Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Annie & The Caldwells - Can’t Lose My (soul) CD/LP (Luaka Bop)

Annie & The Caldwells are a family that plays a powerful disco soul from West Point, Mississippi, led by Annie Caldwell (who sings) and her husband of the last fifty years Willie Joe Caldwell, Sr. (who plays guitar). “Best soul band on the planet? Best band on the planet? I need to tell the world about them. Specifically some editor ... but after that the world … (Also is the lead backing vocalist single, I may be in love).” – David Hutcheon, MOJO

Ari Bald & CJ Scott - Humble Jumble 2x12" (Studio Barnhus)

It's been a long (and fun) time but finally Ari Bald and CJ Scott are getting the international recognition they deserve, after years of meticulously crafting their own brand of pure, guilt-free, locally sourced house music, through regular releases on a string of illustrious underground labels and, more recently, two striking EPs on their hometown label Studio Barnhus outta Stockholm, Sweden. On the dynamic duo's new Studio Barnhus release Humble Jumble, cheekiness levels and BPM counts are pushed to their limits, with ingenious sample choices and floor-friendly arrangements spread across two slabs of DJ-optimized vinyl.

Brother Ali - Satisfied Soul CD/2xLP (Mello Music)

Brother Ali's "Satisfied Soul" (his debut Mello Music Group album) is a thunderclap, a 17-track sermon where truth and vulnerability collide with legendary producer Ant's signature production. Ali wields his pen like a blade, slicing through the smoke of political despair and personal revelation, delivering wisdom with a preacher's cadence and a rebel's fire. Ant crafts a sonic mosaic of dusty drums, warm vinyl crackle, and ghostly rhythms that feel like they've been pulled from the deep pockets of America's forgotten record shops. This is thought provoking, spiritual rap, full of jagged self-reflection and unflinching critique, rooted in hope and defiance. Ali's voice weaves stories that feel more like conversations with an old friend than mere tracks. This isn't just an album-it's a movement wrapped in the spirit of resilience.

Church Tongue - You’ll Know It Was Me CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Originally known as Conquerors, Church Tongue have a stunning (but well deserved) following and near-perfect, albeit brief, discography given their relatively short time as an active band. The band returns with their new EP You’ll Know it Was Me. Boasting a blend between precise, pummeling metalcore and chaotic, unpredictable hardcore, Church Tongue’s You’ll Know it Was Me is a stunning return to the underground’s forefront, taking a threnody of terrifying riffs and explosive breakdowns just to put them in a head-on collision with carefully crafted and surreal atmosphere.

Phil Cook - Appalachia Borealis CD/LP (Psychic Hotline)

Appalachia Borealis is a deeply poignant and personal set of 11 piano meditations, built with the emotional range of a full and open existence. Inspired by windowsill improvisations with the local fauna, it reflects not only the turmoil and sadness of a fraught time for Cook but also the hope, light, and joy of looking for the other side. You can sometimes still hear the birds whose tune and time helped to inspire so many of these songs. Even when they're not within earshot, their essence remains. Produced by Justin Vernon (Bon Iver).

Cradle of Filth - The Screaming of the Valkyries LP (Napalm)

Cradle of Filth reign supreme as one of the most revered names in music for over three decades. Following Existence Is Futile (debuting at 20 on the Billboard 200 Hard Rock chart), Cradle return with The Screaming of the Valkyries. Across the album's unforgiving expanse, it harkens to ghosts of Cradle's past like Cruelty And The Beast and the galloping thunder of recent entries like Hammer Of The Witches. Dani Filth's recognizable scream stands mightily alongside twin guitar attacks, symphonic flourishes, and explosive rhythm section. The Screaming of the Valkyries beckons the brave into a new era of Cradle of Filth, as a bloody love letter to Cradle's longtime faithful and an enticing entryway for fresh lambs to the slaughter. [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

Dutch Interior - Moneyball CD/LP (Fat Possum)

While Moneyball is punctuated by uncertainty, at its core it is still tethered to the inherently spiritual relationship the bandmates have not only with each other, but with the world that surrounds them. Recorded over a six month period in their Long Beach studio, the ten songs that make up the record find cohesion “not just in the art but the physical space”: the band’s self-made studio as well as their longstanding friendships. Produced by Reeves and mixed by Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Duster, Fleet Foxes), you can begin to pick up the separate stylings and personalities of the band members by the songs they independently write (five out of the six band members have vocal and lyrical credits on the record) before bringing to the band at large, where the songs often grow into new forms all together. Despite this individual approach to songwriting, they describe each other as “branches of the same core life” whose colliding influences and experience all bleed into the songs. [Indie store exclusive evergreen color vinyl.]

