Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Jill Barber – Encore! CD/LP (Outside Music)

A cafe in Paris, a cocktail lounge in Palm Springs, a beachside bar in Rio de Janeiro, a lokanta in Istanbul. Jill Barber's French repertoire is played around the world and has earned her a following that transcends language barriers. Her music has become the soundtrack to an experience. It is a surprising achievement for an anglophone artist who only began her affair with the French language in her late twenties, following a moment during the Montreal Jazz Festival, where she sang a few notes of French to an enraptured crowd. Inspired by their reaction, Jill enrolled herself in an immersive French school in the South of France, eventually emerging with her own recordings of the songs and poets that inspired her most: Piaf, Gainsbourg, Aznavour.

Bed Maker - Bed Maker LP (Dischord)

Debut album from the punk outfit fronted by Amanda MacKaye. Bed Maker's origins date back to summer 2019, when bassist Arthur Noll (Light Beams, Kid Congo Powers) and drummer Vin Novara (The Crownhate Ruin, 1.6 Band), each having played in Alarms & Controls, invited guitarist Jeff Barsky (Insect Factory, Time Is Fire) to collaborate and see what might happen. By autumn, they invited Amanda MacKaye (Desiderata, Routineers) to join them, and the chemistry was immediate. In February 2020 at DC's Rhizome, Bed Maker played their first show and then paused their activities the following month, as did most people. Bed Maker resumed playing shows in November 2022.

Better Than Ezra – Super Magick CD/LP (Round Hill)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Better Than Ezra is still going strong: after headlining monumental live shows all throughout 2023, the band releases their highly anticipated tenth studio album, Super Magick. Named one of the "100 Greatest Alternative Artists of All Time" by Billboard, with a legacy that includes inspiring a classic Saturday Night Live skit, Better Than Ezra recently shared the first batch of singles from Super Magick: "Mystified", "Contact High", and "Live A Little".

Black Country Communion – V CD/2xLP (J&R Adventures)

Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian come together to release new music for the first time in 7 years. Produced by longtime collaborator Kevin Shirley, V marks a monumental chapter in the band's storied career, embodying a renewed spirit and an evolution of their unmistakable sound. Shirley captures the essence of the band's journey, stating, “For a band that started out as a collection of the best practitioners of their instruments, they very quickly found a unique sound.” [Limited edition blue & white splatter color vinyl.]

Leon Bridges – Like A Ship 7” (Numero)

Columbia Recording artist Leon Bridges effortlessly transforms Pastor T.L. Barrett's "Like A Ship," updating the 50-year-old gospel soul classic for the 21st century. [A color vinyl pressing is available.]

John Cale – Poptical Illusion CD/2xLP+MP3 (Domino)

Despite the album's playful title, Cale's second album in just over a year still contains the same feelings of fierce and inquisitive rage that were present in 2023 album Mercy. He remains angry, still incensed by the willful destruction that unchecked capitalists and unrepentant conmen have hoisted upon the wonders of this world and the goodness of its people. But this is not at all Mercy II, or some collection of castoffs, as throughout his career of more than six decades, Cale has never been much for repetition. His vanguard-shaping enthusiasms have shifted among ecstatic classicism and unbound rock, classic songcraft and electronic reimagination with proud restlessness. [Indie store exclusive translucent orange vinyl.]

Mike Campbell & The Dirty Knobs – Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits CD/LP (BMG)

Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is the third studio album with his solo project the Dirty Knobs, following 2020's Wreckless Abandon and 2022's External Combustion. The 2024 release features guest appearances by Lucinda Williams, Graham Nash, Chris Stapleton and fellow lifelong Heartbreaker, keyboardist Benmont Tench. Mike Campbell is best known as the lead guitarist of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers from its inception in 1976 until the passing of Tom Petty in 2017. He has played on four Bob Dylan albums, most Stevie Nicks albums, three Don Henley albums, and albums with Chris Stapleton, Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, Rob Thomas, Mary J. Blige, Tracy Chapman, Randy Newman and more.

Cola – The Gloss CD/LP (Fire Talk)

Cola's new album The Gloss is tightly wounded but uncluttered. A continuation of the "jittery post-punk" (Fader) and "minimalist rock" (Clash) of their debut, Deep In View, "Pallor Tricks" offers a cranky dissonance, anchored by intuitive percussion and propelled by Tim Darcy's incisive songwriting ("My taste is avant-poor"). It's a kinetic piece of post-punk, cementing Cola at the forefront of "a new kind of art-rock deliverance" (Rolling Stone). [Indie store exclusive olive green vinyl.]

