Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

16 – Into Dust CD/LP (Relapse)

16 returns with their heaviest and most devastating record to date, Into Dust. The album, a collection of cautionary tales of survival and redemption, is set to an amalgamation of sludge, punk, metal, hardcore, and stoner riffs, that could only be built through 30 years of commitment to their dark sonic craft, which 16 continues to improve upon.

Tim Bernardes – Mil Coisas Invisíveis LP (Psychic Hotline)

Songs of love, sofrência, and change from one of the shining hearts of São Paulo: Tim Bernardes His work connects the cosmic dots from Tropicalia and samba to contemporary indie and folk; his new album, the enveloping and expansive Mil Coisas Invisíveis is a generous and intimate moment, meditations of metaphysical transformation in the face of grave uncertainty.

Betty Who – Big CD (BMG)

If you need to know anything about Australian-American pop trailblazer Betty Who, it's that she is a survivor and an LGBTQ+ icon due to her infectious, always-inclusive artistry.

Candlemass – Sweet Evil Sun CD/LP (Napalm)

Clocking in almost four decades, it's no stretch to say that Grammy-nominated Swedish epic doom legends Candlemass is still one of the heaviest metal bands on earth. Through their evil riffs, crushing rhythmic attack and dramatic vocals, they changed the landscape of metal worldwide. Reunited with outstanding original vocalist Johan Langquist, the band around founding member Leif Edling finds its way back to its roots and finally delivers the long awaited, earth-shaking new full-length album, Sweet Evil Sun.

Chris Canterbury – Quaalude Lullabies LP (BFD)

Born and raised in the piney woods outside of Haynesville, Louisiana, Chris Canterbury comes from the grimy remnants of a small oil patch town, a way of life that is slowly fading but still lingers in the songs he sings. Born to a working-class blue-collar family, Chris struggled to find the middle ground between his grandfather's Southern Baptist sermons and the honky-tonk mystics that he discovered on old vinyl records in high school. Armed with an old thrift-shop guitar, Chris began playing and writing stories about life from a unique but oddly familiar point of view. Songs about liquor stores, truck stops, low-rent motels, and the grifters and transients that frequent them. It doesn't matter if it's a pool hall or a theater, a festival or a front porch, Chris's live sound is the whiskey-laden prospectus that anyone with a struggle can relate to.

Melissa Carper – Ramblin’ Soul CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)

“It’s tempting to label Melissa Carper as some sort of retro revivalist. She is, after all, an artist that retains a deep reverence for country’s past precepts. That was evident with her debut LP, 2021’s Daddy's Country Gold, an album that not only garnered her added attention, but a new nickname as well — “Hillbillie Holiday”, With her new effort, the comparisons to such fabled forebears as the late Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton and June Carter Cash remain all but inevitable. Ultimately, Carper’s credence is assured. Ramblin’ Soul is an assured statement that shows reverence to past precepts while also propelling her forward towards the future. It’s retro and relevant all at the same time, giving Carper solid standing as an essential artist. Her future rambles will likely be equally anticipated.” – Lee Zimmerman, Holler.

Crack Cloud – Tough Baby LP (Tin Angel)

Crack Cloud's 2022 album Tough Baby is both a clarion call and a life-manual for the listener. Unsurprisingly, Tough Baby is a record with purpose and resolve. Nothing is wasted. Sometimes the music feels deliberately compressed, the essences extracted and bottled into an overpowering cordial, as on “115 At Night”, which sounds like an '80s Van Halen track being squeezed into another shape. And it's difficult to see how a track like “Virtuous Industry” can hold itself together, such are the sonic hoops it jumps through. The sharp angles and hook-laden guitar lines that were once seen as a trademark sound are less in evidence. The last track “Crackin’ Up” does nod back to earlier releases with a booming beat and guitars that snag, like wool on barbed wire.

Disturbed – Divisive CD/LP (Reprise)

Multi-platinum alternative metal band Disturbed with their Drew Fulk (Motionless In White, Papa Roach) produced eight studio effort Divisive. Singer David Draiman explains that pounding single, "Unstoppable" is "definitely one of the heavier tracks on the record. The groove builds into a bombastic animal. It's truly the fight song." "We always have a big rock anthem on every album," Dan Donegan chimes in, "We love to write empowering songs for motivation. We're avid sports fans, and that's definitely part of it. It's an in-your-face track, for sure." [Indie store exclusive silver vinyl.]

