S.G. Goodman - Teeth Marks
S.G. Goodman - Teeth Marks
Mining garage rock, Appalachian folk and post-punk influence, S.G. Goodman’s sophomore album Teeth Marks finds her stirring vocals and emotionally astute songwriting draped in a sonic patchwork of southern indie rock. Fresh off a whirlwind SXSW, where Rolling Stone praised her “guitar muscle and tales of Kentucky,” Goodman will continue touring across the US, opening for Jason Isbell and more, plus headline dates including, June 7 at New York’s Mercury Lounge.
Raised in Western Kentucky on the Mississippi River Delta, in a strict church going family, Goodman went from singing in church three times a week to a prominent, politically active member of the Murray, KY indie rock scene. Her critically acclaimed Jim James produced debut, Old Time Feeling drew the attention of everyone from The Fader, Rolling Stone, NPR, and PBS Newshour.
Drawing on influences from Velvet Underground, Pavement, to Karen Dalton, Teeth Marks explores how trauma will log-jam in the body. Across 11 tracks, Goodman’s personal vignettes all focus on love’s lasting mark - from lovingly confronting a self-destructive alcoholic friend, or confronting herself in the face of unrequited love and most personally exploring her embodied trauma from coming out as queer in her rural Kentucky community, and the homophobic prejudice and ostracization that followed. All of this underpins a landmark release that will further establish her as one of the most impassioned and idiosyncratic voices of her generation.
Released June 3rd, 2022 via Verve Forecast Records.