Jess Cornelius – CARE/TAKING LP (Tender Loving)

Jess Cornelius writes arresting songs that capture the disorientation and endless possibilities of being in flux. On her sophomore album CARE/TAKING, the New Zealand-raised, Los Angeles-based artist sings of personal upheaval with striking lucidity and emotional nimbleness.

Crumb – Amama CD/LP (Crumb)

New York psych-pop band Crumb return with Amama, their most carefree and open-hearted album to date. A soundscape full of playful and patchwork experimentation - glitchy pitch-shifted vocals, cell phone recordings, nautical blips, sax mouthpiece solos, blasted drum samples, and piano strings dampened with Silly Putty - Amama continues to deepen the band's hypnotic sound in a cohesive line back through 2021's Ice Melt, 2019's Jinx, and breakout EPs Locket and Crumb.

The Decemberists – As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again CD/2xLP (Yabb)

For over 20 years, The Decemberists have been one of the most original, daring, and thrilling American rock bands. Their distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start, releasing nine full-length albums that are unbound by genre and highly ambitious. Now the beloved indie band is back with their first new album in six years, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again - not only the longest Decemberists album to date (and their first intentional, proper double-LP) but also their most empathetic and accessible, its 13 songs like semaphores of mutual recognition for our fraught times and faint hope. [Indie store exclusive ‘fruit punch’ color vinyl. All vinyl copies at Grimey’s are signed by the band! We put a few up in our webstore so act quick if you want one. Strictly limited to one per person.]

The Early November – The Early November CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Ever since forming in New Jersey in 2001, the band, now consisting of frontman Ace Enders and founding drummer Jeff Kummer- have constantly been striving to find the best and most definitive version of themselves. With this self-titled record, the seventh studio album of their career, the duo has come as close as is possible to doing so. It's an album that ties the past, present and future all together, and as such, it marks what Enders calls a "period or exclamation point in our sentence". It's not a new beginning, per se, but nevertheless something emphatic that signifies, in Enders' words again, "a pivotal moment" for them both. [Indie store exclusive ‘swamp green’ w/ brown splatter vinyl.]

Eivør – Enn CD/LP (Season Of Mist)

Eivør calls her Nordic home in the remote Faroe Islands a landscape of extremes. Sitting in the North Atlantic Ocean just above Scotland and southeast of Iceland, with a total population of about 50,000, the climate is "full of contrasts-very dark, heavy winters and bright summers." Her album Enn ties back to Eivør's Nordic roots. Most of the lyrics, sung entirely in Faroese, were penned in collaboration with the Faroese poet Marjun Syderbø Kjelnæs. The title track is a symphonic, war-torn space odyssey. But the album also dwells on more earthly concerns. Lead single "Jardartra" is told from the perspective of a wounded mother earth, who calls to us with a steadily thumping bassline that's as dark and warm as our planet's molten core.

Funcionário - Momento Claro LP (Glossy Mistakes)

Portuguese artist funcionário dives into the realms of ambient and Fourth World music, inspired by the likes of Jon Hassell, Brian Eno, and Japanese environmental artists such as Hiroshi Yoshimura and Takashi Kokubo. Momento Claro offers a sonic tapestry rich with textures and layers, evoking a sense of spirituality and introspection. The journey begins with "Esperança," a mesmerizing nine-minute meditation adorned with the soothing sounds of the ocean, setting the tone for the ethereal voyage ahead. From the tranquil atmospheres of "Retrato" to the contemplative depths of "Momento Claro," each composition invites listeners to immerse themselves fully in the sonic, dream-like landscape crafted with care and depth.

Gangstagrass – The Blackest Thing On The Menu LP (Rench Audio)

The Blackest Thing On The Menu marks the band's seventh full-length album, and embodies the zest and flavor that Gangstagrass infuses into the realms of bluegrass and hip-hop as they delve into the foundational elements of each genre. The conception of the album's title came about last year while the band was eating dinner at a "blues-themed restaurant in my hometown," MC and vocalist Dolio the Sleuth explains. "There was a Juneteenth-themed menu that had a bunch of 'blackened' spicy items. One of us asked the server for 'the blackest thing on the menu,' and it turned out to be blackened shrimp and cheese grits... which, of course, we all ordered.

