Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Amon Amarth – The Great Heathen Army CD/LP (Metal Blade)
Armed with their twelfth and arguably finest album to date, Amon Amarth return to full action with a bloody, broadsword-wielding vengeance on The Great Heathen Army. From their underground smash debut Once Sent From The Golden Hall (1998) onwards, Amon Amarth has been an unstoppable creative force. With a unique and unmistakable sound that combines the best of several epic strains of metal, the quintet has become renowned for their ageless anthems and explosive, theatrical live shows. Albums like 2008's widely acclaimed Twilight Of The Thunder God and 2016's conceptual triumph Jomsviking, the Swedes have been consistent standard bearers for heavy metal as a life-affirming and communal experience, armed with a seemingly endless stream of instant classic songs. [Limited-edition blue w/ black splatter vinyl.]
Art Moore – Art Moore CD (ANTI-)
Art Moore make vivid, heartbreaking short stories. Each song on the newly formed three-piece's self-titled debut album is its own individual universe of bittersweet feeling: a brief snapshot of a moment in time that captures the fragility and occasional impossibility of human connection. The ten tracks that comprise the record are deft character studies, zeroing in on restless widows, shy beginners, jilted friends and friendly exes, chronicling minute moments – road trips, casual dates, games of truth or dare – with rich detail and subtle wit. The result is a world of remarkable emotional complexity, an album-length study of loneliness, heartache, and loss that's sweet but never saccharine, sad but never maudlin. Featuring the inimitable songwriting of beloved Oakland luminary Taylor Vick of Boy Scouts set in sharp relief against lush production from Ezra Furman collaborators Sam Durkes and Trevor Brooks, it's a quietly wondrous record – a set of songs that sketch out the struggle and beauty of coping with everyday life. [Vinyl edition due August 26.]
The Brothers Brothers – Cover To Cover CD/LP (Compass)
Harmonizing folk duo The Brother Brothers are used to hearing Everly Brothers comparisons, but even Phil and Don couldn't beat the sound of siblings Adam and David Moss, who share identical DNA. The twins started weaving their voices together before they hit first grade, learning by singing along to the Everlys, the Beatles and other artists they found in their dad's record collection. On their new album, Cover To Cover, The Brother Brothers pay homage to those early influences and other favorite songwriters with unique arrangements of both beloved classics and songs they want more people to hear. [Limited-edition blue color vinyl.]
T-Bone Burnett – The Invisible Light: Spells CD/2xLP (Verve Forecast)
Spells is the new album from Grammy and Oscar-winner Joseph Henry "T Bone" Burnett and the second in The Invisible Light trilogy - a fusion of trance, electronic, folk, tribal, and global music. At the heart of this trilogy is technology and its advances throughout the last century - with radio, film, television, and the internet serving as central parts of our lives. In acoustic space, people hear from every direction at once, the center is everywhere and there is no border.
Dust Star – Open Up The Heart LP (Run For Cover)

Fans of Wisch's previous band Cende and Jergens' cult-classic group SIRS will find that these thirteen new songs raise the bar for concise and pristine pop songwriting with a gritty edge. The album features stunning art from Sheer Mag's Kyle Seely.
Craig Finn – A Legacy Of Rentals LP (Positive Jams)
Best known as the singer of the Hold Steady, Craig Finn is a Minnesota-bred singer, songwriter, and guitarist based out of New York City. Combining literary influences like Jack Kerouac and John Berryman with the musical influences of Bruce Springsteen and fellow Minnesotan Paul Westerberg, Finn's highly descriptive lyrical style has a strong focus on narrative, crafting whole worlds for the people in his songs to exist within.

From twisted sea shanties to instrumental synth experiments and driving drum machines, this brand-new material puts the fundamentally unique artist's entire palette on display. The LP package includes a 60+ page book of illustrated lyrics to accompany many of the songs on the album, as well as photos, writings, and original pieces of Jowe's artwork.