Kinky Friedman - Poet of Motel 6 CD/LP (Blue Elan)

Kinky Friedman's final record (he passed away on June 27, 2024) 'Poet of Motel 6' is a moving collection of ten songs about love and loss. Kinky plumbs the depths of love and mortality on his final album. Joined by Texas royalty like Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Rick Trevino, Amy Nelson, Rodney Crowell, and produced by fellow Rolling Thunder Revue alumni David Mansfield, this record truly lays bare the heart of this Texas bard. 'Poet of Motel 6' marks the final chapter in Kinky Friedman's extraordinary musical journey. Fans and newcomers alike will discover an album that is as unforgettable as the man who created it.

Selena Gomez & Benny Blanco - I Said I Love You First CD/LP (Interscope)

Selena Gomez and benny blanco team up to release their first project as a couple, ‘I Said I Love You First’. The album celebrates the pair's love story, giving fans a unique window into their relationship. This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences. It chronicles their entire story – before they met, falling in love, and looking to what the future holds. Available on candy cane red vinyl with signed insert.

Lonnie Holley - Tonky LP (Jagjaguwar)

The work of Lonnie Holley is a work of accumulation and close attention. The delight of finding a sound and pressing it up against another found sound and another until, before a listener knows it, they are awash in a symphony of sound that feels like it stitches together as it is washing over you. Tonky is an album that takes its name from a childhood nickname that was affixed to Holley when he lived a portion of his childhood life in a honky tonk. Lonnie Holley's life of survival and endurance is one that required - and no doubt still requires - a kind of invention. An invention that is also rich and present in Holley's songs, which are full and immersive on Tonky. [Limited edition red vinyl.]

Ryan Hurd - Midwest Rock & Roll CD/LP (Big Machine)

Singer/songwriter Ryan Hurd has accumulated more than one billion on-demand career streams, received numerous award nominations, including two GRAMMY nominations, and has scored multiple No. 1 hits as singer and a songwriter. His debut album reached the top five of Spotify's most-streamed Country albums and garnered critical acclaim. Midwest Rock & Roll marks Hurd's sophomore album, paying homage to his midwestern roots and exploring the aftermath of leaving his home behind in chase of a dream.

Japanese Breakfast - For Melancholy Brunettes (and sad women) CD/LP (Dead Oceans)

After a decade making the most of improvised recording spaces set in warehouses, trailers and lofts, Japanese Breakfast's fourth album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women), marks the band's first proper studio release. Produced by Grammy Award winner Blake Mills, the record sees front-woman and songwriter Michelle Zauner pull back from the bright extroversion that defined it's predecessor Jubilee to examine the darker waves that roil within, the moody, fecund field of melancholy, long held to be the psychic state of poets on the verge of inspiration. The result is an artistic statement of purpose: a mature, intricate, contemplative work that conjures the romantic thrill of a gothic novel. [Indie store exclusive frosted shadow color vinyl.]

Lola Kirke - Trailblazer LP (One Riot Records)

Lola Kirke is a powerhouse of creativity - a gifted artist, writer, and actress with a story as dynamic as her talents. Born in the UK, shaped by New York, and now thriving in Nashville, she channels her life experiences into art. Her highly anticipated album, Trailblazer, delves into the defining moments of her journey, exploring the complexity of relationships with family, friends, and lovers. This is Lola at her most authentic - unapologetically bold and undeniably captivating. Free for all ages and free beer for those 21+ with valid ID.]

Kendall Jane Meade - Space LP (Mother West)

Jon Pareles of The New York Times once wrote "If Aimee Mann had fended off cynicism, she might sound like Kendall Jane Meade... turning folk-rock into stately pop, wrapping vulnerability and longing in quietly radiant arrangements" and Spin Magazine claims "Meade hails straight from the Carly Simon School of Confessional Songwriting." Meade's influences include 60s & 70s folk and pop songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Francoise Hardy, Margot Guryan, Carole King, Christine McVie, and indie pop icons like Camera Obscura and The Softies. An accomplished singer and musician who has contributed to albums or played/sang live with Sparklehorse, Helium, The Spinanes, Lloyd Cole, Gramercy Arms, Anders Parker, Stars, and more. Recorded in LA, NYC, and her hometown of Detroit, MI, she leaned on her musical community, old and new, to help guide the songs to beautiful completion. Special guests include Mary Timony, Jennifer O'Connor, Margaret White, Anna Padgett, Eli Wulfmeir of Leroy From the North, Matt Van, and Alie Byland. The result is raw, real, and ultimately radiant-a reflection of each stage of her healing process. "I started writing this album with a very broken heart. The process of creating it, fueled by the power of music, friendship, and community, brought the pieces closer to whole than I ever dreamed possible. My mission for this album was to process some really raw feelings-with the hope that it might help others to do the same." -KJM