John Grant – The Art Of The Lie LP (PIAS America)

Following the runaway success of his last LP, Boy From Michigan, which crashed the UK Top 10 back in July 2021, legendary singer-songwriter John Grant returns with his hugely-anticipated sixth album, The Art Of The Lie. The album is one of one of Grant's greatest and most visionary to date and confirms his status as a modern electronic auteur. The Art Of The Lie was produced by Grant and Grammy-nominated producer Ivor Guest who is perhaps best-known for his work with Grace Jones. It features an array of celebrated musicians including Dave Okumu, Seb Rochford and Robin Mullarkey. [Limited edition pink vinyl.]

Lalah Hathaway – Vantablack CD (Sono Recording Group)

Lalah Hathaway is a 5x Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter and producer and 10x nominee. She is undeniably music royalty. Lalah's music transcends genre - from R&B ballads to pop standards and soulful jazz.

Hermanos Gutierrez – Sonido Cosmico CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)

On their latest album, Sonido Cosmico, Hermanos Gutiérrez embark on a sonic exploration that defies the conventional boundaries of instrumental music. Produced by Dan Auerbach, the collection is a richly textured tapestry, interwoven with the intricate threads of Latin rhythms and ephemeral atmospherics: each track a vignette, a carefully crafted narrative without words, where the brothers' transcendent guitars speak in a language all their own. [Indie store exclusive blue w/ green vinyl. Free slipmat with purchase!]

Winston Hightower – Winston Hytwr LP (K. Records)

Born in Columbus, Ohio in March 1993, Winston Hightower is a prolific home recording artist with an expansive discography that crawls across space and genre. A staple in the Midwestern punk/DIY scene, his first work under the eponymous moniker was a self-released tape in January 2015. Since then, he has put out over 100 songs on tape, online and on video. The music defies easy categorization, and instead breezes through a landscape of synths that effortlessly blend pop, rock, rap and jazz. In doing so, Hightower continues to build a cohesive, ever-morphing experiment in pushing the boundaries of underground guitar music, all with his signature wit and charm.

Malcomlm Jiyane Tree-O – True Story CD (New Soil)

Described by Zimbabwean journalist Liam Brickhill as "a new star in the southern sky", and by his legendary mentor, Bra Johnny Mekoa, as "the future Jonas Gwangwa", Malcolm Jiyane is a cornerstone of the contemporary South African Jazz scene. [Vinyl version due June 28.]

Norah Jones – Staring At The Wall b/w All This Time 7” (Big Crown)

When Norah Jones & Leon Michels made a Christmas record together, we loved it. When we heard Norah was having Leon produce her new full length album Visions, we couldn't wait to hear what they would come up with. The first song we heard over here from those recordings was "All This Time" and we were blown away, playing it all day every day for weeks. That tune needed to be on a 45 so we asked the good folks at Blue Note if they would be down to do a limited edition 7" release with us. To make it a classic plug and ballad pairing we put the stand-out toe tapper "Staring At The Wall" on the A side and what we have here is an absolute must have 45.

Kneecap – Fine Art LP (Heavenly)

When Belfast's Kneecap - aka Mo Chara, Moglaí Bap and DJ Provaí - entered the studio with producer Toddla T in the summer of 2023, they quickly decided to scrap everything they had already prepared and 'build' a pub together. The Rutz is currently a figment of their imagination, but across Fine Art's twelve tracks, and the interconnecting moments between them, it comes to life vividly, providing the perfect backdrop for the cast of characters that appear throughout. Like the band themselves, Fine Art is fiercely intelligent, consistently hilarious, and genuinely thought provoking. It seamlessly merges Irish with English and satire with socially conscious lyrics. Its genius is to immerse you in a world thus far unrepresented in modern music.

Krystal Klear - RB128 12" (Running Back)

New Krystal Klear on Running Back. In his own words: "No notes or real inspiration behind this EP. RB128 consists of four tracks that I made to keep gigs coming and the calendar full. In a time where artists are being forced to DJ like maniacs to keep the electricity running to make more quickfire records (except for Gerd who loves it). These pure dance tracks try to mix the cocktail between the trendy trance that people like now and the good house records they liked yesterday. Standard procedure: Melancholic chords over processed drums and breakdowns that make waiting for a train to pull in more bearable."

Laurel – Palpitations CD/LP (Communion)

Packed with earworm hooks, playful experimentalism and emotive, to-the-bone lyricism, Palpitations is Laurel's confident step into pop's spotlight. [Limited edition opaque gray vinyl.]

Mike Lindsay – Supershapes Volume 1 LP (Moshi Moshi Music)

The first fully fledged solo album by Mike Lindsay, best known as the co-founder of seminal UK acid folktronica band Tunng, and as one half of electronic alt-psych duo LUMP with Laura Marling.

