Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke are Penny & Sparrow. Texas natives, Baxter and Jahnke first crossed paths at UT Austin, where they developed both a fast friendship and a deeply symbiotic musical connection. Jahnke was a gifted guitarist with an ear for melody, Baxter an erudite lyricist with a mesmerizing voice and crystalline falsetto, and the duo quickly found that their vocals blended together as if they’d been singing in harmony their whole lives.

Beginning with 2013’s Tenboom, the staunchly DIY pair released a series of critically lauded records that garnered comparisons to the hushed intimacy of Iron & Wine and the adventurous beauty of James Blake, building up a devoted fanbase along the way through relentless touring and word-of-mouth buzz. NPR praised the band’s songwriting as a “delicate dance between heartache and resolve,” while The World Café raved that they’ve “steadily built a sound as attentive to detail as Simon & Garfunkel and as open to the present day as Bon Iver,” and Rolling Stone hailed their catalog as “folk music for Sunday mornings, quiet evenings, and all the fragile moments in between.” In addition to the mountain of glowing reviews, the band also earned high profile fans—including The Civil Wars’ John Paul White, who produced 2015’s Let A Lover Drown You—and extensive tour dates with everyone from Josh Ritter and Johnnyswim to Drew Holcomb and Delta Rae. Their last ablum, 2019’s Finch, brought Penny & Sparrow to Grimey’s for a delightful in-store performance and we’re so stoked to be able to host them again around the release of Lefty!

Lefty is a cross-genre double-album. Of the record the band says, "We wanted to record a double album for the challenge of it, and also for the chance to be sonically rangy and eccentric. The idea of offering all sorts of sounds, structures, melodies, and lyrical approaches in 20 songs was creatively exciting to us, so we did it. Lefty is a long collection of both real and made up things. We wrote poetry, true stories, literary fan fiction, horror, erotica, slice-of-life vignettes, dream scenarios, saloon conversations, elegies, a toast, a few confessions and at least two love letters. All of them belong together because each one is an extension of us, of the things we love. We are the ties that bind Lefty. "

Lefty is available to order here now as a Black Vinyl 2 LP set and CD. Each copy ordered for local pickup includes a wristband for the band’s album signing. (One LP = one wristband, 2 CD = 2 wristbands, etc.) Wristbands are required to participate in the signing for all 13+ (kids 12 & under do not require wristbands if attending with a wristband-holding adult.) We hope all who place an order for local pickup will be able to join us on Friday, January 31st for our special instore performance & Lefty album signing with the band. All who preorder the album on vinyl or CD for mail order will receive a signed copy.
