime via mono and stereo fidelity.

Talk Talk - The Very Best of Talk Talk CD/2xLP (PLG UK)

With a career spanning just 10 years, Talk Talk left an everlasting impact and legacy on music with a relatively short career. Starting out as a synth-pop group, with singles like "Talk Talk" and one of the biggest songs of the 80s in "It's My Life. " Talk Talk continued to experiment and challenge themselves all along their career whilst maintaining critical success with albums such as The Colour Of Spring and Spirit Of Eden. With the latter, they went on to pioneer what then became known as post-rock and is critically acclaimed a masterpiece to this day. The Very Best Of Talk Talk is fully supported and approved by the band and Mark Hollis' estate. It is a reissue of the 1997 best of, but with a tweak to include New Grass from their last album Laughing Stock.

Vazz - Your Lungs and Your Tongues LP (Numero)

Channeling the Euro-pop sensibilities of Crepuscule and the ethereal goth of 4AD, Vazz arrived in Glasgow just as the Sound of Young Scotland was taking off. Armed with a drum machine, guitar, bass, and Anna Howson's icy cooing, the duo offered a darker take to a scene dominated by poptimists Orange Juice, Josef K, and Aztec Camera. This 40th anniversary edition of their 1986 mini-album Your Lungs and Your Tongues compiles their complete Cathexis recordings and adds a handful of unissued minimal wave pearls. World Party - Best In Show 2xLP (Seaview)

When Karl Wallinger left the Waterboys in the mid-1980s to form World Party, it took one song to convince fans that this was no side project. That song, "Ship of Fools," along with "Way Down Now," "Put the Message in the Box," "She's the One," and "Is It Like Today?" populate this first-ever worldwide release of the expanded 16-song greatest hits package, Best In Show. The collection draws from the albums Private Revolution (1987), Goodbye Jumbo (1990), Bang! (1993), Egyptology (1997), Dumbing Up (2000), and the 2012 compilation, Arkeology. [Limited edition yellow and red double vinyl.]