Goat – Oh Death LP (Rocket Recordings)

Samara Joy – Linger Awhile CD/LP (Verve)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Once-in-a-generation vocalist Samara Joy has signed with Verve Records for the release of her label debut Linger Awhile. At just 22 years old, Samara has already garnered critical acclaim for a voice "as rich as custard" (The New York Times) and a delivery that is "disarming [and] unhurried" (NPR Fresh Air). The Bronx native took home the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition prize while still in college and made her "glowing, auspicious debut" (NPR) at the 2022 Newport Jazz Festival, earning multiple standing ovations in the process. Linger Awhile finds Samara updating beloved songs with a modern twist, sometimes singing original lyrics using the melodies of famous instrumental solos, a style known as vocalese.

Dermot Kennedy – Sonder CD/LP (Interscope)

The announcement of Irish singer/songwriter Dermot Kennedy's sophomore album Sonder has been anticipated by fans and critics alike since the global success of his million-selling #1 debut album Without Fear. Each song here is a portal, an invitation to lose yourself in the moment and disappear into a world of imagination and memory. Lanois recorded the entire collection himself, capturing a series of gentle, exotic piano performances at his studio in Toronto with the help of co-producer Dangerous Wayne Lorenz, and the results are both intimate and expansive all at once. Melodies unfold slowly with patience and grace; ethereal arrangements drift around them like fog rolling through the mountains. More than just an album, Player, Piano is a gateway into a cinematic sonic universe full of mystery and wonder, a place where the lines between reality and fantasy blur and deep truths and desires reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways.

Ari Lennox – age/sex/location CD/LP (Interscope)

After years of anticipation, Ari Lennox looks to sweep the world of R&B/Soul off its feet again with her sophomore outing, age/sex/location, which explores Ari's viewpoint on dating/relationships. The 12-song effort features Summer Walker, Lucky Daye, Chlöe Bailey and is the follow-up to Ari's acclaimed 2019 debut, Shea Butter Baby. [A limited-edition ’sea blue’ vinyl.]

Molly Lewis – Mirage CDEP/12”+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)

Molly Lewis's compositions seem to float from distant shores. They're otherworldly, drawn more from landscapes of dream than from anywhere you could find on a map. Lewis is a unique presence in music today. Her trademark whistle, which brings to mind the great Peruvian soprano Yma Sumac, has graced recordings of everything from Schumann lieder and Brazilian jazz to Spaghetti Western ballads and noir lounge. [Limited-edition translucent pink vinyl.]

Charles Lloyd – Trios: Sacred Thread CD (Blue Note)

Saxophonist and composer Charles Lloyd has been a free spirit, master musician, and visionary. At 84, he remains at the height of his powers and as prolific as ever. As a sound seeker, Lloyd has perhaps found no greater manifestation than on his Trio Of Trios project, which encompasses three albums in different trio settings. The third, Trios: Sacred Thread, features guitarist Julian Lage and percussionist Zakir Hussain. [Vinyl due 12/09]

Scotty McCreery – Same Truck CD/2xLP (Triple Tigers)

Deluxe CD and vinyl editions featuring six bonus tracks. Same Truck is the fifth studio album by country music artist. [A limited gold color vinyl pressing is available.]

Mothica – Nocturnal LP (Rise)

Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. Catchy trauma fueled alt-pop. Growing up in Oklahoma, Mothica found openly talking about mental health struggles to be taboo and looked to the internet for a sense of community. Though Mothica has been writing music since she was a kid, she did not begin pursuing music until she was 18 producing and releasing her songs independently online. Embarking on a journey of self-expression and exploration through music, Mothica has since released a handful of EPs, countless singles, and her 2020 debut record Blue Hour.

Nickelback – Get Rollin’ CD (BMG)

Get Rollin', the Diamond-certified, multi-platinum selling Canadian rockers' tenth studio album and first in five years, comes introduced by the thumping saga "San Quentin" which was inspired after frontman Chad Kroeger met a real-life warden from the notoriously high-security California prison. "We've spent the last few years making a record at a pace that gave us the freedom to create and we can't wait for everyone to hear the new music," says the band. "We've missed the fans and look forward to bringing the new songs to life on stage, so let's Get Rollin'!" [Deluxe CD version features four bonus acoustic versions of songs on the album. Vinyl edition due March 31.]

Panda Bear & Sonic Boom – Reset CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)

Although Panda Bear and Sonic Boom are no strangers to each other's music, Reset marks their first collaborative release. When SB pitched an idea to take their working relationship to the next level, he reckoned PB might reject the proposition outright – in the nine gloriously, feverishly hook-bound tracks of Reset, though, you can hear exactly how much he loved the prospect. [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl with slipmat.]

Phife Dawg – Forever LP (Trini Gladiator LLC)

The Estate for the legendary MC and A Tribe Called Quest founding member Phife Dawg is excited to unveil the vinyl for his posthumous album Forever. The title track of the album "Forever" was the last single recorded by Phife on March 19, 2016, days before he transitioned.

