Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Gracie Abrams – The Secret Of Us CD/LP (Interscope)
Gracie Abrams returns with her sophomore album, The Secret Of Us. This is Gracie's most expansive body of work both sonically and narratively. Coming off the heels of her hugely successful debut Good Riddance, Gracie shows us how much she has accomplished in one short year. Gracie's growth as a songwriter and vocalist is showcased in her most extroverted album yet, as she continues to work with longtime collaborator Aaron Dessner. A portion of these songs were also written with Gracie's best friend, Audrey Hobert. This album was written with the urgency with which you run home to detail every moment of a night to your friend, with her live experiences over the past year having deeply shaped the identity of this album. [Limited edition yellow vinyl.]
Alcest - Les Chants De’Laurore CD/LP/Cassette (Nuclear Blast)
As the world we live in grows darker and more bewildering with every passing day, the transformative power of music has never been more vital. Formed in the small French town of Bagnols-sur-Cèze at the dawn of the century, underground icons Alcest have always been clear about their desire to transport listeners to somewhere different, somewhere better. Led by founder and multi-instrumentalist Neige, the French artists have been one of the most consistently radical voices in all of heavy music, with a sound that eschews metal's often myopic devotion to casting shadows, in favour of a sublime blend of darkness and blinding bright light. Recorded by Neige and drummer Winterhalter themselves, Alcest's seventh full length release Les Chants de L'Aurore pulls off the neat trick of sounding both huge and intimate. From the opening Komorebi onwards, Alcest sound reborn and revitalised, as their most cherished trademarks are reinvented for a new era, and with new depths and sophistication on display. [Limited edition translucent yellow vinyl.]
Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore - Texicali CD/2xLP (Yep Roc)
TexiCali, the new album from Grammy winner Dave Alvin and Grammy nominee Jimmie Dale Gilmore, continues to bridge the distance between the two troubadours' respective home bases of California (Alvin) and Texas (Gilmore). The geographic theme reflects Alvin's repeated journeys to record in Central Texas with Gilmore and the Austin-based backing band that has toured with the duo for the past few years. As Alvin puts it in the liner notes, those road trips informed the music they made on TexiCali. The 11 songs on this double LP also connect their shared fondness for a broad range of American music forms. Gilmore is primarily known for left-of-center country music, while Alvin's compass points largely toward old-school blues. But there's a lot of ground to cover beyond those foundations, and both artists also are well-known for transcending genre limitations. So it's not surprising that they've spiked TexiCali with cosmic folk narratives, deep R&B grooves and even swinging reggae rhythms.
Arkells – Disco Loadout (Volume 1) LP (Virgin)
Arkells have garnered over 375 million streams to date and released multiple platinum and gold albums in Canada, where they received nine Juno Awards – having won Group of the Year more than any other act. “Dancing On My Own” kicks off their brand-new covers album, Disco Loadout. Covers have always been a part of Arkells show stopping live set, and this high energy project is in response to fan demand. [Limited edition ultra clear/sky blue/violet splatter vinyl.]
Black Decelerant – Reflections Vol. 2: Black Decelerant LP (RVNG Int’l)
Black Decelerant, the duo of Khari Lucas, aka Contour, and Omari Jazz, explores jazz traditions, improvising with synthesizers, guitars, and electronics as a practice laid forth by their musical ancestors. This experience allows for sonic meditations on themes such as Black being/nonbeing, mourning/life, expansion/limitation, and the individual/the collective. The two strive to create a sonic surface which can simultaneously allow Black listeners a place to be still, and to serve as a basis for a movement beyond "the moment.”
Catpack - Catpack CD/LP (Tru Thoughts)
Catpack is the new project consisting of the Los Angeles trio Amber Navran (of Moonchild), Jacob Mann and Phil Beaudreau. The brainchild of three creatives with distinct sounds and a deep admiration for one another, coming together to make something new and exciting, Catpack is the organic output of friendship and collaborative spirit. The project is playful, joyful and cat-themed, with a namesake taken from keyboards that sound like meows and an ingenious merch idea (search Google for catpacks).