Lizzy McAlpine – Older LP (RCA)

Clear vinyl pressing. Older is the highly anticipated new album from acclaimed singer/songwriter Lizzy McAlpine. Older finds the 24-year-old rising star stepping into newfound confidence, discovering her voice, and defining her artistry with profound simplicity. It's a notable departure for Lizzy, who wrote the LP's deeply personal 14 tracks during a three-year period of transition into adulthood.

James Vincent McMorrow – Wide Open, Horses 2xLP (Nettwerk)

White vinyl. Irish singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, James Vincent McMorrow, returns to the fore with his seventh full-length album. Wide Open, Horses is a candid snapshot of everything that has brought James to this point. The album signifies a retaking of his own narrative, a freeing self-acceptance, and a rebuilding of both his sense of self and his connection to music. [CD version due June 21.]

Moby – Always Centered At Night CD/2xLP (Mute)

On his new album Always Centered at Night, Moby has once again conjured into reality a collection of heartachingly beautiful, tender-yet-defiant songs, made in collaboration with uniquely talented, soulfully aware, other-worldly vocalists. All the songs are love letters to the unrestricted and enchanting music scene of late ‘70s, early ‘80s New York that shaped Moby as a musician. The featured vocalists were given the same assignment: “Please don’t write anything commercial. Let it be weird. Let it be personal. It doesn’t have to make sense.” [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl.]

Mono – Oath 2xCD/2xLP (Temporary Residence)

On their 12th full-length album, Oath, Mono ponder the time that makes up life, and how to make the most of that time. Recorded and mixed with longtime friend and collaborator, Steve Albini, Oath opens like a sunrise with a slowly ascending orchestra and brass section, the full band taking its time to revel in the atmosphere before joining in the splendor. Throughout the album's 71-minute runtime, Mono meditates on that theme of time and life in myriad ways. The unhurried evolution of a song that is a hallmark of Mono's catalog is infused with an air of elegance that elevates Oath to new heights. [Limited edition white vinyl.]

Mötley Crüe – Dogs Of War 12” (Big Machine)

Picture disc. Assembling within a new generation, Mötley Crüe returns with "Dogs Of War," their first solo track since 2015 – narrating a rally of resistance against every bastard of life. Unable to sit back and put their legacy on a leash, the Crüe are here to remind listeners why they remain “The World's Most Notorious Rock Band.” Pushing new lengths in sound and image, just as they have for the past 40 years, there is no fault in confidence that the Crüe have something to say – and we better be all ears.

New Regency Orchestra – New Regency Orchestra CD/LP (Mr Bongo)

Announcing the debut album from one of London's most electrifying acts, New Regency Orchestra. An 18-piece Afro-Cuban big band, inspired by the musical melting pot of NYC in the 1950s, but with the punch and power of a whole host of London's best Latin and jazz musicians. Blowing new life into these compositions, the album is a reimagining of some of the finest music from that golden era. From early 1950s René Hernandez and Tito Puente, through to the 1970s salsa of Rafael Labasta and Orlando Marin, produced and performed with fresh fire. [Indie store exclusive red vinyl.]

RJD2 – Visions Out Of Limelight LP (Orchard)

The 8th full length studio album from RJD2. You may know him from the Mad Men theme. Or "Deadringer". Or those commercials and shows and movies and such. You may not even know the name, but you surely know the tunes. Well into his third decade in the game, RJD2 refuses to let his foot off the gas with quality albums. Ever so funky, mysterious, and quirkily soulful, Visions Out Of Limelight continues his tradition of making records free your mind, and you know what will follow. Featuring vocals from the legendary Jamie Lidell, longtime collaborator Jordan Brown, and even one song by the man himself, this album is sure to satisfy longtime fans and those new to the party alike. [Limited edition teal color vinyl.]

Julius Rodriguez – Evergreen LP (Verve)

On Julius Rodriguez's sophomore album, Evergreen, he returns with exciting new original material and an incredible cover of Dijon's "Many Times". Guest features on the album include Keyon Harrold, Nate Mercereau, and Georgia Anne Muldrow.

Russian Baths – Mirror LP (Good Eye)

Russian Baths fuses the abrasive sounds of New York in the eighties, the angular outbursts of DC hardcore, shoegaze's torrents of noise and the suffocating anxiety of the Information Age. They're named after the iconic co-owned bathhouse that itself reflects the dark and light history of the city. One part horror movie soundtrack, and one-part personal confession, the band's new album, Mirror, is at once imposing and intimate. For fans of Blonde Redhead, the Cure, Protomartyr, Spirit of the Beehive, Dry Cleaning and other music.

Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion – Rectangles And Circumstance CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Nonesuch Records releases Rectangles And Circumstance, an album of ten songs co-written and performed by Caroline Shaw and Sō Percussion. Caroline Shaw is a musician who moves among roles, genres, and mediums, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She is the recipient of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music, several Grammy awards, an honorary doctorate from Yale, and a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Shaw was just announced as Wigmore Hall's 2024–'25 Composer in Residence. For 20 years and counting, Sō Percussion has redefined chamber music for the twenty-first century through an "exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam" (New Yorker). Its members are the Edward T. Cone performers-in-residence at Princeton University.

Snarls – With Love CD/LP (Take This To Heart)

Snarls doesn't pull their punches teaming with producer Chris Walla (Tegan & Sara, Death Cab For Cutie) to create a lavish soundscape production that balances high-powered guitars with ethereal vocal harmonies to construct a sound uniquely their own. Do yourself a favor and listen with headphones.

Lindsey Stirling – Duality CD/LP (Concord)

The seventh studio album from acclaimed musician Lindsey Stirling celebrates the delicate, yet beautiful, nature of duality - the inner battle of fearlessness and self-doubt we all experience. Exploring two distinct styles of music for each side of the album, Duality evokes a sense of magic; encouraging the listener to acknowledge the struggle but to always believe in the limitless version of themselves. [Indie store exclusive ‘butterfly green’ vinyl.]

$uicideboy$ – New World Depression CD/LP (G59)

Since forming a decade ago in 2014, the $uicideboy$ have prolifically shared their distinctive fusion of rap, punk, and trap with audiences worldwide. New World Depression delves deep into a tumultuous psyche, portraying a world riddled with inner demons, existential crises, and a stark defiance of societal norms. Throughout the album, the duo navigates through themes of fame, self-destruction, and the relentless search for identity amidst chaos. Their raw, unfiltered lyrics serve as a gritty narrative of personal turmoil, substance abuse, and the struggle for authenticity in a world that often feels cold and indifferent. This album is an unapologetic exploration of the darker sides of human experience, resonating with anyone who has ever felt out of place or battled with their own shadows.

Ulcerate – Cutting The Throat Of God LP (Debemur Morti Prod.)

After triumphantly casting off the shackles of claustrophobic dissonance on 2020's lauded Stare Into Death And Be Still, New Zealand unorthodox death metal legends Ulcerate up the ante even further with mind-bending seventh album Cutting The Throat Of God. The album explores a cohesive lyrical theme centered around the rupture of morality, the delicate boundary between depravity and extremity, and the irreversible descent into darkness.

The dB’s – Stands For deciBels [Reissue/1981] CD/LP (Propeller Sounds)

Digitally remastered edition of the band's 1981 debut. Pitchfork cited Stands for deciBels among its list of Top 100 Albums of the 1980s. "The missing link between the proto-power pop of Big Star and the college rock of R.E.M... an unheralded gem". The dB's carved out a nice little niche in the genre of power pop while straddling the line between punk and new wave" - Pop Matters. "[T]he dB's combined a reverence for British pop and arty post-punk leanings that alternate between minimalism and a love of quirky embellishment, odd sounds, and unexpected twists; Stands For deciBels is clearly a collegiate pop experiment, but rarely is experimentation so enjoyable and irresistibly catchy." – AllMusic [Limited edition black & white vinyl.]

Diamanda Galás In Concert is not simply a live album. With nothing but a piano and the full expressive range of her extraordinary voice, Diamanda Galás strips away the comforting patina of time, tradition and stylistic convention to expose and express the raw human emotion that is the living heart of a song. It explores an eclectic range of material; rembetika, soul, ranchera, country and free jazz, and her passionate eviscerations reveal their hidden kinship. Four of the songs-O Prósfigas, La Llorona, Let My People Go, and Ánoixe Pétra are for and by the forsaken, outcast and debased; the other three are hardboiled love songs.

Billie Holiday – Body And Soul [Reissue/1957] LP (Verve)

Small jazz groups brought out the best in Billie Holiday - especially groups as good as the one heard on this classic 1957 recording. Ben Webster, Harry "Sweets" Edison and the other members of this stellar ensemble were not just gifted soloists but sensitive accompanists as well. Lady Day was rarely more ably supported than she was on this program of sturdy standards, including three gems by the Gershwin brothers - and she rarely sounded more luminous.

The Quatro sisters shattered that archetype forever with the Pleasure Seekers, an all-girl teenage rock & roll group who played all the instruments themselves and were fully capable of wiping the stage with any male band that crossed their path.
