Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Deerhoof - Noble and Godlike In Ruin CD/LP/cassette (Joyful Noise)

Though Deerhoof long ago established itself as one of the greatest rock groups ever to stride the earth-and if you think that's hyperbole, you haven't spent enough time listening to Deerhoof-they once again discover previously unknown combinations of candy-coated riffs, sideways pop hooks, free-jazz freakouts, and surrealist humor. Joyful and foreboding, cybernetic and deeply human, carrying an implicit note of defiant optimism in their refusal to bow to convention or received wisdom. A firecrackers-for-breakfast, intercontinental-ballistic-blockparty, household-chemicals-that-should-never-be-mixed, electric-jolt-to-body-parts-and-brain-chemistry, combustible love-letter to the human race. Featuring special guest Saul Williams on one track. [Limited edition ‘test tube green’ color vinyl.]

Manu Dibango - Sax & Spirituals: Lamastabastani LP (Diggers Factory)

This project by Manu Dibango, the legendary saxophonist and pioneer of Afro-fusion jazz, delves into a musical universe where the saxophone becomes the voice of a spiritual and introspective quest. Sax & Spirituals Lamastabastani merges jazz, gospel, and African influences to weave a dialogue between sacred traditions and modern expressions. With this work, Dibango pays tribute to the spiritual roots of music while reaffirming his commitment to sonic innovation. The project's minimalist and meditative approach speaks to both the soul and the senses, offering a musical experience imbued with depth and humanity.

Bryan Ferry - Loose Talk CD/LP (Merry Star)

New album from the former Roxy Music vocalist. Loose Talk is a collaboration between Bryan Ferry and Amelia Barratt, who penned all the lyrics for the album. Introducing Loose Talk, the new collaborative album of music by Bryan Ferry with spoken texts by performance artist, writer and painter Amelia Barratt. Richly detailed and transportive, 'Orchestra' - the first piece to be revealed from the album Loose Talk. Loose Talk signals the beginning of a new creative chapter for Bryan Ferry, blurring the lines between music, poetry and art. Fifty-three years since Roxy Music's iconic debut album arrived like a bolt-from-the-blue, his latest project is just as startlingly unexpected. The sounds and shapes, and the spoken words they are set to, are unlike any previous Bryan Ferry album. At the same time, the mood that Loose Talk captures is rooted in Ferry's past half-century of work.

Samantha Fish - Paper Doll CD/LP (Rounder)

One of the most formidable guitarists in recent history, Samantha Fish brings both mind-blowing power and extraordinary emotionality to everything she creates. For help in shaping Paper Doll's magnificently rowdy but deeply nuanced sound, Fish reunited with Detroit garage-rock icon Bobby Harlow and enlisted the core members of her live band (bassist Ron Johnson, drummer Jamie Douglass, keyboardist Mickey Finn), marking the latest entry in an uncompromising and adventurous catalog. Available on clear smoke vinyl. [Indie exclusive clear smoke vinyl with signed print.]

Ghost - Skeletal CD/LP (Loma Vista)

Produced by Gene Walker and mixed by Andy Wallace and Dan Malsch, Ghost's sixth psalm, Skeletá, is it's most unflinchingly introspective work to date. Skeletá's lyrics render the distinct individual emotional vistas of each of it's 10 songs in one-on-one fashion, at times as if in a dialogue with oneself in a mirror. The end result is a singular collection of timeless, universal sentiments, all filtered through a prism of a uniquely personal point of view. [Indie exclusive violet vinyl.]

Jeff Goldblum & The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra - Still Blooming CD/LP (Decca)

Fresh from his starring roles in Kaos and the hit Wicked movie, Goldblum returns to the piano, joined by guest vocalists Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson and Maiya Sykes. The album showcases reimagined jazz standards alongside original compositions, highlighting Goldblum's enduring passion for jazz.

Goose - Everything Must Go 3xLP (No Coincidence)

For their 4th full-length studio album, Everything Must Go, Goose teamed up once again with D. James Goodwin, who produced their critically acclaimed 2022 studio effort, Dripfield. Returning to his studio, The ISOKON in Woodstock, NY, the band pushed themselves to create another cohesive effort representative of their current creative output. Considered by Mitarotonda to be akin to a "mix tape" of the band's recent catalog, the album contains a blend of fan-favorite live staples and brand-new songs, sure to delight old and new listeners alike.