My Morning Jacket - is CD/LP (ATO)

For more than 25 years, My Morning Jacket have achieved an incredibly rare feat in rock & roll, upholding a long- established cultural legacy while sustaining the curiosity and creative hunger of their earliest days. For their 10th studio album, the band teamed up with GRAMMY Award-winning producer Brendan O'Brien (Springsteen, Pearl Jam) for what may be their most masterfully realized work yet, once again expanding the limits of their sound while elevating their artistry to unprecedented heights. Available on "Blue Iceberg" color vinyl with custom inner sleeve and 4-page insert.

Ora The Molecule - Dance Therapy LP (Mute)

Mute US is excited to announce the release of Dance Therapy, the sophomore album from worldwide signing Nora Schjelderup, aka Ora the Molecule. Dance Therapy follows a transformative period for Schjelderup, whose DJ career took off postpandemic. She has shared the stage with fellow Norwegian legends like Todd Terje and Lindstrøm, and opened for Røyksopp, earning her the title of Norway’s queen of disco. Inspired by her DJ sets, ‘70s sci-fi sounds and Italo-disco, Dance Therapy is a retro-futuristic fever dream which Schjelderup crafted in a remote cabin in the woods while navigating a series of severe losses. “I had a lot of pain,” she reflects. “This was my own way of dealing with it. A way to get energy back in the body.”

David Ramirez - All the Not So Gentle Reminders CD/LP (Blue Corn Music)

Venerated singer/songwriter David Ramirez releases All The Not So Gentle Reminders, his most ambitious album to date. The twelve-song collection is an eclectic musical journey, featuring richly textured arrangements, ethereal acoustic balladry, sweeping choruses and hints of cabaret. All The Not So Gentle Reminders may be the most liberating album in Ramirez's body of work. The album, his sixth LP, is a creative revelation. "I love all the records I've made in the past," says Ramirez. "But in making them, there was always the thought in the back of my mind of where and what it could get me... This time it was all about just the joy of making it, about having fun with it.

Raven - Gnosis LP (Incienso)

For Incienso's first release of 2025, the label is excited to present Gnosis, the debut album from San Francisco-based musician Raven. Dripping in warped synthesizer tones and flickering drum patterns, Gnosis is a bold and new exploration into Raven's timeless and immersive world.

Graham Reynolds - Mountain LP (Fire Records)

Acclaimed composer (A Scanner Darkly, Before Midnight, Hit Man) and musical maverick Graham Reynolds releases his debut solo album for Fire Records. Pressed on limited edition purple/white splatter vinyl and housed in a deluxe die cut sleeve.

“The quintessential modern composer” -The Independent

Bobby Rush & Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Young Fashioned Ways CD/2xLP (Deep Rush Visuals)

Bobby Rush and Kenny Wayne Shepherd were born about 44 years and miles apart. Several decades later after the two forged their own path in music and the blues, it seemed like an idea that had been waiting to happen. For over 100 years, blues music has inspired, comforted and spoken to the truth. YOUNG FASHIONED WAYS has managed to accomplish all of that and more. Shepherd notes, "Once Bobby and I got together, it felt like going home," with Rush adding, "I've been waiting a long time for something like this to come knocking." Kenny Wayne Shepherd is a multi-platinum recording artist with five Grammy nominations, several Blues Music awards, among many other awards and accolades. Bobby Rush is a 3x Grammy winner and Blues Hall of Famer with his most recent Grammy win for his last album All My Love For You." [Limited edition maroon vinyl.]