The Interrupters – In The Wild CD/LP+MP3 (Hellcat/Epitaph)
After three studio albums and over a decade deep into the music game, The Interrupters deliver their new album, In The Wild. This 14-track opus is the real deal; it's a story of survival, a story of resilience, by a band being bold and rejecting the easy impulses of simply repeating what's worked before. Together during lockdown, Aimee Interrupter, partner and guitarist Kevin Bivona, and his younger twin brothers, Jesse (drums) and Justin (bass), decided to put idle hands to work. After building a home studio in their garage together, Kevin stepped up and took charge of production duties to become "the accountable one" this time around. The record took shape in an unforced and organic fashion, and the recording process was evidently a fun one, which is reflected in the sound of the album, gliding across a spectrum of breathless punk rock, doo-wop, gospel, dancehall, and the band's customary nods to the lineage of two-tone. [Indie store exclusive opaque aqua blue vinyl.]
Kokoroko – Could We Be More CD/LP (Brownswood)
Could We Be More is an expansive and ambitious debut album that speaks to the force of Kokoroko. Each song possesses the power to evoke memories and harness the feeling of home through music: from the psychedelic, funk-laden previous single “Something's Going On” to the congregational energy of “We Give Thanks”. Could We Be More fuses together the African- London synergy which so naturally underpins the heat of Kokoroko's identity. [Indie store exclusive light blue vinyl.]
Lauv – All 4 Nothing CD/LP (Virgin)
Multi-platinum chart-topping singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Lauv has asserted himself first and foremost as a storyteller. Following 2015 viral sensation, "The Other", Lauv's next chapter finds him continuing to transform magic around him into generational anthems. Sonically the most challenging and exciting yet, Lauv's highly-anticipated second full-length album All 4 Nothing is introduced by lead single "All 4 Nothing (I'm So In Love)" which he describes as being "a song about loving someone so much at a time in your life when you're still in the process of learning how to love yourself and being scared how your own personal insecurities could ruin a love that is and could be so genuine and transformative. In essence, it's a song about surrendering to love and life." [Indie store exclusive vinyl pressing featuring alternate artwork.]
Lights – PƎP LP (Fueled By Ramen)
Two colorways: yellow and indie store exclusive red. Alt-pop icon Lights’ new album PƎP has received praise from NPR, who lauded the collection’s “insanely catchy hooks” and tipped the artist as “ready for world domination.”
Marci – Marci LP (Arbutus)
A great pop record is like a great friend: an intimate confidante, a shoulder to cry on, and a partner in crime when you're ready to get dolled up and dance the pain away under the disco ball (or in front of your bedroom mirror.) That's what you'll find on Marci, the solo debut from Marta Cikojevic of Montreal soft-rock group TOPS, who steps out on her own in self-assured style with a guileless collection of synth pop songs that brim with unabashed sincerity.
Mbulelo – Kalibre LP (Nyege Nyege Tapes)
Twenty-six-year-old South African producer Mbulelo Mehlomakhulu grew up with a passion for house music. He began releasing music early at only 18, working with Blaque Core's Profound Nation and issuing a slew of records under the Xerophytic Soul moniker. Achieving local and global success with tracks like 'Ancient Cultures', he began to pioneer a more experimental sound - a cross between Durban's dark, propulsive gqom sound and vintage Detroit techno. Mbulelo's sound is smart and poignant, and completely his own. By linking contemporary South African dance music to Detroit's pioneering 1980s techno vision, he makes a connection that's never felt more current.
Sophia Mills – Baby Magic LP (Sofia Mills)
Translucent red color vinyl pressing. The debut album from 19-year-old artist Sofia Mills intimately details the most pivotal moments in her coming-of-age experience: breakups with toxic boyfriends, coming out as queer at age 16, a longtime struggle with mental illness. As shown on her breakthrough single "Coffee Breath", the Massachusetts-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist imbues her storytelling with both startling clarity and profound sensitivity, an element echoed in her warmly textured brand of indie-pop. Written entirely by Mills and co-produced with John Mark Nelson (Taylor Swift, Allison Ponthier), Baby Magic arrives as a complex and captivating body of work, built on a potent tension between her dreamy romanticism and intense self-awareness.
Murder By Death – Spell/Bound LP (Tent Show)
On their ninth album, Spell/Bound, Murder By Death has taken their largest leap forward into lavish, spaced-out territory only hinted at on previous records. "Sonically, the direction we explored was more in the vein of almost trip-hop, like Massive Attack and Portishead, where we were trying to lean into a vibe that was chill but dark. We wanted it to be a record that was lush but not necessarily a wall of sound," says frontman Adam Turla. [Limited-edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]
Portico Quartet – Portico Quartet CD/2xLP+MP3 (Real World)
Double vinyl LP pressing with fourth side etching. Includes digital download with bonus tracks. Portico Quartet's self-titled third album draws on the inspiration of electronica, ambient, classical, and dance music as the band takes their beautiful, cinematic, and futuristic sound to exciting vistas - where the inspiration of Burial, Mount Kimbie, and Flying Lotus rub shoulders with the textures of Arve Henriksen and Bon Iver (with echoes of Steve Reich and Max Richter). [Limited-edition violet & green vinyl.]
Primus – Conspiranoid CDEP/12” (ATO)
The first, completely original Primus music in over a decade comes in the form of a three-song EP. Conspiranoid kicks off with the 12-minute epic, "Conspiranoia", exploring the absurdity and darkness bubbling up in the contemporary world, perpetuated, as frontman Les Claypool says, "by anyone with a slight hint of web design aptitude." He goes on, "Because all three songs were bred in an odd time of divide, confusion, angst, frustration, and social senility, the title 'Conspiranoid' seemed appropriate." [Limited-edition white vinyl.]
Psycroptic – Divine Council CD/LP (Prosthetic)
“One of Australia’s greatest and most successful metal exports, Hobart’s Psycroptic have been captivating extreme music enthusiasts across the globe for over two decades. The Tassie tech-death titans’ eighth studio effort, Divine Council, sees the act at a bit of a crossroads. Whilst highly regarded worldwide, one criticism that could be thrown at Psycroptic recently is that they have fallen into a bit of a set routine with their music. There’s always impressive playing on display, but they can be found lacking in the song-composition department at times. Seemingly set on actively changing that, Divine Council sees the group creating their most accessible and immediate release to date – but still unquestionably Psycroptic.” – Andrew Kapper, Wall Of Sound [A limited-edition clear w/ blue, green & white color vinyl pressing is available for special order.]
Role Model – Rx LP (Interscope)
Released last April on CD – now available on vinyl, including in indie store exclusive white color pressing. Rx is the debut album from Role Model, aka Tucker Pillsbury. In this dynamic debut, he continues to explore his pop sensibilities while playing with themes of love, healing, and religion - and ultimately, the power of a woman. As Role Model, he assembles, disassembles, and reassembles different vibes, sounds, and emotions into his work. One moment, he's crooning about his crush's earrings over crunchy chords. The next, he's spitting bars about staying home. Either way, the intimacy of his songwriting beckons connection.
Dylan Scott – Livin’ My Best Life CD/LP (Atlantic)
Livin' My Best Life is the full-length follow-up to Dylan Scott's Nothing To Do Town EP. His deep, resonating drawl delivers a personal set filled with the dusty backroads, barstools and church pews that defined his youth growing up in Louisiana.