Billy Idol - Dream Into It CD/LP (Dark Horse Records)

Billy Idol's ninth studio album and first full-length record in over ten years tells a rich and deeply personal tale of Billy's voyage from young punk rock dreamer to his reset as an MTV leather-gloved icon; then on to all his well-publicized hits highs lows overdoses and accidents; culminating with a devastatingly honest assessment of the price of fame and the wisdom accrued by getting your act together and embracing family. And even though Dream Into It tells a story it is also on a track-to-track level a completely satisfying old school/new school pumping rocking punk/pop odyssey as only Billy Idol and longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens can create with the able assistance of producer Tommy English and features with rock mavens Joan Jett and Alison Mosshart. [Indie exclusive purple vinyl.]

Coco Jones - Why Not More? CD/LP (Def Jam)

Coco Jones the Grammy-winning R&B breakout star releases her debut LP Why Not More?. Lead single "Taste" is produced by hit-makers Stargate and Jasper Harris. The song, which finds Jones singing over a sample of Britney Spears' pop classic "Toxic,". In addition to "Taste," Why Not More? features previously released tracks "Most Beautiful Design," featuring Future and London On Da Track, and "Here We Go (Uh-Oh)." The latter track was nominated for Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song at this year's Grammys, bringing her total to seven career nominations before releasing an album.

Light-Space Modulator - The Rising Wave LP (AD 93)

The Rising Wave marks the debut collaboration between singer-songwriter Marlene Ribeiro (of psychedelic band GNOD) and electronic producer Shackleton under the name Light-Space Modulator. Ribeiro's ethereal voice -- part singing, part incantation -- feels both distant and intimate, humming just behind the horizon. Her experimental soundscapes flow like a streamlined river, intertwining seamlessly with Shackleton's deep, textural production and intricate percussion. Shackleton's percussive production ebbs and swells, conjuring a hypnotic, tripped-out atmosphere. At The Rising Wave's core lies a sense of intention, a cleansing ritual designed to shift perception and inspire transformation.

Kyle M - The Real Me LP (Stones Throw)

After a career in comedy culminating in his role as SNL cast member from 2013 until 2022, Kyle Mooney is ready to shed his comedic skin and introduce the real him: Kyle M, multidisciplinary artist and proud visionary behind his self-recorded debut album The Real Me. The record reflects on Kyle’s career shift and peeks behind the curtain into a singular artistic vision unbound by genre – you’ll find rock,

Madteo - Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta 2LP (Unsure)

Madteo is one of the great eccentric visionaries of electronic music and his new album Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta on Unsure once more happens to be a mind-bending piece of art. Misto Atmosferico E Ad Azione Diretta shifts between focused gritty grooves and the long freeform associative adventures that you haven't heard before, never static, sometimes overwhelming, always on edge. The opener "Cans People" is an archaic rave monster, "To Know Those Who" is non-linear dub techno, "Nocturnal Palates" expands the "Filter House" universe and "Rave Nite Itz All Right" hits you hard and strange (yet subtle, in a way). The last two tracks then let loose; Madteo manipulates time, space and sounds to create the psychedelic secrets of "Luglio Ottantotto." And "Emo G (Sticky Wicket)" explores the outskirts not only of house or techno or whatever but music in general, a 15-min-trip through the low frequencies, the rumble, the dark hearts and the enchantment.

Jensen McRae - I Don’t Know How But They Found Me! CD/LP (Dead Oceans)

From the very beginning, fans have fallen in love with Jensen McRae for the sharp, evocative and clear-eyed songwriting. McRae songwriting is vulnerable, yes, but it's also powerful for not holding back. Now, I Don't Know How But They Found Me! Delivers McRae's evolution from a promising young artist to a bona fide songwriter and star. Born and raised in LA, Jensen McRae has studied and made music for most of her life. She attended Grammy Camp in high school and graduated from USC's Thornton School of Music with a degree in Popular Music. McRae's debut album, Are You Happy Now?, was written mostly when she was just 21, and was the first step in developing her now-devoted fanbase. Are You Happy Now? navigates identity from it's deepest foundations - life as a young, bi-racial Black and Jewish woman - to it's most personal musings - do I trust you, do I trust myself? [Limited edition violet color vinyl.]

