“Grand Canyon,” the first single from Mat Kearney’s new album January Flower, could be seen as a metaphor for quarantine and being so far away from loved ones. “I think we all can relate to the feeling of being disconnected from people in this season,” he says. “Covid & a newborn little girl have left me at home for the longest stretch of my career thus far. To be honest, I have enjoyed sitting still for a season.” Kearney’s sixth studio album, sees him revisiting the signer-songwriter sounds most often associated with his earlier records. This return to form was inspired by his time on the road in 2019 and a fateful trip to Joshua Tree which prompted a stripped down approach to his song-craft.