Daniel Davies – Ghost Of The Heart CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
In the last decade, Daniel Davies has become a lauded composer of atmospheric, synth-heavy instrumental music-for film and TV scores, alongside John Carpenter on the director's Lost Themes albums, and on solo releases like Signals And Spies. But in his previous musical life, Davies was a rocker, touring all over the world with heavy bands like Year Long Disaster and Karma To Burn. After setting rock music aside to focus on his soundtrack and instrumental work, the multi-instrumentalist has found himself falling back in love with loud guitars over the past couple of years. Ghost Of The Heart, the first full-length alt-rock album Davies has ever released under his own name, captures the excitement of that rediscovered love. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]
George Ducas - Long Way From Home CD/LP (Loud Ranch)
George Ducas earned his stripes with multiple Billboard chart-toppers, including the infectious “Lipstick Promises.” Not content with just personal success, he’s penned hits for legends like George Jones, Garth Brooks, and The Chicks, leaving an indelible mark on country music history. Now he’s back with new album Long Way From Home, produced by Grammy-winning maestro Pete Anderson, and it’s a revelation. Combining the raw grit of Dust Bowl anthems, the high-octane energy of Bakersfield country, and the contemporary flair of LA’s honky-tonk scene, Ducas crafts a sound that’s both timeless and cutting-edge.
Sara Evans – Unbroke LP (Melody Place)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Unbroke is the eleventh studio album by country artist Sara Evans. It is Evans' first album of original material in seven years, following Words (2017), and her first collection of songs since the cover album Copy That (2020).
Daryl Hall – D. CD/LP (United Artist Productions)
Legendary singer, pop culture icon, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and one half of the most successful duo of all time, Daryl Hall, returns for the first time in over a decade with his new solo project, D. The album, including lead single "Can't Say No To You", was produced by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. [Indie store exclusive silver vinyl.]
Indus – Negra LP (ZZK)
Four years after releasing their debut record, Indus are back in 2024 with Negra, their second album. This record explores the essence of the night through dance, seduction and mystery, while paying homage to Colombian amphibious cultures and the land as that place that has seen us moving and that we always return to. With these ten songs Barranquilla producer Óscar Alford, along with Andres Mercado and a select group of collaborators, builds a bridge between the sounds and histories of the Pacific and the Caribbean, bringing together territories like a river running through them and connecting them.
Islands – What Occurs CD/LP (Elf)
What Occurs is Islands' 10th album. It was recorded, mixed and mastered entirely on Vancouver Island, the birthplace of Islands' songwriter Nick Thorburn and his first record made on the island. The album functions like a collection of short stories, each song telling a different tale: A man steals a billionaire's painting, ("David Geffen's Jackson Pollock"), a woman is terrified of intimacy but great at dancing ("Arachnophobia"), and a lovelorn loser does everything wrong ("Drown A Fish"). [Limited edition gold vinyl.]
The Joy – The Joy LP (Transgressive)
The Joy grew up on Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but their harmonies harken back to another vocal tradition. Mbube meaning 'lion', gives some indication of the elemental power its practitioners summon when bursting into song. In this part of South Africa, where the Zulu tradition of a cappella singing is central to the cultural identity of its people, you'll have to transcend the sum of your constituent parts to truly command attention. But singing together as teenage boys for the first time, Pastor (Ntokozo Bright Magcaba), Duzie (Melokuhle Mkhungo), Guduza (Sphelele Hlophe), Sthombe (Phelelani Sithole) and Marcus (Sanele Ngcobo) have no reason to pause and consider that. Alicia Keys and Jennifer Hudson pronounce themselves fans, the latter calling them "my favorite group".
Kehlani – Crash CD/LP (Atlantic)
In Kehlani's words: "A crash, in any form, is the peak height of the moment. It isn't the anxiety of the before, or the lament after. It is the ever so imperative present. A space with no reminisce, no remorse, and no afterthought. CRASH IS HERE. At my most free, most fun, most loud, most fueled, so far." [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl.]