Molchat Doma - Live at Panorama Hotel LP (Sacred Bones)

Molchat Doma are releasing their first official live album, performed and recorded at the iconic Hotel Panorama, the striking architectural monument featured on the cover of their breakthrough album Etazhi. Celebrated for channeling a distinct Soviet-era darkwave aesthetic, Molchat Doma bring their haunting sound to life with three fan-favorite tracks: "Toska" and "Sudno" from the viral phenomenon Etazhi, and "Chernye Cvety" from their critically acclaimed 2024 album Belaya Polosa. Lauded for their ability to blend melancholy synths with infectious rhythms, this release captures the raw energy of their live performances-showcasing Egor's chillingly emotive vocals alongside subtle, live reinterpretations of their signature synth and guitar arrangements.

Willie Nelson - Oh What A Beautiful World CD/LP (Sony Legacy)

Willie Nelson's 2025 album (his 77th solo studio album and his 154th album overall) is an album that focuses on the songs of Rodney Crowell, the latest in Nelson's storied history of focusing entire albums on a single songwriter's work. Willie Nelson and Rodney Crowell are two Texas singer-songwriters whose careers have intersected often since Crowell first heard Nelson's earliest songs on the radio and saw his shows in Houston in the mid-1960s. Willie first recorded a Rodney Crowell song in 1983 and last did so 40 years later for 2024's The Border. Produced by Nelson's longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon and featuring an amazing backing band of Nashville gunslingers accompanying Nelson's vocals and inspired guitar work on Trigger, the album handpicks 12 songs from the last 50 years, including the title track as a duet between Nelson and Crowell. From early tracks like 1976's "Banks Of The Old Bandera" (recorded by Jerry Jeff Walker) and 1981's "Shame On The Moon" (a hit for Bob Seger) to 90s tracks like "What Kind Of Love," (co-written by Will Jennings based on a Roy Orbison melody), "Stuff That Works" (co-written with Guy Clark), from early 2000's cuts written for hit albums by Keith Urban and Tim McGraw to four cuts from Crowell's beloved 2010s albums and a cut released as recently as 2021.

Opeth - The Last Will and Testament CD/2xLP (Reigning Phoenix)

"The Last Will and Testament" is a concept record, a restless musical journey in a way mirroring the band's own relationship with music as a consumer of it. There are some familiar ingredients, as most of the band's music has sprung from the same source, so it's naturally going to sound like "Opeth". Instead of the usual instant rush, expect to favour the "strange" over the "obvious", sonically speaking!

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Death Hilarious CD/LP (Missing Piece)

The fifth album from Newcastle's riff wizards Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs is defined by calculated aggression and self-lacerating lyrics. It's startling bonuses include playful synth work and the appearance of a giant from hip-hop. With it's title juxtaposing absurdity and seriousness, this is Death Hilarious. Whereas 2023's Land Of Sleeper was conceived as an immersive headphones experience, this time Pigs strove for something more directly hostile. "We wanted it to be a slap in the face," grins producer and guitarist Sam Grant. That objective came, in part, from playing so many gigs over the last couple of years. The band felt well-oiled and ripe to give listeners at home the kind of pummelling their audiences receive. [Limited edition translucent orange vinyl.]

Samia - Bloodless CD/LP (Grand Jury)

On her third album Bloodless, Samia seeks comfort in absence. "It's easier to be what someone wants you to be if you give as little as possible," she says. Drawing inspiration from unsolved mysteries - inexplicable cattle mutilations, the presence of God, the impossibility of femininity - Samia examines how shadows can loom larger than their source. "I noticed a pattern in my life of wanting to live up to the person I became in someone's head; you become a lot bigger with distance," she reflects, exploring the allure of existing as a fantasy. Through haunting harmonies and spectral imagery, the album seeks a path through that space between void and flesh-and-blood presence. Samia would like to be both, to be whole, to be impossible. Rich with layers that shift seamlessly from sparse folk to sweeping indie-pop epics, Bloodless explores Samia's relationship with a fragmented, symbolic version of Men-a patchwork of expectations and imagined standards she tried to meet, which ultimately shaped her sense of self. "I've spent the past two decades unintentionally conflating men with my understanding of God," Samia explains. "The person I became in order to impress this imagined figure is inseparable from who I am today. With this album, I've tried to confront that head-on." Written & produced in both North Carolina and her new home of Minneapolis throughout 2024, Bloodless finds Samia reuniting with longtime-collaborator Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen for the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2023's revered Honey. [Indie exclusive translucent smoke vinyl.]