Spiritworld - Helldorado LP (Century Media)

With Helldorado, the third installment of Spiritworld's death-western trifecta, chief hombre Stu Folsom and his rhinestone-encrusted, Stetson-wearin' wrecking crew take you deeper into a world where the hot desert sun beats down on a singular vision of the American West as a gateway to hell. "It's a different album than the past two," says Folsom of the thematic and sonic journey that began with the Las Vegas band's 2020 Pagan Rhythms LP and continued with 2022's Deathwestern. From the honky-tonk swing of opener "Abilene Grime" to the Slayer-worthy riffing of "No Vacancy in Heaven" and the unforgettable "Oblivion" (which features members of Black Braid and Rise Against), Spiritworld's story rides on with this latest offering, blasting Mojave-born bloodlust and stomping tomahawk riffs while charging straight into a sonic vision of macabre Americana.

Macie Stewart - When the Distance is Blue CD/LP (International Anthem)

'When the Distance is Blue' is Macie Stewart’s International Anthem debut. The Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser describes the collection as “a love letter to the moments we spend in-between”—a letter realized via an intentional return to piano, her first instrument and the origin of her creative expression. Here Stewart creates a striking and cinematic work through collages of prepared piano, field recordings, and string quartet compositions, one that gives shape to a transient universe all its own while tracing the line of her musical past, full circle.

Tesfa Williams - Beyond Today 12" (Heist Recordings)

Tesfa Williams (f.k.a. T. Williams) celebrates his personal ancestry and the diversity of black electronic music with a name change on his Heist Recordings debut. Williams is an artist with a long history in UK club music. Long before his critically acclaimed 2024 debut album Raves of Future Past, he was knee-deep in the UK grime scene, building a strong reputation in UK funky, soulful house and Garage with remixes of "Latch for Disclosure" and "Sam Smith," bumping originals on Strictly Rhythm, Local Action with Julio Bashmore, and much more. On his debut for Heist, the artist digs deep into his black roots and delivers an EP that celebrates his eclectic sound with four originals full of high notes. EP highlight "Futures" is built around a blend of trippy electronics and driving Rhodes hits, which makes this a track perfect for those moments you simply want to go deep, heads-down, and feel the music.

The Deviants - Disposable LP (Morgan Blue Town)

The Deviants were an influential underground rock band from the UK, active primarily in the late 1960s. Known for their raw, anarchic style, they combined garage rock, proto-punk, and psychedelic influences. The Deviants' sound was characterized by its experimental approach, blending bluesy riffs, rebellious lyrics, and chaotic energy, making them part of the UK countercultural movement and a significant precursor to punk. Their sophomore album Disposable, a mix of satire, politics, and raw rock music, was originally released in 1968. Although The Deviants didn't achieve mainstream success, they became a cult band with a lasting influence on punk and alternative rock. Frontman Mick Farren went on to have a solo music career and became a respected writer and journalist.

Lou Donaldson - Say It Loud LP (Blue Note)

Lou Donaldson had been a Blue Note stalwart since his earliest recordings in 1952 and over the following 15 years produced numerous classic dates spanning bebop, hard bop, and soul jazz. But when the alto saxophonist hooked up with the funky drummer Leo Morris (aka Idris Muhammad) for 1967's Alligator Bogaloo it began a run of great groove-oriented albums, including 1968's Say It Loud. Filling out the band were Donaldson's fellow Blue Note labelmate Blue Mitchell (trumpet), Charles Earland (organ), and Jimmy Ponder (guitar) on this emphatic session, which opens with a firmly in-the-pocket version of James Brown's "Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)." This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is stereo, all-analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

The Folk Implosion - Dare To Be Surprised LP (Joyful Noise Records)

The Folk Implosion's John Davis and Lou Barlow were in the middle of recording Dare to Be Surprised, the follow-up to their 1994 debut album, Take A Look Inside, when it happened. The KIDS stuff - the handful of songs and instrumental tracks they'd contributed to the soundtrack of the now infamous Harmony Korine/Larry Clark film - had been something of a lark, but it was while recording it at Boston's venerable Fort Apache that they met Wally Gagel. A happy accident: Gagel happened to be the house engineer on duty the day they showed up, but they found in him someone whose general sensibilities, and, critically, enthusiasm for new wave, matched their own. The results marked a shift from earlier Folk Implosion efforts. The partnership between Lou Barlow, already an indie-rock veteran with two of the era's most influential bands in Dinosaur Jr. And Sebadoh amongst his credits, and John Davis, the erstwhile librarian whose skeletal solo work paired elliptical guitar figures with lyrics that evoked the language poets, seemed at first like an opportunity to get silly with it in ways that wouldn't have sat quite right with their other projects. What came out of Fort Apache was different: mannered, moody, dubby even (they sampled Erik Satie, for crying out loud!). Lacking the budget to go back to the proper studio that the KIDS gig had afforded them, the Folk Implosion settled instead on Gagel's small recording space in Boston's South End. There were rules, rules born from frank conversations. No chords. No strumming. No indie rock! They whiled away afternoons in the park writing lyrics, trading lines. And over a year of episodic sessions, a weekend here, a few days there, an album came together. When "Natural One" blew up it could've changed the calculus - the opportunity was there to scrap what they'd been working on and start over with major-label money - but they elected instead to stay the course, confident in the process. It seems a bit of a shame from this remove that Dare to Be Surprised was destined to live in the shadow of the KIDS soundtrack's success, but the '90s were a weird time, and it was sometimes hard to recognize things for what they were. What this was, it's clear now, is the sound of a band truly finding it's feet, and forging something genuinely new in the process. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Grits & Glamour (Lorrie Morgan & Pam Tillis) - Dos Divas LP (Red River Entertainment)