Amythyst Kiah – Pensive Pop CD (Rounder/UMGD)
2023 release. The common themes throughout Pensive Pop address the lamenting external factors that can impede us on our journey in life and the struggle to accept and work through those challenges. Fear is at the center of all these songs: fear of rejection, fear of change, fear of sobriety, fear of living in the present. Pensive Pop is Kiah's reinterpretation of pop/rock songs to bring more attention to the stories being told.
Kool Keith – Feature Magnetic LP (Mello Music)
Tricolor canary cake colorway. In a world full of cheesecake rappers, one man has assembled a phenomenal team to bring you madness. The original originator, ultramanetic, high-wire rap legend Kool Keith brings a star-studded album to the fore. Feature Magnetic highlights MF DOOM, Slug of Atmosphere, Mac Mall, Necro, Craig G, Dirt Nasty, Ras Kass and more.
La Dispute – Here, Here IV LP (Many Hats)
Sky blue and mint green colorway. Here, Hear is an ongoing creative series born in 2007 to deepen understanding of themes and ideas present in proper album releases through added musical and lyrical context for listeners interested in small peeks behind the songwriting curtain. Changing forms, approaches, and mediums periodically throughout its history, the current iteration of the project exists as creative writing prompts introduced and followed by one individual member before being passed along to the others one by one for contribution in a sort of musical game of telephone. The end results are songs written and recorded layer by layer, member by member, all around a central suggestion or restriction, discussed at length on Patreon and via recorded podcast conversations dissecting the experience.
Lake Street Dive – Good Together CD/LP (Fantasy)
Produced by Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow), Lake Street Dive's new album Good Together is an eclectic set of genre-bending songs that could only have come from popular music's most agile and compelling outliers. Fusing pop, R&B, soul and jazz, Lake Street Dive: Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), Mike Calabrese (drums), Akie Bermiss (keyboards), and James Cornelison (guitar), have created the most confident and accomplished recording of their career. [Indie store exclusive translucent light blue vinyl.]
Jim Lauderdale – My Favorite Place CD/LP (Sky Crunch)
Jim Lauderdale is the Grammy Award Winning Singer, Songwriter and Performer known as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “The title of Jim Lauderdale’s new album is just right. On My Favorite Place, his 37th album, the ambassador of Americana has settled into his musical comfort zones: western swing, rockabilly, country weepers, bluegrass rambles, and folk ballads. He’s enjoying himself, too, crooning in his unmistakable voice, following the music where it takes him, and inviting listeners along for the ride.” – Henry Carrigan, No Depression
Jesse Malin – Chasing The Light LP (Wicked Cool)
Jesse Malin, known for his heartfelt lyrics and raw energy, delivers another powerful collection of songs in Chasing The Light. With his distinctive voice and introspective songwriting, Malin takes listeners on a journey through themes of love, loss, and redemption.

The album was produced and mixed by Grammy winning Danish producer Frederik Thaae (K Flay, Jada, Crown The Empire). [Limited edition baby pink vinyl.]
Zacchae'Us Paul – Jazz Money CD/LP (Candid)
Jazz Money, the 2024 debut album from multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Zacchae'Us Paul, is an irreverent, fresh take on "America's classical music" that speaks to the 24-year-old artist's deep-beyond-his-years understanding of Black music and the African diaspora. Paul stretches and bends jazz sounds around the Atlanta hip-hop he grew up with, the gospel sounds and philosophies that have long shaped his music making, and the Caribbean rhythms he learned studying in Puerto Rico. He has created a wholly personal sound that is youthful, and thoughtful all at once.
Pond – Stung! CD/LP (Spinning Top)
Pond is one of the most versatile, inquisitive, and accomplished bands of the psychedelic rock vanguard. Stung! delivers some of Pond’s most glorious rock songs ever and some of their least rock moments, all psychedelic drapery or funk vim. In that epic, as in Stung! at large, Allbrook speaks to our collective modern paradox of being disappointed in or even disconsolate over a world that we know more about than any prior generation but also being in awe of it and (sometimes) each other, too. There are so many reasons to cry and so many reasons to marvel. Can’t they all, Pond suggests with Stung!, be reasons to sing? [Indie store exclusive “bee” splatter color vinyl.]