Mattie Schell - Everything Means Nothing CD/LP (Compass)

Mattie Schell is at the forefront of the newest crop of young artists redefining Americana music. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, she deftly blends the heartfelt honesty of American roots with the raw power of soul, creating a sound that has roots in tradition but is proudly and uniquely her own. Her debut solo release Everything Means Nothing was produced by JD Simo at his studio and mixed at Nashville's historic Compass Sound Studio (aka "Hillbilly Central"). [Limited edition lime green vinyl.]

Southern Avenue - Family CD/LP (Alligator)

Blues Music Award-winning, GRAMMY-nominated, Memphis-based family band plays original, modern soul and roots music that is uplifting and timeless. On "Family," their fourth album and first for Alligator, the band unleashes one musically memorable performance after another, all delivered with soul-healing power. From triumphant opener Long Is The Road to the emotionally resonant Found A Friend In You to the raucous Rum Boogie, the music is a vibrant blend of Memphis soul and blues, warm sister harmonies, and positive messages reminiscent of The Staple Singers. [Limited edition coke bottle green vinyl.]

SUMAC & Moor Mother - The Film CD/LP (Thrill Jockey)

What happens when you combine SUMAC: a band that uses the volume, distortion, and guitar-centric approach of metal to make music that has the malleability of jazz and textural exploration of noise with Moor Mother: a poet and sound artist that has deconstructed hip hop to a point where it’s less about rhyme and rhythm (though obviously both are present in her work) and more about oratorical cadence and power. The Film is an album that takes attributes of both artists’ work and finds common ground in shifting musical patterns, and expressive force. The record is a musical thumbing of their noses at the more traditional approaches of their respective fields, an innovative, powerhouse of an album. The Film’s moniker speaks to the fact that it is conceived and delivered as a complete album, a full story or narrative. Moor Mother puts it best: “The idea is to create a moment outside of the convention. This is a work of art. Thinking about the work as a Film, instead of an album or a collection of songs. This task is impossible in an industry that wants to force everything into a box of consumption. You won’t understand or get the full picture until the artwork is completed. This work is developing and is requesting more agency within the creative process.” The Film does have clear themes running throughout – again Moor Mother expounds: “the themes are universal in nature - land - displacement - the climate - human rights and freedoms - war and peace - the idea of running away from the many violent forces and horrific systems of man and empire.”

Sunflower Bean - Mortal Primetime LP (Lucky Number)

Sunflower Bean's fourth album, and follow-up to their self-produced EP 'Shake', is their most accomplished work yet. A 10-song powerhouse that elegantly merges arena-rock, art pop, and new wave into a truly unfettered manifestation of their one-of-a-kind artistry. A record that bursts with vitality and vulnerability it both celebrates their history whilst hurtling towards their future. [Indie exclusive numbered translucent red vinyl with bonus 12”.]

Tennis - Face Down in the Garden LP (Mutually Detrimental)

Face Down In the Garden is the seventh LP from the critically acclaimed duo Tennis. Offsetting intuitive melodies with unusual arrangements, Tennis returns with music that feels familiar but resists convention. Lead singles Weight of Desire, At The Wedding and Sister highlight Tennis' range as writers and producers, evolving beyond their girl-group roots into what is their most fully-realized effort to date. [Indie exclusive bone white vinyl with booklet.]

Jimi Tenor - July Blue Skies LP (Timmion)

Crafted over fiery sessions between Tenor and Cold Diamond & Mink, this vinyl release offers six soul-grasping tracks ranging from mellow groove to soundtrack funk. The album's opening title song kicks off with an extended analog synth intro which eventually develops into a sweet romantic invocation, painting a sonic canvas reminiscent of a boundless summer sky. The most vocal tune of this quite instrumental set of songs "Sky Train Baby" propels the listener on a locomotive ride through the star systems while "Venus of Barsoon" with it's drum breaks and fuzz sounds blast you straight into sci fi movie funk territory. The album's B-side opens with "Ikuchi," where Tenor's always trusted flute and tenor sax take the spotlight over the slinky library beats. Closing the album we discover two single releases, the sublime "Summer Of Synesthesia" and the demonic "Tsicroxe" both completely worthy to hear sequenced inside this album as well. This album might be just the Spring jam that you needed in your life.