Pole – Tempus CD/2xLP+MP3 (Mute)

Pole is Düsseldorf-native musician, producer, and mastering engineer Stefan Betke, and is known for his unique musical language oscillating between melody and avant-garde in electronic music, with audible influences from dub and jazz music. While the subject of his critically acclaimed 2020 Fading focused on coping with dementia and the loss of memory over time, Tempus focuses on the connection between the past, the present and the future. Translating to tense in English, Tempus investigates whether music that was created in the past, can still be audible and influential for the present, and how much can this music shine into the future. [Limited-edition pink vinyl.]

The Prescriptions – Time Apart LP (Single Lock)

A timeless rock & roll band for the modern world, The Prescriptions sharpen their sound with Time Apart. Produced by Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) and Brendan Benson (The Raconteurs), the album funnels a half-century of American and British influences - including taut power pop, explorative indie rock, jangling heartland hooks, and new wave nuances - into something sharp and singular.

Adrian Quesada – Jaguar Sound LP (ATO)

Limited baby blue color vinyl pressing. Jaguar Sound is the second solo album of 2022 from Adrian Quesada. With it, the Black Pumas co-founder showcases another impressive side of his artistry with 12 head-nodding, cinematic instrumentals landing somewhere between Khruangbin, Lee Hazlewood and The Alchemist. Recorded at Quesada's own Electric Deluxe Studio in 2020, Jaguar Sound proves that he is one of the most exciting stylists in modern independent music.

Röyksopp – Profound Mysteries III CD/2xLP (Dig Triumph)
Röyksopp – Profound Mysteries I 2xLP (Dig Triumph)
Röyksopp – Profound Mysteries II 2xLP (Dig Triumph)

Electronic pop trailblazers, Röyksopp, deliver the third part to their expansive Profound Mysteries project, Profound Mysteries III (also released on triple-CD gathering all three volumes, and stand-alone vinyl editions of each). Berge and Brundtland describe Profound Mysteries as the biggest undertaking of Röyksopp's career. It both encapsulates the unique sound they've spent decades honing and expands on it. It's a bold look to the future, and an homage to the artists, genres, and musical movements that first inspired them. It's a project they've spent their whole lives making (the oldest ideas date back to the early days of Röyksopp, literally using MIDI data first composed by the band when they were teenagers in the 1990s), and it is brand new.

The Sadies – Colder Streams LP+MP3 (Yep Roc)

Since their formation in 1994, Toronto's Sadies have developed, even perfected, a style of music that is uniquely their own. Possessing a deep fondness and reverence for the best of country, bluegrass, and blues (CBGB!), they are equally informed and influenced by everything from ‘60s garage and psychedelic rock (Pebbles, Nuggets, et al) to surf instrumentals and punk rock.

Jonathan Scherk - Toon! LP (Faitiche)

As Jonathan Scherk's split album with Daniel Majer, It's Counterpart, made abundantly clear, Jonathan Scherk is a master of his craft. Toon! immerses you in a highly distinctive world of plunderphonics-sampledelica-variations acousmatiques that's impossible to classify while feeling familiar nonetheless. Following a strict two-minute format, thirteen complex sound constructions offer a range of experiences -- as if the neurosciences had developed an acoustic formula capable of triggering illusions of memory. 13 tracks = 13 déjà-vus. When department stores dream ... epiphanies appear in elliptical rotations. Afterthoughts recalled on the beach as a child, soft-drawn and befuddling. Are they dreams? Are they metempsychotic leakage? With a cup so full to the brim, there's bound to be spillage.

Soen – Atlantis CD+DVD/2xLP+MP3 (Silver Lining Music)

Swedish metal supergroup Soen release a very special concert recording, Atlantis, featuring 13 of the groups most popular compositions reinterpreted with live orchestral accompaniment.

Sohn – Trust CD/LP+MP3 (4AD)

Four years after his last original music, English singer, songwriter, and producer Sohn returns with his new record Trust. The album finds him further exploring a sound that first found success in the electronic and noir-pop spaces, and now explores deeper roots in folk structures and an aching, emotive balladry. Whilst still drawing on the influences that garnered such a rabid international audience, the album is an unequivocal statement of Sohn as an ambitious auteur beyond simple genre tags. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]

Special Interest – Endure CD/LP (Rough Trade)

Brought together by New Orleans' DIY scene, Special Interest is, on every level, uncompromising: in their adventurous sound, their high-energy live performances, and their convictions. Dance music and punk culture have flirted in the warehouse before, but the desire of Special Interest is to dismantle genre. 2018's Spiraling and 2020's widely acclaimed The Passion Of articulated the group's style, driven by dance grooves and electronic textures as much as hardcore riffs, but Special Interest expands the vision with Endure, their latest album. Biting humor and irreverence intermingle with harsh edges of noise, and there's always room to dance and sweat.