Live archive release. Captured live in the summer of 2011, Carry Me Home showcases two of the past century's most iconic voices coming together in love and joy, tracing their shared roots and celebrating the enduring power of faith and music. The result is an album that's at once a time capsule and a memorial, a blissful homecoming and a fond farewell, a once-in-a-lifetime concert-and friendship-preserved for the ages.
Ural Thomas & The Pain – Dancing Dimensions CD/LP+MP3 (Bella Union)
Ural Thomas is universally recognized as one of the most exciting singers remaining from the original soul era, and an active musical institution for over sixty years. His catalog has slotted into countless sweet, seductive mixtapes between James Brown, Otis Redding, and Stevie Wonder.

Various Artists – Something Borrowed, Something New: A Tribute to John Anderson CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)
John Anderson is truly a country legend, as his remarkable career has spanned over a staggering 40+ years, starting in 1977 to his last release, Years, produced by Dan Auerbach in 2020. In that period, Anderson has charted more than 40+ singles on the Billboard Country Music Charts, including an impressive five number ones in numerous decades. In 2014 Anderson was elected to the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame. His wake of influence throughout his recording career has become that of legend. It was during the recording of Years for Easy Eye Sound that noted artists, running the gamut from peers to the influenced, started coming out of the woodwork to heap praise on his body of work. The herculean talents of everyone from Luke Combs to John Prine, from Eric Church to Tyler Childers, Nathaniel Rateliff to Brothers Osborne, and Ashley McBryde to Gillian Welch & David Rawlings and many more all came together to pay tribute to John and his remarkable contributions in this stunning album. Vocalist/pianist Andy Bey imbues every number here with a spiritual depth and soulful intensity, yet Experience And Judgment is a relaxing, uplifting listen reminiscent of Bill Withers or Roy Ayers. Some credit for this album's unique vibe must also be given to producer William S. It's an artful blend-leavened with a little classic R&B-that clicked commercially.

Back in 1957, when Jerry Lee Lewis exploded on radio and jukeboxes with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On" and "Great BallsOf Fire", rock 'n' roll was brand new, young and wild, loud and dangerous. The same could be said of Jerry Lee. Jerry Lee was in Louisiana when he heard Elvis and Carl Perkins and knew he had to get to Memphis and Sam Phillips, a man he thought would understand his music. He was right. When Sam heard that wild, free spirit with a no holds barred piano pounding style, he put a microphone in front of him and turned on the recording machine. This collection contains all the songs that Jerry Lee Lewis recorded for Sun Records, including those that were never released when he was on Sun.