Now available on limited edition red vinyl.

Haruomi Hosono - Tale of Genji OST LP (Victory)

Originally released in 1987 as a film soundtrack, this expressly ambient work by the Japanese composer is based on the Gagaku style of ancient Japanese court music, but with a shimmer of tones created by one person using a computer. Unlike much of Hosono's catalogue, here the synthesizer acts mostly as an atmospheric texture, and the music instead focuses on traditional Japanese instruments, particularly koto, flute and drums. The truly striking aspect of this soundtrack is the layering of the instruments, which accumulate to the point of becoming unfamiliar: throngs of finger-beaten strings sound like a beehive of insects, waves of gentle hand percussion sound like the swell of inhalations and exhalations, the evocative flute suggests the howl of the wind.

Roland Kirk - Now Please Don’t You Cry, Beautiful Edith LP (Verve Acoustic Sounds)

Released in 1967 with personnel including Lonnie Liston Smith (piano), Ronnie Boykins (bass), and Grady Tate (drums), Now Please Don't You Cry, Beautiful Edith marked the beginning of Kirk's groovier explorations that would eventually lead him to record Blacknuss in 1971. Sun Ra - Uncharted Passages 2xLP (Modern Harmonic)

Sun Ra was a master of misdirection. Tape boxes wrongly labeled-whether by accident or design-are legendary among Ra archivists. One can speculate about the artist's intent or carelessness, but source misinformation abounds on Ra tape cases, album jackets, cassettes, ephemera-as well as in interviews. It's as if Ra, in furtherance of his own mythmaking, wanted to keep historians guessing. This project began as a misidentified tape discovered by Michael D. Anderson of the Sun Ra Music Archive. The 7-inch reel, which contained a live Ra solo piano performance of 11 works-some recognizable, others not-was of stellar quality, and was marked as a 1979 Carnegie Hall date. But the program on the tape did not align with known facts (e.g., titles played, concert duration) which were chronicled in a Newsday review of Ra's appearance at Carnegie in September of that year. With a prod from writer/historian Ted Gioia and further research by myself, the tape was eventually identified as a mostly unreleased July 1977 performance by Ra at a downtown NYC "jazz café" called The Axis-in-Soho.

Ali Farka Toure - Ali Farka Toure LP (Survival Research)

One of the best-known African musicians of all time, the renowned Malian singer and guitarist Ali Farka Toure was one of the pioneers of African desert blues. Born to a noble caste, he was forbidden to play music but wound up representing Mali in the early 1960s in an international contest held in Bulgaria, where he bought his first guitar and was exposed to the music of John Lee Hooker, which became a big influence. This self-titled classic was recorded for Radio Mali in 1977 and captures Toure at his magnificent best with just his guitar for accompaniment, aside from violin on "Yer Mali Wolo" and "Remobe."

Doc Watson - Live at Club 47 LP (Yep Roc)

Doc was first discovered and recorded by folklorist Ralph Rinzler and collector and discographer Eugene Earle, who were on a collecting trip through North Carolina looking for traditional artists to record. Once these field recordings were released, as “Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s Vol. 1” (and later Vol. 2) on Folkways Records, Doc’s reputation grew, and he soon began playing for enthusiastic urban audiences farther from home. Rinzler presented Doc in concert in New York City for his organization, The Friends of Old Time Music, in March of 1961, and booked a series of follow up dates which included a stop in Cambridge at the Club 47 in February of 1963, where the present recordings were made.