Emma-Jean Thanckray - Weirdo CD/LP (East/West)

Emma-Jean Thackray, the visionary producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, releases her highly anticipated second album, Weirdo via Gilles Peterson's celebrated label, Brownswood Recordings / Parlophone Records. Known for defying musical boundaries, Thackray's latest work is a deeply personal and utterly original exploration of selfhood, grief, and gratitude. Drawing on an eclectic mix of influences - grunge, pop, soul, p-funk, and jazz - Weirdo is a triumphant celebration of survival and individuality. Written, performed, recorded, mixed, produced and arranged entirely by Thackray in her South London flat, the album stands as a testament to her extraordinary musicianship and fearless self-expression. [CD is here now, vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]

William Tyler - Time Indefinite CD/2xLP (Psychic Hotline)After crucial stints in Silver Jews and Lambchop, William Tyler emerged with a string of inquisitive albums that paired his country rearing and classical enthusiasm with his ardor for experimentation and field recordings. His productive enclave of instrumental music has not only ushered in new sounds, but also critical new voices. No other solo American guitarist this century has impacted that fecund scene quite like him. And on the brilliant, bracing Time Indefinite, Tyler's first solo album in five years, he steps at last into the widening gyre he helped create. The guitar is the starting point for an album that will make you reconsider not only Tyler but also the possibilities of an entire field. A vortex of noise and harmony, ghosts and dreams, anguish and hope, it is not just a great guitar record. It is a stunning record by a great guitarist, a masterpiece of our collectively anxious time.

Viagra Boys - Viagr Aboys CD/LP (Shrimptech)

"Viagr aboys is the fourth studio album from Viagra Boys. Featuring single "Man Made of Meat", the LP sees VB turn inwards, leaving the acid-laced, conspiracy-addled societal commentary of previous LP Cave World behind to journey into the acid-laced, conspiracy-addled landscape within. Absurd, intense and surprisingly tender, viagr aboys shuts out the noise to find that the important part of being alive in the big, stupid world is figuring out that the world inside of you that is equally big and stupid. [Indie exclusive blue and white vinyl.]

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

Bahamadia - Kollage 2xLP (Be With Records)

2025 repress. Bahamadia's 1996 debut album Kollage is rightly regarded as one of the greatest rap albums of the 1990s. For the first time ever, Be With presents the definitive double LP version of this eternal hip-hop classic, including the legendary "Path To Rhythm" which never appeared on the original LP or on vinyl, anywhere. An indelible vibe from start-to-finish, Kollage presents Bahamadia's swirling rhymes delivered with an irresistibly butter flow and razor-sharp assuredness over a steady slew of smoothed-out, jazzed-up, blunted beats. Achingly cool and effortlessly funky throughout, it's an absolute must for true '90s hip-hop fanatics. The entire Kollage project was recorded at D&D Studios and the ties to Gang Starr are keenly felt, with DJ Premier producing five tracks in addition to the killer songs Guru had already produced with her. Working with the cream of the mid-'90s East Coast sound, Kollage is, accordingly, a record that demonstrates a varied musical taste with disparate influences. With intelligent, poetic lyricism and a laconic verbal style bursting with both warm texture and deceptive energy, Bahamadia's flow was as inspired by Aretha and Nancy Wilson as it was Q-Tip, Schoolly D and Lady B.

Stanley Cowell - Musa: Ancestral Streams LP (Mack Avenue)

Cowell's pioneering use of both electric and acoustic piano expands the expressive range of the instrument, creating a deeply personal and spiritual experience. Musa: Ancestral Streams is a cornerstone of the Strata- East discography, refecting the label's commitment to artistic freedom and genre-defining works. It not only highlights Cowell's extraordinary vision as a musician but also exemplifies Strata-East's role in championing boundary-pushing, artist-produced records.

Julie Doiron - Broken Girl LP/Cassette (Numero)

HTRK - Rhinestones LP (Ghostly Int’l)

Self-released in the fall of 2021, Rhinestones was a revelation for HTRK, kickstarting a subtle resurgence for the Melbourne group and showing them at the top of their powers. Marked by a new infatuation with "eerie and gothic country music," Rhinestones is an elegant nine-song suite of windswept emotion and heartbreak noir, crafted in skeletal arrangements of guitar, voice, metronomes, and FX. From whispered lament to acoustic eulogy to downtempo vignettes, the album took cues from the economy and brevity of Western folk but skewed through a narcotic, nocturnal lens. The set garnered high praise from Gorilla vs. Bear, The Wire, and Pitchfork. The latter wrote, "Over the past decade, the Melbourne group's music has grown lighter, gentler, and more inviting with every release. Here, they trade their minimal-wave roots for unexpected forays into gothic country." [Limited edition blue vinyl.]