St. Lucia – Utopia LP (Nettwerk)

Led by husband-and-wife duo South Africa-born Jean-Philip Grobler and Germany-born Patti Beranek, St. Lucia retreat from a fractured world on fire and into the glow of a rapturous synth-spiked electro-pop catharsis-akin to a dance party at the edge of existence. On the aptly titled Utopia album, the group beams out a light of their own and shines brighter than ever.

Lindsey Stirling – Snow Waltz LP (Concord)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Award-winning pop-violinist Lindsey Stirling releases her new Christmas album Snow Waltz. Featuring eight classic covers and five original tracks, Snow Waltz delivers Stirling’s immersive arrangements and mesmerizing melodies but with a seasonal twist, featuring songs that promise to be the perfect soundtrack for the holiday season. “I wanted to give the songs a whimsical, pixie-like feeling that’s quintessentially me,” says Stirling about the new record. “It’s always a challenge to put your own stamp on a classic song that’s been recorded hundreds of times, and I really loved experimenting with different approaches and making sure that every song felt completely unique to who I am as an artist.” [A limited-edition blue color vinyl pressing is available.]

Carl Stone – Wat Dong Moon Lek LP (Unseen Worlds)

Carl Stone continues his late career prolific renaissance with a new album of sculpted, tuneful MAX/MSP fantasias. Stone "plays" his source material the way Terry Riley's In C "plays" an ensemble - with a loose, freewheeling charm connected to the ancient human impulse to make sound, melody, and rhythm from anything. Stone's unique technique simultaneously focuses and sprays sound like a symphony of uncapped fire hydrants. Is this techno, avant-garde, sound art? It's simply (or rather fantastically messily) Carl Stone.

Billy Strings – Me/and/Dad CD/LP (Concord)

"As long as I can remember, I wanted to make a record with my dad," Billy Strings says. The dream to make a proper studio album is finally realized. Me/and/Dad is a collection of 14 classics that Billy and his dad, Terry Barber, know like the back of their hands. It's the music that made Billy the musician and human he is today. The album represents a lifelong goal finally achieved and a way for the Grammy-winning musician to honor the man who taught him how to play guitar. The record was produced by Billy and Gary Paczosa and features playing from bluegrass stalwarts Ronnie and Rob McCoury, Michael Cleveland, and Mike Bub, along with special guest Jerry Douglas. [Several indie store exclusive vinyl colors are available as well as standard black. Available in the shop and in the Grimey's webstore.]

Thus Love – Memorial LP (Captured Tracks)

Thus Love is a band-but also so much more. The Brattleboro, Vermont trio stand together, a bond cemented by their experience as outsiders looking in. For Thus Love, DIY is an ethos that reflects not only their musical vision but their very existence as three self-identifying trans artists. From the band's inception, Echo Mars (she/her), Lu Racine (he/him) and Nathaniel van Osdol (they/them) have lived together under the same roof, designed, and produced their own merch, and even created their own recording studio from scratch. "I realize that most artists don't live this way," says Mars. "But for us, it was never really a choice. The art we make is so tied to who we are and the community we're a part of, that this is the only way we can possibly do it."

Weyes Blood – And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow CD/LP+MP3/Cassette (Sub Pop)

Technological agitation. Narcissism fatigue. A galaxy of isolation. These are the new norms keeping Weyes Blood (aka Natalie Mering) up at night and the themes at the heart of her latest release, And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow. The celestial-influenced folk album is her follow-up to the acclaimed Titanic Rising. (Pitchfork, NPR, and The Guardian admiringly named it one of 2019's best.) While Titanic Rising was an observation of doom to come, And In The Darkness, Hearts Aglow is about being in the thick of it: a search for an escape hatch to liberate us from algorithms and ideological chaos. "We're in a fully functional shit show," Mering says. "My heart is a glow stick that's been cracked, lighting up my chest in an explosion of earnestness." [Limited’ Loser’ edition on purple vinyl.]

Neil Young with Crazy Horse – World Record 2xCD/2xLP/Cassette (Reprise)

It was mixed to analog tape at Rubin's Shangri-La studios using a selection of vintage instruments and equipment. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

The Winston Brothers – Drift CD/LP (Colemine)

Hot on the heels of their debut 45 released on Colemine Records, German funk powerhouse The Winston Brothers re-up with their first-ever full-length LP. Drift is the name of the game, presenting eleven versatile cuts to invite listeners on an all-instrumental trip back to the future of funk. But make no mistake: Though audibly steeped in the deep funk tradition, this retrophile outfit is anything but dusty. [Limited-edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]

The Wombats – Is This What It Feels Like To Feel Like This? 12” (PKA Wombat)
