We hope you can make plans to join us for a special in-store performance by some of Nashville’s finest, Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection with Erin Rae and Sean Thompson. The trio will perform in the record store on Thursday, August 3rd at 4:00 PM to celebrate the recently released Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection 2 album and as a farewell performance before they hit the road and head overseas for a UK tour. Upon the release of his first album, Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection, we hosted a pandemic-era virtual in-store performance. (You can watch it on YouTube here.) The band was so great, just playing to an empty record store; now we’re thankful we’re able to host Cullum and co. again, but with an audience this time! This is a free and all ages affair, so come one, come all!
Cullum grew up in East London, a town that provided him with early exposure to classic pub rock, by way of his father, such as Dr. Feelgood and Thin Lizzy, and farther-flung music, by way of his mother, such as Talking Heads and Lou Reed. However, it was learning pedal steel from legendary English player B. J. Cole that set him on the path he still walks today. After touring with Nashville-based groups and hearing tales of “seasoned Nashville steel players”, the young musician upped sticks and found a “nice little crowd of weirdos” in his chosen city.
Before the release of …Coin Collection, Cullum had always maintained a somewhat silent presence - even now saying “I still want to hide behind my pedal steel in fear”. Despite Steelism, his project with Jeremy Fetzer, showing off more of his talents, never before had Cullum felt the limelight so firmly on himself. Like his pedal steel undertow of many huge artists’ music - Kesha, Lambchop, and more recently Angel Olsen - the genius in …Coin Collection 2 is in its subtlety—in what it murmurs rather than shouts. Come catch those murmurs with us in the record store on August 3rd. Copies of … Coin Collection 2 is available on limited edition vinyl and CD in the record store and on our website here.