Sam Reider & The Human Hands – The Golem And Other Tales CD/LP (Human Hands Music)
On The Golem And Other Tales, Sam Reider and The Human Hands expand the boundaries of instrumental roots music. Led by Latin Grammy-nominated composer, accordionist, and pianist Sam Reider, the ensemble includes contemporary instrumental luminaries Alex Hargreaves (Billy Strings), Eddie Barbash (Jon Batiste), Dominick Leslie (Molly Tuttle), Duncan Wickel (Rising Appalachia), Roy Williams (Stephane Wrembel), and Andrew Ryan (Kaia Kater).
Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin – Brasil CD (Candid)
Brasil, the new album by Lee Ritenour and Dave Grusin is a showcase for the unique talents of two of the most successful and influential musicians of their generation. It has been an enduring friendship and collaboration, from playing the famed Baked Potato in Los Angeles in the ‘70s, to collaborations on Dave's records and films and Lee's albums, plus years of touring together on the biggest stages. Guitarist Ritenour and pianist Grusin began their fervent involvement in Brazilian music half a century ago. And, as boldly demonstrated on Brasil, their new studio recording in several decades dedicated to the genre, their passion remains unabated.
Rich Ruth – Water Still Flows CD/LP (Third Man)
Rich Ruth, the recording project of Nashville multi-instrumentalist Michael Ruth, makes wholly immersive instrumental songs that thread the line between gleefully adventurous and calmingly meditative. His music starts in solitude with mesmerizing loops and drones anchoring the arrangements that are eventually colored in by an eclectic cast of collaborators. The resulting exploratory compositions, which combine spiritual jazz, synth-infused post-rock, and cosmic ambient, often beguile but they always soar with a palpable immediacy. His new album Water Still Flows is both his heaviest and his most cathartic. Across seven songs, the LP is both a document of an artist stretching the limits of his process and a testament to how songwriting can be a personally grounding force. [Indie store exclusive ‘true red’ vinyl.]
Shaboozey – Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going CD (American Dogwood)
Determined to carve his own lane in the alt-country/hip-hop space, Shaboozey crafts a sound that pays homage to a cast of traditional Western influences, such as Bob Dylan, Lead Belly, Johnny Cash, and Leonard Cohen, while looking into the future of what the two genres have yet to introduce. Remaining true to his Virginia roots, Shaboozey hopes to continue the region's long-standing tradition of producing some of the most prolific creatives of the new millennium. [Vinyl version due August 16.]
Staples Jr Singers – Searching LP (Luaka Bop)
It happens at times that a stone-cold classic from a bygone era gets rediscovered. But how often does that rediscovery happen when the band is still around? And how often does it lead to a new album? That's the surprising circumstance behind the Staples Jr. Singers' long-awaited second album, Searching. You likely know the Staples Jr. Singers-the family band from Aberdeen, Mississippi-from their first and only record, 1975's When Do We Gate Paid. They made that record themselves when they were only teenagers. Finally, the family is back with their sophomore album, Searching. [CD version due June 28.]
The Story So Far – I Want To Disappear CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Blue vinyl. Les Savy Fav have been underground indie-rock darlings for forever. After a decade and a half, which includes a year-long hiatus, the five-piece released a fifth studio album in 2010, Root For Ruin, which came complete with the Fugazi-inspired post-hardcore quirks of previous LSF offerings.

The Bandwagon made their first recording as a trio with Facing Left in 2000 and has been the foundation of many Moran's artistic statements since. On his 2010 album Ten, Moran celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Bandwagon with an assured album that was a snapshot of a mature band with a decade of shared musical experience from which to draw. In addition to provocative originals the album presented singular interpretations of pieces by Thelonious Monk, Jaki Byard, Leonard Bernstein, and Conlon Nancarrow.
